De Amerikaanse dichteres en schrijfster (Helen) Diane Glancy werd geboren op 18 maart 1941 in Kansas City, Missouri. Al op jonge leeftijd had ze moeite met het bepalen van haar identiteit, omdat haar levensstijl niet aansloot bij wat ze op school leerde. Glancy besloot een Cherokee-identiteit te omarmen en vond het gemakkelijk om die in haar poëzie tot uitdrukking te brengen. Ze behaalde haar Bachelor of Arts (Engelse literatuur) aan de Universiteit van Missouri in 1964 en vervolgde haar opleiding aan de Universiteit van Centraal Oklahoma, waar ze in 1983 een masterdiploma Engels behaalde. In 1988 behaalde ze haar Master of Fine Arts aan de Universiteit van Iowa. Glancy is hoogleraar Engels en begon in 1989 met lesgeven aan Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, waar ze cursussen Native American literatuur en creatief schrijven gaf. De literaire werken van Glancy zijn erkend en belicht aan de Michigan State University in hun Michigan Writers Series.

The t(rain)
again this morning, sky always gray,
grain cars f(lying)
like blackbirds with fieldseed
in their bellies.
The eight o five carrying
g(rain)
sings like tribes
when they migrated north in summer
across the plains
following tracks of herds.
High water into trees.
The lake full of rain.
We say it is someone else
pushing down on the lake
to make it spill over its edge.
While we wait
the woman earth sings with the tribes,
transforms herself
into all things.
After the train
b(rush) burning, the delay of smoke
in the car comes after
we have passed like sound.
Rain hangs fringe from earth woman’s dress.
She holds the delay of truth
until it comes from our mouths.
Coyotes sleep on her lap,
birds fly into the b(ranches) of her hair
while farther down the road
the black snake train wiggles behind her ear.
