‘Insgelijks, amuseert u verder,… dag meneer!’

“When the speeches finally sputtered out, young people in black T-shirts and slacks, Secret Service earbuds wired to their skulls, herded the crowd toward the exit. The literati scrabbled like fiddler crabs, snatching their swag bags packed with glossy consumer magazines, CDs and bad perfume, pinching and clawing, then scuttling off to flag a cab. I was aiming for an exit when one old fool sneezed on me! For a moment, I wanted to beat his face in, but then…
Success has its price. But it also has its rewards. And here she was, my compensation for enduring this trial. Brown-eyed, smooth-skinned, scented like the spring flower she was. She smiled shyly at me and said, “Richard Morris! I can’t believe it! I…I…” She actually stuttered as she pretended to be awed. This goddess wore designer glasses, signifying erudition. Her hair was smooth and perfectly cut, her face unblemished. Her fragrance was like wine before the first sip. Before I said a word she blurted, “I read your book. It was so wonderful! The judges have their heads up their asses!”
Out of the corner of my eye I spied Leon laughing it up with the winner. I turned my back on them and ingested the lovely praise. When my new friend was a student at Amherst or Princeton or wherever, she wrote her thesis on my first novel, blah-blah-blah. But wait, there was more! With cocksure vigor she launched into a debate of magical realism (she had read my pointed essay in The New York Review of Books last year) and announced “You’re full of shit”! She argued her case with a verbatim quote! Nothing in the world is more erotic than a beautiful stranger uttering one’s exact words. I fell into her eyes, the pact was sealed.”

Love Recognized

There areAnnotate many things in the world, and you
Are one of them. Many things keep happening and
You are one of them, and the happening that
Is you keeps falling like snow
On the landscape of not-you, hiding hideousness, until
The streets and the world of wrath are choked with snow.

How many things have become silent? Traffic
Is throttled. The mayor
Has been, clearly, remiss, and the city
Was totally unprepared for such a crisis. Nor
Was I- yes, why should this happen to me?
I have always been a law-abiding citizen.

But you, like snow, like love, keep falling.

And it is not certain that the world will not be
Covered in a glitter of crystalline whiteness.

Silence.

The Nature of a Mirror

The sky has murder in the eye, and I
Have murder in the heart, for I
Am only human.
We look at each other, the sky and I.
We understand each other, for

For the solstice of summer has sagged. I stand
And wait. Virtue is rewarded, that
Is the nightmare, and I must tell you

That soon now, even before
The change from Daylight Savings Time, the sun,
Beyond the western ridge of black-burnt pine stubs like
A snaggery of rotten shark teeth, sinks
Lower, larger, more blank, and redder than
A mother’s rage, as though
F.D.R. had never run for office even, or the first vagina
Had not had the texture of dream. Time

Is the mirror into which you stare.

Doch jetzt stehts fest in mir:
Ich bleibe hier.«

»Komm heim!« begehrten sie mit zornigem Befehle
Und rüttelten am Tor die Pfähle.
Da griff ein rasender Orkan
Mein schwaches Blockhaus an.
Als wie mit tausend Händen
Packt ers zugleich an allen Enden.

“Dr. Finn, of Killaloe, in county Clare, was as well known in those parts,–the confines, that is, of the counties Clare, Limerick, Tipperary, and Galway,–as was the bishop himself who lived in the same town, and was as much respected. Many said that the doctor was the richer man of the two, and the practice of his profession was extended over almost as wide a district. Indeed the bishop whom he was privileged to attend, although a Roman Catholic, always spoke of their dioceses being conterminate. It will therefore be understood that Dr. Finn,–Malachi Finn was his full name,–had obtained a wide reputation as a country practitioner in the west of Ireland. And he was a man sufficiently well to do, though that boast made by his friends, that he was as warm a man as the bishop, had but little truth to support it. Bishops in Ireland, if they live at home, even in these days, are very warm men; and Dr. Finn had not a penny in the world for which he had not worked hard. He had, moreover, a costly family, five daughters and one son, and, at the time of which we are speaking, no provision in the way of marriage or profession had been made for any of them. Of the one son, Phineas, the hero of the following pages, the mother and five sisters were very proud. The doctor was accustomed to say that his goose was as good as any other man’s goose, as far as he could see as yet; but that he should like some very strong evidence before he allowed himself to express an opinion that the young bird partook, in any degree, of the qualities of a swan. From which it may be gathered that Dr. Finn was a man of common-sense.”

Der Haselstrauch

Vater, laß mich spielen gehen,
Spielen an dem Haselstrauch!
Seine gelben Schäfchen wehen
Lustig in des Märzen Hauch!
“Kind, mein Kind, da ist’s so traurig,
Gehe nicht zur Hasel schaurig!”

Schaurig? Traurig? Vater scherzet;
In der Dämmrung stillem Grau
Küßt in Thränen dort, und herzet
Sanft mich eine schöne Frau.
“Kind, bleib fern von diesem Weibe,
Böses sinnt sie deinem Leibe!”

Ach wie kann sie Böses sinnen?
Meine Mutter ist die Frau.
Warum weilt sie nicht hier innen,
Vater, sag mir das genau.
“Ist ein Geist, des Leibes ledig;
Gott sey meiner Seele gnädig!”

Nieder stürzt der Vater, Knabe
Geht verwundert zu dem Baum;
Dort sitzt es auf einem Grabe
Bleich und neblig wie ein Traum,
Mutter herzt das Kind zur Stunde,
Röthlich glüht am Hals die Wunde!
