Uit: A Day Late and A Dollar Short

“When ain’t nobody there but him (which ain’t often ‘cause he can’t stand being by hisself more than a few hours), he do crossword puzzles. Hard ones. And he good at it. These he do finish. And from what I gather, he done let hundreds of women walk through his revolving door for a day or two but then all he do is complain about Donnetta, his ex-wife, who he ain’t been married to now going on six years, so most of ‘em don’t come back. And don’t let him get a buzz going. Every other word outta his mouth is Donnetta.
He talk about her like they just got divorced yesterday. “She wanted a perfect man,” he claimed, or, “I almost killed myself trying to please that woman.” But even though Donnetta was a little slow, she was nice, decent. After I’d left Cecil for the third time, I stayed with ‘em for close to a month. By the second week, I was almost ready for the loony bin. First off, Donnetta couldn’t cook nothing worth eating; she wasn’t exactly Oprah when it came to having a two-way conversation; cleaning house was at the bottom of her things-to-do list; and that boy needed his ass beat at least twice a day but she only believed in that white folks’ “time-out” mess. She didn’t have as much sense as a Christmas turkey, and how you supposed to lead a child down a path when you lost your damnself? »

“Samantha and Jil shared a laugh and sat down. Frankie followed them while silently sizing up her fellow guest. She hated herself for so easily categorizing people, but she was after all a scientist, and methodology had to start somewhere. As Jil Taillou reached for an olive, Frankie decided he was definitely gay, on the board of City Opera, well read, and actually from Brooklyn. Nobody’s real name is Jil Taillou, especially if they worked at Sotheby’s. Plus anyone with that kind of untraceable Middle European accent most likely studied French at Midwood High in Brooklyn.
At this point in her life, Frankie wished all her hosts would stop inviting an extra man to dinner for her. She frankly would prefer not having the illusion of an escort. Besides, these men were always decidedly unavailable but full of opinions, gossip, and connections. But every hostess she knew insisted on an even number of boy-girl seating. Frankie looked forward to a time when she’d be too old for anyone to bother.
“So there I was in Rome with Beatrice.” Jil made the point of using the Italian pronunciation. “And we are supposed to fly to Beirut the next day for Amir’s engagement party.
And you know Mrs. Ouiss had organized the most fabulous party. But we can’t go because the entire country is on strike.”
“Oh, the Italians are always on strike.” Samantha lit a cigarette.
“No, but here’s the best part. We had the party in the Vatican instead.”
“No!” Samantha seemed riveted.
“Really?” Frankie attempted to dive in.
“Beatrice is related somehow to the captain of the guards who gives private tours to Barbra Streisand and Sting in the pope’s closet.”
Samantha grinned. “I love this!”

Uit: The Four Fingers Of Death

« McClintock, he later remarked in interviews, didn’t want to be a pitching coach or a scout. Despite a preponderance of evidence to the contrary, Dave McClintock believed that there was a future in professional sport for a man with a mechanical arm. He might need to become a position player, an off-the-bench type, at least until the technology improved. He might need to warm the bench for a time. But, he believed, he need not give up the game.
After all, the owners and their handpicked commissioner had already determined that they could not keep ahead of the advances taking place in the demimonde of stealth performance enhancers. What was working well for athletes of the Sino-Indian Economic Compact could work for NAFTA athletes as well. It was impractical to think otherwise. Like Rosa Parks before him, McClintock saw the future clearly and knew. What was a mechanical arm but an elaborate kind of performance enhancement? Sport is entertainment, he observed in his diary entries from the hospital. Sport is not devoted to an idealized human body. Sport is not about winning, and it is not about some masculine pie-in-the-sky notion of heroism and team play. Sport is like breathing fire onstage or spitting up blood while wearing a latex devil’s mask. McClintock, with the cooperation of his agent, Phil Blank, convened a press conference on the day of his release from the Hospital for Special Surgical Interventions. Only a handful of reporters showed, and only one of them wrote a feature, but what this pimply hack from MLB.com discovered was a charming, upbeat, marketable ballplayer with a titanium arm, who, while grinning his relentlessly upbeat grin, waved aloft his bionic, or perhaps cybernetic, appendage and said, “I bet I can hit sixty-five homers a year with this thing!”
