Begane Grond

Our lift talks to me, as I go up
or down, in a gentle, protective tone.
“We are here,” she says “you may go”.
She tells me the floor we have reached,
always lets me know where I am.

But whenever I descend to go out
into these streets I do not belong to,
“Begane grond” she intones, in a voice
which sounds to me slightly concerned,
“Here,” I think she says, “here’s the world,

open the door, go. And do not fret,
everyone here is as foreign as you are.
No one belongs. Not anywhere.”

Wear And Tear

I had a blue pullover,
a cross between turquoise and sky blue.
It was my favourite, the one I wore most often.
We went through a lot together, it and I,
its colour let friends recognise me from afar.

It was a gift from Elsa;
time took its toll on it.

It thinned at the elbows, the cuffs became slack,
it sagged, wouldn’t fit me properly,
holes could no longer be darned.
Finally, together with other old clothes,
my mother sent it off to a home for the elderly.

It was on a day
years after I had last seen Elsa.

Now, I suppose, there’s an old man
wandering the streets of Istanbul,
walking into shops, gazing at the sea,
on his aged frame a blue pullover:
proof Elsa once loved me.

Letter To My Wife

Beneath, the nether worlds, deep, still, and mute.
Silence howls in my ears, and I cry out.
No answer could come back, it is so far
From that sad Serbia swooned into war.
And you’re so distant. But my heart redeems
Your voice all day, entangled in my dreams.
So I am still, while close about me sough
The great cold ferns, that slowly stir and bow.

When I’ll see you, I don’t know. You whose calm
Is as the weight and sureness of a psalm,
Whose beauty’s like the shadow and the light,
Whom I could find if I were blind and mute,
Hide in the landscape now, and from within
Leap to my eye, as if cast by my brain.
You were real once; now you have fallen in
To that deep well of teenage dreams again.
Jealous interrogations: tell me; speak.
Do you still love me? Will you on that peak
Of my past youth become my future wife?
– but now I fall awake to real life
And know that’s what you are: wife, friend of years
– just far away. Beyond three wild frontiers.
And Fall comes. Will it also leave with me?
Kisses are sharper in the memory.

Daylight and miracles seemed different things.
Above, the echelons of bombers’ wings:
Skies once amazing blue with your eyes’ glow
Are darkened now. Tight with desire to blow,
The bombs must fall. I live in spite of these,
A prisoner. All of my fantasies
I measure out. And I will find you still;
For you I’ve walked the full length of the soul,

The highways of countries! – on coals of fire,
If needs must, in the falling of the pyre,
If all I have is magic, I’ll come back;
I’ll stick as fast as bark upon an oak!
And now that calm, whose habit is a power
And weapon to the savage, in the hour
Of fate and danger, falls as cool and true
As does a wave: the sober two times two.

Uit: Give a Boy a Gun

“About Gary
Mrs. Searle and Gary moved into the house next to ours the day before second grade began. So the first time I actually saw him was at the bus stop. He was kind of quiet, but friendly enough. Some of the kids at the bus stop would play soccer in the street in the morning. I was glad when Gary came along, because I wasn’t into that, and with Gary there it gave me something to do. We’d most-ly talk about stuff like Magic cards and video games and what we saw on TV. If you want to know the truth, I think Mrs. Searle was a little overprotective. I guess because she was the only parent. She always wanted to know where Gary was going, and would he be warm enough, and junk like that. Gary would just roll his eyes. Until Brendan came along, I think I was pretty much Gary’s best friend. The thing about Gary was that mysterious part of him that you never knew. It was like something he kept hidden and private. I can’t explain it, but I could feel it when I was with him. He’d just get quiet and you knew he was a dillion miles away. I always thought maybe it was some-thing about his parents getting divorced. — Ryan Clancy, a friend of both Gary’s and Brendan’s
Gary Searle was a very sweet little boy with slightly reddish brown hair and big, round eyes. He was polite and quiet and always did what he was told. I do recall that some of the children teased him about his weight. But you know how kids are at that age. — Ruth Hollington, Gary’s fourth-grade teacher at Middletown Elementary School
I didn’t move to Middletown until fifth grade, so I didn’t know Gary before that.
After we started hanging out, he’d sometimes talk about what it was like when he was younger. About the divorce and how com-pletely nasty it was, and how after it was over, his dad just left and never paid child support or called or anything. That was a huge thorn in Gary’s side. He just couldn’t get over that. —Allison Findley, Gary’s on-and-off girl-friend at Middletown High School
It was an ugly divorce. All that yelling and fighting. Arguing over money. Gary was caught in the middle, and sometimes I guess I used him to get what I thought I needed. What we both needed. It’s a terrible thing to put a child through, but I didn’t know what else to do. —Cynthia Searle, Gary’s mother
“As parents, teachers, and other adults look for ways to reach out to young people, some see a common thread in the disappointments and isolation students experience when they lose a sense of place, lose a parental figure, or lose a girlfriend.”

When I A Householder Became

Early in the morning, when the dawn is on the roofs,
You hear his wheels come rolling, you hear his horses hoofs;
You hear the bottles clinking, and then he drives away:
You yawn in bed, turn over, and begin another day!

The old-time dairy maids are dear to every poet’s heart-
I’d rather be the dairy man and drive a little cart,
And bustle round the village in the early morning blue,
And hang my reigns upon a hook, as I’ve seen Casey do.

Washing The Dishes

WHEN we on simple rations sup
How easy is the washing up!
But heavy feeding complicates
The task by soiling many plates.

And though I grant that I have prayed
That we might find a serving-maid,
I’d scullion all my days I think,
To see Her smile across the sink!

I wash, she wipes. In water hot
I souse each pan and dish and pot;
While taffy mutters, purrs, and begs,
And rubs himself against my legs.

The man who never in his life
Has washed the dishes with his wife
Or polished up the silver plate-
He still is largely celibate.

One warning: there is certain ware
That must be handled with all care:
The Lord Himself will give you up
If you should drop a willow cup!

Uit: Quo vadis? (Vertaald door Jeremiah Curtin)

“Of course they do. Thou wilt not pass any basilica, bath, library, or book-shop without seeing a poet gesticulating like a monkey. Agrippa, on coming here from the East, mistook them for madmen. And it is just such a time now. Cxsar writes verses; hence all follow in his steps. Only it is not permitted to write better verses than Cxsar, and for that reason I fear a little for Lucan. But I write prose, with which, however, I do not honor myself or others. What the lector has to read are codicilli of that poor Fabricius Veiento.” “Why ‘poor’?” “Because it has been communicated to him that he must dwell in Odyssa and not return to his domestic hearth till he receives a new command. That Odyssey will be easier for him than for Ulysses, since his wife is no Penelope. I need not tell thee, for that matter, that he acted stupidly. But here no one takes things otherwise than superficially. His is rather a wretched and dull little book, which people have begun to read passionately only when the author is banished. Now one hears on every side, `Scandala! scandala!’ and it may be that Veiento invented some things; but I, who know the city, know our patres and our women, assure thee that it is all paler than reality. Meanwhile every man is searching in the book,—for himself with alarm, for his acquaintances with delight. At the book-shop of Avirnus a hundred copyists are writing at dictation, and its success is assured.” “Are not thy affairs in it?” “They are; but the author is mistaken, for I am at once worse and less flat than he represents me. Seest thou we have lost long since the feeling of what is worthy or unworthy,—and to me even it seems that in real truth there is no difference between them, though Seneca, Musonius, and Trasca pretend that they see it. To me it is all one!”

Too Much Friendship. The Story Of Septimius And Alcander (Fragment)

Alas, as soon as ever Septimius set eyes on the lady
Hypatia — or rather she set eyes on him — he knew
that he was madly in love with her ! At this point
the srave Alcander becomes inhuman in the correct-
ness of his attitude. That magnanimity should
forbid anger, may be right, though we should have
chosen a warmer word — his ‘large firm eyes filled
with concern and pity,’ are well enough — but the
philosophic turn of mind which makes him instantly
recall every work that he had ever read on Friend-
ship, the arithmetical nicety with which he balances
his emotional account without a thought of the lady,
is altogether too Gibbonian. He does not even
‘sigh as a lover’ Avhile he ‘obeys’ as a friend. This
is not ‘Too Much Friendship,’ it is ‘Too Much
Philosophy.’ No doubt the problem, for any one
Avho cares about friendship, is harder than it looks
at first sight. Shakespeare himself came to grief
over it in The Two Gentlemeii of Verona ; but
Valentine’s impetuous offer of Sylvia to Proteus,
though loyalty cries out against it, rings true beside
this calculated and selfish self-denial. Hypatia, very
naturally, seems to have been glad of the exchange ;
but Hypatia’s kinsmen took a different view, and
they made the life of Alcander a burden to him.
‘The words the words pursued.’
His own words were not of the least avail, and at
last he was sold for a slave; but still Apollo went
smiling on, and Alcander communed with books and
wrote on frizzled skins and kept himself alive with Hope.
‘ Hope who still drops her anchor in life’s sand,
And to firm hold the atoms loose would band,
That life’s tossed ship outride the tempest’s rage ;
Hope, that to ease turns pain, to youth turns age :
Hope, that in mortal nature so is fixed,
That no damned wretch in misery’s mortar mixed,
No sodden villain brought to extreme shame.
Would change to other, and not be the same :
Albeit both high and low would willingly
Add to themselves another’s share of good,
Desiring this man’s fame, and that man’s Avealth,
Yonder man’s beauty, and that other’s health;
So they these goods upon their own might pile.
But never cease to be themselves the while :
Hope bade him live.’

Carmina

III

Rouwt Lieflijkheden, rouwt Begeerlijkheden,
Het was niet weg te lokken van haar schoot;
Zoo’n aardig sijsje hebt gij mij ontrukt.
O wandaad! O arm sijsje! ’t Is om jou,
dat nu de oogjes van mijn zoetelief
rood en gezwollen van de traantjes zijn.

IV

’t roemruchtig Rhodos, ’t onherbergzaam Thracisch oord

“Besides Asklepios, I have had dealings with sons of Asklepios. When I was troubled a little last year in the bladder, they performed an incubation for me. I saw that they were tricksters, but I said to myself: ‘What harm! The world stands on deceit, and life is an illusion. The soul is an illusion too. But one must have reason enough to distinguish pleasant from painful illusions.’ I shall give command to burn in my hypocaustum, cedar-wood sprinkled with ambergris, for during life I prefer perfumes to stenches. As to Kypris, to whom thou hast also confided me, I have known her guardianship to the extent that I have twinges in my right foot. But as to the rest she is a good goddess! I suppose that thou wilt bear sooner or later white doves to her altar.”
“True,” answered Vinicius. “The arrows of the Parthians have not reached my body, but a dart of Amor has struck me—unexpectedly, a few stadia from a gate of this city.”
“By the white knees of the Graces! thou wilt tell me of this at a leisure hour.”
“I have come purposely to get thy advice,” answered Marcus.
But at that moment the epilatores came, and occupied themselves with Petronius. Marcus, throwing aside his tunic, entered a bath of tepid water, for Petronius invited him to a plunge bath.
“Ah, I have not even asked whether thy feeling is reciprocated,” said Petronius, looking at the youthful body of Marcus, which was as if cut out of marble. “Had Lysippos seen thee, thou wouldst be ornamenting now the gate leading to the Palatine, as a statue of Hercules in youth.”
The young man smiled with satisfaction, and began to sink in the bath, splashing warm water abundantly on the mosaic which represented Hera at the moment when she was imploring Sleep to lull Zeus to rest. Petronius looked at him with the satisfied eye of an artist.
When Vinicius had finished and yielded himself in turn to the epilatores, a lector came in with a bronze tube at his breast and rolls of paper in the tube.
“Dost wish to listen?” asked Petronius.
“If it is thy creation, gladly!” answered the young tribune; “if not, I prefer conversation. Poets seize people at present on every street corner.”

Too Much Friendship. The Story Of Septimius And Alcander (Fragment)

When Athens, fallen beneath the Roman sway,
Kept still the relics of her bygone day,
The youth who most adorned her sacred hill
Was named Alcander: by Apollo’s will
Votive to those high arts the god has given
To penetrate the ways of earth and heaven :
To whom no less the blind wheel-goddess spared
Her largess lavish ; so that few compared
In happiness with him, and one alone
His rival in men”’s expectation shone,
This was Septimius, who, of Roman name.
To Athens o”er the Tyrrhene waters came,
And held in rhetoric renown as high
As the other equalled in philosophy.
Nor lacked there kindliness between the two
From first, which into closest friendship grew.
The god of arts from their arts different
Inspired them peace, and benediction sent :

And in his sphere, the intellectual sky
Bade his satellites move in harmony.
Long lingered they in youth’s fair indolence,
And still would he that noble calm dispense
Which “’tis the due of youth from life to gain
Before dark Care begin her iron reign,
And break the prime : but ah ! there came at length
The breaking time : when youth his fiery strength
To match against the awaiting world is moved.
In life’s wide lists desirous to be proved.

Hunger

So also ob man ihm Spiegel entgegenrecke,
Aus denen sein künftiges Angesicht sprach;

Before the storm

You sit upon the peak and on your knees asleep
that youthful woman ripened for your love; behind,
the bristly deeds of war; beware! hold dear and keep

your life, hold dear your world which you with hardened hands
have built around your life while all about you death
in circles hovered around and around above the lands –

behold, it has returned! the garden’s nests from the high
treetops come plunging down in terror stricken flight,
all things are about to break! and keep an eye on the sky

because already lightning shakes the firmament;
wind tussles, drags the cradles as the men-folk whimper
asleep as weakly as the helpless innocent;

the wind blows on their dreams, they grumble and turn around,
they wake with a start and stare at you who’s been awake
and sitting up amid the fleeting thunder, the sound

of roaring future battles being prepared; above,
the splendid wind speaks of the storm and so do the clouds;
it’s time to wrap your woman warmly in your love.

Fragment

I lived upon this earth in such an age
when man was so debased he sought to kill
for pleasure, not just to comply with orders,
his faith in falsehoods drove him to corruption,
his life was ruled by raving self-deceptions.

I lived upon this earth in such an age
that idolized the sly police informers,
whose heroes were the killers, spies, the thieves —
and the few who held their peace or only failed
to cheer were loathed like victims of the plague.

I lived upon this earth in such an age
when those who risked protest were wise to hide
and gnaw their fists in self-consuming shame —
the crazed folk grinned about their terrifying
doomed future, wild and drunk on blood and mire.

I lived upon this earth in such an age
when the mother of an infant was a curse,
when pregnant women were glad to abort,
the living envied the corpses in the graves
while on the table foamed their poisoned cup.

Uit: Quo Vadis? (Vertaald door Paul Seliger)

»Corbulo!

Uit: The Isolated Ones: Vincent van Gogh (Les Isolés : Vincent van Gogh)

„Yet, this respect and his love for the reality of things does not suffice alone to explain or to characterize the profound, complex, and quite distinctive art of Vincent van Gogh. No doubt, like all the painters of his race, he is very conscious of material reality, of its importance and its beauty, but even more often, he considers this enchantress only as a sort of marvelous language destined to translate the Idea. He is, almost always, a Symbolist . . . who feels the continual need to clothe his ideas in precise, ponderable, tangible forms, in intensely sensual and material exteriors. In almost all his canvases, beneath this morphic exterior, beneath this flesh that is very much flesh, beneath this matter that is very much matter, there lies, for the spirit, that knows how to find it, a thought, an idea, and this Idea, the essential substratum of the work, is, at the same time, its efficient and final cause. As for the brilliant and radiant symphonies of colour and line, whatever may be their importance for the painter in his work they are simply expressive means, simply methods of symbolization. Indeed, if we refuse to acknowledge the existence of these idealistic tendencies beneath this naturalist art, a large part of the body of work that we are studying would remain utterly incomprehensible. How would we explain, for example, The Sower that august and disturbing sower, that rustic with his brutally brilliant forehead (bearing at times a distant resemblance to the artist himself), whose silhouette, gesture, and labour have always obsessed Vincent van Gogh, and whom he painted and repainted so often, sometimes beneath skies rubescent at sunset, sometimes amid the golden dust of blazing noons–how could we explain The Sower without considering that idée fixe. that haunts his brain about the necessary advent of a man, a messiah, sower of truth, who would regenerate the decrepitude of our art and perhaps our imbecile and industrialist society?“

The Judgement of the May

COME to the judgement, golden threads

upon golden hair in rich array;

Many a chestnut shakes its heads,

Many a lupine at this day,

Many a white rose in our beds

Waits the judgement of the May.

Oh, like white roses, great white queen,

Come to the judgement, come to-day.

The white stars on thy robes of green

Are like white roses on trees in May:

By me thy stars and flowers are seen,

But now thou seemest far away.

Der verlorne Sohn

Und nun ade, mein Sohn, nun tue gut

Und mach deinem Vater kein Herzeleid.

Und nun ade, mein Leben, mein Blut!

Gedenk deiner Mutter auch alle Zeit!

Gedenk deiner Eltern zu Land uns See;

Du bist unsere Freude, du bist unser Weh!

Mein Sohn! mein Sohn, nimm dich in acht,

Wenn die bösen Buben locken-

Ich folge nicht!

Das hat schon mancher gesagt. –

Juchei!

Der eine erwirbt, der andre verdirbt,

Und jeder dran stirbt.

Vorbei!

Im Sturme, im Sturme wird´s durchgebracht

Das Herz, das Leben, die Liebe!

Wir leben geschwinde wir Herren der Nacht,

Wir Schwelger, wir Spieler, wir – Diebe.

Ich bin gefahren zu Land zu See,

Aus ist mein Spiel und Tanz – Ade!

Die Eltern sind verdorben,

An ihrem Sohn verstorben

verborgen in stille plassen, lichter

Zonnen gaan onder om weder te keren;
maar
als òns daglicht is ondergegaan,
zal ons het eeuwige duister verteren.

Kus mij dus duizendmaal – spoedig gedaan -,
honderdmaal, duizendmaal, – tel je ze alle?
telkens opnieuw weer van voren af aan!

Duizelen moet het van al die getallen
waarvan geen tellen ons kussen meer stoort
noch menig nijdas bewerkt tot vergallen
als hij van zoveel tienduizenden hoort.

Naar huis terug!

Ik ruik de lauwe lentelucht.
De Maartse buien zijn gevlucht
voor ’t zachte zefirsuizen.
Nu mag ik uit dit ballingsland,
waar ’s zomers ’t zonlicht zengt en brandt,
naar blijder kust verhuizen.

Een reislust zonder rust of duur
doortrilt mij met verjongend vuur.
Vaartwel, mijn beste vrinden!
Te zamen gingen wij op reis;
nu zal elk op zijn eigen wijs
den weg naar huis wel vinden.

War Diary

1. Monday Evening

You see, now fear often fingers your heart,

and at times the world seems only distant news;

the old trees guard your childhood for you

as an ever more ancient memory.

Between suspicious mornings and foreboding nights

you have lived half your life among wars,

and now once more, order is glinting toward you

on the raised points of bayonets.

In dreams sometimes the landscape still rises before you,

the home of your poetry, where the scent of freedom

wafts over the meadows, and in the morning when you wake,

you carry the scent with you.

Rarely, when you are working, you half-sit, frightened

at your desk. And it’s as if you were living in soft mud;

your hand, adorned with a pen, moves heavily

and ever more gravely.

The world is turning into another war—a hungry cloud

gobbles the sky’s mild blue, and as it darkens,

your young wife puts her arms around you,

and weeps.

2. Tuesday Evening

Now I sleep peacefully

and slowly go about my work—

gas, airplanes, bombs are poised against me,

I can neither be afraid, nor cry;

so I live hard, like the road builders

among the cold mountains,

who, if their flimsy house

crumbles over them with age,

put up a new one, and meanwhile

sleep deeply on fragrant wood shavings,

and in the morning, splash their faces

in the cold and shining streams.

                         *

I live high up, and peer around:

it is getting darker.

As when from a ship’s prow

at the flash of lightning

the watchman cries out, thinking he sees land,

so I believe in the land also—and still I cry out life!

with a whitened voice.

And the sound of my voice brightens

and is carried far away

with a cool star and a cool evening wind

Uit: Give a Boy a Gun

“Around 10 P.M. on Friday, February 27, Gary Searle died in the gymnasium at Middletown High School. After the bullet smashed through the left side of his skull and tore into his brain, he probably lived for ten to fifteen seconds.

The brain is a fragile organ suspended in a liquid environment. Not only does a bullet destroy whatever brain tissue is in its path, but the shock waves from the impact severely jar the entire organ, ripping apart millions of delicate structures and connections. In the seconds that follow, the brain swells with blood and other fluids. The parts of the brain that control breathing and heartbeat stop. One doctor described it to me as ‘an earthquake in the head.’

At the moment of Gary’s death I was in the library at the state university, where I was a sophomore studying journalism. As soon as I heard the news, I went home to Middletown, determined not to leave until I understood what had happened there.

Returning to Middletown was like stepping into a thick fog of bewilderment, fury, agony, and despair. For weeks I staggered through it, searching out other lost, wandering souls. Some were willing to talk to me. Others spoke because they felt a need to defend themselves even though no one had pointed an accusing finger at them. Some even sought me out because they wanted to talk. As if speaking about it was a way of trying to figure it out, of beginning the long, painful process of grieving and moving ahead.”

Our House

IT should be yours, if I could build

The quaint old dwelling I desire,

With books and pictures bravely filled

And chairs beside an open fire,

White-panelled rooms with candles lit–

I lie awake to think of it!

A dial for the sunny hours,

A garden of old-fashioned flowers–

Say marigolds and lavender

And mignonette and fever-few,

And Judas-tree and maidenhair

And candytuft and thyme and rue–

All these for you to wander in.

A Chinese carp (called Mandarin)

Waving a sluggish silver fin

Deep in the moat: so tame he comes

To lip your fingers offering crumbs.

Tall chimneys, like long listening ears,

White shutters, ivy green and thick,

And walls of ruddy Tudor brick

Grown mellow with the passing years.

And windows with small leaded panes,

Broad window-seats for when it rains;

A big blue bowl of pot pourri

And–yes, a Spanish chestnut tree

To coin the autumn’s minted gold.

A summer house for drinking tea–

All these (just think!) for you and me.

A staircase of the old black wood

Cut in the days of Robin Hood,

And banisters worn smooth as glass

Down which your hand will lightly pass;

A piano with pale yellow keys

For wistful twilight melodies,

And dusty bottles in a bin–

All these for you to revel in!

But when? Ah well, until that time

We’ll habit in this house of rhyme.

Dedication for a Fireplace

THIS hearth was built for thy delight,

For thee the logs were sawn,

For thee the largest chair, at night,

Is to the chimney drawn.

For thee, dear lass, the match was lit

To yield the ruddy blaze–

May Jack Frost give us joy of it

For many, many days.

“Bravo !

Love’s Consolation

All who have loved, be sure of this from me,

That to have touched one little ripple free

Of golden hair, or held a little hand

Very long since, is better than to stand

Rolled up in vestures stiff with golden thread,

Upon a throne o’er many a bowing head

Of adulators; yea, and to have seen

Thy lady walking in a garden green,

‘Mid apple blossoms and green twisted boughs,

Along the golden gravel path, to house

Herself, where thou art watching far below,

Deep in thy bower impervious, even though

Thou never give her kisses after that,

Is sweeter than to never break the flat

Of thy soul’s rising, like a river tide

That never foams; yea, if thy lady chide

Cruelly thy service, and indeed becomes

A wretch, whose false eyes haunt thee in all rooms,

‘Tis better so, than never to have been

An hour in love; than never to have seen

Thine own heart’s worthiness to shrink and shake,

Like silver quick, all for thy lady’s sake,

Weighty with truth, with gentleness as bright.

’t heilige graf van de oude Battus;

Engel

Staar naar de uitgebloeide windroos
op het hoofd van de bloedende hoos.
Klapper kruimels in mijn kruin en kruis
mijn armen, mijn vingers, mijn ogen,
verwissel de wind met het maanzaad.

Bespeel mijn natte vinger nog een keer
met je vloeibaar gemoed, je dartele
tanden en een gelaatsuitdrukking of
twee.
