Uit: The 120 Days of Sodom and Other Writings (Inleiding door Simone de Beauvoire vertaald door Austryn Wainhouse en Richard Seaver)

“Just what is his place, however? Why does he merit our inter-est? Even his admirers will readily admit that his work is, for the most part, unreadable; philosophically, it escapes banality only to founder in incoherence. As to his vices, they are not startlingly original; Sade invented nothing in this domain, and one finds in psychiatric treatises a profusion of cases at least as interesting as his. The fact is that it is neither as author nor as sexual pervert that Sade compels our attention; it is by virtue of the relationship which he created between these two aspects of himself. Sade’s aberrations begin to acquire value when, instead of enduring them as his fixed nature, he elaborates an immense system in order to justify them. Inversely, his books take hold of us as soon as we become aware that for all their repetitiousness, their plati-tudes and clumsiness, he is trying to communicate an experience whose distinguishing characteristic is, nevertheless, a tendency to first presentation, as this extract shows, Beauvoir’s argument cen-tres on two main claims. First, in ‘assuming’ his ‘aberrations’, rather than enduring them as a natural imposition, Sade made his `psycho-physical destiny’ an ethical choice. This choice is ethical because he transcends the mere fact of his psycho-physical make-up by conferring an absolute value upon the aberrations that constituted it. In an extreme form, Sade demonstrates a general truth: the subjective origin of all value. If nothing has a value in itself, but only that which we confer on it, then anything can be valued, as the case of Sade shows. He also, unusually, demon-strates what is otherwise only implicit in Beauvoir’s (and Sartre’s) existentialist account of the subjective origin of value: the possi-bility of a singular ethic, a one-man morality. Further, he represents what, for most people, is the problem with such a possibility: Sade is a monster whose personal `ethic’ abuses others. In `Must We Burn Sade?’ Beauvoir is clear that Sade’s ethic is not one to be emulated: ‘every time we side with a child whose throat has been slit by a sex maniac, we take a stand against him.’ (Must We Burn Sade?’, p.61) Nevertheless his life has, she says, `an exemplary character’ to the extent that the form (rather than content) of his ethic and its metaphysical motivation has a universal significance. This is explained in the elaboration of the second main claim from the opening pages of Beauvoir’s essay and concerns Sade’s commitment to the principle of subjectiv-ity. Sade’s merit lies `in his having proclaimed aloud what everyone admits with shame to himself(`Must We Burn Sade?’, p.63): the irrecusable fact of the `separateness’ of each individ-ual. This fact is dramatized in Sade’s `persistent singularity’: ‘he had no fellow but himself’.”

Uit: Skippy

“Having arrived at this hasty decision to move within a matter of days, the Adamses settled down to their excellent dinner, which they all ate with relish, for each thought thatthe major problem in his life had just been solved.
Except Skippy, who, until this moment, had had no problems. He lay under the table in his accustomed place by Buzz’ feet. Usually his head was up, his ears pointing forward, his mouth ajar to release his eager panting, his tongue extended, and his expression one of sublime expectancy. But as the human voices grew impassioned, Skippy’s keen perception noted the shades of discontent expressed in each. He cocked his head and began to listen intently. …
Skippy loved the house. He had lived in it practically all his life. Actually, you might almost say it was his. For the thing was, the Adamses had bought it because of him. He had been given to Buzz as a birthday surprise when he, Skippy, was three months old. Until then he had lived in a kennel which could not be considered home life. He and Buzz had recognized each other instantly as dog lover and boy worshiper. Two days later the apartment house agent came over to register the complaint of the people downstairs, who could not accustom their ears to the overwhelming sounds of a boy and his dog. The dog, the agent explained regretfully, must go.”

“’Ah, you ladies! Always on the spot when there’s something happening!’ The voice belonged to Mr Mallett, one of our churchwardens, and its roguish tone made me start guiltily, almost as if I had no right to be discovered outside my own front door. New people moving in? The presence of a furniture van would seem to suggest it,’ he went on pompously. ‘I expect you know about it.’ Well, yes, one usually does,’ I said, feeling rather annoyed at his presumption. ‘It is rather difficult not to know such things.’ I suppose an unmarried woman just over thirty, who lives alone and has no apparent ties, must expect to find herself involved or interested in other people’s business, and if she is also a clergyman’s daughter then one might really say that there is no hope for her. ‘Well, well, tempus fugit, as the poet says,’ called out Mr Mallett as he hurried on. I had to agree that it did, but I dawdled long enough to see the furniture men set down a couple of chairs on the pavement, and as I walked up the stairs to my flat I heard the footsteps of a person in the empty rooms below me, pacing about on the bare boards, deciding where each piece should go. Mrs Napier, I thought, for I had noticed a letter addressed to somebody of that name, marked ‘To Await Arrival’. But now that she had materialised I felt, perversely, that I did not want to see her, so I hurried into my own rooms and began tidying out my kitchen. I met her for the first time by the dustbins, later that afternoon. The dustbins were in the basement and everybody in the house shared them. There were offices on the ground floor and above them the two flats, not properly self-contained and without every convenience. ‘I have to share a bathroom,’ I had so often murmured, almost with shame, as if I personally had been found unworthy of a bathroom of my own. I bent low over the bin and scrabbled a few tea leaves and potato peelings out of the bottom of my bucket. I was embarrassed that we should meet like this. I had meant to ask Mrs Napier to coffee one evening. It was to have been a gracious, civilised occasion, with my best coffee cups and biscuits on little silver dishes. And now here I was standing awkwardly in my oldest clothes, carrying a bucket and a wastepaper basket. Mrs Napier spoke first. ‘You must be Miss Lathbury,’ she said abruptly. ‘I’ve seen your name by one of the door-bells.”

Uit: These Children Who Come at You with Knives

“As if that wasn’t bad enough, the entire sidewalk in both directions had become a river of bodily fluids. Snot and puke and pus and bile and piss all flowed together in a thick noxious stream dotted with islands of shit. Great clouds of fat blackflies hung low over the flood, and even in the chill autumn air the unimaginable stench made Milton’s own gorge rise. Confronted with such a nightmarish landscape, most men would have screamed or called the police or written a strong let-ter of complaint to the EPA. Not Milton, who had almost ex-pected this. He didn’t simply want to identify the culprit anymore. He wanted revenge. This was a malicious premeditated attack aimed at him personally. He knew that. And whoever was responsible would pay. That night, instead of waiting by the window, Milton stepped outside, crossed the street, and hid in a darkened, recessed door-way. From that vantage point he could see a good stretch of side-walk in either direction. He would hide in that doorway as long as it took. The streets were silent. Even the cars were asleep. At the stroke of four, as Milton’s eyelids began to grow quite heavy, he caught a quick movement across the street to his left. A shadow dashed beneath a streetlamp. He strained his eyes but could see nothing. There was another dark flash to his right. In the pool of light he definitely saw a small leg. Another figure came dancing around the corner, fully visible, and Milton nearly let loose with a yelp of surprise. It was a tiny man, no more than three feet tall. He looked human, apart from the pointed ears, the stupid haircut, the peaked red cap, and a pair of strange curly-toed boots. Aside from the hat and the boots, the little man was naked as a jaybird. Not just naked, Milton noted with revulsion, but pissing as well. Dancing in circles and pissing. In his hands he held a crystal bucket. Milton couldn’t tell what was contained in the bucket, but whatever it was the little man was splashing it on the sidewalk as he danced and pissed. The bucket, though tiny, seemed to hold a bottomless supply of something thick and green. A second little man, equally naked apart from the hat and boots, came dancing down the block, snorting and spitting an endless stream of phlegm in every direction. Soon there was a third and a fourth and a fifth.

„There was a helidrone thumping in wide, slow circles high overhead. Apart from that, the neighborhood was silent.

Wally Philco pulled the front door closed behind him with a scrape and heavy click. It sounded final in the still morning air. From the top of the brownstone stoop he surveyed the sidewalk below. He knew he should’ve done this before stepping outside, but it was too late now. He was exposed. His eyes scanned the empty concrete to his right, then his left. It seemed clear.

As he slowly began to descend the steps he saw them a full block away, silhouettes in the dim grainy light. Three of them were gathered at the corner, talking among themselves in voices far too low to hear at this distance. They were spread out across the sidewalk, making any easy passage difficult, if not impossible. Of course, trying to walk around or between them wasn’t even an issue.

Wally dropped into a crouch, knees be damned, trying to hide behind the skeletal iron banister. It was useless. Hardly any cover at all. If they saw him he was doomed. His only hope was that they were too preoccupied to notice.

The trick, he’ d learned through painful experience, was to get across the street before they caught a whiff of him. If he could just get across the street things should be okay.

Still crouching, briefcase in hand, he checked the road. There were no cars approaching from either direction. That was both a blessing and a curse. It meant he wouldn’t have to do any risky dodging through hostile traffic (at a mildly battered and soft forty-three, he no longer dodged the way he used to), but it also meant he wouldn’t be able to use the noise and moving cars for cover.“

Die nichts will außer Auflösung.

Uit: The Stone Diaries

My mother’s name was Mercy Stone Goodwill. She was only thirty years old when she took sick, a boiling hot day, standing there in her back kitchen, making a Malvern pudding for her husband’s supper. A cookery book lay open on the table: “Take some slices of stale bread,” the recipe said, “and one pint of currants; half a pint of raspberries; four ounces of sugar; some sweet cream if available.” Of course she’s divided the recipe in half, there being just the two of them, and what with the scarcity of currants, and Cuyler (my father) being a dainty eater. A pick-and-nibble fellow, she calls him, able to take his food or leave it.

It shames her how little the man eats, diddling his spoon around in his dish, perhaps raising his eyes once or twice to send her one of his shy, appreciative glances across the table, but never taking a second helping, just leaving it all for her to finish up — pulling his hand through the air with that dreamy gesture of his that urges her on. And smiling all the while, his daft tender-faced look. What did food mean to a working man like himself? A bother, a distraction, perhaps even a kind of price that had to be paid in order to remain upright and breathing.

Well, it was a different story for her, for my mother. Eating was as close to heaven as my mother ever came. (In our day we have a name for a passion as disordered as hers.)

And almost as heavenly as eating was the making — how she gloried in it! Every last body on this earth has a particular notion of paradise, and this was hers, standing in the murderously hot back kitchen of her
own house, concocting and contriving, leaning forward and squinting at the fine print of the cookery book, a clean wooden spoon in hand.”

Uit: Tess of the d’Urbervilles

„The parson rode a step or two nearer.

‘It was only my whim,’ he said; and, after a moment’s hesitation: ‘It was on account of a discovery I made some little time ago, whilst I was hunting up pedigrees for the new county history. I am Parson Tringham, the antiquary, of Stagfoot Lane. Don’t you really know, Durbeyfield, that you are the lineal representative of the ancient and knightly family of the d’Urbervilles, who derive their descent from Sir Pagan d’Urberville, that renowned knight who came from Normandy with William the Conqueror, as appears by Battle Abbey Roll?’

‘Never heard it before, sir?’

‘Well it’s true. Throw up your chin a moment, so that I may catch the profile of your face better. Yes, that’s the d’Urberville nose and chin—a little debased. Your ancestor was one of the twelve knights who assisted the Lord of Estremavilla in Normandy in his conquest of Glamorganshire. Branches of your family held manors over all this part of England; their names appear in the Pipe Rolls in the time of King Stephen. In the reign of King John one of them was rich enough to give a manor to the Knights Hospitallers; and in Edward the Second’s time your forefather Brian was summoned to Westminster to attend the great Council there. You declined a little in Oliver Cromwell’s time, but to no serious extent, and in Charles the Second’s reign you were made Knights of the Royal Oak for your loyalty. Aye, there have been generations of Sir Johns among you, and if knighthood were hereditary, like a baronetcy, as it practically was in old times, when men were knighted from father to son, you would be Sir John now.’

‘Ye don’t say so!’

‘In short,’ concluded the parson, decisively smacking his leg with his switch, ’there’s hardly such another family in England.’

„Such was the state of affairs in my home when, one morning, I sat in a large room which lay on the shady side of the house and which was set apart for the transaction of all business matters. For that reason it overlooked the courtyard, an arrangement which enabled me to keep under my own eye everything relating to the administration of my affairs.

Before me stood a trusted servant, who had for a number of years accompanied me on all my journeys and to whom I was giving exact instructions with regard to the taking of a caravan to a somewhat distant spot. Along with these directions I was, of course, describing to him
the best mode of disposing of his wares when he got there, the produce he had to bring back with him, the business connections he was to form and other similar matters, for it was my intention to give him full charge of the expedition.

To be sure, my house was less home-like than ever, and one might suppose that I myself would have been glad to embrace every opportunity of roaming about in distant lands. But I was beginning to be somewhat self-indulgent and dainty, and I shunned very distant journeys-not only because of the fatigues to be faced on the way but, above all, on account of the sparing diet to be put up with when actually on the road. Yet even supposing the journey’s end reached, with the possibility of making up for lost time and of having the best of everything, there were numerous disappointments to be reckoned with and I, at least, was never able to dine abroad as well as I did at home. As a result, I had begun to send out my caravans under trusty leaders while I remained behind in Ujjeni.“

„Jane moved quietly about the church, reading inscriptions on wall and floor, noticing, without realising its significance, the well-cleaned brass. She was just standing in front of the lectern, almost dazzled by the fine brilliance of the bird’s head, when she heard footsteps behind her and the sound of women’s voices, talking in rather low, reverent tones, but nonetheless with the authority of those who have the right to talk in church. One voice seemed louder than the other – indeed, when she had listened for a minute or two, Jane decided that the owner of the louder voice was somehow in a superior position to that of the softer one.

‘Harvest Thanksgiving, we call it,’ said the louder voice.

‘Harvest Festival has a rather different connotation, I feel.

There is almost a pagan sound about it.’

‘Oh, yes.’ The softer voice sounded very demure. ‘Festival is altogether more pagan – I could almost see Mr Mortlake in a leopard skin with vine leaves in his hair.’

‘Hush, Jessie,’ said the louder voice on a reproving note. ‘We must not forget that we are in church. Ah, here are Mrs Crampton and Mrs Mayhew. Perhaps we had better start.’

The speakers had now come into view and Jane saw a large woman who gave the impression of being dressed in purple hung about with gold chains, and a smaller
younger one in brown with a vase of dead flowers in her hands.

They were greeting two middle-aged ladies in tweed suits carrying bunches of dahlias.

An English scene, thought Jane, and a precious thing.

“When Cleo was twenty, their sex battle began. It was not a savage fight. She did not struggle against his superior strength. She found a weapon that would cut him down quickly and cleanly. She was ice. Neither her mouth nor her body moved to meet his. The open eyes were wide with mocking at the busyness below. There was no moment when everything in her was wrenched and she was one with the man who could submerge her in himself.

(…)

Here in the market was all the maleness of men. This was their world in which they moved without the command of women….Cleo…was jealous of all the free-striding life around her. She had nothing with which to match it but her wits. Her despotic nature found Mr. Judson a rival. He ruled a store and all the people in it. Her sphere was one troublesome child, who gave insufficient scope for her tremendous vitality.

A Walk on the Beach at Coney Island

Morgan and I sat at that scarred table in Ruby’s for about an hour, listening to the jukebox and ordering another beer. Some of the people who’d been sitting at the bar when we first arrived were starting to leave. There was a cool salt breeze off the Atlantic.

After we were finished with that second round, Morgan asked, “Can we go down to the water?”

“Course. Let’s go.” I took her arm.

The bartender — a tall man with graying hair and a salt-and-pepper mustache — waved and smiled at us as we left.

Different rules altogether, I thought.

We crossed the Boardwalk to the short flight of steps that led down to the sand. Morgan stopped and removed her shoes and socks. I left mine on.

“Aren’t you going to take your shoes off?”

“Naaah, I’ll be fine.”

“You sure? They’ll get all full of sand.”

“I’m okay. I don’t care.”

We walked across the warm sand, Morgan keeping her eyes open for broken glass and stray hypodermic needles, but much to our amazement, the beach was pristine. Soft, smooth, almost completely free of garbage.

A few scattered sunbathers were spread out closer to the water. Most of them were in their fifties or older, the men unself-consciously letting their huge bellies flop over the fronts of their trunks. There was a time when such a thing, for some reason, would have terrified me, but now it struck me as a strange, epic form of grace. They were beyond caring, they were satisfied without arrogance. They didn’t give a good goddam what people though. They were comfortable.”

HER IMMORTALITY

Upon a noon I pilgrimed through

A pasture, mile by mile,

Unto the place where I last saw

My dead Love’s living smile.

And sorrowing I lay me down

Upon the heated sod:

It seemed as if my body pressed

The very ground she trod.

I lay, and thought; and in a trance

She came and stood me by–

The same, even to the marvellous ray

That used to light her eye.

“You draw me, and I come to you,

My faithful one,” she said,

In voice that had the moving tone

It bore in maidenhead.

She said: “‘Tis seven years since I died:

Few now remember me;

My husband clasps another bride;

My children mothers she.

My brethren, sisters, and my friends

Care not to meet my sprite:

Who prized me most I did not know

Till I passed down from sight.”

I said: “My days are lonely here;

I need thy smile alway:

I’ll use this night my ball or blade,

And join thee ere the day.”

A tremor stirred her tender lips,

Which parted to dissuade:

“That cannot be, O friend,” she cried;

“Think, I am but a Shade!

“A Shade but in its mindful ones

Has immortality;

By living, me you keep alive,

By dying you slay me.

“In you resides my single power

Of sweet continuance here;

On your fidelity I count

Through many a coming year.”

–I started through me at her plight,

So suddenly confessed:

Dismissing late distaste for life,

I craved its bleak unrest.

“I will not die, my One of all!–

To lengthen out thy days

I’ll guard me from minutest harms

That may invest my ways!”

She smiled and went. Since then she comes

Oft when her birth-moon climbs,

Or at the seasons’ ingresses

Or anniversary times;

But grows my grief. When I surcease,

Through whom alone lives she,

Ceases my Love, her words, her ways,

Never again to be!

AT AN INN

When we as strangers sought

Their catering care,

Veiled smiles bespoke their thought

Of what we were.

They warmed as they opined

Us more than friends–

That we had all resigned

For love’s dear ends.

And that swift sympathy

With living love

Which quicks the world–maybe

The spheres above,

Made them our ministers,

Moved them to say,

“Ah, God, that bliss like theirs

Would flush our day!”

And we were left alone

As Love’s own pair;

Yet never the love-light shone

Between us there!

But that which chilled the breath

Of afternoon,

And palsied unto death

The pane-fly’s tune.

The kiss their zeal foretold,

And now deemed come,

Came not: within his hold

Love lingered numb.

Why cast he on our port

A bloom not ours?

Why shaped us for his sport

In after-hours?

As we seemed we were not

That day afar,

And now we seem not what

We aching are.

O severing sea and land,

O laws of men,

Ere death, once let us stand

As we stood then!

The Richer, the Poorer, uitgegeven.

Uit: The wedding

“But how Shelby, who could have had her pick of the best of breed in her own race, could marry outside her race, outside her father’s profession, and throw her life away on a nameless, faceless white man who wrote jazz, a frivolous occupation without office, title, or foreseeable future, was beyond the Oval’s understanding.

Between the dark man Liz had married and the music maker Shelby was marrying, there was a whole area of eligible men of the right colors and right professions. For Liz and Shelby to marry so contrary to expectations affronted all the subtle tenets of their training.

Though Shelby might have been headstrong in her choice of a husband, at least she had let her mother dissuade her from following Liz’s lead and eloping. Her wedding would have the Oval setting that Corinne had promised Miss Adelaide Bannister on a golden afternoon in her daughter’s teens.”

Peter will da nicht hin. Peter will da nicht rein. Spürt eine große Gefahr. Und er entscheidet sich. In diesem Moment.

‘It sounded like Hiawatha’s wedding feast,’ said Rhoda in a worried tone, ‘Coleridge Taylor, you know. But I don’t think it could have been that.’

‘Mr. Lewis was improvising,’ said Mrs. Swan. ‘There were nearly a hundred communicants, I should think, and I dare say his thoughts wandered. I suppose the music wasn’t really so very unsuitable, in a way; many Indians are Christians, aren’t they?’

‘These were Red Indians, surely,’ said Malcolm.

They seemed to be getting into rather deep water, so Mabel changed the subject by mentioning that there was to be a procession at the eleven o’clock service.”

I look into my glass

I look into my glass,

And view my wasting skin,

And say, “Would God it came to pass

My heart had shrunk as thin!”

For then, I, undistrest

By hearts grown cold to me,

Could lonely wait my endless rest

With equanimity.

But Time, to make me grieve,

Part steals, lets part abide;

And shakes this fragile frame at eve

With throbbings of noontide.

The darkling thrush

I leant upon a coppice gate,
When Frost was spectre-gray,
And Winter’s dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
The tangled bine-stems scored the sky
Like strings of broken lyres,
And all mankind that haunted nigh
Had sought their household fires.

The land’s sharp features seemed to me
The Century’s corpse outleant,
Its crypt the cloudy canopy,
The wind its death-lament.
The ancient pulse of germ and birth
Was shrunken hard and dry,
And every spirit upon earth
Seemed fervorless as I.

At once a voice arose among
The bleak twigs overhead,
In a full-hearted evensong
Of joy illimited.
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt and small,
With blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
Upon the growing gloom.

So little cause for carolings
Of such ecstatic sound
Was written on terrestrial things
Afar or nigh around,
That I could think there trembled through
His happy good-night air
Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew,
And I was unaware.

“Ya gotta help me out here!”

Oh, Jesus Christ, here we go, Baragon thought, rolling his eyes and fumbling into his limp shirt pocket for the already half-empty pack of cigarettes. Why don’t you people ever call anybody else?

It was quarter after five on a Thursday afternoon in late February. The day had been a slow one in what was amounting to another slow week. Baragon had been thinking about getting himself together to head out, and he should’ve known better than to pick up the telephone when it rang. Old reflexes. Still, other old reflexes should have told him that phones that ring when you’re about to split work never amount to any good.

Ruby, the receptionist, thought she was doing him a favor by putting these people through. She knew what his job entailed and, if only out of common courtesy, he’d never told her any different. Receptionists, especially in a place like this, had enough to deal with already.

“Uh-huh,” Baragon sighed around the cigarette, which he was trying to light without much success. “And, uh . . . what seems to be . . . y’know . . . the problem?”

The man’s voice was ragged and wild, and after that opener, Baragon couldn’t help but think this whole scene sounded like the beginning of some lost Hitchcock film. Two hours later, he’d be sitting on a plane to Honduras, to meet up with a man named “Jeb.”

“I . . .” the voice declared, with a certain dramatic flair, “have been kidnapped . . . by the state of Alaska!”
