Lorena

it lay in my palm soft and trembled
as a new bird and i thought about
authority and how it always insisted
on itself, how it was master
of the man, how it measured him, never
was ignored or denied, and how it promised
there would be sweetness if it was obeyed
just like the saints do, like the angels
and I opened the window and held out my
uncupped hand; I swear to god
I thought it could fly

sorrow song

for the eyes of the children,
the last to melt,
the last to vaporize,
for the lingering
eyes of the children, staring,
the eyes of the children of
buchenwald,
of viet nam and johannesburg,
for the eyes of the children
of nagasaki,
for the eyes of the children
of middle passage,
for cherokee eyes, ethiopian eyes,
russian eyes, american eyes,
for all that remains of the children,
their eyes,
staring at us, amazed to see
the extraordinary evil in
ordinary men.

Uit: Every Day Is for the Thief

There is a wheedling tone in his voice, and the feeling of desperation one senses about him isn’t helped by his dowdy appearance, brown polyester sweater and brown trousers. A stressed-out man in stressed-out clothes. Abdul speaks into the microphone:
—What can I do? The person who is supposed to sign it is not here. That’s why I said come back at three.
—Look, look, that’s my ticket. Abdul, come on now, just look at it. It says five o’clock. I can’t miss that flight. I just can’t miss it.
The man continues to plead, thrusting a piece of paper under the glass. Abdul looks at the ticket with showy reluctance and, exasperated, speaks in low tones into the microphone.
—What can I do? The person is not here. Okay, please go and sit down. I’ll see what can be done. But I can’t promise anything.
The man slinks away, and immediately several others rise from their seats and jostle in front of the window, forms in hand.
—Please, I need mine quickly too. Abeg, just put it next to his.
Abdul ignores them and calls out the next number in the sequence. Some continue to pace near the window. Others retake their seats. One of them, a young man with a sky-blue cap, rubs his eye repeatedly. An older man, seated a few rows ahead of me, puts his head into his hands and says out loud, to no one in particular:
—This should be a time of joy. You know? Going home should be a thing of joy.
Another man, sitting to my right, fills out forms for his children. He informs me that he recently had his passport reissued. I ask him how long it took.
—Well, normally, it’s four weeks.”

The Masters

OH, who is the Lord of the land of life,
When hotly goes the fray?
When, fierce we smile in the midst of strife
Then whom shall we obey?
Oh, Love is the Lord of the land of life
Who holds a monarch’s sway;
He wends with wish of maid and wife,
And him you must obey.
Then who is the Lord of the land of life,
At setting of the sun?
Whose word shall sway when Peace is rife
And all the fray is done?
Then Death is the Lord of the land of life,
When your hot race is run.
Meet then his scythe and pruning-knife
When the fray is lost or won.

The Poet And The Baby

How’s a man to write a sonnet, can you tell,–
How’s he going to weave the dim, poetic spell,–
When a-toddling on the floor
Is the muse he must adore,
And this muse he loves, not wisely, but too well?

Now, to write a sonnet, every one allows,
One must always be as quiet as a mouse;
But to write one seems to me
Quite superfluous to be,
When you ‘ve got a little sonnet in the house.

Just a dainty little poem, true and fine,
That is full of love and life in every line,
Earnest, delicate, and sweet,
Altogether so complete
That I wonder what’s the use of writing mine.

The Pool

By the pool that I see in my dreams, dear love,
I have sat with you time and again;
And listened beneath the dank leaves, dear love,
To the sibilant sound of the rain.

And the pool, it is silvery bright, dear love,
And as pure as the heart of a maid,
As sparkling and dimpling, it darkles and shines
In the depths of the heart of the glade.

But, oh, I ‘ve a wish in my soul, dear love,
(The wish of a dreamer, it seems,)
That I might wash free of my sins, dear love,
In the pool that I see in my dreams.

stond nauw onwillig stil
of hoff’lijk voerde van de trede
de jonge man zijn gade mede,
gedost naar modes laatste gril;
had zich de schone les zien geven
een trap bevallig op te zweven?
Het viel niet sierlijker te doen;

dier ‘lege, lege zee!’
ging hun verbeelding mijm’rend mee!
In schrik bezweem ’t verveelziek staren,
daar rees een hoofd, met blonde haren,
eens jonglings borstbeeld uit de baren:
hoe fier die worst’laar overwon!
En toch door breder reeks van golven
met blinkend schuim al was bedolven,
eer kiesheid zelve blozen kon!

A Whisper of Peace (Reprise)

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),
Verily Mankind is in loss,
Except those who have Faith, and do righteous deeds,
And (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth,
And of Patience and Constancy.

A whisper of peace
Moving through the land,
Allah will surely run to us
If we hold out our hand.
A word of hope,
A call to every woman and man,
A light until the end of time,
This is our Islam.

A whisper of peace
Moving through the land,
Allah will surely run to us
But do we understand?
A word of hope,
A call to every woman and man,
A light until the end of time,
Is this our Islam?

A whisper of peace
Moving through the land,
Allah will surely run to us
But do we understand?
A word of hope,
A call to every woman and man,
A light until the end of time,
Is this our Islam?

A whisper of peace
Moving through the land,
Allah will surely run to us
But do we understand?
A word of hope,
A call to every woman and man,
A light until the end of time,
Is this just a waste of rhyme?
What if we run out of time?
Is this our Islam?

Uit: The Devil To Pay In The Backlands (Vertaald door James L. Taylor en Harriet de Onís)

“I thank you again. All right, then, there is no devil. And no spirits. I never saw any. And if anybody was to see one, it should be me, your humble servant. If I was to tell you… So, the devil rules his black kingdom, in animals, in men, in women. Even in children, I say. For isn’t there a saying: “A child – spawn of the devil?” And in things, in plants, in waters, in the earth, in the wind… “The devil in the street, in the middle of the whirlwind.”
What? Ah, yes. Just an idea of mine, memories of things worse than bad. It’s not that it hurts me to talk about them. It’s better, it relieves me. Look here: in the same ground, and with branches and leaves of the same shape, doesn’t the sweet cassava, which we eat, grow and the bitter cassava, which kills? Now the strange thing is that the sweet cassava can turn poisonous – why, I don’t know. Some say it is from being replanted over in the same soil, from cuttings – it grows more and more bitter and then poisonous. But the other, the bitter cassava, sometimes changes too, and for no reason turns sweet and edible. How do you account for that? And have you ever seen the ugliness of glaring hate in the eyes of a rattlesnake? Or a fat hog, happier every day in its brutishness, that would gladly swallow the whole world if it could, for its filthy satisfaction? And some hawks and crows – just the look of them shows their need to slash and tear with that beak honed sharp by evil desire. There are even breeds of twisted, horrible, rocks, that poison the water in a well, if they lie at the bottom of it. The devil sleeps in them. Did you know that? And the devil – which is the only way you can call a malign spirit – by whose orders and by what right does he goes around doing as he damn well pleases? Mixed up in everything, he is.
What wears him out, little by little, the devil inside folks, is suffering wisely. Also the joy of love – so say my compadre Quelemém. The family. Is that the thing? It is and it isn´t. Everything is and isn´t . The most ferocious criminal, of the worst kind, is often a good husband, a good son, a god father, a good friend of his friends. I´ve known some like that. Only, there is the hereafter – and God too. Many´s the cloud I´ve seen.”

Stimme vielleicht.

It Was A Dream

in which my greater self
rose up before me
accusing me of my life
with her extra finger
whirling in a gyre of rage
at what my days had come to.
what,
i pleaded with her, could i do,
oh what could i have done?
and she twisted her wild hair
and sparked her wild eyes
and screamed as long as
i could hear her
This. This. This.

The Mississippi River Empties Into The Gulf

and the gulf enters the sea and so forth,
none of them emptying anything,
all of them carrying yesterday
forever on their white tipped backs,
all of them dragging forward tomorrow.
it is the great circulation
of the earth’s body, like the blood
of the gods, this river in which the past
is always flowing. every water
is the same water coming round.
everyday someone is standing on the edge
of this river, staring into time,
whispering mistakenly:
only here. only now.

Uit: Every Day Is for the Thief

“I wake up late the morning I’m meant to go to the consulate. As I gather my documents just before setting out, I call the hospital to remind them I won’t be in until the afternoon. Then I enter the subway and make my way over to Second Avenue and, without much trouble, find the consulate. It occupies several floors of a skyscraper. A windowless room on the eighth floor serves as the section for consular services. Most of the people there on the Monday morning of my visit are Nigerians, almost all of them middle-aged. The men are bald, the women elaborately coiffed, and there are twice as many men as there are women. But there are also unexpected faces: a tall Italian-looking man, a girl of East Asian origin, other Africans. Each person takes a number from a red machine as they enter the dingy room. The carpet is dirty, of the indeterminate color shared by all carpets in public places. A wall-mounted television plays a news program through a haze of static. The news continues for a short while, then there is a broadcast of a football match between Enyimba and a Tunisian club. The people in the room fill out forms.
There are as many blue American passports in sight as green Nigerian ones. Most of the people can be set into one of three categories: new citizens of the United States, dual citizens of the United States and Nigeria, and citizens of Nigeria who are taking their American children home for the first time. I am one of the dual citizens, and I am there to have a new Nigerian passport issued. My number is called after twenty minutes. Approaching the window with my forms, I make the same supplicant gesture I have observed in others. The brusque young man seated behind the glass asks if I have the money order. No, I don’t, I say. I had hoped cash would be acceptable. He points to a sign pasted on the glass: “No cash please, money orders only.” He has a name tag on. The fee for a new passport is eighty-five dollars, as indicated on the website of the consulate, but it hadn’t been clear that they don’t accept cash. I leave the building, walk to Grand Central Terminal, fifteen minutes away, stand in line, purchase a money order, and walk the fifteen minutes back. It is cold outside. On my return some forty minutes later, the waiting room is full. I take a new number, make out the money order to the consulate, and wait.
A small group has gathered around the service window. One man begs audibly when he is told to come back at three to pick up his passport:
— Abdul, I have a flight at five, please now. I’ve got to get back to Boston, please, can anything be done?”

Call Me

The eager note on my door said “Call me,”
call when you get in!” so I quickly threw
a few tangerines into my overnight bag,
straightened my eyelids and shoulders, and

headed straight for the door. It was autumn
by the time I got around the corner, oh all
unwilling to be either pertinent or bemused, but
the leaves were brighter than grass on the sidewalk!

Funny, I thought, that the lights are on this late
and the hall door open; still up at this hour, a
champion jai-alai player like himself? Oh fie!
for shame! What a host, so zealous! And he was

there in the hall, flat on a sheet of blood that
ran down the stairs. I did appreciate it. There are few
hosts who so thoroughly prepare to greet a guest
only casually invited, and that several months ago
.

Song (Is It Dirty)

Is it dirty
does it look dirty
that’s what you think of in the city

does it just seem dirty
that’s what you think of in the city
you don’t refuse to breathe do you

someone comes along with a very bad character
he seems attractive. is he really. yes. very
he’s attractive as his character is bad. is it. yes

that’s what you think of in the city
run your finger along your no-moss mind
that’s not a thought that’s soot

and you take a lot of dirt off someone
is the character less bad. no. it improves constantly
you don’t refuse to breathe do you

De Way T’Ings Come

De way t’ings come, hit seems to me,
Is des’ one monst’ous mystery;
De way hit seem to strike a man,
Dey ain’t no sense, dey ain’t no plan;
Ef trouble sta’ts a pilin’ down,
It ain’t no use to rage er frown,
It ain’t no use to strive er pray,
Hit’s mortal boun’ to come dat way.

Now, ef you ’s hongry, an’ yo’ plate
Des’ keep on sayin’ to you, ‘Wait,’
Don’t mek no diffunce how you feel,
‘T won’t do no good to hunt a meal,
Fu’ dat ah meal des’ boun’ to hide
Ontwell de devil’s satisfied,
An’ ’twell dey’s some’p’n by to cyave
You ’s got to ease yo’se’f an’ sta’ve.

But ef dey ’s co’n meal on de she’f
You need n’t bothah ‘roun’ yo’se’f,
Somebody’s boun’ to amble in
An’ ‘vite you to dey co’n meal bin;
An’ ef you ’s stuffed up to be froat
Wid co’n er middlin’, fowl er shoat,
Des’ look out an’ you ‘ll see fu’ sho
A ‘possum faint befo’ yo’ do’.

De way t’ings happen, huhuh, chile,
Dis worl’ ’s done puzzled me one w’ile;
I ’s mighty skeered I ‘ll fall in doubt,
I des’ won’t try to reason out
De reason why folks strive an’ plan
A dinnah fu’ a full-fed man,
An’ shet de do’ an’ cross de street

nabij.
weleer.

Little Bird

Little Bird, where has your mother gone?
Why are you here all alone?
Little bird where is your nest?
Why are you so far from all the rest?
Allah knows the language you speak.
And Allah can lift you high.
Allah can bring you home again,
For Allah is stronger than I,
Allah is stronger than I.

Little Bird, I wish I could
Understand the words you speak.
I wish that you could spend the day with me,
We could sit and chat as you perch upon my knee.
Allah knows the language you speak.
And Allah can lift you high.
Allah can bring you home again,
For Allah is stronger than I,
Allah is stronger than I.

Little Bird, I’d love to take you home.
Little Bird, your eyes enchant me so.
Smiling moons in the dark night sky,
I wish that I could lift you up to fly
Allah knows the language you speak.
And Allah can lift you high.
Allah can bring you home again,
For Allah is stronger than I,
Allah is stronger than I.

I’ll tell you a secret my Little Bird,
Sometimes I feel alone just like you.
But we should always know, Allah is nearby,
To hear each word we pray and kiss each tear we cry.
Allah knows the language we speak
And Allah will lift us high
Allah will bring us home again
For Allah is stronger than you and I
Allah is stronger than I
Allah will bring us home again
For Allah is stronger than you and I
Allah is stronger than I.

Uit: The Devil To Pay In The Backlands (Vertaald door James L. Taylor en Harriet de Onís)

“But tell me, when it comes to being possessed of a devil, or helped by one, you too must have known of cases – men – women? Isn’t that so? As for me, I’ve seen so many that I learned to spot them: Rincha-Mãe, Sangue-d’outro, Muitos-Beiços, Rasga-em-Baixo, Faca-Fria, Fancho-Bode, a certain Treciziano, Azinhavre, Hermógenes – a whole herd of them. If I could only forget so many names… I’m not a horse wrangler. And besides, anyone who fools around with the notion of becoming a jagunço, as I did, is already opening the door to thedevil. Yes? No?
In my early days, I tried my hand at this and that, but as for thinking, I just didn’t. Didn’t have time. I was like a live fish on a griddle – when you’re hard-pressed you waste no time in day-dreams. But now, with time on my hands and no special worries, I can lie in my hammock and speculate. Does the devil exist, or doesn’t he? That’s what I’d like to know. I give up. Look: there is such a thing as a waterfall, isn’t there? Yes, but a waterfall is only a high bank water tumbling over the edge. Take away the water, or level the bank – what becomes of the waterfall? Living is a very dangerous business…
Let me try to explain: when the devil is inside a man, in his guts, the man is either evil or suffers bad luck.
But, on his own, a man as such has no devil in him. Not one! Do you agree? Tell me frankly – you’ll be doing me a great favor, and I ask it of you from my heart. This matter, however foolish it may seem, is important to me. I wish it wasn’t. But don’t tell me that a wise and learned person like you, sir, believes in the devil! You don’t? I thank you. Your opinion reassures me. I knew you felt that way – I expected you would – I give you credit for it. Ah! When a man is old he needs to rest easy.

Shapeshifter Poems

1
the legend is whispered
in the women’s tent
how the moon when she rises
full
follows some men into themselves
and changes them there
the season is short
but dreadful shapeshifters
they wear strange hands
they walk through the houses
at night their daughters
do not know them

2
who is there to protect her
from the hands of the father
not the windows which see and
say nothing not the moon
that awful eye not the woman
she will become with her
scarred tongue who who who the owl
laments into the evening who
will protect her this prettylittlegirl

Miss Rosie

when I watch you
wrapped up like garbage
sitting, surrounded by the smell
of too old potato peels
or
when I watch you
in your old man’s shoes
with the little toe cut out
sitting, waiting for your mind
like next week’s grocery
I say
when I watch you
you wet brown bag of a woman
who used to be the best looking gal in Georgia
used to be called the Georgia Rose
I stand up
through your destruction
I stand up

Wishes For Sons

i wish them cramps.
i wish them a strange town
and the last tampon.
I wish them no 7-11.

i wish them one week early
and wearing a white skirt.
i wish them one week late.

later i wish them hot flashes
and clots like you
wouldn’t believe. let the
flashes come when they
meet someone special.
let the clots come
when they want to.

let them think they have accepted
arrogance in the universe,
then bring them to gynecologists
not unlike themselves.

I Am Accused Of Tending To The Past

i am accused of tending to the past
as if i made it,
as if i sculpted it
with my own hands. i did not.
this past was waiting for me
when i came,
a monstrous unnamed baby,
and i with my mother’s itch
took it to breast
and named it
History.
she is more human now,
learning languages everyday,
remembering faces, names and dates.
when she is strong enough to travel
on her own, beware, she will.

Homage To My Hips

these hips are big hips.
they need space to
move around in.
they don’t fit into little
petty places. these hips
are free hips.
they don’t like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
i have known them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top

the lost baby poem

the time i dropped your almost body down
down to meet the waters under the city
and run one with the sewage to the sea
what did i know about waters rushing back
what did i know about drowning
or being drowned

you would have been born in winter
in the year of the disconnected gas
and no car
we would have made the thin walk
over the genecy hill into the canada winds
to let you slip into a stranger’s hands
if you were here i could tell you
these and some other things

and if i am ever less than a mountain
for your definite brothers and sisters
let the rivers wash over my head
let the sea take me for a spiller of seas
let black men call me stranger always
for your never named sake

won’t you celebrate with me

won’t you celebrate with me
what i have shaped into
a kind of life? i had no model.
born in babylon
both nonwhite and woman
what did i see to be except myself?
i made it up
here on this bridge between
starshine and clay,
my one hand holding tight
my one hand; come celebrate
with me that everyday
something has tried to kill me
and has failed.

good times

my daddy has paid the rent
and the insurance man is gone
and the lights is back on
and my uncle brud has hit
for one dollar straight
and they is good times
good times
good times

my mama has made bread
and grampaw has come
and everybody is drunk
and dancing in the kitchen
and singing in the kitchen
of these is good times
good times
good times

oh children think about the
good times

seeker of visions

what does this mean.
to see walking men
wrapped in the color of death,
to hear from their tongue
such difficult syllables?
are they the spirits
of our hope
or the pale ghosts of our future?
who will believe the red road
will not run on forever?
who will believe
a tribe of ice might live
and we might not?

Listen Children

listen children
keep this in the place
you have for keeping
always
keep it all ways

we have never hated black

listen
we have been ashamed
hopeless tired mad
but always
all ways
we loved us

we have always loved each other
children all ways

pass it on

Cutting Greens

curling them around
i hold their bodies in obscene embrace
thinking of everything but kinship.
collards and kale
strain against each strange other
away from my kissmaking hand and
the iron bedpot.
the pot is black.
the cutting board is black,
my hand,
and just for a minute
the greens roll black under the knife,
and the kitchen twists dark on its spine
and i taste in my natural appetite
the bond of live things everywhere.

My Mama Moved Among the Days

My Mama moved among the days

like a dreamwalker in a field;

seemed like what she touched was here

seemed like what touched her couldn’t hold,

she got us almost through the high grass

then seemed like she turned around and ran

right back in

right back on in.

There is a girl inside

There is a girl inside.

She is randy as a wolf.

She will not walk away and leave these bones

to an old woman.

She is a green tree in a forest of kindling.

She is a greeen girl in a used poet.

She has waited patient as a nun

for the second coming,

when she can break through gray hairs

into blossom

and her lovers will harvest

honey and thyme

and the woods will be wild

with the damn wonder of it.

adam thinking

she

stolen from my bone

is it any wonder

i hunger to tunnel back

inside desperate

to reconnect the rib and clay

and to be whole again

some need is in me

struggling to roar through my

mouth into a name

this creation is so fierce

i would rather have been born

climbing

a woman precedes me up the long rope.

her dangling braids the color of rain.

maybe i should have had braids.

maybe i should have kept the body i started,

slim and possible as a boy’s bone.

maybe i should have wanted less.

maybe i should have ignored the bowl in me

burning to be filled.

maybe i should have wanted less.

the woman passes the notch in the rope

marked Sixty. I rise toward it, struggling,

hand over hungry hand.

memory

ask me to tell how it feels

remembering your mother’s face

turned to water under the white words

of the man at the shoe store. ask me,

though she tells it better than i do,

not because of her charm

but because it never happened

she says,

no bully salesman swaggering,

no rage, no shame, none of it

ever happened.

i only remember buying you

your first grown up shoes

she smiles. ask me

how it feels.

mijn weg. Hoe klonk dit grapje in
de zwartste duisternis? En stond
inderdaad dit plompverloren huis zo zonder raam
in de leegte, zonder licht?
Ach, geweeklaag, het is alom ellende
en diepste droefenis en over de
akkers galmt een klagerig gejank, want
ik kom daar aan en daar
en daar mijn bloedend hart
bevuilt mijn broek.

Let Me In On Your Secrets

Women give me loose-leaf sheets
of poetry to read.
Their hearts are open for me to explore.
I walk quietly through the rows of words,
my eyes groping the private parts of their past.
I am not the one to prescribe penance or provide therapy,
for I too am a romantic, lonely soul
