The Morning Quatrains (Fragment)

Now doors and windows are unbarr’d,
Each-where are cheerful voices heard,
And round about ‘Good-morrows’ fly,
As if Day taught Humanity.
The chimnies now to smoke begin,
And the old wife sits down to spin,
Whilst Kate, taking her pail, does trip
Mull’s swoll’n and straddl’ing paps to strip.
Vulcan now makes his anvil ring,
Dick whistles loud, and Maud doth sing,
And Silvio with his bugle horn
Winds an Imprime unto the Morn.
Now through the morning doors behold
Phoebus array’d in burning gold,
Lashing his fiery steeds, displays
His warm and all-enlight’ning rays.
Now each one to his work prepares,
All that have hands are labourers,
And manufactures of each trade
By op’ning shops are open laid.
Hob yokes his oxen to the team,
The angler goes unto the stream,
The woodman to the purlews hies,
And lab’ring bees to load their thighs.
Fair Amarillis drives her flocks,
All night safe-folded from the fox,
To flow’ry downs, where Colin stays,
To court her with his roundelays.

He Makes The Eagles And Ocelots Dance With Him! (Fragment)

Thus the dead one was directed,
when he died:

‘Awaken, already the sky is rosy,
already dawn has come,
already sing the flame-coloured guans,
the fire-coloured swallows,
already the butterflies fly.’

Thus the old ones said
that who has died has become a god,
they said: ‘He has been made a god there,
meaning ‘He has died.’

Even jade is shattered,
Even gold is crushed,
Even quetzal plume are torn . . .
One does not live forever on this earth:
We endure only for an instant!

Will flowers be carried to the Kingdom of Death:
Is it true that we are going, we are going?
Where are we going, ay, where are we going?
Will we be dead there or will we live yet?
Does one exist again?

Matrimonium – Satire (Fragment)

Cher lecteur! Suis mes pas, entrons dans un ménage
Où, sous la cheminée, on bâcle un mariage;
Eh bien, soit. Tu connais Acaste, il a du bien,
Trois frères sans enfants, un nom qui vaut le mien;
Monsieur Georges, ami, me plairait davantage;
Il a trente ans au plus, barbe noire au visage;

School Run

I board the same bus I boarded this morning
and see the same driver from the earlier journey.
Our eyes meet; he remembers me too.
When I exit, I feel abandoned by the driver

I know from many early-morning journeys
to my daughter’s school in northwest London.
Why do I feel the driver has abandoned me?
Has an imagined intimacy developed?

At my daughter’s school in northwest London
were the usual mums and dads I greet
with an imagined sense of intimacy
that has nothing to do with friendship.

Among the many mums and dads I greeted
with politeness, or something like fondness
having nothing at all to do with friendship,
were business people and psychoanalysts.

Out of politeness or something like fondness,
I do not ask the driver why he left me.
He’s not in the business of psychoanalysis;
it’s not his job to say I miss my daughter,

that it was a loss when my daughter left
my body, when I met her eyes after the birth.
It’s not his place to say I’m losing my daughter.
I exit the same bus I boarded this morning.

Uit: In the Light of What We Know

“The greatest difference between us, however, the significance of which I did not begin to ascertain until two years after our first meeting, lay in our social classes. As I mentioned, my father was an academic at Oxford, and my mother, after seeing off her only child to university, had returned to practising as a psychotherapist, throwing herself into the retraining necessary to make up ground lost while raising me. My maternal grandfather had been Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States and had moved in that country’s elite internationalist circles; his closest friend had been Muhammad Asad, Pakistani ambassador to the UN shortly after 1947, a man who had begun life as Leopold Weiss, an Austro-Hungarian Jew born in what is now Ukraine. On the paternal side, my grandfather was an industrialist whose fortune, based on landholdings and tenancies, he augmented with the profits of shipping enterprises.
More than once during term time, Zafar came with me to lunch at my parents’ home, a large double-fronted, three-storey Victorian house like many in that part of Oxford, though somewhat more capacious than the homes of most academics. To this day, whenever I return there, I feel an ease and lightness suffuse my being as I tread across the sweeping arc of the driveway, the gravel crunching underfoot, up to the stained glass of the wide front door.
On his first visit, Zafar stood at the threshold, wiping his feet over and over, his eyes darting about the large hall, his mouth slightly open. Evidently, he was, as people often are, astonished by the books, which were everywhere: shelves hanging wherever a wall would allow, books overflowing onto the floors, even leaning accordion-like on the staircase along the wall. In the family room, old issues of science magazines and journals, my father’s subscriptions, sat in box files on shelves that scored the walls like lines on a writing pad. More recent issues lay about in small piles on a sideboard and on the floor. Zafar surveyed all this but his eyes settled on the far wall that was covered with my father’s collection of old maps, mounted and framed, of the Indian subcontinent under the British Raj, an area that today stretches from Pakistan across India to Bangladesh.”

Götterdämmerung (Fragment)

Von kühnen Wunderbildern
Ein großer Trümmerhauf,
In reizendem Verwildern
Ein blühnder Garten drauf;

Versunknes Reich zu Füßen,
Vom Himmel fern und nah,
Aus anderm Reich ein Grüßen –
Das ist Italia!

Wenn Frühlingslüfte wehen
Hold übern grünen Plan,
Ein leises Auferstehen
Hebt in den Tälern an.

Da will sichs unten rühren
Im stillen Göttergrab,
Der Mensch kanns schauernd spüren
Tief in die Brust hinab.

Verwirrend in den Bäumen
Gehn Stimmen hin und her,
Ein sehnsuchtsvolles Träumen
Weht übers blaue Meer.

Und unterm duftgen Schleier,
Sooft der Lenz erwacht,
Webt in geheimer Feier
Die alte Zaubermacht.

Die Freiheit, die ich nicht meine

Die Freiheit, die möcht’ ich echt haben,
drum möcht’ ich sie früher befrein
von solchen, die zwar recht haben,
doch ohne berechtigt zu sein.
Denn die, deren die sich erfrecht haben,
ist die Freiheit nicht, die ich mein’!

Zwei Dichternamen

Wenn Männer erzählend die Zeit uns begleiten,
indem sie deren Probleme verwässern,
so gehören sie bestenfalls zu den bessern,
die da liefern weibliche Handarbeiten.
Zwei, nicht zu verwechseln, sollt ihr unterscheiden:
was die Namen trennt, das vereint die Gestalten;
der Unterschied ist in beiden enthalten,
und was gemeinsam in keinem von beiden.

Das Hiesige

Du rufst es an, schon ist es fort;
verloren die Tat, verloren das Wort.
Es ist da und dort, und wo immer es sei,
ist es immer dabei und nie dabei.
Es ist ein Ding, und du greifst Luft;

Influence

In a most tough, unfitting and hard moment
of life;
If I burn in the fire of longing and sorrow:
I read in quick pace a nice chapter of the
Koran,
All pains are taken by a spiritual hand from
the soul.
And all doubts fly away from the heart and I
start to cry:
With sacred tears I string perls on my
cheeks;
Mt soul becomes purified totally, I read faith
and become a believer;
The ease of comfort descends: I am released
from heavy burden;
Oh God! The things you forbid are utterly
rejectful and defective, I say.
I prostrate myself and say “God is the Truth!

The Morning Quatrains (Fragment)

The cock has crow’d an hour ago,
‘Tis time we now dull sleep forego;
Tir’d Nature is by sleep redress’d,
And Labour’s overcome by rest.
We have out-done the work of Night,
‘Tis time we rise t’attend the Light,
And e’er he shall his beams display,
To plot new bus’ness for the Day.
None but the slothful, or unsound,
Are by the Sun in feathers found,
Nor, without rising with the Sun,
Can the world’s bus’ness e’er be done.
Hark! Hark! the watchful Chanticler
Tells us the Day’s bright harbinger
Peeps o’er the eastern hills, to awe
And warm night’s sov’reign to withdraw.
The morning curtains now are drawn,
And now appears the blushing dawn;
Aurora has her roses shed,
To strew the way Sol’s steeds must tread.
Xanthus and Aethon harness’d are,
To roll away the burning car,
And, snorting flame, impatient bear
The dressing of the charioteer.
The sable cheeks of sullen Night
Are streak’d with rosy streams of light,
Whilst she retires away in fear,
To shade the other hemisphere.
The merry lark now takes her wings,
And long’d-for Day’s loud welcome sings,
Mounting her body out of sight,
As if she meant to meet the Light.

He Makes The Eagles And Ocelots Dance With Him! (Fragment)

He makes the Eagles and Ocelots dance with him!
Come to see the Huexotzinca:

On the dais of the Eagle he shouts out,
Loudly cries the Mexica.

The battlefield is the place: where one toasts the divine liquor in war,
where are stained red the divine eagles,
where the tigers howl,
where all kinds of precious stones rain from ornaments,
where wave headdresses rich with fine plumes,
where princes are smashed to bits.

There is nothing like death in war,
nothing like the flowery death
so precious to Him who gives life:
far off I see it: my heart yearns for it!

And they called it Teotihulcan
because it was the place
where the lords were buried.
Thus they said:

‘When we die,
truly we die not,
because we will live, we will rise,
we will continue living, we will awaken
This will make us happy.’

La curée (Fragment)

VI
Et sous le soleil qui le mord ;
Ses larges crocs pour le festin ;
Roulent de vallons en vallons ;
Car chacun en veut un morceau ;

„Was soll ich tun?
…Großartig von mir, was?

“Reading these two novels only reinforced the opinion he’d already formed of Archimboldi. In 1983, at the age of twenty-two, he undertook the task of translating D’Arsonval. No one asked him to do it. At the time, there was no French publishing house interested in publishing the German author with the funny name. Essentially Pelletier set out to translate the book because he liked it, and because he enjoyed the work, although it also occurred to him that he could submit the translation, prefaced with a study of the Archimboldian oeuvre, as his thesis, and — why not? — as the foundation of his future dissertation.
He completed the final draft of the translation in 1984, and a Paris publishing house, after some inconclusive and contradictory readings, accepted it and published Archimboldi. Though the novel seemed destined from the start not to sell more than a thousand copies, the first printing of three thousand was exhausted after a couple of contradictory, positive, even effusive reviews, opening the door for second, third, and fourth printings.
By then Pelletier had read fifteen books by the German writer, translated two others, and was regarded almost universally as the preeminent authority on Benno von Archimboldi across the length and breadth of France.
Then Pelletier could think back on the day when he first read Archimboldi, and he saw himself, young and poor, living in a chambre de bonne, sharing the sink where he washed his face and brushed his teeth with fifteen other people who lived in the same dark garret, shitting in a horrible and notably unhygienic bathroom that was more like a latrine or cesspit, also shared with the fifteen residents of the garret, some of whom had already returned to the provinces, their respective university degrees in hand, or had moved to slightly more comfortable places in Paris itself, or were still there — just a few of them — vegetating or slowly dying of revulsion.”

Uit:The Savage Detectives

« Asking Álamo these questions was, as I soon learned, a sign of my tactlessness. At first I thought he was smiling in admiration. Later I realized it was actually contempt. Mexican poets (poets in general, I guess) hate to have their ignorance brought to light. But I didn’t back down, and after he had ripped apart a few of my poems at the second session, I asked him whether he knew what a rispetto was. Álamo thought that I was demanding respect for my poems, and he went off on a tirade about objective criticism (for a change), a minefield that every young poet must cross, etc., but I cut him off, and after explaining that never in my short life had I demanded respect for my humble creations, I put the question to him again, this time enunciating as clearly as possible.
“Don’t give me this crap,” said Álamo.
“A rispetto, professor, is a kind of lyrical verse, romantic to be precise, similar to the strambotto, with six or eight hendecasyllabic lines, the first four in the form of a serventesio and the following composed in rhyming couplets. For example …” And I was about to give him an example or two when Álamo jumped up and cut me off. What happened next is hazy (although I have a good memory): I remember Álamo laughing along with the four or five other members of the workshop. I think they may have been making fun of me.
Anyone else would have left and never gone back, but despite my unhappy memories (or my unhappy failure to remember what had happened, at least as unfortunate as remembering would have been), the next week there I was, punctual as always.
I think destiny brought me back. This was the fifth session of Álamo’s workshop that I’d attended (but it might just as well have been the eighth or the ninth, since lately I’ve been noticing that time can expand or contract at will), and tension, the alternating current of tragedy, was palpable in the air, although no one could explain why.”

GODZILLA IN MEXICO

Listen carefully, my son: bombs were falling
over Mexico City
but no one even noticed.
The air carried poison through
the streets and open windows.
You’d just finished eating and were watching
cartoons on TV.
I was reading in the bedroom next door
when I realized we were going to die.
Despite the dizziness and nausea I dragged myself
to the kitchen and found you on the floor.
We hugged. You asked what was happening
and I didn’t tell you we were on death’s program
but instead that we were going on a journey,
one more, together, and that you shouldn’t be afraid.
When it left, death didn’t even
close our eyes.
What are we? you asked a week or year later,
ants, bees, wrong numbers
in the big rotten soup of chance?
We’re human beings, my son, almost birds,
public heroes and secrets.

Ernesto Cardenal and I

I was out walking, sweaty and with hair plastered

to my face

when I saw Ernesto Cardenal approaching

from the opposite direction

and by way of greeting I said:

Father, in the Kingdom of Heaven

that is communism,

is there a place for homosexuals?

Yes, he said.

And for impenitent masturbators?

For sex slaves?

For sex fools?

For sadomasochists, for whores, for those obsessed

with enemas,

for those who can’t take it anymore, those who really truly

can’t take it anymore?

And Cardenal said yes.

And I raised my eyes

and the clouds looked like

the pale pink smiles of cats

and the trees cross-stitched on the hill

(the hill we’ve got to climb)

shook their branches.

Savage trees, as if saying

some day, sooner rather than later, you’ll have to come

into my rubbery arms, into my scraggly arms,

into my cold arms. A botanical frigidity

that’ll stand your hair on end.

“The first time that Jean-Claude Pelletier read Benno von Archimboldi was Christmas 1980, in Paris, when he was nineteen years old and studying German literature. The book in question was D’Arsonval. The young Pelletier didn’t realize at the time that the novel was part of a trilogy (made up of the English-themed The Garden and the Polish-themed The Leather Mask, together with the clearly French-themed D’Arsonval), but this ignorance or lapse or bibliographical lacuna, attributable only to his extreme youth, did nothing to diminish the wonder and admiration that the novel stirred in him.

From that day on (or from the early morning hours when he concluded his maiden reading) he became an enthusiastic Archimboldian and set out on a quest to find more works by the author. This was no easy task. Getting hold of books by Benno von Archimboldi in the 1980s, even in Paris, was an effort not lacking in all kinds of difficulties. Almost no reference to Archimboldi could be found in the university’s German department. Pelletier’s professors had never heard of him. One said he thought he recognized the name. Ten minutes later, to Pelletier’s outrage (and horror), he realized that the person his professor had in mind was the Italian painter, regarding whom he soon revealed himself to be equally ignorant.

Pelletier wrote to the Hamburg publishing house that had published D’Arsonval and received no response. He also scoured the few German bookstores he could find in Paris. The name Archimboldi appeared in a dictionary of German literature and in a Belgian magazine devoted — whether as a joke or seriously, he never knew — to the literature of Prussia. In 1981, he made a trip to Bavaria with three friends from the German department, and there, in a little bookstore in Munich, on Voralmstrasse, he found two other books: the slim volume titled Mitzi’s Treasure, less than one hundred pages long, and the aforementioned English novel, The Garden.”

Mindful of John Wesley’s strictures on the use of many words in buying and selling, Simon made a pile practicing medicine, but
in this pursuit he was unhappy lest he be tempted into doing what he knew was not for the glory of God, as the putting on of gold and costly apparel. So Simon, having forgotten his teacher’s dictum on the possession of human chattels, bought three slaves and with their aid established a homestead on the banks of the Alabama River some forty miles above Saint Stephens. He returned to Saint Stephens only once, to find a wife, and with her established a line that ran high to daughters. Simon lived to an impressive age and died rich.

It was customary for the men in the family to remain on Simon’s homestead, Finch’s Landing, and make their living from cotton. The place was self-sufficient: modest in comparison with the empires around it, the Landing nevertheless produced everything required to sustain life except ice, wheat flour, and articles of clothing, supplied by river-boats from Mobile.

Simon would have regarded with impotent fury the disturbance between the North and the South, as it left his descendants stripped of everything but their land, yet the tradition of living on the land remained unbroken until well into the twentieth century, when my father, Atticus Finch, went to Montgomery to read law, and his younger brother went to Boston to study medicine. Their sister Alexandra was the Finch who remained at the Landing: she married a taciturn man who spent most of his time lying in a hammock by the river wondering if his trot-lines were full.“

Flieder

Man hatte mich darum gebracht.

Sehnsucht

Es war einmal.

Ich leb’ am Tage vom Gedanken,

nachts von der Qual;

Our drums are ready; already I inspire the eagles and jaguars to

dance. Already you are on your feet, song flower. I search for

songs, our adornments. Ayyo.

Toward the end of it all I, Nezahualcoyotl, go weeping. Why must I

go lose myself in the land of the dead? Already I leave you, by

whom all live, you command me to lose myself in the land of the

dead. Ayyo.

How will things continue on Earth, in Acolhuacan? In time will

you disperse all your dependents, spirit of all I leave behind?

Only songs are our adornments. Already He destroys our painted

books, the princes. Be joyful here, no one has his house on earth;

we must leave the fragrant flowers. Ayyo.

Drums: Quititi quititi quiti quiti tocoto tocoti tocototocoti. Just

thus it will come back in.

Let there be flower songs. Let my younger brothers sing. I drink

intoxicating flowers; already they have arrived, the flowers that

make us dizzy, they come to glorify. Ayyo.

Let there be flowers. Bouquets of flowers have already arrived here;

flowers of pleasure are scattered, many-colored flowers rain

entwined. The drum resounds: let the dance begin. Ayyo.

La curée

I

Sifflait et pleuvait par les airs ;

Tant d’uniformes à la fois ;

Qui chargeaient les mousquets et renvoyaient la foudre ;

Ma mère me chantait des berceuses

Et grand-maman me racontait des histoires

À travers l’obscurité pour me fermer les yeux

Ô, ma langue! Tu as toujours été

The Noon Quatrains

THE Day grows hot, and darts his rays

From such a sure and killing place,

That half this World are fain to fly

The danger of his burning eye.

His early glories were benign,

Warm to be felt, bright to be seen,

And all was comfort, but who can

Endure him when Meridian?

Of him we as of kings complain,

Who mildly do begin to reign,

But to the Zenith got of pow’r,

Those whom they should protect devour.

Has not another Phaeton

Mounted the chariot of the Sun,

And, wanting art to guide his horse,

Is hurri’d from the Sun’s due course.

If this hold on, our fertile lands

Will soon be turn’d to parched sands,

And not an onion that will grow

Without a Nile to overflow.

The grazing herds now droop and pant,

E’en without labour fit to faint,

And willingly forsook their meat

To seek out cover from the heat.

The lagging ox is no unbound,

From larding

the new turn’d up ground, [pressing down]

Whilst Hobbinal alike o’er-laid

Takes his coarse dinner to the shade.

Cellars and grottos now are best

To eat and drink in, or to rest,

And not a soul above is found

Can find a refuge under ground.

When pagan tyranny grew hot,

Thus persecuted Christians got

Into the dark but friendly womb

Of unknown subterranean Rome

. [the Roman catacombs]

And as that heat did cool at last,

So a few scorching hours o’er-pass’d,

In a more mild and temp’rate ray

We may again enjoy the Day.

“I’m not really sure what visceral realism is. I’m seventeen years old, my name is Juan García Madero, and I’m in my first semester of law school. I wanted to study literature, not law, but my uncle insisted, and in the end I gave in. I’m an orphan, and someday I’ll be a lawyer. That’s what I told my aunt and uncle, and then I shut myself in my room and cried all night. Or anyway for a long time. Then, as if it were settled, I started class in the law school’s hallowed halls, but a month later I registered for Julio César Álamo’s poetry workshop in the literature department, and that was how I met the visceral realists, or viscerealists or even vicerealists, as they sometimes like to call themselves. Up until then, I had attended the workshop four times and nothing ever happened, though only in a manner of speaking, of course, since naturally something always happened: we read poems, and Álamo praised them or tore them to pieces, depending on his mood; one person would read, Álamo would critique, another person would read, Álamo would critique, somebody else would read, Álamo would critique. Sometimes Álamo would get bored and ask us (those of us who weren’t reading just then) to critique too, and then we would critique and Álamo would read the paper.

It was the ideal method for ensuring that no one was friends with anyone, or else that our friendships were unhealthy and based on resentment.

And I can’t say that Álamo was much of a critic either, even though he talked a lot about criticism. Really I think he just talked for the sake of talking. He knew what periphrasis was. Not very well, but he knew. But he didn’t know what pentapody was (a line of five feet in classical meter, as everybody knows), and he didn’t know what a nicharchean was either (a line something like the phalaecean), or what a tetrastich was (a four-line stanza). How do I know he didn’t know? Because on the first day of the workshop, I made the mistake of asking. I have no idea what I was thinking. The only Mexican poet who knows things like that by heart is Octavio Paz (our great enemy), the others are clueless, or at least that was what Ulises Lima told me minutes after I joined the visceral realists and they embraced me as one of their own.”

 Uit: To Kill a Mockingbird

“When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow. When it healed, and Jem’s fears of never being able to play football were assuaged, he was seldom self-conscious about his injury. His left arm was somewhat shorter than his right; when he stood or walked, the back of his hand was at right angles to his body, his thumb parallel to his thigh. He couldn’t have cared less, so long as he could pass and punt.

When enough years had gone by to enable us to look back on them, we sometimes discussed the events leading to his accident. I maintain that the Ewells started it all, but Jem, who was four years my senior, said it started long before that. He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out.

I said if he wanted to take a broad view of the thing, it really began with Andrew Jackson. If General Jackson hadn’t run the Creeks up the creek, Simon Finch would never have paddled up the Alabama, and where would we be if he hadn’t? We were far too old to settle an argument with a fist-fight, so we consulted Atticus. Our father said we were both right.

Being Southerners, it was a source of shame to some members of the family that we had no recorded ancestors on either side of the Battle of Hastings. All we had was Simon Finch, a fur-trapping apothecary from Cornwall whose piety was exceeded only by his stinginess. In England, Simon was irritated by the persecution of those who called themselves Methodists at the hands of their more liberal brethren, and as Simon called himself a Methodist, he worked his way across the Atlantic to Philadelphia, thence to Jamaica, thence to Mobile, and up the Saint Stephens.”

unserem Ende entgegenzukommen.

Das arme Leben

Tust du nicht unrecht diesen Freuden?

Verbergen sie nicht Gram und Qual?

Verzittert nicht das tiefste Leiden

in einem Tränenbach-Kanal?

Hat doch der Glaube sie zum Narren,

daß jeder Schritt ins Freie drängt,

wenn sie in diese Enge starren,

die sich nur immer mehr verengt.

Bange macht jedem jede Stunde,

die von ihm abnimmt Stück für Stück,

und jeder zieht mit einer Wunde

in sein Verhängnis sich zurück.

Wer fühlt das Leben nicht vertropfen

und wie es in den Tod verfällt!

Sie hören ihre Herzen klopfen,

und eben darum lärmt die Welt.

Jeglicher Blick verkürzt das Dauern

von der bemessnen Wartezeit,

und jeder Atemzug ist Schauern,

und jeder Gang ein Grabgeleit.

Wenn sie verrucht den andern nahmen

den zugeteilten Henkerschmaus,

es hat zum vorbestimmten Amen

der vollste Magen nichts voraus.

Heben vergebens ihre Hände,

eh sie vereint das letzte Band.

Sie reichen alle doch am Ende

einander ihre Totenhand.

I, the singer, plumes of narcotic flowers tint my heart; already I

scatter flowers, they are quickly taken. Enjoy. Within my heart the

song flowers burst, already I scatter flowers. Ayyo.

With songs I must deck m+yself, with flowers my heart must be

For this I cry sometimes and say: The fame of my flowers, the renown

Drums: Tico toco tocoto. At the end: ticoto ticoto.

As a parrot, as a quechol bird, I fly above the earth, my heart

   drunk. Ahuayyai.

I am a quetzal, I arrive in the One Spirit’s place of rain,

beautifully over the flowers; singing, my heart fills with joy.

   Ahuayyai.

Flowers flood the earth: my heart is drunk. Ahuayyai.

I cry and grieve, for no one has a home on earth. Ahuayyai.

I, a Mexica, say, let me have pleasure as I march to Tecuantepec:

I go to destroy the Chiltepecans, so the Tecuantepecans may weep.

If only these warriors of mine, these Mexicas, were not so warlike!

   They destroy! Ahuayyai.

quand le plomb battait les carreaux ;

The Shuraleh (Fragment)

(A mythical horned demon,
which inhabits the forests of Qazan.)

Past Qazan into the country
There’s a village called Qirlay.
In that village even hens cluck.
God alone could tell you why.

Even though I was not born there,
For a while it was my home.
There in spring I tilled and harrowed,
In the autumn reaped the loam.

I recall in all directions
Lay the backwood’s broad delight.
Grasslands there of glossy velvet
Dazzled everybody’s sight.

And is the village large? О no!
It’s just a hamlet in a ring.
All its daily drinking water
Comes from one, lone tiny spring.

” Volunteered,” Rawlings sniffed. ” You, you, and you.”

” I don’t want them,” I said.

” Gracious, ain’t he?” Rawlings asked of no one in particular. ” You might at least have said thanks, Doc.”

” You are putting the lives of your men in danger, Commander Swanson. You know what your orders said….

” What do your men think of your making them risk their lives to save the good name of the submarine service?”

” You heard the captain,” Rawlings said. ” We’re volunteers. Look at Zabrinski there, anyone can see that he is a man cast in a heroic mould.”

” Have you thought of what happens,” I said, ” if the ice closes in when we’re away and the captain has to take the ship down.”

To Coelia

WHEN, Coelia, must my old day set,
And my young morning rise
In beams of joy so bright as yet
Ne’er bless’d a lover’s eyes?
My state is more advanced than when
I first attempted thee:
I sued to be a servant then,
But now to be made free.

I’ve served my time faithful and true,
Expecting to be placed
In happy freedom, as my due,
To all the joys thou hast:
Ill husbandry in love is such
A scandal to love’s power,
We ought not to misspend so much
As one poor short-lived hour.

Yet think not, sweet! I’m weary grown,
That I pretend such haste;
Since none to surfeit e’er was known
Before he had a taste:
My infant love could humbly wait
When, young, it scarce knew how
To plead; but grown to man’s estate,
He is impatient now.

SONG OF THE FLIGHT

In vain I was born. Ayahue.

In vain I left the house of god and came to earth. I am so wretched! Ohuaya, Ohuaya!

I wish I’d never been born, truly that I’d never come to earth. That’s what I say. But what is there to do? Do I have to live among the people? What then? Princes, tell me! Aya. Ohuaya, Ohuaya!

Do I have to stand on earth? What is my destiny? My heart suffers. I am unfortunate. You were hardly my friend here on earth, Life Giver. Ohuaya, Ohuaya!

How to live among the people? Does He who sustains and lifts men have no discretion? Go, friends, live in peace, pass your life in calm! While I have to live stooped, with my head bent down when I am among the people. Ohuaya, Ohuaya!

For this I cry – Yeehuya!- feeling desolate, abandoned among men on the earth. How do you decide your heart – Yeehuya! – Life Giver? Already your anger is vanishing, your compassion welling! Aya! I am at your side, God. Do you plan my death? Ohuaya, Ohuaya!

Is it true we take pleasure, we who live on earth? Is it certain that we live to enjoy ourselves on earth? But we are all so filled with grief. Are bitterness and anguish the destiny of the people of earth? Ohuaya, Ohuaya!

But do not anguish, my heart! Recall nothing now. In truth it hardly gains compassion on this earth. Truly you have come to increase bitterness at your side, next to you, Oh Life Giver. Yyao yyahue auhuayye oo huiya.

I only look for, I remember my friends. Perhaps they will come one more time, perhaps they will return to life? Or only once do we perish, only one time here on earth? If only our hearts did not suffer! next to, at your side, Life Giver. Yyao yyahue auhuayye oo huiya.

In diesem Land

Nichts macht in diesem Lande ehrlos.

In diesem Land münzt jede Schlechtigkeit,

In diesem Land triffst du in leer Luft,
willst treffen du die ausgefeimte Bande,
und es begrinst gemütlich jeder Schuft
als Landsmann dich in diesem Lande.

Vergleichende Erotik

dein
Auge blickt, der Ewigkeiten froh.

Und Freudenfeuer brannten lichterloh,
als ich aus jenes Zweikampfs Kräftemessen
in deine unbesiegte Ohnmacht floh,

Toutes avaient au front une trace luisante ;
Trouva sur le fauteuil romain ;
Chantant la belle liberté ;
Des vents et des flots écumeux ;
Devant le peuple souverain ;
Que des porteurs divins de blessures infimes,
Des sages couronnés d’affront,
Des orateurs sacrés, des poètes sublimes,
Tombés en se touchant le front ;

Uit: Oh My Mother Tongue!

Oh, beloved native language

Oh, enchanting mother tongue!

You enabled my search for knowledge

Of the world, since I was young

As a child, when I was sleepless

Mother sung me lullabies

And my grandma told me stories

Through the night, to shut my eyes

Oh, my tongue! You have been always

My support in grief and joy

Understood and cherished fondly

Since I was a little boy

In my tongue, I learned with patience

To express my faith and say:

“Oh, Creator! Bless my parents

Take, Allah, my sins away!”

Uit: Fear Is the Key

“Gangsters and hoodlums are notoriously the world’s worst marksmen, their usual method being to come within a couple of yards before firing or spraying the landscape with a sufficient hail of bullets to make the law of averages work for them and I had heard a hundred times that those boys couldn’t hit a barn door at ten paces. But maybe Larry had never heard of this, or maybe the rule applied only to barn doors.”
