‘We zien elkaar’, zegt de man.

“Illusions about the civilizing function of a bloody Empire and the rancid rhetoric of Washington Consensus politicians were being destroyed on the battlefields of Iraq and in the mountains of Afghanistan and subsequently in Lebanon.  The glimmer of an actual political alternative, however, was only visible in Latin America.  There, new social movements had thrown up new political leaders.  They were insisting that, despite the fall of the Soviet Union, the world was still confronted with old choices.  Either a revamped global capitalism with new wars and new impoverishment, chaos, anarchy or a rethought and revived socialism, democratic in character and capable of serving the needs of the poor.

These leaders were determined to rescue the stranded ship ‘utopia’, to initiate more egalitarian, redistributive policies and to involve the poor in the political life of their countries.  For proclaiming these modest goals they were traduced and vilified.  Their real crime is to challenge the certainties of the New Order, to disregard the ‘Forbidden’ signs of the Washington Consensus.

An ally of that consensus can crush its opponents, torture and kill political prisoners, ban all rival parties, sell half a country’s assests for private gain and still obtain the ‘international community’s’ seal of approval.  But if a government challenges the priorities of the global system in the name of
an invigorated democracy and a ultra-democratic constitution [Venezuela] and, worst of all, continues to be re-elected by its stubborn citizenry it will be vilified and attacked.”

Uit: A bras le coeur

– Tu bouges encore, je te pique ! me lance ma mère.

At the Grave of Ezra Pound

It’s nothing special. A granite marker
set in the manicured grass, a few
flowers. The waterbus was crowded—
tourists, mostly, though few spoke
English. February wind blew
the chilly spume like spikes, a chill
that lasted under lowering skies
like the dark swirls in the glass
blown on Murano. I’d like to say
that thoughts of the great Modernist
revolution pummeled across my mind.
I’d like to say that the complex
torment of politics and art replayed
itself while I knelt to contemplate
the weathered letters, “EZRA POVND,”
but how long can you look at a chunk
of stone embedded in the earth?

Dark

It is better to go to the house of mourning
than to go to the house of feasting.
—Ecclesiastes 7:2

Nights grow longer, on the drive home, the window
cranked open, the air seems dark, freighted with winter’s
impending weight, but leaves rustle their October songs
and mist curls in ropes across asphalt. Deer cross
the road, grey blurs looming in the headlights too late
almost to avoid hitting them. On the side of the road
I see one lying, pull over and walk back. She’s alive,
barely, just over the ditch and only a few yards
short of where the woods begin. So close, almost
there, a second, a simple second, one way or the other
she would’ve made it, woods, freedom, the chance
to browse more leaves, whatever—I’m lost in the deer’s
life as I can only imagine it—her forelegs kick
desperately, weakly among the grass and weeds, her neck
arched, eyes glowing fear, but she’s completely
broken, dead except for her beating heart and crackling
brain, under the cold roof of stars, among the wisps
of ground fog, her sides still heaving, I go back
to the car and get the tire iron from the trunk and I
do what, in praise, in glory, in all abiding, has to be done.

BOLIVÁR   (Fragment)

A Greek Poem

THEY SAW AN APPARITION OF THESEUS IN ARMS, RUSHING
ON AT THE HEAD OF THEM AGAINST THE BARBARIANS

Le cuer d’ un home vaut tout l’ or d’ un pais

For the great, the free, the brave, the strong,
The fitting words are great and free and brave and strong,
For them, the total subjection of every element, silence, for
them tears, for them beacons, and olive branches, and
the lanterns
That bob up and down with the swaying of the ships and scrawl
on the harbours’ dark horizons,
For them are the empty barrels piled up in the narrowest lane,
again of the harbor,
For them the coils of white rope, the chains, the anchors, the
other manometers,
Amidst the irritating smell of petroleum,
That they might fit out a ship, put to sea and depart,
Like a tram setting off, empty and ablaze with light, in the
nocturnal serenity of the gardens,
With one purpose behind the voyage: ad astra.

For them I’ll speak fine words, dictated to me by Inspiration’s
Muse,
As she nestled deep in my mind full of emotion
For the figures, austere and magnificent, of Odysseus
Androutsos and Simon Bolivar.

But for now I’ll sing only of Simon, leaving the other for an
appropriate time,
Leaving him that I might dedicate, when the time comes,
perhaps the finest song that I’ve ever sung,
Perhaps the finest song that’s ever been sung in the whole
world.
And this not for what they both were for their countries, their
nations, their people, and other such like that fail to
inspire,
But because they remained throughout the ages, both of them,
alone always, and free, great, brave and strong.

Advent

We have tested and tasted too much, lover-

Through a chink too wide there comes in no wonder.

But here in the Advent-darkened room

Where the dry black bread and the sugarless tea

Of penance will charm back the luxury

Of a child’s soul, we’ll return to Doom

The knowledge we stole but could not use.

And the newness that was in every stale thing

When we looked at it as children: the spirit-shocking

Wonder in a black slanting Ulster hill

Or the prophetic astonishment in the tedious talking

Of an old fool will awake for us and bring

You and me to the yard gate to watch

the whins

And the bog-holes, cart-tracks, old stables where Time begins.

O after Christmas we’ll have no need to go searching

For the difference that sets an old phrase burning-

We’ll hear it in the whispered argument of a churning

Or in the streets where the village boys are lurching.

And we’ll hear it among decent men too

Who barrow dung in gardens under trees,

Wherever life pours ordinary plenty.

Won’t we be rich, my love and I, and

God we shall not ask for reason’s payment,

The why of heart-breaking strangeness in dreeping hedges

Nor analyse God’s breath in common statement.

We have thrown into the dust-bin the clay-minted wages

Of pleasure, knowledge and the conscious hour-

And Christ comes with a January flower.

L’Occident

Comme un navire en feu qui sombre à l’horizon ;

Tout sur le ciel et l’eau s’effaçait à la fois ;

The Pains of Sleep

Ere on my bed my limbs I lay,

It hath not been my use to pray

With moving lips or bended knees ;

But silently, by slow degrees,

My spirit I to Love compose,

In humble trust mine eye-lids close,

With reverential resignation,

No wish conceived, no thought exprest,

Only a sense of supplication ;

A sense o’er all my soul imprest

That I am weak, yet not unblest,

Since in me, round me, every where

Eternal Strength and Wisdom are.

But yester-night I prayed aloud

In anguish and in agony,

Up-starting from the fiendish crowd

Of shapes and thoughts that tortured me :

A lurid light, a trampling throng,

Sense of intolerable wrong,

And whom I scorned, those only strong !

Thirst of revenge, the powerless will

Still baffled, and yet burning still !

Desire with loathing strangely mixed

On wild or hateful objects fixed.

Fantastic passions ! maddening brawl !

And shame and terror over all !

Deeds to be hid which were not hid,

Which all confused I could not know

Whether I suffered, or I did :

For all seemed guilt, remorse or woe,

My own or others still the same

Life-stifling fear, soul-stifling shame.

So two nights passed : the night’s dismay

Saddened and stunned the coming day.

Sleep, the wide blessing, seemed to me

Distemper’s worst calamity.

The third night, when my own loud scream

Had waked me from the fiendish dream,

O’ercome with sufferings strange and wild,

I wept as I had been a child ;

And having thus by tears subdued

My anguish to a milder mood,

Such punishments, I said, were due

To natures deepliest stained with sin,–

For aye entempesting anew

The unfathomable hell within,

The horror of their deeds to view,

To know and loathe, yet wish and do !

Such griefs with such men well agree,

But wherefore, wherefore fall on me ?

To be beloved is all I need,

And whom I love, I love indeed.
