UIt: Acre (Vertaald door Adam Cullen)

“I realized I was very far from home on the very first morning there, in a suburb of Toronto, when I woke up (which had happened several times already because my internal clock read midday) and heard the birds singing outside. Why they should sing in August, I didn’t know, but they were. The birdsong was familiar and yet, it was entirely foreign. As if familiar birds weren’t singing right. As if they’d suffered some kind of a stroke and had forgotten how to sing. Or had studied under the wrong masters. Or had studied under some kind of bizarre masters—the type who want to do everything differently, to pursue something new. Modernists of some sort. For the birds were singing backwards—that was the first word that came to mind when I heard them. I’ve grown a little used to it by now. It no longer shocks me, and neither do they really sing much anymore. Now, it’s mainly the chittering of red squirrels coming from the forest. At first, I couldn’t even figure out whether it was a bird or a beast making the noise. These American red squirrels are chipper little animals. The first time I saw them scurrying after one another, I thought they were babies. Mini-squirrels. Then, there are the darling tiny chipmunks that are like stuffed animals forgotten in the woods and come to life. Riina mentioned that she’s spotted a flying squirrel a few times here, too (which the expatriate Estonians curiously call lendavad oravad instead of simply lendoravad), and even fed it from the palm of her hand. Riina spent her childhood summers here by the lakes but now lives far away in Tallinn. Tallinn lies at an immeasurable distance from this place, at any rate. In another world.
The one bird in Canada’s forests (leaving waterbirds aside) that is the same from here to Iceland—and even to England, Hiiumaa, Moscow, and Irkutsk—is the raven. A pan-boreal species. Its cries echo across the belt of northern forests and tundra circling the entire globe. To the Indians, at least to a few (those in the forest, of course), it was a mythical bird, creator of the world.
Yet on the whole, America is wrong. You feel it here with every step and all the time. I’m amazed that visitors to America never mention it. They talk as if what’s here is almost something ordinary, even something European. But it’s not. Not in the very least. Of course, you do encounter European-style people who speak nearly the same language, and the British Queen is the country’s formal ruler. The Bible is read in churches and Shakespeare is played in theaters. But it’s all false. Just as false and misplaced as expatriate Estonian folk dance and the way they recite the poems of Juhan Liiv. Sincere, absolutely sincere, sincere and cute, but inevitably false. Out of place. America as a whole is set in the wrong place.”

De laatste woorden van mijn engelse grootmoeder
1920

Naast haar op een tafeltje
vlak bij het gore, slonzige bed
stonden wat vuile borden
en een glas melk –

Rimpelig en bijna blind
lag ze te snurken
wakkerschrikkend om op
boze toon eten te eisen,

Geeme iets te eten –
Ze laten me verhongeren –
Ik voel me best ik ga niet
naar het ziekenhuis. Nee, nee, nee

Geef me iets te eten
Laat mij je naar het ziekenhuis
brengen, zei ik,
en wanneer je weer goed bent

kun je doen wat je wilt.
Ze glimlachte, Ja
eerst doe jij wat jij wilt en
dan kan ik doen wat ik wil –

Oh, oh, oh! riep ze
toen de broeders haar
op de draagbaar tilden –
Noemen jullie dit

‘t iemand naar de zin maken?
Haar geest was helder nu –
O jullie denken slim te zijn
jullie jongelui,

zei ze, maar ik zeg jullie
jullie weten niets.
Toen vertrokken we.
Onderweg

passeerden we een lange rij
iepen. Ze keek er een tijdje naar
door het raam van de
ziekenwagen en zei,

Wat zijn al die
wazige dingen daarginds?
Bomen?

A very windy day, delicate young leaves soaring in the air

A very windy day, delicate young leaves soaring in the air.
Then rain. Then evening. Then wine,
then I wonder: what else could there be?
Even love, that grossly overrated real estate.
When you go to look, only a railroad car
that stops for a moment, and the sun does shine
upon the platform, the roses, those waiting;
it’s just that you have nothing to do with it.

The wind stirs up more clouds from the sea;
they are dramatic in sunset,
the light as if made of a metal.

4. Dezember, Donnerstag.

Tod, du Guter, du bist es,
der uns mit dem Leben
am sichersten verknüpft.
Heute hat es wieder geschneit.
Die Flocken waren groß und stoben,
als wäre wieder Frühling.
Als wäre wieder Frühling:
in meinem heimlichen Körper
wirbeln schwarze Wasser.
Ich bin glücklich,
dass ich sterblich bin.
Wenigstens darin

Uit: Border State (Vertaald door Madli Puhvel)

“Where did I come from, my crime and I, Franz and I (“France?” you said, because I pronounced it badly. No not France, but Franz. By the way, he was half French, half Ger-man, from Strasbourg, where we met), my grandmother and I? I saw her in a dream yesterday … Yes, I saw my grandmother and a cat called Milvi. Actually, they are both dead, although I’m not sure about Milvi. She disappeared. Maybe she’s still prowling the neighbourhood, and who can ever be sure about my grandmother!
As you see, I have a hard time finding a beginning. And yet I don’t have much to do here except think about this letter. I walk through empty, blank days, briefcase in hand, carrying photocopies of the poems my old men have written (that’s my “work”; I’ll tell you about it later) and a pocket edition of Madame de Sevigne’s letters. I walk through Montsouris Park, where late-flowering double jasmines are still blooming. I stop under the cedar of Lebanon, smell the resin, and dive into the underground world of the Metro. I meet ghosts there as well as people .
Actually, I’m constantly thinking about my testimony, because I will have to testify. I weigh the trifling words I have to say about myself as a human being, about my trivial crime in a world . . . If only I knew where to begin, then there would be no problem! Should I start with what I saw a long time ago, in that other century, through the first-floor window of that prefabricated apartment house, the window that Grandmother never allowed to be opened? Or with Amsterdam, that sweet, crime-ridden city? Or with the garbage bin that I threw the newspaper into, the one with Franz’s name printed in big fat letters? Should I start with what was, or what is, if what is still is, this vertigo, this blindness, this blinding sunshine! Yes, sunshine. If I am to start at random, then I’ll start with sunshine. I yearned for sunshine. I had a passion for sun, and it was following this passion that brought me to this town where so much of the world’s beauty and wealth is gathered, so many gifts of the sun, as well as ugliness, pain, and want, which even gold and jewels cannot hide. Ultimately, to the town where you appeared before me, from out of nowhere, so that I could tell you my story. My story! Just like the fairy tale told in bygone days beside a cozy fire. A story that also had neither a beginning nor an end but was unhurried and grisly, where one would encounter wolves that killed, snakes that talked, and fairies. But you did not emerge from the blizzard into a flickering light. Nor are you a gray-bearded old man. On the contrary, you are young and desirable. You are my mirror, my double and opposite. You emerged from the cool Sunday sunshine that engulfed the strollers who had stopped to window-shop, or who stood as though entranced on the terrace of the cafe; unreal figments of light, summoned by the senseless pealing of the bells of Saint Eustache or Notre Dame or Saint Merri.”

In de open lucht

Gevangen in het systeem
van het verkochte landschap rest mij

nog het meer, ga ik op voor-
geschreven weg door

borden bespied de helling af
langs muren hekken

voorbij het kasteel
bij het gevangenispoortbrede stuk kust
van de bezitlozen:

ruimte die
zich opent, vreemde uitgestrektheid

schaduwloos licht frisse
met wind om mijn heupen kan ik

door verdikt slib door modder
in sociaal rioolwater waden

met verre stranden voor ogen weg-
zwemmen tot  de uitputting volgt

Uit: Flanders Diary (Vertaald door Miriam McIlfatrick)

“The first to push this anticipation further into the future was perhaps the Church itself, when it started to build heavy stone churches, crypts, beneath which the chosen dead had to await the Resurrection. The very thickness of the walls shows that this event is not likely to to come about any time soon.
I have not lived in other cultures so I do not know if anticipation occupies such an important place in them. Some claim that it does not, but I do not place much trust in such external observation of foreign cultures. You see what you are looking for there. And if you live it as your own, you do not see anything other than life.
This civilisation that I see here in the heart of Europe, in old Flanders, on my salutary bicycle trips through these endlessly branching and snaking little concrete roads, this is our civilisation and yet it is not. I am as much inside it as outside it. It is a question of a small shift of time and space. I am still not used to everything being ready, concreted, smoothed, fully constructed, in order and reliable. But I have seen the speed and enthusiasm with which Estonia has in recent years aspired to this state, and with some success, though “a great deal still has to be done”. I have never really believed that we will ever achieve this state in our country. We made it to the party-table at the very last minute, we did make it but a wee bit too late. Just in time for dessert. Soon the waiters will start clearing the table, the party is over, the guests are tired and a little drunk, everyone is going home. We probably will not achieve such a level of concreting, mechanisation and welfare, because before getting there the spiritual and material preconditions will have been lost. Boredom and fear will destroy the spiritual preconditions, mother nature will take care of the material preconditions.
Because what will happen, I am thinking on the spiritual plane, when everything is ready? What is left for people then? Boredom, because there is nothing else to do except everyday aimless (yes, aimless, because it changes practically nothing) pottering about, though of course like Sisyphus people always try to get ahead, bring home a new computer, install a faster internet browser, fly away to some even further part of the globe. And come back no wiser because how far away was it really? And fear, when they occasionally stop to think about things (and this moment comes every day), just like when we walk past the mirror and see ourselves, before it occurs to us to make that face that we usually make when we look in the mirror. We are afraid because we have so much. Or it seems to us that we have so much, i.e., we have so much to lose. Or just as much to escape from?
Creating well-being has for some time been purely fictitious. As there is actually nothing more to add, appearances are added. What is human well-being? To eat your fill (and not just anything, but what tastes good), to be protected from the elements, to sleep in a warm enough room between cool clean sheets, to “have” a husband or wife, preferably children too, who appreciate and love you, not to spend every minute in fear for your life. In short, peace, a fear-free existence, just enough excitement … Voilà. Of course, the trouble with this is that well-being is very hard to define. Because it does not exist. It is where we are not. If your stomach is full of delicacies, it starts to hurt, your health.”

14.43 uur. De wasmachine weer eens aangezet. Raar.

C. Ficq.

Albrecht Nederland zit in Culemborg.

19.29 uur. Cappuccino met “One for my baby”.

It’s my kind of town Chicago is !

20.57 uur.

Of Torch song trilogy?

Kundera, Arie, schrijft inderdaad hele mooie zinnen.”

Uit: Flanders Diary (Vertaald door Miriam McIlfatrick)

“More Chinese vases in windows, gnomes in gardens, appliances in kitchens? Well, all right, but if you already have Chinese vases, gnomes and a whole range of appliances, then perhaps you no longer notice the difference. Home appliances can of course be replaced by new ones and in recent times you have to do so frequently, because they tend to break down increasingly quickly and no one repairs them any more. And then the new machine has some extra programme, which means that it will break even more quickly, but of course it does the same thing as before, it boils, it cooks or it washes.
Formerly, the humanists thought that if a person is freed from hard and degrading physical labour, he will devote himself to poetry, art, philosophy, philanthropy and self-improvement.
This proved to be a miscalculation, because it departed from a false premise. Considering physical work hard and degrading was simply a biblical, ecclesiastical and aristocratic prejudice. The humanists could just have looked around to see whether or not those who already had been, and had been from one generation to the next, freed from that hard and degrading curse (to earn the bread they ate by the sweat of their brow), had devoted themselves to poetry and philosophy or predominantly to something else instead. Education certainly makes people better. But only a little. And even that is not really certain. A comfortable life makes people better because it is more comfortable not to bother with other people if you have everything you need. There is just no knowing to what extent this advantage will remain if the assumption, i.e. comfort, is removed. We have not seen that yet, but we probably will, those of us who are spared long enough.
I do not know when the idea originated in mankind that life should keep getting better. Some people blame the creation of this precondition for a belief in progress, like everything else by the way, on Christianity, because it replaced the old cyclical perception of time (that everything repeats and returns like the seasons, the moon and the sun in their circuits) with finiteness, with the conception of the end of time, towards which we are moving. In fact, this notion that we are m o v i n g in that direction may only have developed in the course of many centuries; initially, the return of Christ was imminently expected, even within the same generation. It did not matter that it was already several tens of generations since it was first anticipated. It is common knowledge that wherever you are, in a field or in bed, alone or in a crowd, right there and then that hour will strike you.”

Uit: Matilda

“Matilda’s brother Michael was a perfectly normal boy, but the sister, as I said, was something to make your eyes pop. By the age of one and a half her speech was perfect and she knew as many words as most grown-ups. The parents, instead of applauding her, called her a noisy chatterbox and told her sharply that small girls should be seen and not heard.
By the time she was three, Matilda had taught herself to read by studying newspapers and magazines that lay around the house. At the age of four, she could read fast and well and she naturally began hankering after books. The only book in the whole of this enlightened household was something called Easy Cooking belonging to her mother, and when she had read this from cover to cover and had learnt all the recipes by heart, she decided she wanted something more interesting.
“Daddy,” she said, “do you think you could buy me a book?”
“A book?” he said. “What d’you want a flaming book for?”
“To read, Daddy.”
“What’s wrong with the telly, for heaven’s sake? We’ve got a lovely telly with a twelve-inch screen and now you come asking for a book! You’re getting spoiled, my girl!”
Nearly every weekday afternoon Matilda was left alone in the house. Her brother (five years older than her) went to school. Her father went to work and her mother went out playing bingo in a town eight miles away. Mrs Wormwood was hooked on bingo and played it five afternoons a week. On the afternoon of the day when her father had refused to buy her a book, Matilda set out all by herself to walk to the public library in the village. When she arrived, she introduced herself to the librarian, Mrs Phelps. She asked if she might sit awhile and read a book. Mrs Phelps, slightly taken aback at the arrival of such a tiny girl unaccompanied by a parent, nevertheless told her she was very welcome.
“Where are the children’s books please?” Matilda asked.
“They’re over there on those lower shelves,” Mrs Phelps told her. “Would you like me to help you find a nice one with lots of pictures in it?”
“No, thank you,” Matilda said. “I’m sure I can manage.”

Uit: Antigone in New York (Vertaald door Joan Torres)

« ANITA: “Can I ask you just one thing? Are you sure he’s dead? Because so many things could happen around here. I mean, he could have just passed out or something or fallen asleep under something where no one could see him. He could have gotten drunk. Are you absolutely sure? Because sometimes people get confused and think they see one thing but really it’s something else. You have to be one hundred percent sure…,The Indian told me the ambulance took him too but I don’t trust him. He’s always lying. You know what I mean?…. (weeping into her hands) I knew it. It was that cashmere sweater. I let it get to me. I knew it was bad luck but I took it anyway. They were giving it away and I just couldn’t leave it there. This sweater belonged to some unhappy person. Happy people don’t wear cashmere sweaters but unhappy people, they are either too cold or too hot and instead of going to the doctor they buy a cashmere sweater and when they put it on they start sweating right away and then their sweat goes into the cashmere and their bad luck sticks to it. You can wash it. You can even dry clean it but it won’t do any good. The bad luck stays in the sweater no matter what you do. (she drinks the cold coffee and throws the empty cup into the trash basket) If you have to wear a cashmere sweater it’s best to get one with shoulder pads in it because that’s where the bad luck collects. Then you can just pull out the pads and throw them away. That helps. I did that right away but it just wasn’t enough. I felt it when I got it. But now it’s too late. (weeps more, and opens her coat to show him). See? This is acryllic. And Acryllic is no problem. You just take it off and shake it off and shake it a couple of times (she demonstrates) and the bad luck disappears. (praying again). What am I going to do?”

Was liegt darin? erzähle!

Es liegt darin ein wenig Klang,
Ein wenig Wohllaut und Gesang
Und eine ganze Seele.

Lebenszweck

Hilflos in die Welt gebannt,
Selbst ein Rätsel mir,
In dem schalen Unbestand,
Ach, was soll ich hier?

– Leiden, armes Menschenkind,
Jede Erdennot,
Ringen, armes Menschenkind,

In den Augen der Sonne funkelte auf sein harter, böser Blick;

Switch

In the wall there sticks a little switch,
A little switch – electric, which –
Just give that little switch a click –
Brings you light double quick.

It’s easy all right:
Click and there’s light!
Flick once more – then
We’re in darkness again.
And if you give it another go,
You get the glow you had before.

It has such a secret might,
There in the wall, that tiny trick!
Night – light –
Light – night.

But tell me what’s that little switch?
A spark? A candle in a stick?
How’d it get there? From where can it be?

It’s no sparkle. It’s a cable.
Just a wire and – it’s electricity!!
Just flick the switch and – electricity!
Electrically slick electriciteeeee!

So where’s the light from?
Now you see!

The ABCs

The ABCs fell off the mantelpiece,
Slammed against the ground,
They scattered into all four corners,
And shattered all around:
I—misplaced its dot,
H—is strangely squat,
B—bruised its belly,
A—‘s legs turned to jelly,
O—popped like a balloon,
causing P to swoon,
T—lost its hat,
L—jumped into U, just like that,
S—straightened out,
R—broken right leg no doubt,
W—is head-over-heels,
discovering exactly how M feels.

1914

Moet navertellen in rijmen,
Wat Hij daar nog in ziet.

Uit: Flanders Diary (Vertaald door Miriam McIlfatrick)

“This perfect world is strange, and a little awful. I went out on the bike yesterday, planning to stay out longer, to go further, I felt that I could not stand being here in this room or outside any longer. Curious, at home I hardly ever get that feeling. I can move between room and garden for a whole week, going no further and it never enters my head that I should. If I have to go somewhere, it is simply a bore. It would be nteresting to know how many of those writers whose pictures are hanging on the corridor wall have agonized here? Most of them, I suspect. This bed where I toss and turn must have been a similar nightly battleground for a fair few. A struggle with your chimera, a writhing consciousness which wants to become itself in the mirror, but does not dare. Dreams. I am already a little afraid of this room with its cold, damp smell, the constant whine of a gnat in some corner, the broad white bed. Only at midday when the sun shines in through the withered vine tendrils and scatters patches of light over everything, is it good to stretch out, not on the bed but on the hard wooden sofa.
A perfect world … It would be if we did not have such imperfect dreams. Yesterday I decided to do the 39-kilometre cycle route and it was good. It goes along backroads, in between fields. There is more land round there, less real estate development. There is not much development anywhere, the real estate is for the most part ready, completed earlier. The same goes for the roads. The smaller roads here are made of reinforced concrete, they seem to consist of slabs with little interstices, just like the Narva, or rather, the Leningrad road once was. It was built by German prisoners of war. In one place near Tollenbeek I saw this concreting, they were doing repair work. Apart from that there is no major road construction anywhere to be seen. Everything is ready. When this was all done, all this concrete laid down between the cornfields and grazing land, is impossible to guess. Earlier. And all these houses. If anything else is built on, it is garages. Not that there aren’t any garages, where would you find a house without a garage! You can always add another one, two or three, if the site is big enough of course. Cars seem to be multiplying here, as with us. Life is good. Could it be better? I do not think so, not significantly. Everyone could have slightly larger houses, but would anyone want that, especially when they are away from home all day. There is enough to do as it is.
The roads could be a little smoother, but what difference would it really make whether the road under you is very smooth or slightly less smooth if, on the way to work in the morning and back home in the evening, you have to sit in a traffic jam anyway?”

Badelied

Uit: Border State (Vertaald door Madli Puhvel)

WHAT WAS IT YOU SAID AGAIN? “YOU HAVE A STRANGE LOOK IN your eyes-like a bystander observing the world. You’re not French, are you?”
Yes, I think that those were your first words, Angelo, as you emerged from that vacuously bright sunshine, like an image appearing on white photographic paper when it’s immersed in developing solution. I have waited in the hellish glow of a darkroom and watched over a shoulder as a special pair of hands performed witchcraft above the murky liquid. The point at which the picture first emerged, that brink of development, fascinated me even more than the shoulder and the hands … That, by the way, was so long ago, in another century, in a forgotten country. But they must have been familiar with Daguerre’s discovery. I remember the developing tank quite clearly. I’ll tell you about that century and country eventually, and about the hands that lost their seductiveness with time. Everything in sequence! There is so much to tell you. That is, to write you, because I promised to write you. I promised to put everything down gradually, from beginning to end, if I can find a beginning and an end.
You are a stranger I may never again meet. You have come from the other side of the world and know nothing of what I am about to tell you. I could lie, could fabricate whatever my heart desired!
It was at random you talked to me in that town. No, not quite at random: you chose me because you were sent to question me, and now you have no choice. I never tried telling anyone all this before because people always think they know everything. They prejudge. You won’t prejudge, Angelo.
I don’t know whether you even exist. Pardon my poor French, by the way. I only dare to write you because I know you too are not French. You’re nobody special, no one in particular. That’s the only reason I dare turn to you. You in turn must think it is I who appeared from nowhere, from the bottom of the ocean, or the other side of the moon, from Bosnia-Herzegovina, or from an apartment filled with the suffocating stench of an indoor privy, in a small town beside a river in Eastern Europe, from behind a stack of firewood.”

Quelque part à un tournant du destin

Quelque part à un tournant du destin
les mains de Dieu sont pleines
de tulipes et de narcisses
cireux charnus rebelles

Ce craquement me dérange.
