Always at an edge with oceans,
near the night,
he slept
open as anemones
whose tendrils know
the slightest touch of quiet
and cannot be forced to flower.

Always under oceans in the night,
the single muscle
within the durable, opening shell
feels the brute dark presence
of the Devonian night
float immensely by.

Closing, they involve
whatever the intruding sea
has dropped
in their astonished flesh.

I.
Music seems reconciled with silence.
Palestrina, Tanis, and Machaut:
instants of silver on the still dark sea.

The idle men and unharvested corn
are orange in the autumn afternoon sky,
as hard upon the earth
the dance excites the dust.
Those who are too old for dancing
sit outside the circle
and scrape the bark of dirt from their wooden feet.
Then the singing begins,
stretching across the drums
as the men, holding their arms in tight along their sides,
float above the violence of their feet.

Noem deze nacht catacombe,
dit gekozen werk,
gebroken sacrament.
Babels gave van tongen,
poëzie splitst de hemel op.

Dus naar de hel met kunst,
morgen ga ik beginnen
onverbiddelijk voor Hem alleen.
(Kan ik de tong
stom als knieën buigen
en een altaarrail maken van brute tanden?)
