Uit: The Two Hotel Francforts

“So that was how we came to be at the Suica that morning-the Suica, the café that, of all the cafés in Lisbon, we foreigners had chosen to colonize. We were sitting outdoors, having breakfast and watching the traffic go round the oval of the Rossio, and it was this notion of settling in Portugal that Julia was going on about, as I drank my coffee and ate a second of those delicious little flan-filled tartlets in which the Suica specializes, and she laid out a hand of solitaire, which she played incessantly, using a special set of miniature cards. Slopes-lap went the cards; natternatter went her voice, as for the hundredth time she related her mad scheme to rent an apartment or a villa in Estoril; and as I explained to her, for the hundredth time, that it was no good, because at any moment Hitler might forge an alliance with Franco, in which case Portugal would be swallowed up by the Axis. And how funny to think that when all was said and done, she was right and I was wrong! For we would have been perfectly safe in Portugal. Well, it is too late for her to lord that over me now.
It was then that the pigeons swooped-so many of them, flying so low, that I had to duck. In ducking, I knocked her cards off the table. “It’s all right, I’ll get them,” I said to Julia, and was bending to do so when my glasses fell off my face. A passing waiter, in his effort to keep his trayful of coffee cups from spilling, kicked the glasses down the pavement, right into Edward Freleng’s path. It was he who stepped on them.
“Oh, damn,” he said, picking up what was left of the frames.
“Whose are these?
“They’re mine,” I said, from the ground, where Iwas still trying to collect the cards: no mean feat, since a breeze had just come up-or perhaps the pigeons had churned it up-and scattered them the length of the sidewalk.
“Let me help you with that,” Edward said, and got down on his knees next to me.”

„Aida strahlte ihn an.

Gebroken noch verstoord;

En waarlijk, het wèrd ook gewonnen, geboren;

Gelijk hun broeder bloeit.

Alsof mijn kind daar sliep.

De vogelaar

Van de appels ’t bloesemsnoer,
En langs de groene vloer
Der velden knoop en klit,
Goudgeel, zacht paars, en wit,

De mazen van de zon,
De draad, die ’t lommer spon,
Dit is het blinkend net,
Dit is het blinkend net,
Hier heimlijk uitgezet.

Gij, die vervolgt en jaagt,
Loerend wat vlucht belaagt,
0 heilig-groot gevaar,

“That gray-haired, powerfully built man sitting lost in thought, with his little page at his side, is Creon, the King. His face is lined. He is tired. He practices the difficult art of a leader of men. When he was younger, when Oedipus was King and Creon was no more than the King’s brother-in-law, he was different. He loved music, bought rare manuscripts, was a kind of art patron. He would while away whole afternoons in the antique shops of this city of Thebes. But Oedipus died. Oedipus’ sons died. Creon’s moment had come. He took over the kingdom. HAD TO ROLL UP HIS SLEEVES AND TAKE OVER THE KINGDOM. I’ll tell you something about Creon. NOW AND THEN, WHEN HE GOES TO BED WEARY WITH THE DAY’S WORK, HE WONDERS WHETHER THIS BUSINESS OF BEING A LEADER OF MEN IS WORTH THE TROUBLE. He has a tendency to fool himself. This leader of men, this brilliant debater and logician, likes to believe that if it were not for his sense of responsibility, he would step right down from the throne and go back to collecting manuscripts. But the fact is he loves being king. He’s an artist who has always believed that he could govern just as well as any man of action could. That pale young man ONE leaning against the wall is the Messenger. Later on he will come running in to announce that Haemon is dead. He has a premonition of catastrophe. That’s what he is brooding over. That’s why he won’t mingle with the others. As for those three pasty-RED-faced card players — they are the guards, members of Creon’s police. They chew tobacco; one smells of garlic, another of beer; but they’re not a bad lot. They have wives they are afraid of, kids who are afraid of them; they’re bothered by the little day-today worries that beset us all. At the same time — they are policemen: eternally innocent, no matter what crimes are committed; eternally indifferent, for nothing that happens can matter to them.”

Uit: The Bridge Across Forever

“I had an hypothesis, almost a theory, well on its way before you stopped my research: beautiful women, they don’t much care for sex.”
She laughed in surprise. “Oh, Richard, you’re not serious! Really?”
“Really.” I was caught in contrary pressures. I wanted to tell her, and I wanted to touch her, too. Time for both, I thought, time for both.
“Do you know what’s wrong with your hypothesis?” she said.
“Nothing, I don’t think. There are exceptions and you’re one, thank the Maker, but generally it’s true: beautiful women get so tired of being seen as sex-things, when they know they matter so much more than that, their switches turn off.”
“Nice, but no,” she said. “Why not?”
“Sexist goose. Turn it around. I have a theory, Richard, that handsome men don’t much care for sex.”
“Nonsense! What are you getting at?”
“Listen: I’m defended like a fortress against handsome men, I’m cold to them, I keep them at arm’s-length, don’t let them be a part of my life, and somehow it doesn’t seem as if they enjoy sex as much as I want them to…”
“No wonder,” I said, and in a flying shatter of broken conjecture I knew what
she was saying. “No wonder! If you weren’t so cold to them, if you’d open up a little, let them know how you feel, what you think—none of us really handsome men wants to be treated as a sex-machine, after all! Now, if a woman shows us a little human warmth, there’s a different story!”

Twenty-first. Night. Monday

Twenty-first. Night. Monday.
Silhouette of the capitol in darkness.
Some good-for-nothing — who knows why–
made up the tale that love exists on earth.

People believe it, maybe from laziness
or boredom, and live accordingly:
they wait eagerly for meetings, fear parting,
and when they sing, they sing about love.

But the secret reveals itself to some,
and on them silence settles down…
I found this out by accident
and now it seems I’m sick all the time.

Hoe we slapen

Later zullen ze ons vinden, in holtes
in steen, onder lagen kalk en aarde

ze zullen zich voorstellen, met voorzichtige handen
gruis uit onze neuzen aaien
ons uit kiezelgrond kloppen en vegen

ze zullen nagaan hoeveel licht we vingen
de vleugelslagen die we maakten
het wrijven van onze voeten

misschien vermoeden dat we nachtenlang
keken hoe sneeuwwolken voorbijtrokken
wij onze armen
klapwiekend in de lucht hielden

hoe mijn lichaam onder je handen past
