Uit: Traag licht

De vrouwen in mijn leven hielden mij ieder op hun eigen manier een spiegel voor. Mannen deden dat niet, zelfs mijn beste vrienden niet. Mannen bevechten elkaar of steunen elkaar onvoorwaardelijk.

(…)

Uit: Satisfy My Soul

Up ahead a herd of cattle toddle down a path. They moo and jostle as they splash into the ocher river, triggering the flowers on a tree festooned with Spanish moss to burst into a spray of screeching birds.
In theory this is stunning. But in Jamaica, an island that produces elemental drama daily, no one stops to look. Not the women spreading clothes on white boulders. Not the naked children swinging out on leafy vines. Not the men in trunks and soccer shorts who wade upstream, waist deep, empty bamboo rafts in tow, hunched against the current, delivering the vessels to the starting point for tips.
Fifteen feet away from us the captain of our raft is punting with a slender pole. The braided muscles in his back are coiling. His navy polo shirt is snug. Water tongues the grooves between the knuckled stems that form the hull. In essence we are sailing on a fence.
People are watching me. Waiting. A bead of perspiration stretches from my beard and bursts against my shirt.
Then as the captain steers around a bar of silt I find a question.
“Okay, Chadwick, on the night before you’re set to go to the gallows you get a set of choices. A last book. A last song. A last meal with any writer living or dead. And the chance to sleep with anyone in the whole wide world—a living anyone, of course.”
The producer on the raft beside us smiles and makes a fist. This is how she told me that she wants the show to be—arch and energetic.
I am a guest on Trapped in Transit, a travel show on A&E.
Each week on TIT, as all the members of the crew appear to call it, an odd couple chosen from the worlds of politics and entertainment take a journey: Howard Stern and Yasir Arafat canoeing in Mongolia. Martha Stewart and Biz Markie on a llama in Peru.
Chadwick is a congressman. If his reparations bill is passed, every black American will receive a million dollars in exchange for relocation to Liberia.”

Song Of Youth

Sing, youth, the loveliest song you know!
Sing the song that seethes within your breast,
Let your joy burst forth in passion…
Don’t hold back your song! Let it soar.

Sing your song, youth. I beg you sing…
Let it seize you, kiss you, inspire you to love
With youthful ardour… Let the foaming wave of feelings
Which your song arouses surge over us.

Sing your song, youth, and laugh like children!
Let the sound of your voice rise to the heavens
And echo back to us again, from the envious stars.

For we adore you, as we adore the sun.
Sing, youth! Sing your joyful song!
Laugh, youth, laugh! The world is yours.

Final Songs

A sleepless night
Suffering
Luckless inspiration
Incomprehensible song
Solitude
Under the banners of melancholy

Reconnaissance

After the cloud embankments,
the lamentation of wind
and the starry descent into time,
we came to the flashing waters and shaded our eyes
from the glare.

Alone with the shore and the harbor,
the stems of the cocoanut trees,
the fronds of silence and hushed music,
we cried for the new revelation
and waited for miracles to rise.

Where elements touch and merge,
where shadows swoon like outcasts on the sand
and the tried moment waits, its courage gone–
there were we

in latitudes where storms are born.

Uit: The Sea of Grass

“That lusty pioneer blood is tamed now, broken and gelded like a wild horse and the frontier settlement. And I think that I shall never see it flowing through human veins again as I did in my Uncle Jim Brewton riding a lathered horse across a shaggy range, or standing in his massive ranch house, bare of furniture as a garret, and holding together his empire of grass and cattle with the fire in his eyes”

(…)

“….she went on chatting to me in slightly incoherent but charming fashion, saying the gayest of things, that required little or none of my tounge tied answers, all the while her delicate forehead shutting out the water tank and that ring of staring loafers as completely as if she stood alone with me in my uncles ranch house. And I realized that here was a finer fibered creature than any my long black hair and rope calloused hands had known”

Uit: Diaries

“Liverpool, Thursday,July 25 1996, 10.20pm

I’m here to help sort out Mum’s flat. The carpet hunt reminded me why coming to Liverpool is like arriving in a different country — a bit like Bulgaria, I imagine — in which nothing’s ever easy, straightforward, sophisticated or courteous.

At Carpet World, a loudmouth salesman cackled at the idea of free fitting, said the cheapest underlay was £3.49 (it wasn’t), did all his sums terrifyingly in his head and wise-cracked his way round the shop. Oh, how I loathe all those Scousers who want to be Freddie Starr.

Took Mum to Evita tonight at the Empire. There was an odd moment when I thought of old love, and suddenly felt very sad.

I miss [John Major] so — it was so precious, while it lasted — and whenever I see actors embrace, mouth to mouth, it turns me over, for it’s so long since anyone kissed me with passion and longing.

Oh, misery. And I so loathe wasting hours dining with constituents, like last Friday night. How can people be so uninteresting — their hols in hotels in Cyprus . . . argh.”
