Boksbal

Wanneer ik buiten fiets
– ik fiets altijd buiten
ik ben klein behuisd –
en de regen me doorweekt
terwijl ruk- en valwinden
op me inbeuken
zodat ik slalom
als een beschonkene
bedenk ik

Zolang ik tegen
de elementen vecht
vecht ik niet
tegen mezelf

Couperus

Op het Lange Voorhout
kwam ik Louis Couperus tegen
Hij droeg een duffelse jas
en een zwierige hoed
en onder zijn arm een
klein
wit
poedeltje
dat was bewerkt
met een flitspuit
onkiese parfum

Uit: Heart and Soul

“The younger ones are on top of it, they say things like, ‘Oh, you’d never be able to satisfy me like my old man does,’ or else that, sure, they are gay because the only alternative is horrible spotty boys with filthy fingernails.” Aidan shook his head. “By the time I get to the classroom I’m worn out,” he said sadly.“Why don’t you give it up?” Nora said suddenly. She taught Italian at an evening class and organized a yearly outing to Italy for the group. She had several other small jobs, but she had no interest in money or pensions or the future. She sat in one of the basket chairs she had bought at a garage sale and tried to persuade Aidan to join her in this carefree lifestyle. But he was a worrier. It would be idiotic to leave his school now several years before retirement date. It would mean no proper pension; if he were to amount to anything he had to provide for Nora and his family from an earlier marriage.“Oh, you’ve well provided for them,” Nora said cheerfully.“You’ve given Nell most of the money you got for the house, Grania is married to the headmaster of Mountainview School, Brigid has been made a partner in the travel agency. They should be providing for you, if you come to think of it.”“But you, Nora, what about you? I want to look after you, give you some comfort and pleasures.”“You give me great comfort and pleasures,” she said.“But some security, Nora,” he pleaded.“I never had security before, I don’t want it now.”“I have to finish out my time there.”

Love and the Novice

“Here we dwell, in holiest bowers,
Where angels of light o’er our orisans bend;
Where sighs of devotion and breathings of flowers
To heaven in mingled odour ascend.
Do not disturb our calm, oh Love!
So like is thy form to the cherubs above,
It well might deceive such hearts as ours.”

Love stood near the Novice and listen’d,
And Love is no novice in taking a hint;
His laughing blue eyes soon with piety glisten’d;
His rosy wing turn’d to heaven’s own tint.
“Who would have thought,” the urchin cries,
“That Love could so well, so gravely disguise
His wandering wings, and wounding eyes?”

Love now warms thee, waking and sleeping,
Young Novice, to him all thy orisons rise.
He tinges the heavenly fount with his weeping,
He brightens the censer’s flame with his sighs.
Love is the Saint enshrined in thy breast,
And angels themselves would admit such a guest,
If he came to them clothed in Piety’s vest.

Uit: Goldfinger

“Bond said casually, “Why does the man always wear that bowler hat?”
“Oddjob!” The Korean had reached the service door. “The hat.” Goldfinger pointed at a panel in the woodwork near the fireplace.
Still holding the cat under his left arm, Oddjob turned and walked stolidly back towards them. When he was half way across the floor, and without pausing or taking aim, he reached up to his hat, took it by the rim and flung it sideways with all his force. There was a loud clang. For an instant the rim of the bowler hat stuck an inch deep in the panel Goldfinger had indicated, then it fell and clattered on the floor.
Goldfinger smiled politely at Bond. “A light but very strong alloy, Mr Bond.
I fear that will have damaged the felt covering, buy Oddjob will put on another. He’s surprisingly quick with a needle and thread. As you can imagine, that blow would have smashed a man’s skull or half severed his neck. A homely and a most ingeniously concealed weapon, I’m sure you’ll agree.”
“Yes, indeed.” Bond smiled with equal politeness. “Useful chap to have around.”

Uit: Love in the Ruins

“Comes again the longing, the desire that has no name. Is it for Mrs. Prouty, for a drink, for both: for a party, for youth, for the good times, for dear good drinking and fighting comrades, for football-game girls in the fall with faces like flowers? Comes the longing and it has to do with being fifteen and fifty and with the winter sun striking down into a brick-yard and on clapboard walls rounded off with old hard blistered paint and across a doorsill onto linoleum. Desire has a smell: of cold linoleum and gas heat and the sour piebald bark of crepe myrtle. A good-humored thirty-five-year-old lady takes the air in a back lot in a small town.”
(…)

“What she didn’t understand, she being spiritual and seeing religion as spirit, was that it took religion to save me from the spirit world, from orbiting the earth like Lucifer and the angels, that it took nothing less than touching the thread off the misty interstates and eating Christ himself to make me mortal man again and let me inhabit my own flesh and love her in the morning.”
