SONNET
Morn’s beaming eyes at length unclose,
And wake the blushes of the rose,
That all night long oppress’d with dews,
And veil’d in chilly shade its hues,
Reclin’d, forlorn, the languid head,
And sadly sought its parent bed;
Warmth from her ray the trembling flow’r derives,
And, sweetly blushing, through its tears revives.

“Morn’s beaming eyes at length unclose,”
And melt the tears that bend the rose;
But can their charms suppress the sigh,
Or chace the tear from Sorrow’s eye?
Can all their lustrous light impart
One ray of peace to sorrow’s heart?
Ah! no; their fires her fainting soul oppress—
Eve’s pensive shades more soothe her meek distress!”

SONNET
How-sweet is Love’s first gentle sway,
When crown’d with flow’rs he softly smiles!
His blue eyes fraught with tearful wiles,
Where beams of tender transport play:
Hope leads him on his airy way,
And Faith and Fancy still beguiles—
Faith quickly tangled in her toils—
Fancy, whose magic forms so gay
The fair Deceiver’s self deceive—
‘How sweet is Love’s first gentle sway!’
Ne’er would that heart he bids to grieve
From Sorrow’s soft enchantments stray—
Ne’er—till the God exulting in his art,
Relentless frowns and wings th’ envenom’d dart.”

The Parthenon

Where they tamed the wild Libyan
Unmarried war-goddess, goatskin-aproned;
Transmuted the owl-shrieking bugaboo
Into an image of wisdom –

A dash in a reckless and exorbitant taxi
Will get you there; then climb
Above the esurient, lively and stuffy city,
Feet slipping on loose stones.

Suddenly it stands there; like a familiar quotation
From dusty oleographs, the model
Of every second-rate “classical” building –
Church or museum –

Off-white like a sea-worn shell,
Like a bird’s skull,
Under remorseless light;
Denuded the colour and gold

Long since; the centaurs and heroes
Shanghaied to Bloomsbury.
It seems very small;
And She has departed.

So that’s all. There is nothing to do
But stand and gape like any other
Romantic tourist; and then go.

But turn your back, and stumble

Down the steep track – then suddenly
The mathematical candour,
Neither over – nor under – statement,

Owl-clawed, hooks to the heart.

Uit: Trente-trois sonnets composés au secret

VIII

IX
Traduit de Hugo von Hoffmannsthal
Une coupe au bord de la bouche,
elle allait d’un si ferme pas
et la main si sûre que pas
une goutte ne se versa.
Il montait un cheval farouche.
Si sûre et ferme était sa main
que, frémissant au coup de frein,
le cheval s’arrêta soudain.
Et, pourtant, quand la main légère
et l’autre main gantée de fer
cette simple coupe tendit,
ils tremblaient si fort, elle et lui,
que les mains se rencontrèrent,
et le vin se répandit.
