Uit: The White Goddess

“It seems that the Welsh minstrels, like the Irish poets, recited their traditional romances in prose, breaking into dramatic verse, with harp accompaniment, only at points of emotional stress. Some of these romances survive complete with the incidental verses; others have lost them; in some cases, such as the romance of Llywarch Hen, only the verses survive. The most famous Welsh collection is the Mabinogion, which is usually explained as ‘Juvenile Romances’, that is to say those that every apprentice to the minstrel profession was expected to know; it is contained in the thirteenth-century Red Book of Hergest. Almost all the incidental verses are lost. These romances are the stock-in-trade of a minstrel and some of them have been brought more up-to-date than others in their language and description of manners and morals.

The Red Book of Hergest also contains a jumble of fifty-eight poems, called The Book of Taliesin, among which occur the incidental verses of a Romance of Taliesin which is not included in the Mabinogion. However, the first part of the romance is preserved in a late sixteenth-century manuscript, called the ‘Peniardd M.S.’, first printed in the early nineteenth-century Myvyrian Archaiology, complete with many of the same incidental verses, though with textual variations. Lady Charlotte Guest translated this fragment, completing it with material from two other manuscripts, and included it in her well-known edition of the Mabinogion (1848). Unfortunately, one of the two manuscripts came from the library of Iolo Morganwg, a celebrated eighteenth-century ‘improver’ of Welsh documents, so that her version cannot be read with confidence, though it has not been proved that this particular manuscript was forged.“

Aquarium

Geweven vleugeltjes doet slaan.

Verbergt zich in kunst’ge doorschijnendheid;

Dan dacht hij: Nu begint zonsondergang;

En golven duisternis de omgeving vulden;

Zwart lag ‘k in geel; jij, triomfant’lijk, stond,

“Before they performed my surgery, they shaved my head, and in an instant I was bald. By the time winter rolled around my hair had finally grown in, and I was sporting a trendy, short cut.

When I revealed myself to my family and friends, they barked out unanimously, “Sakuchan! We’ve never seen you with short hair. You look so different, almost like a new person.”

Really? I thought, returning their smiles. Later, all alone, I opened the pages of my photo album in secret. Without a doubt, it was me in the pictures — that long hair and radiant smile. All the places I’d visited, all the scenes I’d encountered. I recognized each one of them from somewhere. I remembered…

…the weather in this picture, and…

…I had my period when they took that shot, so it was a pain to even stand up, and…

…and so on.

There was no question about it; it really was me in that album. It couldn’t have been anyone else. Still, something refused to ring a bell. A strange sensation, almost as if I had been floating.

Now I want to stand up and give myself, steadfast and determined, a round of applause for maintaining “me,” even though I had been thrust into such a strange psychological dilemma.

***

There were quite a few of us at home back then: my mother, me, my little brother Yoshio, who had just entered the fourth grade, and my mother’s old friend Junko, who was living with us for a while. My cousin Mikiko, a student at a nearby women’s university, was also at home. My father had passed away many years before, and since then my mother had both remarried and divorced. That’s why my brother’s father was different from mine. Actually, there was another sister between me and Yoshio. Her name was Mayu. She was my younger sister, from my mother’s first husband, so we shared the same father. Throughout her early life Mayu worked in the entertainment business, but that didn’t last for very long. Eventually she got out of it and moved in with a friend who was a writer. In the end her heart was troubled, and she died — as if she had taken her own life. It all happened quite some time ago.

Uit: Der Ketzer von Naumburg

“Ja! Ja!”
Niemand fragte: “Wer soll gehen? Wer soll sprechen?” Sie gingen alle zusammen.”

Uit: The Key (Vertaald door Howard Hibbett)

New Year’s Day
This year I intend to begin writing freely about a topic which, in the past, I have hesitated even to mention here. I have always avoided commenting on my sexual relations with Ikuko, for fear that she might surreptitiously read my diary and be offended. I dare say she knows exactly where to find it. But I have decided not to worry about that any more. Of course, her old-fashioned Kyoto upbringing has left her with a good deal of antiquated morality; indeed, she rather prides herself on it. It seems unlikely that she would dip into her husband’s private writings. However, that is not altogether out of the question. If now, for the first time, my diary becomes chiefly concerned with our sexual life, will she be able to resist the temptation? By nature she is furtive, fond of secrets, constantly holding back and pretending ignorance; worst of all, she regards that as feminine modesty. Even though I have several hiding places for the key to the locked drawer where I keep this book, such a woman may well have searched out all of them. For that matter, you could easily buy a duplicate of the key.
I have just said I’ve decided not to worry, but perhaps I really stopped worrying long ago. Secretly, I may have accepted, even hoped, that she was reading it. Then why do I lock the drawer and hide the key? Possibly to satisfy her weakness for spying. Besides, if I leave it where she is likely to see it, she may think: “This was written for my benefit,” and not be willing to trust what I say. She may even think: “His real diary is somewhere else.”
Ikuko, my beloved wife! I don’t know whether or not you will read this. There is no use asking, since you would surely say that you don’t do such things. But if you should, please believe that this is no fabrication, that every word of it is sincere. I won’t insist any further-that would seem all the more suspicious. The diary itself will bear witness to its own truth.“

Wenn morgens ich zu neuem Sein erwacht;

Kling fort, mein Lied!

Liebesantrag

Lass uns mit dem Feuer spielen,
Mit dem tollen Liebesfeuer;
Lass uns in den Tiefen wühlen,
Drin die grausen Ungeheuer.

Menschenherzens wilde Bestien,
Schlangen, Schakal und Hyänen,
Die den Leichnam noch beläst’gen
Mit den gier’gen Schneidezähnen.

Lass uns das Getier versammeln,
Lass es stacheln uns und hetzen.
Und die Tore fest verrammeln
Und uns königlich ergötzen.

Rosen hab ich …

Rosen hab ich aus dem Garten
In das Zimmer auf den Tisch gestellt,
Und ich spüre das Erwarten,
Wenn ein Blütenblatt sich löst und fällt.

Bald in rötlichem Erstrahlen,
Wie ein Zauberfloß aus Duft,
Schwimmen tausend Rosenschalen
Durch die laue Abendluft.

Wo ihr Blühen angekommen,
In dem Paradies der Welt,
Ist auch mein Lied aufgenommen,
Ihnen wieder beigesellt.

Grabschrift

Wenn du mich beweinen willst, beweine:
Was vergeblich in mir sang.
Denn ich schlug, wie du, auf Steine,
Daß der Quell daraus entsprang.

Das Vermächtnis unsrer Tage
Ist ins Schattenreich verbannt.
Wenn du klagen mußt — beklage
Gottes Welt in Menschenhand.

Uit: Across the Stream

“There was something odd about females, and it was a mystery into which he did not at all want to enquire. They wore skirts, which perhaps concealed some abnormality, which would be fearful to contemplate. They had soft faces and soft bodies; when his mother took him on her knee–she already said that he was getting too big a boy to sit on her knee, which to Archie sounded very grand and delightful–she was soft to his shoulder, and her cheek was soft to his. But when he sat on his father’s knee, he felt a hard firm substance behind him, and the contrast was similar to the contrast between his mother’s soft cushions and his father’s leather-clad chairs. And his father had a hard bristly cheek on which to receive Archie’s goodnight kiss. Judged by the standards of pleasure and luxury it was not nearly as nice as his mother’s, but it gave him, however great need there was for caution, a sense of identity with himself. He was of that species….”

Wys: Hier heeft my Roozemond bescheiden.

‘k Moet op; ’t word licht. ‘k Heb nieuwe kragten

‘k Bevind my aanstonds in het midden
Van Kindren, in een groot geweld.
‘k Beveel ons U: dit is myn bidden;
Gy zyt meest op het hart gesteld.

‘k Heb geen Bidkamer, ‘k heb geen Boeken,
Ik heb geen tyd, om zo alleen
Al myne pligten te doorzoeken,
Maar doe myn werk altoos te vreên.

Al kan ik dus geen kamer sluiten,
Als andren doen tot hun gebed;

Voor my en voor myn huisgezin;
Ik zal met u den dag beginnen:
‘k Wagt van uw zegen myn gewin.

‘k Heb gister avond nog gelezen:
(Gelukkig zo ik hier op let!)
‘Te vreden zyn, is dankbaar wezen;

Ik dank u voor myn gunstig lot;
En denk, in al myn aardschen slommer,
Aan Dood, aan de Eeuwigheid, aan God.
