September

I, from a window where the Meuse is wide,
Looked eastward out to the September night;
The men that in the hopeless battle died
Rose, and deployed, and stationed for the fight;
A brumal army, vague and ordered large
For mile on mile by some pale general,-
I saw them lean by companies to the charge,
But no man living heard the bugle-call.

And fading still, and pointing to their scars,
They fled in lessening clouds, where gray and high
Dawn lay along the heaven in misty bars;
But watching from that eastern casement, I
Saw the Republic splendid in the sky,
And round her terrible head the morning stars.

October

Look, how those steep woods on the mountain’s face
Burn, burn against the sunset; now the cold
Invades our very noon: the year’s grown old,
Mornings are dark, and evenings come apace.
The vines below have lost their purple grace,
And in Forreze the white wrack backward rolled,
Hangs to the hills tempestuous, fold on fold,
And moaning gusts make desolate all the place.

Mine host the month, at thy good hostelry,
Tired limbs I’ll stretch and steaming beast I’ll tether;
Pile on great logs with Gascon hand and free,
And pour the Gascon stuff that laughs at weather;
Swell your tough lungs, north wind, no whit care we,
Singing old songs and drinking wine together.

For Penny and David Cabot

The Mountain

This is ravens’ territory, skulls, bones,
The marrow of these boulders supervised
From the upper air: I stand alone here
And seem to gather children about me,
A collection of picnic things, my voice
Filling the district as I call their names.

The Path

With my first step I dislodge the mallards
Whose necks strain over the bog to where
Kittiwakes scrape the waves: then, the circle
Widening, lapwings, curlews, snipe until
I am left with only one swan to nudge
To the far side of its gradual disdain.

The Strand

I discover, remaindered from yesterday,
Cattle tracks, a sanderling’s tiny trail,
The footprints of the children and my own
Linking the dunes to the water’s edge,
Reducing to sand the dry shells, the toe
And fingernail parings of the sea.

April

Die Welt riecht süß
nach Gestern.
Düfte sind dauerhaft.

Du öffnest das Fenster.
Alle Frühlinge
kommen herein mit diesem.

Frühling der mehr ist
als grüne Blätter.
Ein Kuß birgt alle Küsse.

Immer dieser glänzend glatte
Himmel über der Stadt,

Du weißt, der Winter

sind nichts, was umbringt.

Die Luft riecht heute süß
nach Gestern –
das süß nach Heute roch.

Uit: Sister Carrie

„What, pray, is a few hours—a few hundred miles? She looked at the little slip bearing her sister’s address and wondered. She gazed at the green landscape, now passing in swift review, until her swifter thoughts replaced its impression with vague conjectures of what Chicago might be.
When a girl leaves her home at eighteen, she does one of two things. Either she falls into saving hands and becomes better, or she rapidly assumes the cosmopolitan standard of virtue and becomes worse. Of an intermediate balance, under the circumstances, there is no possibility. The city has its cunning wiles, no less than the infinitely smaller and more human tempter. There are large forces which allure with all the soulfulness of expression possible in the most cultured human. The gleam of a thousand lights is often as effective as the persuasive light in a wooing and fascinating eye. Half the undoing of the unsophisticated and natural mind is accomplished by forces wholly superhuman. A blare of sound, a roar of life, a vast array of human hives, appeal to the astonished senses in equivocal terms. Without a counsellor at hand to whisper cautious interpretations, what falsehoods may not these things breathe into the unguarded ear! Unrecognised for what they are, their beauty, like music, too often relaxes, then weakens, then perverts the simpler human perceptions.
Caroline, or Sister Carrie, as she had been half affectionately termed by the family, was possessed of a mind rudimentary in its power of observation and analysis. Self-interest with her was high, but not strong. It was, nevertheless, her guiding characteristic. Warm with the fancies of youth, pretty with the insipid prettiness of the formative period, possessed of a figure promising eventual shapeliness and an eye alight with certain native intelligence, she was a fair example of the middle American class—two generations removed from the emigrant. Books were beyond her interest—knowledge a sealed book. In the intuitive graces she was still crude. She could scarcely toss her head gracefully.“

[Month of) July

The Kings come riding back from the Crusade,
The purple Kings and all their mounted men;
They fill the street with clamorous cavalcade;
The Kings have broken down the Saracen.
Singing a great song of the eastern wars,
In crimson ships across the sea they came,
With crimson sails and diamonded dark oars,
That made the Mediterranean flash with flame.

And reading how, in that far month, the ranks
Formed on the edge of the desert, armoured all,
I wish to God that I had been with them
When the first Norman leapt upon the wall,
And Godfrey led the foremost of the Franks,
And young Lord Raymond stormed Jerusalem.

[Month of] August

The soldier month, the bulwark of the year,
That never more shall hear such victories told;
He stands apparent with his heaven-high spear,
And helmeted of grand Etruscan gold.
Our harvest is the bounty he has won,
The loot his fiery temper takes by strength.
Oh! Paladin of the Imperial sun!
Oh! crown of all the seasons come at length!

This is sheer manhood; this is Charlemagne,
When he with his wide host came conquering home
From vengeance under Roncesvalles ta’en.
Or when his bramble beard flaked red with foam
Of bivouac wine-cups on the Lombard plain,
What time he swept to grasp the world at Rome.

Uit: The Vagrant And Other Tales

” In the days of old Lang Syne! ” The forest soughed. . . . The forest always soughed, now with a murmur calm and prolonged, like the echo of distant ringing, and again soft and gentle, like a song without words or a dim memory of the past. It always soughed, for it was an old and mighty forest, still untouched by the saw or the axe of woodman or trader. The tall, centennial pines, with their vast trunks, stood like threatening warriors, and their green tops formed a massive wall. Everything below was still; the air was filled with an odor of resin. Ferns of vivid hues pushed their way through the carpet of pine-needles with which the ground was strewn, expanding luxuriantly and resting thereon, like a soft fringe, without stirring a leaf. In the damp corners the greengrass shot up its tall and slender stems, and the white clover, heavy with bloom, drooped its languid head; while over all soughed the forest, with long-drawn, indistinguishable sighs. Now the sighs were growing deeper and louder; and as I rode along the forest path, although I could not see the sky, I judged by the moaning of the trees that heavy clouds were slowly rising above it. It was late in. the afternoon. Here and there a sunbeam, made its way, but in the dense woods the twilight was spreading rapidly. Evidently a storm was brewing. All plans for hunting must be given up for to-day. The storm might overtake me before I could find shelter for the night. My horse snorted and pricked up his ears, when, striking his hoofs against the naked roots, he heard the sharp sound of the forest echo, and he quickened his pace as he drew near a familiar hut. A dog barked, and whitewashed walls glimmered through the trees.

Uit: Chita. A Memory of Last Island

„Thirty years ago, Last Island lay steeped in the enormous light of even such magical days. July was dying;—for weeks no fleck of cloud had broken the heaven’s blue dream of eternity; winds held their breath; slow wavelets caressed the bland brown beach with a sound as of kisses and whispers. To one who found himself alone, beyond the limits of the village and beyond the hearing of its voices,—the vast silence, the vast light, seemed full of weirdness. And these hushes, these transparencies,

do not always inspire a causeless apprehension: they are omens sometimes—omens of coming tempest. Nature,— incomprehensible Sphinx!—before hermightiest bursts of rage, ever puts forth her divinest witchery, makes more manifest her awful beauty. . . .

But in that forgotten summer the witchery lasted many long days,—days born in rose-light, buried in gold. It was the height of the season. The long myrtle-shadowed village was thronged with its summer population;—the big hotel could hardly accommodate all its guests;—the bathing-houses were too few for the crowds who flocked to the water morning and evening. There were diversions for all,—hunting and fishing parties, yachting excursions, rides, music, games, promenades.

Carriage wheels whirled flickering along the beach, seaming its smoothness noiselessly, as if muffled. Love wrote its dreams upon the sand. . . .

. . . Then one great noon, when the blue abyss of day seemed to yawn over the world more deeply than ever before, a sudden change touched the quicksilver smoothness of the waters—the swaying shadow of a vast motion.“

Inselmittag

Wir sind Fremde
von Insel
zu Insel.
Aber am Mittag, wenn uns das Meer
bis ins Bett steigt
und die Vergangenheit
wie Kielwasser
an unsern Fersen abläuft
und das tote Meerkraut am Strand
zu goldenen Bäumen wird,
dann hält uns kein Netz
der Erinnerung mehr,
wir gleiten
hinaus,
und die abgesteckten
Meerstraßen der Fischer
und die Tiefenkarten
gelten nicht
für uns.

Gleichgewicht

Wir gehen
jeder für sich
den schmalen Weg
üst ohne Angst –
im Takt unsres Herzens,
als seien wir beschützt,
solange die Liebe
nicht aussetzt.

So gehen wir
zwischen Schmetterlingen und Vögeln
in staunendem Gleichgewicht
zu einem Morgen von Baumwipfeln
– grün, gold und blau –
und zu dem Erwachen
der geliebten Augen.

Alle meine Schiffe

Alle meine Schiffe
haben die Häfen vergessen
und meine Füße den Weg.
Es wird nicht gesät und nicht geerntet
denn es ist keine Vergangenheit
und keine Zukunft,
kaum eine Bühne im Tag.
Nur der kleine
zärtliche Abstand
zwischen dir und mir,
den du nicht verminderst.

Laertes

When he found Laertes alone on the tidy terrace, hoeing
Around a vine, disreputable in his garden duds,
Patched and grubby, leather gaiters protecting his shins
Against brambles, gloves as well, and, to cap it all,
Sure signs of his deep depression, a gostskin duncher,
Odysseus sobbed in the shade of a pear-tree for his father
So old and pathetic that all he wanted then and there
Was to kiss him and hug him and blurt out the whole story,
But the whole story is one catalogue and then another,
So he waited for images from that formal garden,
Evidence of a childhood spent traipsing after his father
And asking for everything he saw, the thirteen pear-trees,
Ten apple-trees, forty fig-trees, the fifty rows of vines
Ripening at different times for a continuous supply,
Until Laertes recognised his son and, weak at the knees,
Dizzy, flung his arms around the neck of great Odysseus
Who drew the old man fainting to his breast and held him there
And cradled like driftwood the bones of his dwindling father.

Badger
For Raymond Piper

1
Pushing the wedge of his body
Between cromlech and stone circle,
He excavates down mine shafts
And back into the depths of the hill.

His path straight and narrow
And not like the fox’s zig-zags,
The arc of the hare who leaves
A silhouette on the sky line.

Night’s silence around his shoulders,
His face lit by the moon, he
Manages the earth with his paws,
Returns underground to die.

Uit: The Last Titan (Biografie door Jerome Loving)

“Whitman is the true precursor of American literature in the twentieth century, but he wrote poetry instead of prose—many denied it even the claim to poetry—which kept it out of general circulation among popular readers during his lifetime. But Sister Carrie was a novel, a genre more accessible to the average reader, especially women, who made up the great majority of American readers at the end of the nineteenth century. One of them was allegedly Mrs. Frank Doubleday.

Dreiser probably began Sister Carrie in late September of 1899, shortly after returning to New York City. Henry returned, too, again leaving Maude and Dottie behind, to resume for the next month or so his residence with the Dreisers, and he either continued or began to write A Princess of Arcady. While Henry imagined a conventional romance in which the heroine is sent to a convent school to preserve her innocence until the proper time for marriage, Dreiser began his own fable about an American princess, “two generations removed from the emigrant,” who rules only in her dreams and loses her innocence at almost the first opportunity. Henry wrote an idyll about a “nun” whose youthful sexuality is never violated, while Dreiser wrote a novel about a sister who commits adultery. It is generally thought that Dreiser was thinking exclusively of his sister Emma and not even remotely—or ironically—about a nun when he gave his Carrie the title of “Sister” at the top of his page, but Henry’s use of nuns and a convent in his book may have had an associative influence. Dreiser’s romantic chapter titles, which were added between the first draft and the revision published by Doubleday, suggest the moral contrast and underscore the departure of this gritty tale of two cities from the Victorian fiction of its day.”

“For the genius of Cranmer in this supreme art of his—the fashioning of ryhthmic English prose—was not of that spontaneous kind which produces great sentences or pages in flashes, as it were, unplanned, surging up of themselves in the midst of lesser matter; he was not among prose writers what such men as Shakespeare or Ronsard are among the poets—voluminous, uneven, and without conscious effort compelled to produce splendours in a process of which they are themselves not aware.  He was, on the contrary, a jeweller in prose, a man who sat down deliberately to write in a particular way when there was need or opportunity for it, but who, on general occasions, would write as might any other man.  We have a great mass of what he did, in long letters to [Anne] Boleyn, to the King and to [Thomas] Cromwell, careful arguments transcribed at length in his disputations, as in the famous one with [Bishop Stephen] Gardiner on the Real Presence; it is always scholar’s work, careful and lucid.  But when he sits down to produce a special effect all changes.  He begins to carve with skill and in the hardest material.  He is absorbed in a particular task, creative, highly conscious, and to his sense of beauty vastly satisfactory. . . .

He was not of those whom a fountain of creation fills and who declaim, as it were, great matter.  His art was of the kind which must work very slowly and in secret, isolated; his sentences when he desired to produce his effect must be perfected in detail, polished, lingered over, rearranged, until they had become so that one could them with the finger-nail and find no roughness.”

Uit: The Old Bell-Ringer

“The old man went to the opening in the tower and leaned on the banister. In the darkness below, around the church, he made out the village cemetery in which the old crosses with their outstretched arms seemed to protect the ill-kept graves. Over these bowed here and there a few leafless birch trees. The aromatic odor of young buds, wafted to Mikheyich from below, brought with it a feeling of the melancholy of eternal sleep.

Where would he be a year hence? Would he again climb to this height, beneath the brass bell to awaken the slumbering night with its metallic peal, or would he be lying in a dark corner of the graveyard, under a cross? God knows!… He was prepared; in the meantime God granted him the happiness of greeting the holiday once more.

“Glory be to God!” His lips whispered the customary formula as his eyes looked up to the heaven bright with a million twinkling stars and made the sign of the cross.

“Mikheyich, ay, Mikheyich!” called out to him the tremulous voice of an old man. The aged sexton gazed up at the belfry, shading his unsteady, tear-dimmed eyes with his hand, trying to see Mikheyich.

“What do you want? Here I am,” replied the bell-ringer, looking down from the belfry. “Can’t you see me?”

“No, I can’t. It must be time to ring. What do you say?”

Both looked at the stars. Myriads of God’s lights twinkled on high. The fiery Wagoner was above them. Mikheyich meditated.

“No, not yet a while. … I know when. …”

Indeed he knew. He did not need a watch. God’s stars would tell him when. … Heaven and earth, the white cloud gently floating in the sky, the dark forest with its indistinct murmur and the rippling of the stream enveloped by the darkness—all that was familiar to him, part of him. Not in vain had he spent his life here.

“It is with the delicious surprise of the first journey through Japanese streets—unable to make one’s kuruma-runner understand anything but gestures, frantic gestures to roll on anywhere, everywhere, since all is unspeakably pleasurable and new—that one first receives the real sensation of being in the Orient, in this Far East so much read of, so long dreamed of, yet, as the eyes bear witness, heretofore all unknown. There is a romance even in the first full consciousness of this rather commonplace fact; but for me this consciousness is transfigured inexpressibly by the divine beauty of the day. There is some charm unutterable in the morning air, cool with the coolness of Japanese spring and wind-waves from the snowy cone of Fuji; a charm perhaps due rather to softest lucidity than to any positive tone—an atmospheric limpidity, extraordinary, with only a suggestion of blue in it, through which the most distant objects appear focused with amazing sharpness. The sun is only pleasantly warm; the jinrikisha, or kuruma, is the most cosy little vehicle imaginable; and the street-vistas, as seen above the dancing white mushroom-shaped hat of my sandaled runner, have an allurement of which I fancy that I could never weary.

Elfish everything seems; for everything as well as everybody is small, and queer, and mysterious: the little houses under their blue roofs, the little shop-fronts hung with blue, and the smiling little people in their blue costumes. The illusion is only broken by the occasional passing of a tall foreigner, and by divers shop-signs bearing announcements in absurd attempts at English. Nevertheless, such discords only serve to emphasize reality; they never materially lessen the fascination of the funny little streets.”

Wounds

Here are two pictures from my father’s head–
I have kept them like secrets until now:
First, the
Ulster Division at the Somme

Going over the top with ‘Fuck the Pope!’
‘No Surrender!’: a boy about to die,
Screaming ‘Give ‘em one for the
Shankill!’
Wilder than
Gurkhas
‘ were my father’s words
Of admiration and bewilderment.
Next comes the
London-Scottish
padre
Resettling kilts with his
swagger-stick
,
With a stylish backhand and a prayer.
Over a landscape of dead buttocks
My father followed him for fifty years.
At last, a belated casualty,
He said–lead traces flaring till they hurt–
‘I am dying for King and Country, slowly.’
I touched his hand, his thin head I touched.

Now, with military honours of a kind,
With his badges, his medals like rainbows,
His spinning compass, I bury beside him
Three teenage soldiers, bellies full of
Bullets and Irish beer, their flies undone.
A packet of
Woodbines I throw in,
A
lucifer, the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Paralysed as heavy guns put out
The
night-light
in a nursery for ever:
Also a bus-conductor’s uniform–
He collapsed beside his carpet-slippers
Without a murmur, shot through the head
By a shivering boy who wandered in
Before they could turn the television down
Or tidy away the supper dishes.
To the children, to a bewildered wife,
I think ‘Sorry Missus’ was what he said.

Last Requests

I

Your batman thought you were buried alive,
Left you for dead and stole your pocket watch
And cigarette case, all he could salvage
From the grave you so nearly had to share
With an unexploded shell. But your lungs
Surfaced to take a long remembered drag,
Heart contradicting as an epitaph
The two initials you had scratched on gold.

II

I thought you blew a kiss before you died,
But the bony fingers that waved to and fro
Were asking for a Woodbine, the last request
Of many soldiers in your company,
The brand you chose to smoke for forty years
Thoughtfully, each one like a sacrament.
I who bought peppermints and grapes only
Couldn’t reach you through the oxygen tent.

Landen dürfen

Ich nannte mich
ich selber rief mich
mit dem Namen einer Insel.

es ist der Name eines Sonntags
einer geträumten Insel.

Kolumbus erfand die Insel
an einem Weihnachtssonntag.

Sie war eine Küste
etwas zum Landen
man kann sie betreten
die Nachtigallen singen an Weihnachten dort.

Nennen Sie sich, sagte einer
als ich in Europa an Land ging,
mit dem Namen Ihrer Insel.

Ziehende Landschaft

unserer Mutter.

Exil

Der sterbende Mund
müht sich
um das richtig gesprochene
Wort
einer fremden
Sprache.

Wisdom

While honouring the grape’s ruby nectar,

   All sportingly, laughingly gay;

We determined — I, Silvia, and Hector,

To drive old dame Wisdom away.

“O my children, take care,” said the beldame,

“Attend to these counsels of mine:

Get not tipsy! for danger is seldom

Remote from the goblet of wine.”

“With thee in his company, no man

Can err,” said our wag with a wink;

“But come, thou good-natured old woman,

There’s a drop in the goblet — and drink!”

She frowned — but her scruples soon twisting,

   Consented: — and smilingly said:

“So polite — there’s indeed no resisting,

   For Wisdom was never ill-bred.”

She drank but continued her teaching:

“Let the wise from indulgence refrain;”

And never gave over her preaching,

But to say, “Fill the goblet again.”

And she drank, and she totter’d, but still she

Was talking and shaking her head:

Muttered “temperance” — “prudence” — until she

Was carried by Love to bed.

Uit: A Hoosier Holiday

In grey or rainy weather the aspect of the whole place was solemn, historic. In snowy or stormy weather, it took on a kind of patriarchal significance. When the wind was high these thick, tall trees swirled and danced in a wild ecstasy. When the snow was heavy they bent low with their majestic plumes of white. Underneath them was a floor of soft brown pine needles as soft and brown as a rug. We could gather basket upon basket of resiny cones with which to start our morning fires. In spring and summer these trees were full of birds, the grackle of blackbird particularly, for these seemed to preempt the place early in March and were inclined to fight others for possession. Nevertheless, robins, bluebirds, wrens and other of the less aggressive feathers built their nests here. I could always tell when spring was certainly at hand by the noise made by a tree full of newly arrived blackbirds on some chill March morning. Though snow might still be about, they were strutting about on the bits of lawn we were able to maintain between groups of pines, or hopping on the branches of trees, rasping out their odd speech.”

The Undarkened Window

In t
he daytime, I see him in the street

in a dark suit,

shaved,

combed,

wearing a tie –

at night the light shines in his window

across from my window.

A survivor

of Hitler’s gas chambers,

he sails at night around

his undarkened window –

a wandering ship

on oceans of darkness,

and no port

allows it to enter,

so it may anchor

and darken.

Only in the mornings

does it go out,

the sickly yellow light

in his window.

Pas als men merkt dat men daarvoor ’t geboortehuis verlaten moet, dan ziet men ervan af.

Beau Coin of Belle Vallée of Schöner Gegend.

Die Kleider

Die Kleider, die du an mir sahst,

werden nie alt.

In allen Farben des Regenbogens

blühn sie in meinem Schrank.

Das lila Kleid flüstert mit dem grünen

ein grünes grasiges Geheimnis,

das rosa schmiegt sich an das gelbe

mit Blüten am Saum.

Weggeschoben in eine Schrankecke,

die Ärmel über die Schultern gelegt,

träumt mein blaues Kleid von dir

I Remember

Dedicated to Jacob Patt

I remember –
It was a day
like today –
I was alone in a park.
The benches were empty and abandoned,
as if they knew
that never again
would anyone sit on them.
Slowly the leaves were falling,
counting the autumns on the earth.
Silence was all around,
as before a storm.
In what country was that?
In what city?
It was a temple
without a God
and without worshipers.
And how did I save myself
from there?

SWANS MATING

Even now I wish that you had been there
Sitting beside me on the riverbank:
The cob and his pen sailing in rhythm
Until their small heads met and the final
Heraldic moment dissolved in ripples.

This was a marriage and a baptism,
A holding of breath, nearly a drowning,
Wings spread wide for balance where he trod,
Her feathers full of water and her neck
Under the water like a bar of light.

TWO PHEASANTS

As though from a catastrophic wedding reception
The cock pheasant in his elaborate waistcoat
Exploded over cultivated ground to where
A car in front of our car had crushed his bride.

I got the picture in no time in my wing-mirror
As in a woodcut by Hokusai who highlighted
The head for me, the white neck-ring and red wattles,
The long coppery tail, the elegance and pain.

Uit: The Old Bell-Ringer

“It was growing dark.

The tiny village, nestling by the distant stream, in a pine forest, was merged in that twilight peculiar to starry spring nights, when the fog, rising from the earth, deepens the shadows of the woods and fills the open spaces with a silvery blue mist. … Everything was still, pensive and sad. The village quietly slumbered.

The dark outlines of the wretched cabins were barely visible; here and there lights glimmered; now and then you could hear a gate creak; or a dog would suddenly bark and then stop. Occasionally, out of the dark, murmuring forest emerged the figure of a pedestrian, or that of a horseman; or a cart would jolt by. These were the inhabitants of lone forest hamlets going to their church for the great spring holiday.

The church stood on a gentle hill in the center of the village. The ancient belfry, tall and murky, was lost in the blue sky.

The creaking of the staircase could be heard as the old bell-ringer Mikheyich mounted to the belfry, and his little lantern, suspended in mid-air, looked like a star in space.

It was difficult for the old man to climb the staircase. His leg served him badly, and his eyes saw but dimly. … An old man like him should have been at rest by now, but God spared him from death. He had buried his sons and his grandsons; he had accompanied old men and young men to their resting place, but he still lived on. ’Twas hard. Many the times he had greeted the spring holiday, and he could not remember how often he had waited in that very belfry the appointed hour. And now God had again willed that…”

Song of an old hussar

Where are the friends of former years,

The old original hussars?

Where is the chief who ruled his peers,

My boon companions of the wars?

Veterans, I remember all,

How you grew mellow without stint,

Your places round the fire recall,

And noses of a purple tint,

The soldiers’ caps thrown lightly back,

The jackets reaching to your knees,

Sabres, and sabretaches slack,

The hay whereon you lay at ease.

Holding black pipes between your teeth,

You spare your speech; the smoke ascends

Or, choosing tortuous paths beneath

Your muffled coats, its way extends.

No single word, much columned smoke;

None stirs, and all to silence keep;

Each drinks and, wrapped within his cloak,

Stretches and quickly goes to sleep.

Scarecely appears the break of day,

Ere each is scudding o’er the field,

With cap askew in brave display,

Lets his pelisse to breezes yield.

His steed is quivering with delight,

His sabre whistles, cleaves a foe;

With battle done, his appetite

Demands a chance itself to show.

But what distresses now my view?

Fear rules hussars of modish shape,

Ill-uniformed, in high boots new,

They pirouette and work escape.

They sagely speak, wiseacres look,

Believe the tought of  love absurd;

They like Jomini and his book,

Concerning vodka say no word.

Where are my friends of former years,

The real, superlative hussars?

Where is the chief who ruled his peers,

My boon companions of the wars?

Ausbruch von hier – Für Paul Celan, Peter Szondi, Jean Améry, die nicht weiterleben wollten

Das Seil
nach Häftlingsart aus Bettüchern geknüpft
die Bettücher auf denen ich geweint habe
ich winde es um mich
Taucherseil
um meinen Leib
ich springe ab
ich tauche
weg vom Tag
hindruch
tauche ich auf
auf der andern Seite der Erde
Dort will ich
freier atmen
dort will ich ein Alphabet erfinden
von tätigen Buchstaben.

Mit leichtem Gepäck

Gewöhn dich nicht.
Du darfst dich nicht gewöhnen.
Eine Rose ist eine Rose.
Aber ein Heim
ist kein Heim.

Sag dem Schoßhund Gegenstand ab
der dich anwedelt
aus den Schaufenstern.
Er irrt. Du

Hier

Ungewünschte Kinder
meine Worte
frieren.

Kommt
ich will euch
auf meine warmen
Fingerspitzen
setzen
Schmetterlinge im Winter.

Die Sonne
blaß wie ein Mond
scheint auch hier
in diesem Land
wo wir das Fremdsein
zu Ende kosten.

“When Caroline Meeber boarded the afternoon train for Chicago, her total outfit consisted of a small trunk, a cheap imitation alligator-skin satchel, a small lunch in a paper box, and a yellow leather snap purse, containing her ticket, a scrap of paper with her sister’s address in Van Buren Street, and four dollars in money. It was in August, 1889. She was eighteen years of age, bright, timid, and full of the illusions of ignorance and youth. Whatever touch of regret at parting characterised her thoughts, it was certainly not for advantages now being given up. A gush of tears at her mother’s farewell kiss, a touch in her throat when the cars clacked by the flour mill where her father worked by the day, a pathetic sigh as the familiar green environs of the village passed in review, and the threads which bound her so lightly to girlhood and home were irretrievably broken.
To be sure there was always the next station, where one might descend and return. There was the great city, bound more closely by these very trains which came up daily. Columbia City was not so very far away, even once she was in Chicago.”
