Uit:My Left Foot

“Very worried by this, mother told my father her fears, and they decided to seek medical advice without any further delay. I was a little over a year old when they began to take me to hospitals and clinics, convinced that there was something definitely wrong with me, something which they could not understand or name, but which was very real and disturbing.
Almost every doctor who saw and examined me, labelled me a very interesting but also a hopeless case. Many told mother very gently that I was mentally defective and would remain so. That was a hard blow to a young mother who had already reared five healthy children. The doctors were so very sure of themselves that mothers faith in me seemed almost an impertinence. They assured her that nothing could be done for me.
She refused to accept this truth, the inevitable truthh as it then seemed”that I was beyond cure, beyond saving, even beyond hope. She could not and would not believe that I was an imbecile, as the doctors told her. She had nothing in the world to go by, not a scrap of evidence to support her conviction that, though my body was crippled, my mind was not. In spite of all the doctors and specialists told her, she would not agree. I don’t believe she knew why she just knew without feeling the smallest shade of doubt.
Finding that the doctors could not help in any way beyond telling her not to place her trust in me, or, in other words, to forget I was a human creature, rather to regard me as just something to be fed and washed and then put away again, mother decided there and then to take matters into her own hands. I was her child, and therefore part of the family. No matter how dull and incapable I might grow up to be, she was determined to treat me on the same plane as the others, and not as the ˜queer one” in the back room who was never spoken of when there were visitors present.”

Uit:My Left Foot

“I was born in the Rotunda Hospital, on June 5th, 1932. There were nine children before me and twelve after me, so I myself belong to the middle group. Out of this total of twenty-two, seventeen lived, but four died in infancy, leaving thirteen still to hold the family fort.
Mine was a difficult birth, I am told. Both mother and son almost died. A whole army of relations queued up outside the hospital until the small hours of the morning, waiting for news and praying furiously that it would be good.
After my birth Mother was sent to recuperate for some weeks and I was kept in the hospital while she was away. I remained there for some time, without name, for I wasn’t baptized until my mother was well enough to bring me to church.
It was Mother who first saw that there was something wrong with me. I was about four months old at the time. She noticed that my head had a habit of falling backward whenever she tried to feed me. She attempted to correct this by placing her hand on the back of my neck to keep it steady. But when she took it away, back it would drop again. That was the first warning sign. Then she became aware of other defects as I got older. She saw that my hands were clenched nearly all of the time and were inclined to twine behind my back; my mouth couldn’t grasp the teat of the bottle because even at that early age my jaws would either lock together tightly, so that it was impossible for her to open them, or they would suddenly become limp and fall loose, dragging my whole mouth to one side. At six months I could not sit up without having a mountain of pillows around me. At twelve months it was the same.”

Kriegsbeginn: Actaeon 1, Nach Pound
(für Ute Langanky)

Ein bild der Lethe,
und den feldern
Voll stumpfen lichts,
doch golden,
Graue kliffs,
und unter ihnen
Ein meer
Strenger als granit,
unruhig, niemals aufgebend;
Hohe gestalten
mit den gesten von göttern,
Gefährliche aussichten;
Und einer sagte:
»Das ist Actaeon.«
Actaeon mit den beinschienen von gold!
Über helle wiesen,
Übers überlegene gesicht dieses felds,
Unruhig, immer in bewegung,
Heere eines antiken volks,
Das stumme gefolge.

Actaeon 2

A.F.TH. van der Heijden

We were invited to the Scanlon estate. John Scanlon was a publicist, a very big one, in all senses of the word. He was a publicist for Bill Clinton, actually, during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, and he had this huge house in Ireland that he was inviting a group of us over to for this birthday bash. He was a big gourmand, and he perished in front of the TV after a big meal just two weeks before we were supposed to go, just died. His wife said, “Come on over anyway, John would have loved it.”

So over we went, in spite of his death, about twelve of us, five children — my niece, my stepdaughter, and my two sons, and Tara Newman’s son — and the rest adults, and the house was big enough to accommodate that without any confusion. I have to say that this place, exquisite stone manor that it was, reminded me a little bit of The Shining. It was disconcerting, actually. It was set right in the middle of these woods and fields, and the kids went running in the fields with no fear of deer ticks for the first time in a long time. The woods looked like Harry Potter woods; they were very old, it was about twelve acres of land, and all very spooky. It was in the town of Mort, which was even more of a spooky name, in the county of Offaly. O-f-f-a-l-y.

We arrived on the longest day of the year, June 21, 2001, and all went to celebrate with a treasure hunt. In the morning, the following day, the next-longest day of the year, Barbara Leary was down in the kitchen — Barbara Leary was the ex-wife of Timothy Leary and she was one of the guests there — and I was talking with her and she said that she’d dreamt that I’d done a new monologue, and I said, “No, there’s nothing on the table, really, nothing new. My life is without crisis and usually they’re based on crisis, and I don’t have anything planned at all. Things are going smoothly.”

What Her absence Means

It means

no madcap delight will intrude

into the calm flow of my working hours

no ecstatic errors perple

my literary pretensions.

It means

there will be time enough for thought

undistracted by brown peril of eye

and measured litany of routine deeds

undone by the ghost of a scent.

It means

my neglect of the Sonnets will cease

and Homer come into battle once more.

I might even find turgid old Tennyson

less of a dead loss now.

It means

there will be whole days to spare

for things important to a man –

like learning to live without a woman

without altogether losing one’s mind.

It means

there is no one now to read my latest poem

with veiled unhurried eyes

putting my nerves on the feline rack

in silence sheer she-devil hell for me.

It means

there is no silly woman to tell me

‘Take it easy – lie’s long anyway –

don’t drink too much – get plenty of sleep -‘ and other tremendous cliches.

It means

I am less interrupted now with love.

Uit: David Hare’s ‘Stuff Happens’: All the President’s Men in ‘On the Road to Baghdad’

(Bespreking door Ben Brantley in de New York Times, 14 april 2006)

„CONTRARY to what the American politicians of David Hare’s “Stuff Happens” might believe, bigger doesn’t always mean more powerful. The Public Theater’s invigorating new production of Mr. Hare’s journalistic drama about the road to war in Iraq, first mounted with epic proportions at the National Theater in London in 2004, is here conducted on the modest scale of a town-hall meeting. It is as if a telescope, first set up to be looked through at the wrong end, were now righted, changing not composition but perspective.

The characters, who include the sitting American president and British prime minister and many of their cabinet members, feel closer to the audience — not just physically but emotionally. Often, they seem less like destiny-shaping, arbitrary gods than like the ego-trippers in your office. If that means they are too close for comfort, then “Stuff Happens,” which opened last night under the smart, sharp direction of Daniel Sullivan, is doing its job.

Shrinkage may be the best thing that could have happened to Mr. Hare’s quasi-documentary play. When I saw it in London, on the immense stage of the Olivier auditorium at the National, directed by Nicholas Hytner, the play had the marmoreal quality of mythic events carved into a temple frieze.“

Uit: Wie wird Beton zu Gras? — Fast eine Liebesgeschichte

(Bespreking door W. Martin Lüdke in Zeit- Online, 24 augustus 1979)

Was „am 2.

TWIST

                                Voor Rafael Méndez

In het midden van het ravijn

blinken als vissen

de messen uit Albacete,

mooi van vijandelijk bloed.

Een scherp kaartspellicht

knipt in het felle groen

onstuimige paarden

en ruiterprofielen uit.

In de kruin van een olijfboom

wenen twee oude vrouwen.

De stier van de twist

stormt tegen de muren op.

Zwarte engelen brachten

zakdoeken en sneeuwwater mee.

Engelen met grote vleugels

van messen uit Albacete.

Juan Antonio uit Montilla

rolt dood de helling af,

zijn lichaam vol irissen

en granaatappels op zijn slapen.

Nu bestijgt hij een kruis van vuur

op weg naar de dood.

Vergezeld van een guardia civil

komt de rechter langs de olijfgaarden.

Glibberig bloed kermt

sprakeloos slangenlied.

Heren van de guardia civil:

hier gebeurde het oude verhaal.

Vier Romeinen en vijf Carthagers

vonden hier de dood.

De avond dol van vijgenbomen

en van hitsige geluiden

bezwijmt op de gewonde

dijen van de ruiters.

En zwarte engelen vlogen

door de avondlucht.

Engelen met lange vlechten

en harten van olie.

SINT GABRIËL (Sevilla)

                          Voor D. Agustin Viñuales

I

Een knappe jongeling, rank als riet,

brede schouders, slanke taille,

huid van een nachtelijke appel,

droeve mond en grote ogen,

pezen van hitsig zilver,

doolt door de verlaten straat.

Zijn lakleren schoenen

vertrappen de dahlia’s van de wind,

op het dubbele ritme, het lied

van kort en hemels verdriet.

Langs de hele zeekust

staat geen palm die hem evenaart,

noch gekroonde keizer

noch rijzende ster.

Als hij zijn hoofd buigt

naar zijn borst van jaspis,

zoekt de nacht vlakten

om neer te knielen.

De gitaren klinken alleen

voor de Aartsengel Gabriël,

temmer van duifjes

en vijand van treurwilgen.

Sint Gabriël: het kindje weent

in de buik van zijn moeder.

Vergeet niet dat de zigeuners

jou je kledij schonken.

Annuntiata van de Wijzen,

sjofel gekleed maar uitverkoren,

opent de deur voor de ster

die voorbijkwam in haar straat.

De Aartsengel Sint Gabriël

tussen lelie en glimlach,

achterkleinkind van de Giralda,

bracht haar een bezoek.

In zijn geborduurde vest

trillen verborgen krekels.

De sterren van de nacht

veranderden in klokbloemen.

Sint Gabriël: Ziehier

drie nagels van vreugde.

Je schittering opent jasmijnen

op mijn gloeiend gezicht.

God zegent je, Annuntiata.

Verrukkelijke Moriaanse.

Je zal een zoon baren mooier

dan de halmen van de wind.

O, Sint Gabriël, mijn oogappel!

Mijn allerliefste Gabriël!

Je neer te zetten op een stoel

van anjers, dat is mijn droom.

God zegent je, Annuntiata,

sjofel gekleed maar uitverkoren.

Op zijn borst zal je zoon

een maanvlek en drie wonden dragen.

O, Sint Gabriël wat schitter je!

Liefste Gabriël van mijn hart!

Diep in mijn borsten

welt al de lauwe melk.

God zegent je, Annuntiata.

Moeder van honderd koningshuizen.

Dor fonkelen je ogen,

als ruiterlandschappen.

Het kindje zingt in de schoot

van de verbaasde Annunciata.

Drie groene amandelkogels

trillen in zijn stemmetje.

Sint Gabriël klom al

op een ladder ten hemel.

De sterren van de nacht

veranderden in immortellen.

a
ls het gezoogd, gewassen en gestreeld

tussen de ouders wordt verdeeld.

Uit: The Pillars of the Earth

In a broad valley, at the foot of a sloping hillside, beside a clear bubbling stream, Tom was building a house.

The walls were already three feet high and rising fast. The two masons Tom had engaged were working steadily in the sunshine, their trowels going scrape, slap and then tap, tap while their labourer sweated under the weight of the big stone blocks. Tom’s son Alfred was mixing mortar, counting aloud as he scooped sand on to a board. There was also a carpenter, working at the bench beside Tom, carefully shaping a length of beech-wood with an adze.

Alfred was fourteen years old, and tall like Tom. Tom was a head higher than most men, and Alfred was only a couple of inches less, and still growing. They looked alike, too: both had light brown hair and greenish eyes with brown flecks. People said they were a handsome pair. The main difference between them was that Tom had a curly brown beard, whereas Alfred had only a fine blond fluff. The hair on Alfred’s head had been that colour once, Tom remembered fondly. Now that Alfred was becoming a man, Tom wished he would take a more intelligent interest in his work, for he had a lot to learn if he was to be a mason like his father; but so far Alfred remained bored and baffled by the principles of building.“

„It was when she started stripping that everyone realized something was wrong. This was an official White House event. A somewhat boring, completely respectable cruise on the Potomac River to thank everyone in the West Wing for the hard work that had won the election. But it was no longer boring.

Until the woman whipped off her tailored black jacket to reveal a star-spangled bra and a surprisingly elaborate dragon tattoo, the only remarkable thing about this cruise was that it was nineteen months late. The celebratory boat ride had been promised long ago, in the first month of our new administration, but no one minded that the business of running the country had continuously delayed its actual launch. Victory was prize enough—who needed a cruise?

I tore my eyes away from the increasingly explicit show to scan the crowd for RG. He’d gone below deck to take a call from President Wye, and I was relieved that he still seemed to be there, unaware of these antics. He was the vice president, and as a member of the White House staff, one of my duties was to protect him from public embarrassment whenever possible. That job had become significantly harder in the last thirty seconds.“

„HE STOOD THERE AND WAITED. He was good at that. There was no hurry. There was plenty of time. He always had time. He was a punctual and polite person, and that was why he was standing there, buying a gift for his hostess. Politeness was an emotion- could one call it an emotion, he wondered? that was how he regarded it, certainly-an emotion that he both feared and understood.

There was only one woman in front of him in the off-licence, and she was certainly in no hurry either. She had not even got round to asking for anything yet, because she was too busy telling the man behind the counter about her granddaughter. Two weeks old, this child was, and the lady had just finished knitting her a pram-cover in stripes of white and
blue: it didn’t matter that it was blue and not pink, the daughter had said, she didn’t like pink anyway. The man behind the counter was interested in the story: not merely polite, but interested. One can tell the difference. The woman was short and broad and she was wearing bedroom slippers. What raffish districts of London his friends inhabited: NW1, this was, with all its smart contrasts. They depressed him unbearably, the well-arranged gulfs and divisions of life, the frivolity with which his friends took in these contrasts, the pleasure they took in such abrasions. It appalled him, the complacency with which such friends would describe the advantages of living in a mixed area. As though they licenced seedy old ladies and black men to walk their streets, teaching their children of poverty and despair, as their pet hamsters and guinea pigs taught them of sex and death. He thought of these things, sadly.“

“Oh, dear, oh, dear!” said Henry Clare.

His sister glanced in his direction.

“They are pecking the sick one. They are angry because it is ill.”

“Perhaps it is because they are anxious,” said Megan, looking at the hens in the hope of discerning this feeling.

“It will soon be dead,” said Henry, sitting on a log with his hands on his knees. “It must be having death- pangs now.”

Another member of the family was giving his attention to the fowls. He was earnestly thrusting cake through the wire for their entertainment. When he dropped a piece he picked it up and put it into his own mouth, as though it had been rendered unfit for poultry’s consumption. His elders appeared to view his attitude either in indifference or sympathy.

“What are death-pangs like?” said Henry, in another tone.

“I don’t know,” said his sister, keeping her eyes from the sufferer of them. “And I don’t think the hen is having them. It seems not to know anything.”

Henry was a tall, solid boy of eight, with rough, dark hair, pale, wide eyes, formless, infantine features, and something vulnerable about him that seemed inconsistent with himself.“

“To give you the idea: I’ve noticed, among my friends and acquaintances, that I am, for some reason, one of the few people who positively looks forward to the speeches at weddings. I’d go further. For me, they’re the best part. Perhaps you may think me a cold fish when I admit that I have sometimes watched unmoved as t
he ring was slipped onto the finger, or as the first kiss was taken. (Priests always seem to be saying ‘Not yet.’) But I have never failed to feel a thrill of genuine anticipation when someone calls for silence and rolls out the magic words: ‘Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking’. In one heart at least, the announcement does not cause a sinking. Far from it. Part of my interest is clearly professional. I am, after all, a playwright, and there is nothing more revealing of character than when a proud father or a jealous ex-lover acting as best man is forced to rise to their feet and ‘offer a few words’. Yes, life is theatre, and the rituals which make private matters public are specially delicious. But I also love the prospect that, for once, somebody’s spool is going to be allowed to run and run. Mark it down as optimism, but I cannot help feeling — at least before they speak — that the longer someone goes on, the more you are likely to learn.”

“Stummer, fuhr Breitenstein fort, wie ist das. Du hast’s ge- gehört. Klar? Gehört, und das Gericht will das wissen. Das Gericht will wissen, wo du dieses Kanisterpaket versteckt hast. Los, zeigen. …

„Then there was a surprise. About two weeks after that, Kathie, my wife, gave me a present of a trip to Ireland for the whole family. Kathie’s always coming up with these crazy trips. I remember she took us to the Ice Hotel up in Quebec City where you pay three hundred dollars a night to sleep on a block of ice. So Ireland was cushy. It was a rainy version of the Ice Hotel, I suppose. A little more whimsical, and rainy, and not frozen. I’d been six times before and wanted to go back. It made me laugh in a way that the United States doesn’t. We had rainy times but good times. In spite of the rain it was
a jolly place. I can remember Kathie and me riding bikes in the rain for hours and then coming upon this Irishman leaning against his bicycle with a golf hat on or whatever they wear, and he said, “How are you doing?” I said, “It’s just awful weather, it’s just awful,” and he said, “No, it’s not. It hasn’t gotten cold yet.”

So I like them; they’re optimistic and philosophical. They’re not industrialized, really –there was no industrial revolution — so they drive pretty haphazardly. They don’t have a great relationship to machinery, to say the least. There’s a lot of banging around and the roads are very narrow, and they just get in their cars and go, you know they just put the pedal to the metal and they’re going everywhere, in all directions.“

Sunday Visit

We finally found him

curled up in the chair like a many-wrinkled shell

staring blindly out at nothing

among a gathering of imbecilic fossils

his one good eye fastening fiercely onto life

the hair still sturdy though silver under the old cloth cap.

We finally found him

through all that terrible labyrinth of grey concrete cells

quietly rounding out his days

alone in a morass of moronic camaraderie

his doomed cellmates snoozing and snoring all around

and he with his one good eye defying the shadows.

The tears came then

not soft, but real

the tears of a real man broken by life

groping wildly with gnarled fingers at the straws of life

in that awful room of no life

and the television set blaring forth its banalities

drowning whatever words of comfort our futile tongues could offer.

I had no words for him

no words to span the heartbreak of years

when Samson-like he had stood between us and chaos

bringing to us the small rare trinkets of his love.

I had for him only whiskey

the old bitter gift

the poor tribute of one poorer i
n spirit

than that jaded near-blind half-deaf soul reclining so tamely

in a wicker chair

in a ward of fearful paralysing resignation

a ward full of already dead people

sleeping as the television blared.

Yet the hand that gripped mine spelled out love

and the raw lovely courage of that old landscaped face

put my feeble pity to shame.
