Alloa, Scotland‚December 1988

As she left the driveway and ran down the narrow lane leading to the farm, the silence of that cold winter morning was absolute, save for the crunch of breaking ice as her Doc Martens stamped through the puddles that ran ribbon-like along the rutted track. Tears glistened on her rosy cheeks, but the broad smile on her face showed that they were due to the frigid air nipping at her brown eyes rather than from any feeling of unhappiness. In fact, Claire Barclay could not have been happier. The cold that penetrated her padded jacket and bit at her ears through the woolly hat she wore pulled over her short hennaed hair was counteracted by a tingling warmth flooding from deep within.

Because Claire Barclay was most definitely in love.

Actually, she had been in love with Jonas Fairweather, expert motor mechanic and budding champion rally driver, ever since she had first come to Scotland at the age of eleven, but even though she had spent nearly every day of the next seven years in his company, she had never told him. And he had never said anything to her. They had never even kissed.

So the question that had arisen on so many occasions in Claire’s mind was when to broach this subject, and take their friendship from its present stage into one of deep and everlasting affection.

Today was the day, the time was right. She had finished with school and now had nine months to spend with Jonas before she went on to university at St. Andrews. And it was Christmas, the season of glad tidings. The previous evening, they had been together in the workshop, and they had talked and laughed while he worked on his car until well after eleven o’clock. When she left, his farewell had not been the usual muffled goodbye called out from the depths of the car engine. He had walked with her to the door and stood close, spinning a spanner in his hand, catching her eye and smiling at her. She had sensed then that something was going to happen, but he had just slipped the spanner into the pocket of his coveralls, pushed the door open and said, “See you tomorrow then.”

“Maandag

Onweerstaanbare vrouw! Stel drie lessen per week voor. Zij vindt dit goed!”

Was war denn? Nichts. Haltung, ausgehungertes Schwein, reiß dich zusammen, kriegst meine Faust zu riechen. Gewimmel, welch Gewimmel.

“Serenity could not get over the way the Fiddler walked with legs wide apart. It would have been very impolite to ask the man why he walked that way, and Serenity feared that if he asked his children, they would tell their father, who in turn would report him to his father for punishment. Consequently, he turned to his aunt with the question “Why does the Fiddler have breasts between his legs?”

“Who said the Fiddler had breasts between his legs?”

“Have you never noticed the way he walks?”

“How does he walk?”

“With legs spread wide apart as if he were carrying two jackfruits under his tunic.” He then gave a demonstration, very exaggerated, of the way the man walked.

“It is very funny, but I have never noticed it,” Grandma said, humoring him the way adults did to get out of a sticky situation.

“How could you not have noticed? He has large breasts between his legs.”

“The Fiddler has no breasts between his legs. He is ill. He has got mpanama.”

Serenity’s sisters somehow got wind of the duckwalk and could not resist telling their village peers and schoolmates about the Fiddler, his breasts, and the little clown who portrayed him in silly mimicries. As a result, Serenity got the nickname Mpanama, a ghastly sounding word used out of adult hearing that dropped from gleeful lips with the wet slap of dung hitting hard ground from the rear of a half-constipated cow. Once again he was cured of an obsession, though he continued with his visits to the poor man’s home, faintly hoping to catch him pissing or, better still, squatting on the latrine, for he really wanted to see if the Fiddler’s breasts were as large and smooth as those of the women in his father’s homestead.

At the Gym

This salt-stain spot
marks the place where men
lay down their heads,
back to the bench,

and hoist nothing
that need be lifted
but some burden they’ve chosen
this time: more reps,

more weight, the upward shove
of it leaving, collectively,
this sign of where we’ve been:
shroud-stain, negative

flashed onto the vinyl
where we push something
unyielding skyward,
gaining some power

at least over flesh,
which goads with desire,
and terrifies with frailty.
Who could say who’s

added his heat to the nimbus
of our intent, here where
we make ourselves:
something difficult

lifted, pressed or curled,
Power over beauty,
power over power!
Though there’s something more

tender, beneath our vanity,
our will to become objects
of desire: we sweat the mark
of our presence onto the cloth.

Here is some halo
the living made together.

Uit: A Thousand Peaceful Cities (Vertaald door David Frick)

„The parchment map of the sky slowly took on life. Streams of deep blue air flowed across it. Golden sand poured from the planets. Within the large constellations you could hear music. I awoke in the middle of the night, and in the dark, gropingly, I recorded in my notebook the word “occupation,” which in a moment someone would whisper in the depths of the sleeping house.

In those days I never parted for a moment with my pencil and notebook. The desire, stronger than anything else, to record words and sentences that had just been or would in a moment be uttered, directed my every step, waking and sleeping. I would place the notebook and pencil on the nightstand, and when the golden-black grandfather clock in the entryway rang out the most terrible of hours, two or three in the morning, when the Antichrist himself touched my featherbed with a wet wing, when during every season of the year an infernal silence reigned, I would reach for notebook and pencil and record the word or sentence that brought relief. “Ocupation,” I wrote, but I didn’t feel relief or consolation. From the kitchen came noises unusual for that hour. Someone was moving a chair. Someone knocked delicately, probably at the window, since the panes rattled. Someone said something. Somebody answered. I lit the lamp, and Mr. Trąba’s voice became more distinct, as if intensified by the light. To this day I am absolutely certain that, throughout my entire childhood, I was awakened from sleep either by Mr. Trąba’s voice, or by the sound of the Wittenberg bells in the church tower.“

An Old Man Dies

I am standing in a peasant hut. On the table lies an old man dying.

He’s been there for three days and hasn’t died.

Today there is a small wax candle in his hand. It falls over and goes out, but they light it again.

His relatives stand at the head of the table. Their gaze never wanders from the old man. All around there is the most unbelievable poverty, filth, rags, misery.

The old man is lying with his feet toward the window. His face is dark, tense. His breathing is irregular. At times it seems that he is already dead.

Leaning toward the old woman, his wife, I say softly: “I’ll go get the doctor. He shouldn’t be left lying there on the table for three days.”

The old woman shakes her head.

“Don’t upset him,” she says.

The old man opens his eyes and looks with his bleary gaze at those standing around him. His lips whisper something.

One of the women, young and dark complexioned, bends over the old man and listens silently to his mumblings.

“What’s he want?” asks the old woman.

“He wants titty,” answers the woman. And, quickly unbuttoning her blouse, she takes the old man’s hand and places it on her naked breast.

I see the old man’s face brighten up. Something like a smile spreads across his lips. His breathing becomes more regular and peaceful.

Everyone stands silently, stock-still.

Suddenly the old man’s body is shaken by a violent spasm. His hands fall helplessly. His face becomes stern and absolutely still. He stops breathing. He’s dead.

Immediately the old woman begins to wail. And after she starts they all wail.

I leave the hut.

uns herrlich aufgegangen.
Du Sohn Davids aus Jakobs Stamm,
mein König und mein Bräutigam,
du hälst mein Herz gefangen.
Lieblich, freundlich, schön und prächtig,
groß und mächtig, reich an Gaben,
hoch und wunderbar erhaben.

Du meine Perl, du werte Kron,
wahr Gottes und Marien Sohn,
ein König hochgeboren!
Mein Kleinod du, mein Preis und Ruhm,
dein ewig Evangelium,
das hab ich mir erkoren.
Herr, dich such, hosianna,
himmlisch Manna, das wir essen,
deiner wird ich nie vergessen.

Gieß sehr tief in mein Herz hinein,

Eclair.

„The confetti was a bit of a mystery. Two weeks after the wedding and the multicoloured flakes still kept appearing in every room of the flat. Sometimes they materialized in force under the new king-sized bed or piled up in small drifts behind the television in the sitting room; other times no more than a single fragment floated delicately on toaster thermals around the kitchen. At first, despite the need to vacuum every room on a daily basis, its presence had given Tess a warming sense of fulfilment, a constant reminder of everything that had happened on her Big Day. But now, as she pulled the polo-necked jersey from the top shelf of her wardrobe and a fresh flurry drifted down onto the polished floorboards of the bedroom, she felt it was all becoming a bit of an inconvenience and, like thawing snow, it had been around too long.

Tess had a sneaking suspicion that it was Allan who was to blame for it all. She had visions of him tiptoeing about the flat, sprinkling the tissue petals around like love dust so as to keep the spirit of their wedding day alive. But when she had broached the subject on the previous morning as he stood stark-naked shaving in front of the full-length bathroom mirror, he had rather disappointingly denied the whole idea. “Nice thought, angel”—mouth to the left as he scraped away at the right cheek—“but I’m afraid it’s not been me”—chin pulled down for more scraping under nose—“probably like sand after being on a beach”—turns to look at newly-wedded wife with perfectly formed shaving-foam goatee and gesticulates with razor in hand—“you know, you find it between your toes and in your belly button and other places for days afterwards.”

Uit: The War Of The Saints (Vertaald door Gregory Rabassa)

That day, though the hour was surprisingly late, the Sailor Without a Port was only just entering the far side of the Bay of All Saints, from upriver, under full sail–the sea, a blue mantle, the lover told his beloved. And strangely enough, in the wake of the wind, Maria Clara”s voice was not to be heard trailing off in the throes of a love song.
If it happened that way it was simply because, in addition to the customary cargo of aromatic pineapples, cashews, and mangos, at Santo Amaro da Purificação the sloop had undertaken the responsibility–the mission, we should say–of transporting to the state capital a statue of Saint Barbara of the Thunder, famed for her eternal beauty and miraculous powers. Despite the evident displeasure of the vicar, the parish had agreed to loan the statue, to be displayed at a highly touted religious art exhibit that was being celebrated in prose and verse in the press and among intellectuals: “The cultural event of the year,” as the newspapers proclaimed. In order to carry out this sacred commission, the sloop”s captain, Master Manuel, had had to put off his habitual morning departure, delaying almost twelve hours, but he did it willingly: It would be worth the trouble, and besides, Dona Canô never requested favors, she gave orders.
The vicar felt less upset when he learned that a priest and a nun were also going along; he was young and modern, hair in disarray, wearing civilian clothes, while she was on in years, thin, pale, in a black habit. Divine providence, which never fails, had sent them to accompany the saint.”

Regard

Ton regard couleur de fleuve
Est l’eau docile et qui change

Avec le jour qu’elle abreuve.

Petit matin, Robe d’ange

Un pan du manteau céleste
Sous tes cils, entre les rives

S’est pris. Coule, coule eau vive.

Tes yeux laveront mon âme ;

Swifter is Time

being in something
once or always
stone animal man
story of a color
swift shadow in my chest
time
time badgers me and clashes with me
I ask
I write in the air
with my tongue I write
with my hands and feet I wrote
with my eyes

love
a hostile wave knocks me over
I join words against words
I don’t believe in any of this story
and nevertheless each morning
I invest the absurd brilliance that awakes me
the border of shadow
consciousness
the original trap
sun up
earth down

at the center of the old gesture
of a tree that assaults me
with the innocence of trees
the song
that crosses the night
things
move beautifully toward death
the hour falls apart by itself
far from everything
brilliance and destruction
air in the rift
or rift in the air
neither stone or animal or man
the flower points out the crime
with a silent blush

nobody not even time itself
dare to interrupt time

Uit: What do Druids Believe? door Philip Carr-Gomm

When I was a child I set up an altar in woodland at the bottom of the garden. on it I put a little gold cross wedged into a lump of plasticine. Now, many years later, I realise this was a first expression of leanings towards what I now recognise as druidic Christianity, or Christian Druidism.

I came from a Church of England family and went to a school which worshipped daily in the chapel. Faith foundered however when I studied history at university. I encountered for the first time Christianity’s downside: it had been too much mediated by politics, cruelty, misogyny and fundamentalism, caring little for Jesus’s teachings of tolerance and love; it seemed to encourage exploitation of the natural world and it used the heavy hand of guilt rather than love to corral its followers. Like many others I questioned and fell away.

When I discovered Druidry it was a homecoming into a philosophy which encompassed all that I held dear and it brought me into the western spiritual tradition, something which had been part of my soul without my realising it. My world was animistic. I had always prayed to the one God and all the gods, feeling that that expressed my true beliefs even though I was not comfortable with wholesale paganism.

„The Languor of OFENÍSIA

(whose importance must not be judged by the brevity of her appearance)

“In this year of headlong progress . . .” (FROM AN ILHÉUS NEWSPAPER OF 1925)

OF THE SUN AND THE RAIN AND A SMALL MIRACLE

IN THAT YEAR of 1925, when the idyll of the mulatto girl Gabriela and Nacib the Arab began, the rains continued long beyond the proper and necessary season. Whenever two planters met in the street, they would ask each other, with fear in their eyes and voices:

“How long can this keep up?”

Never had they seen so much rain. It fell day and night, almost without pause.

“One more week and we may lose everything.”

“The entire crop . . .”

“God help us!”

The crop gave promise of being the biggest in history. With cacao prices constantly rising, this would mean greater wealth, prosperity, abundance. It would mean the most expensive schools in the big cities for the colonels’ sons, homes in the town’s new residential sections, luxurious furniture from Rio, grand pianos for the parlors, more and better-stocked stores, a business boom, liquor flowing in the cabarets, more women arriving in the ships, lots of gambling in the bars and hotels–in short, progress, more of the civilization everyone was talking about.

But this unending downpour might ruin everything. And to think that only a few months earlier the colonels were anxiously scanning the sky for clouds, hoping and praying for rain. All through southern Bahia the cacao trees had been shedding their flower, replacing it with the newly born fruit.Without rain this fruit would have soon perished.

The procession on St. George’s Day had taken on the aspect of a desperate mass appeal to the town’s patron saint. The gold-embroidered litter bearing the image of the saint was carried on the shoulders of the town’s most important citizens, the owners of the largest plantations, dressed in the red gowns of the lay brotherhood. This was significant, for the cacao colonels ordinarily avoided religious functions. Attendance at Mass or confession they considered a sign of moral weakness. Church-going, they maintained, was for women“.

Family Secret

I dreamed of a dog

a skinned dog

its body sang its red body whistled

I asked the other one

the one who turns out the light the butcher

what has happened

why are we in the dark

this is a dream you are alone

there is no one else

light does not exist

you are the dog you are the flower which barks

sharpen your tongue sweetly

your sweet black four-legged tongue

dreams scorch the skin of man

human skin burns disappears

only the mutt’s red pulp is clean

the true light dwells in the crust of its eyes

you are the dog

you are the skinned mongrel every night

dream of yourself and let that be enough

I Go Bodiless

I go bodiless from the sun to the shady

water music of living shadow

through the narrowing vagina

which guides me from blindness to light

under the high echoing dome

in this colossal semblance of a nest

I touch the sea belly with my belly

I inspect my body meticulously

poke at my feelings

I am alive

“Pulling into the long broad main street in Aldeburgh she sat still for a moment peering through the windscreen at the shops and houses. It was an attractive place, bright, neat and at the moment very quiet. Clutching her piece of paper she climbed out of the car and approached a man who was standing staring into the window of an antique shop. At his feet a Jack Russell terrier strained at the leash anxious to get to the beach. He glanced at her piece of paper. ‘Crag Path? Through there. Overlooking the sea.’ He smiled. ‘A friend of Edgar Gower’s are you? Delightful man. Delightful.’ Unexpectedly he gave a shout of laughter as he strode away.”
