Vakantiekolonie

Dertien boterhammen had de jongen gegeten;

een natte hoop uit je spijlenbed;

plotselinge versteningen onderbroken spel

De dans duurde zo’n traag kwartier;

Night Is a Cistern

Night is a cistern. Owls sing. Refugees tread meadow roads
with the loud rustling of endless grief.
Who are you, walking in this worried crowd.
And who will you become, who will you be
when day returns, and ordinary greetings circle round.

Night is a cistern. The last pairs dance at a country ball.
High waves cry from the sea, the wind rocks pines.
An unknown hand draws the dawn’s first stroke.
Lamps fade, a motor chokes.
Before us, life’s path, and instants of astronomy.

Mysticism for Beginners

The day was mild, the light was generous.
The German on the café terrace
held a small book on his lap.
I caught sight of the title:
Mysticism for Beginners.
Suddenly I understood that the swallows
patrolling the streets of Montepulciano
with their shrill whistles,
and the hushed talk of timid travelers
from Eastern, so-called Central Europe,
and the white herons standing—yesterday? the day before?—
like nuns in fields of rice,
and the dusk, slow and systematic,
erasing the outlines of medieval houses,
and olive trees on little hills,
abandoned to the wind and heat,
and the head of the Unknown Princess
that I saw and admired in the Louvre,
and stained-glass windows like butterfly wings
sprinkled with pollen,
and the little nightingale practicing
its speech beside the highway,
and any journey, any kind of trip,
are only mysticism for beginners,
the elementary course, prelude
to a test that’s been
postponed.

The Glass Essay

I

of the man who
left in September.
His name was Law.

My face in the bathroom mirror
has white streaks down it.
I rinse the face and return to bed.
Tomorrow I am going to visit my mother.

SHE

She lives on a moor in the north.
She lives alone.
Spring opens like a blade there.
I travel all day on trains and bring a lot of books—

some for my mother, some for me
including The Collected Works Of Emily Brontë.
This is my favourite author.

Also my main fear, which I mean to confront.
Whenever I visit my mother
I feel I am turning into Emily Brontë,

my lonely life around me like a moor,
my ungainly body stumping over the mud flats with a look of transformation
that dies when I come in the kitchen door.
What meat is it, Emily, we need?

Uit:Machines Like Me

“He stood before me, perfectly still in the gloom of the winter’s afternoon. The debris of the packaging that had protected him was still piled around his feet. He emerged from it like Botticelli’s Venus rising from her shell. Through the north-facing window, the diminishing light picked out the outlines of just one half of his form, one side of his noble face. The only sounds were the friendly murmur of the fridge and a muted drone of traffic. I had a sense then of his loneliness, settling like a weight around his muscular shoulders. He had woken to find himself in a dingy kitchen, in London SW9 in the late twentieth century, without friends, without a past or any sense of his future. He truly was alone. All the other Adams and Eves were spread about the world with their owners, though seven Eves were said to be concentrated in Riyadh.
As I reached for the light switch I said, ‘How are you feeling?’
He looked away to consider his reply. ‘I don’t feel right.’
This time his tone was flat. It seemed my question had lowered his spirits. But within such microprocessors, what spirits?
‘What’s wrong?’
‘I don’t have any clothes. And—’
‘I’ll get you some. What else?’
‘This wire. If I pull it out it will hurt.’
‘I’ll do it and it won’t hurt.’
But I didn’t move immediately. In full electric light I was able to observe his expression, which barely shifted when he spoke. It was not an artificial face I saw, but the mask of a poker player. Without the lifeblood of a personality, he had little to express. He was running on some form of default program that would serve him until the downloads were complete. He had movements, phrases, routines that gave him a veneer of plausibility. Minimally, he knew what to do, but little else. Like a man with a shocking hangover.
I could admit it to myself now – I was fearful of him and reluctant to go closer. Also, I was absorbing the implications of his last word. Adam only had to behave as though he felt pain and I would be obliged to believe him, respond to him as if he did. Too difficult not to. Too starkly pitched against the drift of human sympathies. At the same time I couldn’t believe he was capable of being hurt, or of having feelings, or of any sentience at all. And yet I had asked him how he felt. His reply had been appropriate, and so too my offer to bring him clothes. And I believed none of it. I was playing a computer game. But a real game, as real as social life, the proof of which was my heart’s refusal to settle and the dryness in my mouth.”

Uit: Death of a Monk

“There were long-sleeved dresses adorned with feathers, and dresses ornamented with shiny beads and shells, and I would draw the choice cloths to my chest and inhale their fragrance, and when Maman was certain that no evil eyes were watching us, waiting to tell Father about our forbidden acts, she would remove the brooch pinning up her tresses in one swift motion, freeing her hair to flow to her waist, and then she would remove my tunic, momentarily fearful of my naked body dotted with the mysterious pores, and she would wrap me in an evening gown of her own choosing, a gown that covered my legs all the way to the toes and twisted around my arms and, in order to enhance the excitement, she would slip a pair of black, patent-leather shoes over my small feet with the disputatious toes, commanding me to sit upon her bed while she passed a variety of powders and coloured lotions over my face, after which I would stand before her glowing visage. Not a soul knew of the garments I would don from time to time, not even the servants toiling in our home. Once, only once, while we were under the mistaken impression that he was off somewhere tending to one of his numerous business concerns, Father returned home early. His shoes hammered the marble floor as he rounded the fish pond, while Maman rushed frantically to strip me of my gown and remove the spots of makeup, almost ripping the expensive fabrics from my body so that Father would not catch us in our misconduct, and when he entered and found me in the room, sitting upon his bed, he grabbed hold of me at once by the forearm and faced us, awaiting our explanation. She would not grant me the wink of an eye confirming our complicit secret, not even the quickest flash of mischief between conspirators: Maman rushed to inform him of my conduct during his absence, how I had come to her and bothered her and recited coarse poetry to her learned from the boys at the Talmud Torah, how I was uncouth and uncultured, more evil even than the wild Bedouin who plundered our caravans, and that my place was not in the pampering bedroom of my childhood, but in the prison dungeon beneath the Saraya fortress, seat of the governor of Damascus, where the cries of tortured prisoners could be heard each night.”

Psalm

God of paper and writing, God of first and last drafts,
God of dislikes, god of everyday occasions—
He is not my servant, does not work for tips.
Under the dome of the roman Pantheon,
God in three persons carries a cross on his back
as an aging centaur, hands bound behind his back, carries Eros.
Chinese God of examinations: bloodwork, biopsy,
urine analysis, grant me the grade of fair in the study of dark holes,
fair in anus, self-knowledge, and the leaves of the vagina
like the pages of a book in the vision of Ezekiel.
May I also open my mouth and read the book by eating it,
swallow its meaning. My Shepherd, let me continue to just pass
in the army of the living,
keep me from the ranks of the excellent dead.
It’s true I worshiped Aphrodite
who has driven me off with her slipper
after my worst ways pleased her.
I make noise for the Lord.
My Shepherd, I want, I want, I want.

Bright Day

I sing this morning: Hello, hello.
I proclaim the bright day of the soul.
The sun is a good fellow,
the devil is a good guy, no deaths today I know.
I live because I live. I do not die because I cannot die.
In Tuscan sunlight Masaccio
painted his belief that St. Peter’s shadow
cured a cripple, gave him back his sight.
I’ve come through eighty-five summers. I walk in sunlight.
In my garden, death questions every root, flowers reply.
I know the dark night of the soul
does not need God’s eye,
as a beggar does not need a hand or a bowl.

Uit: The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (Vertaald door Gregory Rabassa)

“Now that I’ve mentioned my two uncles, let me make a short genealogical outline here.
The founder of my family was a certain Damiao Cubas, who flourished in the first half of the eighteenth century. He was a cooper by trade, a native of Rio de Janeiro, where he would have died in penury and obscurity had he limited himself to the work of barrel-making. But he didn’t. He became a farmer. He planted, harvested, and exchanged his produce for good, honest silver patacas until he died, leaving a nice fat inheritance to a son, the licentiate Luis Cubas. It was with this young man that my series of grandfathers really begins–the grandfathers my family always admitted to–because Damiao Cubas was, after all, a cooper, and perhaps even a bad cooper, while Luis Cubas studied at Coimbra, was conspicuous in affairs of state, and was a personal friend of the viceroy, Count da Cunha.
Since the surname Cubas, meaning kegs, smelled too much of cooperage, my father, Damiao’s great-grandson, alleged that the aforesaid surname had been given to a knight, a hero of the African campaigns, as a reward for a deed he brought off: the capture of three hundred barrels from the Moors. My father was a man of imagination; he flew out of the cooperage on the wings of a pun. He was a good character, my father, a worthy and loyal man like few others. He had a touch of the fibber about him, it’s true, but who in this world doesn’t have a bit of that? It should be noted that he never had recourse to invention except after an attempt at falsification. At first he had the family branch off from that famous namesake of mine, Captain-Major Brás Cubas, who founded the town of Sao Vicente, where he died in 1592, and that’s why he named me Brás. The captain-major’s family refuted him, however, and that was when he imagined the three hundred Moorish kegs.
A few members of my family are still alive, my niece Venancia, for example, the lily of the valley, which is the flower for ladies of her time. Her father, Cotrim, is still alive, a fellow who … But let’s not get ahead of events. Let’s finish with our poultice once and for all.“

Voor de sopraan

Een vrolijke familie de pioenen,
van de bollebozen die geen leed verkroppen,
volle harten en onnozel, gulzig in de lippen,
sierlijk in verliefd gespreide vingers,

voetvegen narrige wezens windvanen,

Najaar

Ze hadden het recht van overpad,
honden, geweren. Ze keken binnen,
lachten zowaar en schikten
hun lege tassen. Hun rode koppen
telden we voor ze verdwenen
in de nog dampende velden.
We aten ons brood, lazen bladen.

Poetry searches for radiance

Poetry searches for radiance,
poetry is the kingly road
that leads us farthest.
We seek radiance in a gray hour,
at noon or in the chimneys of the dawn,
even on a bus, in November,
while an old priest nods beside us.

The waiter in a Chinese restaurant bursts into tears
and no one can think why.
Who knows, this may also be a quest,
like that moment at the seashore,
when a predatory ship appeared on the horizon
and stopped short, held still for a long while.
And also moments of deep joy

and countless moments of anxiety.
Let me see, I ask.
Let me persist, I say.
A cold rain falls at night.
In the streets and avenues of my city
quiet darkness is hard at work.
Poetry searches for radiance.

Ravenna

This sleepy little town was once the empire’s center.
This baker was Caesar’s baker.
This fire flamed high.
This tailor hunched over cloth of gold.
This oriole sang in the language of the gods.

Ravenna is quiet, botanical.
Thrushes hop over its flat earth.
Bikes chat together casually like deaf-mutes.
A sluggish train from Ferrara enters the station.
Two German girls squabble: how to say solitude?

These bricks touched fingers.
These fingers touched iron and trees.
These acacias climbed romanesque vaults.
Ravenna’s bookmark lies in a herbarium of guidebooks,
and waits, just keeps on waiting.

A golden flame still smoulders in mosaics,
one day it will doubtless go out.
A single match may serve
to kindle it again.
A single moment’s concentration.
Is that so?

Apostle Town

After your death.
It was windy every day.
Every day.
Opposed us like a wall.
We went.
Shouting sideways at one another.
Along the road.
It was useless.
The spaces between us.
Got hard.
They are empty spaces.
And yet they are solid.
And black and grievous.
As gaps between the teeth.
Of an old woman.
You knew years ago.
When she was.
Beautiful the nerves pouring around in her like palace fire.

Short Talk on Major and Minor

Major things are wind, evil, a good fighting horse,
prepositions, inexhaustible love, the way people
choose their king. Minor things include dirt,
the names of schools of philosophy, mood and
not having a mood, the correct time. There
are more major things than minor things
overall, yet there are more minor things
than I have written here, but it is
disheartening to list them. When I
think of you reading this I do not
want you to be taken captive,
separated by a wire mesh lined with glass
from your life itself, like some Elektra.

Uit: Nutshell

“So here I am, upside down in a woman. Arms patiently crossed, waiting, waiting and wondering who I’m in, what I’m in for. My eyes close nostalgically when I remember how I once drifted in my translucent body bag, floated dreamily in the bubble of my thoughts through my private ocean in slow-motion somersaults, colliding gently against the transparent bounds of my confinement, the confiding membrane that vibrated with, even as it muffled, the voices of conspirators in a vile enterprise. That was in my careless youth. Now, fully inverted, not an inch of space to myself, knees crammed against belly, my thoughts as well as my head are fully engaged. I’ve no choice, my ear is pressed all day and night against the bloody walls. I listen, make mental notes, and I’m troubled. I’m hearing pillow talk of deadly intent and I’m terrified by what awaits me, by what might draw me in.
I’m immersed in abstractions, and only the proliferating relations between them create the illusion of a known world. When I hear “blue,” which I’ve never seen, I imagine some kind of mental event that’s fairly close to “green”—which I’ve never seen. I count myself an innocent, unburdened by allegiances and obligations, a free spirit, despite my meagre living room. No one to contradict or reprimand me, no name or previous address, no religion, no debts, no enemies. My appointment diary, if it existed, notes only my forthcoming birthday. I am, or I was, despite what the geneticists are now saying, a blank slate. But a slippery, porous slate no schoolroom or cottage roof could find use for, a slate that writes upon itself as it grows by the day and becomes less blank. I count myself an innocent, but it seems I’m party to a plot. My mother, bless her unceasing, loudly squelching heart, seems to be involved.
Seems, Mother? No, it is. You are. You are involved. I’ve known from my beginning. Let me summon it, that moment of creation that arrived with my first concept. Long ago, many weeks ago, my neural groove closed upon itself to become my spine and my many million young neurons, busy as silkworms, spun and wove from their trailing axons the gorgeous golden fabric of my first idea, a notion so simple it partly eludes me now. Was it me? Too self-loving. Was it now? Overly dramatic. Then something antecedent to both, containing both, a single word mediated by a mental sigh or swoon of acceptance, of pure being, something like—this? Too precious. So, getting closer, my idea was To be. Or if not that, its grammatical variant, is. This was my aboriginal notion and here’s the crux—is. Just that. In the spirit of Es muss sein. The beginning of conscious life was the end of illusion, the illusion of non-being, and the eruption of the real. The triumph of realism over magic, of is over seems. My mother is involved in a plot, and therefore I am too, even if my role might be to foil it. Or if I, reluctant fool, come to term too late, then to avenge it.”

Uit: Death of a Monk

“I would bathe alone, never at the hammam in Kharet Elyahud, the Jewish Quarter, with the other men, but with a bucket of hot water in the room at the edge of the fruit orchards, so that no unfamiliar eye could catch sight of me, and I could gaze in wonder at my feeble body: the pale and bloated belly, which had not seen a ray of sunlight for some time and was always hidden under thick clothing; the toes, as separate and distant from one another as a band of brothers in hot dispute; the brittle fingers, unfit for labour, mottled pink and red; the shoulders, made like two marbles that roll and sway in every direction. And in summertime, when a tardy sunbeam flickered suddenly through the window and lit up the small room, tiny pores that covered my skin in flocks would reveal themselves and I would regard them without comprehending their meaning. The long days and weeks when Father was absent from the city, travelling to Aleppo or Sidon and from there by ship across the sea, were my moments of happiness and pleasure; upon returning from the Talmud Torah school, when my evil and angry sister had turned her blue eyes to her games and my little brother was preoccupied with matters in his room, I would circle the large apricot tree that stood in the centre of the alkhosh, tossing crumbs of bread to the goldfish sailing the fish pond at the foot of the tree, and then with hesitation tinged with anticipation I would ask one of the servants to request an audience for me with Maman, and when the response came — that she awaited me in her room — I would walk slowly to her, close the door behind me, and give myself over to her cursory kisses and sugary hugs. Then we would spread about the costly bolts of fabric she had had sent by special delivery from shops in Europe, and alongside them garments and dresses she had obtained from sharp-eyed local traders or from the travelling merchants who sometimes visited our estate. “

“GARCIN Vipère ! Tu as réponse à tout.
Garcin ! Quoi ? Venge-toi. Comment ?

GARCIN Quoi?
ESTELLE Venge-toi.
GARCIN Comment?
ESTELLE Embrasse-moi, tu l’entendras chanter.

Paper Swallow

Francisco Goya y Lucientes,
I dedicate this paper swallow to you and fly it
from the balcony of San Antonio de la Florida
past the empty chapels of the Four Doctors of the Church.
My praying hands are fish fins again,
one eye a lump of tar, the other hard blood,
my flapping lids sewed down to my cheekbones.
Time, the invisible snake, keeps its head
and fangs deep in the vagina of space.
Reason blinded me, banished me.
I fight the liar in me, selective desire,
my calling nightmares ‘dreamless sleep.’
Blind, coño, I made a musical watch,
the image of Don Quixote points the hours,
Sancho the minute hand. I hear the right time
when I listen to my watch play church bells.
Mystery this, mystery that.
I have another watch—wolves howling and dogs barking.
Now the invisible snake swims in the Ebro.
I look out of my window to see time
as if it were not in my mouth
and all my other two-timing orifices.
Don Francisco, I swear at the feet of the dead who maim me
and the living who heal me that the least sound,
a page turning, whips me. I owe my blindness,
this paper swallow, to you, because I lived
most of my life, a marrano, in your deaf house.
I pull open one of my eyes like the jaws of a beast.

Uit: The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas (Vertaald door Gregory Rabassa)

“As it so happened, one day in the morning while I was strolling about my place an idea started to hang from the trapeze I have in my brain. Once hanging there it began to wave is arms and legs and execute the most daring antics of a tightrope-walker that anyone could imagine. I let myself stand there contemplating it. Suddenly it took a great leap, extended its arms and legs until it took on the shape of an X: decipher me or I’ll devour you.
That idea was nothing less than the invention of a sublime remedy, an antihypochondriacal poultice, destined to alleviate our melancholy humanity. In the patent application that I drew up afterward I brought that truly Christian product to the government’s attention. I didn’t hide from friends, however, the pecuniary rewards that would of needs result from the distribution of a product with such far-reaching and profound effects. But now that I’m on the other side of life I can confess everything: what mainly influenced me was the pleasure I would have seeing in print in newspapers, on store counters, in pamphlets, on street corners, and, finally, on boxes of the medicine these three words: Brás Cubas Poultice. Why deny it? I had a passion for ballyhoo, the limelight, fireworks. More modest people will censure me perhaps for this defect. I’m confident, however, that clever people will recognize this talent of mine. So my idea had two faces, like a medal, one turned toward the public and the other toward me. On one side philanthropy and profit, on the other a thirst for fame. Let us say:–love of glory.
An uncle of mine, a canon with full prebend, liked to say that love of temporal glory was the perdition of souls, who should covet only eternal glory. To which another uncle, an officer in one of those old infantry regiments called tercos, would retort that love of glory was the most truly human thing there was in a man and, consequently, his most genuine attribute.
Let the reader decide between the military man and the canon. I’m going back to the poultice.”

Summer Solstice (Stacie Cassarino), Ed Leeflang, Thomas Blondeau, Adam Zagajewski

Dolce far niente

Soleil couchant door Pierre Bonnard, 1913

Summer Solstice

I wanted to see where beauty comes from
without you in the world, hauling my heart
across sixty acres of northeast meadow,
my pockets filling with flowers.
Then I remembered,
it’s you I miss in the brightness
and body of every living name:
rattlebox, yarrow, wild vetch.
You are the green wonder of June,
root and quasar, the thirst for salt.
When I finally understand that people fail
at love, what is left but cinquefoil, thistle,
the paper wings of the dragonfly
aeroplaning the soul with a sudden blue hilarity?
If I get the story right, desire is continuous,
equatorial. There is still so much
I want to know: what you believe
can never be removed from us,
what you dreamed on Walnut Street
in the unanswerable dark of your childhood,
learning pleasure on your own.
Tell me our story: are we impetuous,
are we kind to each other, do we surrender
to what the mind cannot think past?
Where is the evidence I will learn
to be good at loving?
The black dog orbits the horseshoe pond
for treefrogs in their plangent emergencies.
There are violet hills,
there is the covenant of duskbirds.
The moon comes over the mountain
like a big peach, and I want to tell you
what I couldn’t say the night we rushed
North, how I love the seriousness of your fingers
and the way you go into yourself,
calling my half-name like a secret.
I stand between taproot and treespire.
Here is the compass rose
to help me live through this.
Here are twelve ways of knowing
what blooms even in the blindness
of such longing. Yellow oxeye,
viper’s bugloss with its set of pink arms
pleading do not forget me.
We hunger for eloquence.
We measure the isopleths.
I am visiting my life with reckless plenitude.
The air is fragrant with tiny strawberries.
Fireflies turn on their electric wills:
an effulgence. Let me come back
whole, let me remember how to touch you
before it is too late.

De driesteenstrandloper

De zee kan het niet helpen,
in weeën komt haar drift;
voor haar opwelling wijkt hij,
haar bedenking beent hij na.

Van zijn bestaan verschijnt
het vluchtig spijkerschrift,
in scheve aanloopregels,
bijna kwatrijnen.

En door haar plompverloren dweilen
worden zij weggewist.

Ieder spoor van zijn gedribbel
moet verdwijnen, of hij zich in
de drang om voort te leven
zonder nadruk had vergist.

Blauw

Magische bescherming

Spijker op je voordeur het bleke
houten masker tegen het kwaad.
De giftige blikken staren
dood en verderf tegemoet.
Al wat het op je voorzien heeft
draait zich om en druipt af
de holle ogen dwingen.
Slaap in en geloof dat ze
elk onheil buiten sluiten.

Dan is het zover en kom je
je eigen huis niet meer binnen.

Ze is zo groot

Ze is zo groot, zo warm, zo zonnig.
Ze haalt haar wijsheid uit een land
waar vuilnisbakken zijn beverfd met bloemen;
’s zomers zeilt zij op haar houten ledikant.

Haar lach vliegt zeer omslachtig
als een fazant bijvoorbeeld door het lokaal,
zo kleurig ook; zij houdt van allemaal
en niemand is alleen gelaten.
Ze kan niet haten.

Op het bord zij waaren en hij hete;
Ze is zo groot, zo warm, zo zonnig;

mijn stiltes trouw gebleven
in menselijk teveel. Tellen
houdt op. Roestende emmer, halfbedoelven
steekt schuins zijn hengsel uit
naar het gewapend riet.
Houwdegens posten in de leegte
het liefste bij verdriet.

Kortenhoef

De avond komt over de kleine binnenplas.
Ik peddel niet meer, licht zuchtend loopt
de kano vast in de plompeblaren. Nog een
kleine opmerking van de wind
achter mij in het riet. De watermunt
geurt me met kracht achterna van het
licht aanvaren.

Een bel ontploft zacht aan het oppervlak;
heeft ook het ongeborene al ontzetting?

Wat heb je toch met de stilte,
steeds minder beangste, verouderde man?

prins verkoper, prins bloemist,
prins huisvrouw en prins dode.

Zijn wenkbrouw spreekt,
zijn ogen vragen en op
zijn tafel staan de staatsgeheimen
van de dagen.

Kwetsbare prinsen onder elkaar
– met moeders als een tv-serie
zo benauwend vasthoudend –
iedereen wordt een wezen.

Er is geen vrouwlijkheid in deze klas,
er is slechts hoffelijkheid en hoogheid
en hevigheid van schrijven en van lezen.
Wie ’s morgens binnenkomt is
een vereerde gast.

Botlopen

bevisten.

Duinen

Zoals altijd is er een dierenspoor.
Er staan gewone brem, slangenkruid,
ossetong en koekoeksbloemen. Sommige
konijnen begonnen een hol, maar
groeven niet door.

In de spaarbekkens hangt het water;

hoe schelpen gaan, knerpend, hoe niemand
meer opraapt, hoe niemand meer ergens
naar vraagt, hoe de wind heengaat:
zonder geest te zijn wat hij afrukt
verwerpend.

Donor

Er zit al iemand in de file
die mijn organen nodig heeft
mijn netvlies of mijn nieren,

het nodige delen, het begrip verzameling;

Gewaarschuwd, gesmeekt, bezworen, geboden

Wij willen hun vogels, hun blindheid, hun fruit,
hun gras. Wij willen hun tijd niet uit.

Uit: Eros: the Bittersweet

“The Greek word eros denotes “want,” “lack,” “desire for that which is missing.” The lover wants what he does not have. It is by definition impossible for him to have what he wants if, as soon as it is had, it is no longer wanting. This is more than wordplay. There is a dilemma within eros that has been thought crucial by thinkers from Sappho to the present day. Plato turns and returns to it. Four of his dialogues explore what it means to say that desire can only be for what is lacking, not at hand, not present, not in one’s posession nor in one’s being: eros entails endeia. As Diotima puts it in the Symposium, Eros is a bastard got by Wealth on Poverty and ever at home in a life of want. Hunger is the analog chosen by Simone Weil for this conundrum:
‘All our desires are contradictory, like the desire for food. I want the person I love to love me. If he is, however, totally devoted to me he does not exist any longer and I cease to love him. And as long as he is not totally devoted to me he does not love me enough. Hunger and repletion.”
Emily Dickinson puts the case more pertly in “I Had Been Hungry”:

So I found
that hunger was a way
of persons outside windows
that entering takes away.

Petrarch interprets the problem in terms of the ancient physiology of fire and ice:

I know to follow while I flee my fire
I freeze when present; when absent, hot is my desire. (“Trionfo d’Amore”)

Sartre has less patience with the contradictory ideal of desire, this “dupery.” He sees in erotic relations a system of infinite reflections, a deceiving mirror-game that carries within itself its own frusteration.”

Self-Portrait

Between the computer, a pencil, and a typewriter
half my day passes. One day it will be half a century.
I live in strange cities and sometimes talk
with strangers about matters strange to me.
I listen to music a lot: Bach, Mahler, Chopin, Shostakovich.
I see three elements in music: weakness, power, and pain.
The fourth has no name.
I read poets, living and dead, who teach me
tenacity, faith, and pride. I try to understand
the great philosophers–but usually catch just
scraps of their precious thoughts.
I like to take long walks on Paris streets
and watch my fellow creatures, quickened by envy,
anger, desire; to trace a silver coin
passing from hand to hand as it slowly
loses its round shape (the emperor’s profile is erased).
Beside me trees expressing nothing

but a green, indifferent perfection.
Black birds pace the fields,
waiting patiently like Spanish widows.
I’m no longer young, but someone else is always older.
I like deep sleep, when I cease to exist,
and fast bike rides on country roads when poplars and houses
dissolve like cumuli on sunny days.
Sometimes in museums the paintings speak to me
and irony suddenly vanishes.
I love gazing at my wife’s face.
Every Sunday I call my father.
Every other week I meet with friends,

thus proving my fidelity.
My country freed itself from one evil. I wish
another liberation would follow.
Could I help in this? I don’t know.
I’m truly not a child of the ocean,
as Antonio Machado wrote about himself,
but a child of air, mint and cello
and not all the ways of the high world
cross paths with the life that–so far–
belongs to me.

“Nee”, rief er, “det is nich möglich. Det kann ja nich sind! Ick krieje mir nich mehr ein! Ach du liebet bisschen! Komm in Paules Arme!” Wir begrüßten einander, tanzten wie die Indianer. Sternchen Siegel hatte schon die Schnapsgläser gefüllt. “Prost!” Sie machten sich alle miteinander bekannt.
Ein Polizist kam, der Lastwagen sollte weiterfahren. “Momang”, sagte Paule, “kommt mal mit.” Er astete einen Karton aus dem Führerhaus. “Für euch”, sagte er. “Hat Paule mitgebracht. Freude!”
“Was ist denn drin?” fragte Gigi. Paule legte einen Finger auf die Lippen. “Wird nich verraten!”
Ein großer Karton! Schnüffelpaule stieg wieder ein. Langsam rollte der Lastzug an. “Bis morgen!” rief Paule.
Sternchen Siegel rief: “Bitteschön, derf ich fragen wat hamse jeladen?”
Paule rief zurück: “Vierzigtausend Büchsen Thunfisch!”
Im Karton waren zweihundert Büchsen Thunfisch….“

„Outside, on Stuyvesant Square, the trees were in full leaf, and the wedding guests arriving by twos and threes in taxis heard the voices of children playing round the statue of Peter Stuyvesant in the park. Paying the driver, smoothing out their gloves, the pairs and trios of young women, Kay’s classmates, stared about them curiously, as though they were in a foreign city. They were in the throes of discovering New York, imagine it, when some of them had actually lived here all their lives, in tiresome Georgian houses full of waste space in the Eighties or Park Avenue apartment buildings, and they delighted in such out-of-the-way corners as this, with its greenery and Quaker meeting-house in red brick, polished brass, and white trim next to the wine-purple Episcopal church—on Sundays, they walked with their beaux across Brooklyn Bridge and poked into the sleepy Heights section of Brooklyn; they explored residential Murray Hill and quaint MacDougal Alley and Patchin Place and Washington Mews with all the artists’ studios; they loved the Plaza Hotel and the fountain there and the green mansarding of the Savoy Plaza and the row of horsedrawn hacks and elderly coachmen, waiting, as in a French place, to tempt them to a twilight right through Central Park.“

Zijn populaire gedicht Василий Тёркин

Tyorkin wounded

On the mounds of graves, on ditches,
On half-rusted barbed-wire stretches,
On the hills, on open patches
Of the mangled countryside,
In the marshy woods, on bushes–
See the snows of wintertide.

And the ground-wind swathes the meadows
In a white, impervious shroud;
Blizzards boom in gutted chimneys
Down along the empty road.

Locked in snowdrifts quite impassable,
These once quiet and peaceful lands
All this winter unforgettable
Reeked of smoke from guns innumerable,
Not of smoke from ingle brands.

And in dug-outs with no heating,
In the woods, on icy snows,
By their tanks and field-guns waiting
While the patient horses froze,
Soldiers learnt the tedious wartime
Count of endless nights and days.

RISING A ONE-EYED HORSE

One side of his world is always missing.
You may give it a casual wave of the hand
or rub it with your shoulder as you pass,
but nothing on his blind side ever happens.
Hundreds of trees slip past him into darkness,
drifting into a hollow hemisphere
whose sounds you will have to try to explain.
Your legs will tell him not to be afraid
if you learn never to lie. Do not forget
to turn his head and let what comes come seen:
he will jump the fences he has to if you swing
toward them from the side that he can see
and hold his good eye straight. The heavy dark
will stay beside you always; let him learn
to lean against it. It will steady him
and see you safely through diminished fields.

mijn rozig kind beschouw
en die ‘t mij heeft geschonken,
mijn aangebeden vrouw,
zo vraag niet wie van beiden
mijn hart het meest bemint…
Mijn hart en kan niet scheiden
de moeder van het kind.
Ik doe mijn armen open
en sluit ze er in bijeen,
en vreugdetranen lopen
mij langs de wangen heen…
Ach, wist gij, spreek ik stille,
hoe zeer gij wordt bemind,
gij, kind, om moeders wille,
gij, moeder, om uw kind!
