Aeolian Harp

O pale green sea,
With long, pale, purple clouds above –
What lies in me like weight of love ?
What dies in me
With utter grief, because there comes no sign
Through the sun-raying West, or the dim sea-line ?

O salted air,
Blown round the rocky headland still,
What calls me there from cove and hill?
What calls me fair
From thee, the first-born of the youthful night,
Or in the waves is coming through the dusk twilight ?

O yellow Star,
Quivering upon the rippling tide –
Sendest so far to one that sigh’d?
Bendest thou, Star,
Above, where the shadows of the dead have rest
And constant silence, with a message from the blest?

Song. O Spirit Of The Summer-Time!

O spirit of the Summer-time!
Bring back the roses to the dells;
The swallow from her distant clime,
The honey-bee from drowsy cells.

Bring back the friendship of the sun;
The gilded evenings calm and late,
When weary children homeward run,
And peeping stars bid lovers wait.

Bring back the singing; and the scent
Of meadow-lands at dewy prime;
Oh, bring again my heart’s content,
Thou Spirit of the Summer-time!

A Seed

See how a Seed, which Autumn flung down,
And through the Winter neglected lay,
Uncoils two little green leaves and two brown,
With tiny root taking hold on the clay
As, lifting and strengthening day by day,
It pushes red branchless, sprouts new leaves,
And cell after cell the Power in it weaves
Out of the storehouse of soil and clime,
To fashion a Tree in due course of time;
Tree with rough bark and boughs’ expansion,
Where the Crow can build his mansion,
Or a Man, in some new May,
Lie under whispering leaves and say,
“Are the ills of one’s life so very bad
When a Green Tree makes me deliciously glad?”
As I do now. But where shall I be
When this little Seed is a tall green Tree?

In A Spring Grove

Here the white-ray’d anemone is born,
Wood-sorrel, and the varnish’d buttercup;
And primrose in its purfled green swathed up,
Pallid and sweet round every budding thorn,
Gray ash, and beech with rusty leaves outworn.
Here, too the darting linnet hath her nest
In the blue-lustred holly, never shorn,
Whose partner cheers her little brooding breast,
Piping from some near bough. O simple song!
O cistern deep of that harmonious rillet,
And these fair juicy stems that climb and throng
The vernal world, and unexhausted seas
Of flowing life, and soul that asks to fill it,
Each and all of these,–and more, and more than these!

Uvedenrode

At the ravine Uvedenrodes
So many gastropods!
Suprasexual,
Supramusical.

Gastropodists!
Such clear rhapsodists
Ode-singing modistes
The skies are all scarves
Antennae in harps.

Uvedenrodes
Over time, over modes—
Palinodes!

The hour, crystalline,
Next to virgin Geraldine!

Her lacy veil—
Flower of chain mail,

And through her arms—
Icebergs with charms!

To the sacred sun—
This song, bar none.

Ordered spire,
Sound,
Fruit of a lyre,
Ending  paralogical
Cradle mythological,
From the high spheres
You appear:
Oh knave of wave
Over the cavalcade,
The cave over it in an arcade!

Self contained lust,
A girl with a bust
Slides, but just
Once, then she slides
Twice, then nine times,
Until she feels
Light shivers and thrills
Until you spin her,
Gastropodal blur;

Until into many
Attentive antennae
You lower her down:

Like a pendulum rocks,
A useless box,
Under times,
Under modes,
In Uvedenrodes.

Ik zette ’t neer en liet hem gaan;

Zij sprak er stil en minzaam tegen,

Het bleef bij hare zetel staan.

Ik ging tot haar en zeide: Moeder;

Ik weet niet of zij ’t heeft gehoord;

En hen gestreeld, en hen gekust;

Maar ’t scheen of mij hun moeder toeriep:

“Och, laat mijn kinderen toch in rust!”

LETTER III. Boulogne, Augufl 15, J76j, I Am much obliged to you for your kin4 enquiries after my health, which has been lately in a very declining condition. In confequence of a cold, caught a few days after my arrival in France, I was feized with a violent cough, attended with a fever, and ftitches in my breaft, which tormented me all night long without ceafing. At the fame time I had a great difcharge by expectoration, and fuch a dejection of fpirits as I never felt before. In this fituation, I took a ftep which maymay appear to have been defperate. I knew there was no impofthume in my lungs, and I fuppofed the ftitches were fpafmodical. I was fenfible that all my complaints were originally derived from relaxation. I therefore hired a chaife, and going to the beach, about a league from the town, plunged into the fea, without he- fitation. By this defperate remedy, I got a frefh cold in my head ; but my ftitches and fever vanifhed the very firft day; and by a daily repetition of the bath, I have dimi- nifhed my cough, ftrengthened my body, and recovered my fpirits. I believe I fhould have tried the fame experiment even if there had been an abfcefs in my lungs, though fuck practice would have been contrary to all the rules of medicine: but I am not one of thofe who implicitly believe in all the dogmata of phyfic. Uit: The Plot Against America

„Fear presides over these memories, a perpetual fear. Of course no childhood is without its terrors, yet I wonder if I would have been a less frightened boy if Lindbergh hadn’t been president or if I hadn’t been the offspring of Jews. When the first shock came in June of 1940–the nomination for the presidency of Charles A. Lindbergh, America’s international aviation hero, by the Republican Convention at Philadelphia–my father was thirty-nine, an insurance agent with a grade school education, earning a little under fifty dollars a week, enough for the basic bills to be paid on time but for little more. My mother–who’d wanted to go to teachers’ college but couldn’t because of the expense, who’d lived at home working as an office secretary after finishing high school, who’d kept us from feeling poor during the worst of the Depression by budgeting the earnings my father turned over to her each Friday as efficiently as she ran the household–was thirty-six. My brother, Sandy, a seventh-grader with a prodigy’s talent for drawing, was twelve, and I, a third-grader a term ahead of himself–and an embryonic stamp collector inspired like millions of kids by the country’s foremost philatelist, President Roosevelt–was seven.

We lived in the second-floor flat of a small two-and-a-half-family house on a tree-lined street of frame wooden houses with redbrick stoops, each stoop topped with a gable roof and fronted by a tiny yard boxed in with a low-cut hedge. The Weequahic neighborhood had been built on farm lots at the undeveloped southwest edge of Newark just after World War One, some half dozen of the streets named, imperially, for victorious naval commanders in the Spanish-American War and the local movie house called, after FDR’s fifth cousin-and the country’s twenty-sixth president- the Roosevelt. Our street, Summit Avenue, sat at the crest of the neighborhood hill, an elevation as high as any in a port city that rarely rises a hundred feet above the level of the tidal salt marsh to the city’s north and east and the deep bay due east of the airport that bends around the oil tanks of the Bayonne peninsula and merges there with New York Bay to flow past the Statue of Liberty and into the Atlantic.“

Uit: I Wish I Could Say the Same

„I never witnessed the primal scene, Freud’s keyhole drama in which the child spies the parents in the act. I’m not especially curious about how m
ine disported themselves in bed. But I have lately become curious about what it felt like for her, my mother. Granted, it’s a subject I don’t know much about. Whatever I write is conjecture, intimations from what I saw and heard, or didn’t—what was conspicuous by its absence. I have a sense that her deepest satisfaction was in the vanity department, and the connection between vanity and sexual pleasure is even more obscure than are the facts in this case.

My father, who was such a vivid presence for me in his lifetime, has since his death been fading like a Polaroid photo going in the wrong direction, from color and definition back to milky blur. I once thought I knew him through and through, each atom; I had studied him with critical scrutiny, as daughters do. Now I’m not sure I knew anything at all except the surface. Now, unless I make a conscious effort to locate the particles of him that lodged in me, he’s like someone I used to see around all the time but never knew very well—the letter carrier or the man who drove the ice-cream truck. Certain people, whether living or dead, need to be physically present in order to be fully apprehended, while others leave traces that more readily adhere. My mother remains as vivid as when I last saw her alive sixteen years ago. I know her better now than I did then.“

Also gelogen.

A Singer

That which he did not feel, he would not sing;

What most he felt, religion it was to hide

In a dumb darkling grotto, where the spring

Of tremulous tears, arising unespied,

Became a holy well that durst not glide

Into the day with moil or murmuring;

Whereto, as if to some unlawful thing,

He sto]e, musing or praying at its side.

But in the sun he sang with cheerful heart,

Of coloured season and the whirling sphere,

Warm household habitude and human mirth,

The whole faith-blooded mystery of earth;

And I, who had his secret, still could hear

The grotto’s whisper low through every part.

Uit: Cultural Aura of a Nation Or A Defect in the Main Mirror

“If there is a, what is called, bio-field, “an aura” of a human being, then there must be “an aura” of a whole nation made up of these human beings, though you can’t see it with a naked eye.

As far as the notion of “a nation” is concerned, it seems to have, at first glance, quite a clear-cut and easily understandable definition. But there has been so much confusion introduced into this notion recently, that a layman may find himself at a loss. I won’t go into the history of this issue but I’ll make one obvious statement: if the Ukrainian were not a nation they would have stopped being Ukrainians long time ago. There was some “divine wind” that kept hurling other nations, generation after generation, upon the Ukrainians in the struggle for the possession of a piece of land that God has given Ukrainians to live upon.

And another thing, not connected with terminology. Say, we hear the word “Spain”, what associations it brings? Lope de Vega, Calderon, Cervantes, Goya, Prado Museum, Federico de Garcia Lorca, and other names and phenomena along these lines. But wait a minute, what about auto-da-fe, Inquisition, Torquemada, conquistadors, expulsion of Jews from Spain, bloody civil wars. All of it is Spain, too. But why the image of the Spanish nation is not associated for us with all those dreadful things? Why culture dominates? We know the poetry of Juan Jimenez, we know the canvases of El Greco, we know the music of Sarasate. That is what creates the aura of the nation. Also, the one that includes the French composer Bizet who wrote an opera about a Spanish gypsy, based on a story by the French writer Merime. American Hemingway writes a novel called “Fiesta”, a movable feast.”

Klangfarbe

Der Dudelsack im Welken geteilten Schmerz erahne;

Vom Tage trügt das gold’ne Heu der Strahlen;

Gerade,  soll’s  dein Linienbruch verneinen?

Die oude man met sneeuwwit haar;

Maar meest zit hij in zich verzonken

En stil en zwijgend nevens haar.

Zij wordt wel groot, maar is zoo tenger;

Uit: The Adventures of Roderick Random

By the friendship of this poor woman she was carried up to a garret, and immediately delivered of a man child, the story of whose unfortunate birth he himself now relates. My father, being informed of what had happened, flew to the embraces of his darling spouse, and while he loaded his offspring with paternal embraces, could not forbear shedding a flood of tears on beholding the dear partner of his heart (for whose ease he would have sacrificed the treasures of the east) stretched upon a flock bed, in a miserable apartment, unable to protect her from the inclemencies of the weather. It is not to be supposed that the old gentleman was ignorant of what passed, though he affected to know nothing of the matter, and pretended to be very much surprised, when one of his grandchildren, by his eldest son deceased, who lived with him as his heir apparent, acquainted him with the affair;

Liebesanfang

Mit jener Macht, der nimmer zu entrinnen;

Und alles Forschen, Grübeln bleibt vergebens;
Nie halt’ ich fest, was damals vorgegangen.

Uit: The Human Stain

It was in the summer of 1998 that my neighbor Coleman Silk—who, before retiring two years earlier, had been a classics professor at nearby Athena College for some twenty-odd years as well as serving for sixteen more as the dean of faculty—confided to me that, at the age of seventy-one, he was having an affair with a thirty-four-year-old cleaning woman who worked down at the college. Twice a week she also cleaned the rural post office, a small gray clapboard shack that looked as if it might have sheltered an Okie family from the winds of the Dust Bowl back in the 1930s and that, sitting alone and forlorn across from the gas station and the general store, flies its American flag at the junction of the two roads that mark the commerci
al center of this mountainside town.

Coleman had first seen the woman mopping the post office floor when he went around late one day, a few minutes before closing time, to get his mail—a thin, tall, angular woman with graying blond hair yanked back into a ponytail and the kind of severely sculpted features customarily associated with the church-ruled, hardworking goodwives who suffered through New England’s harsh beginnings, stern colonial women locked up within the reigning morality and obedient to it. Her name was Faunia Farley, and whatever miseries she endured she kept concealed behind one of those inexpressive bone faces that hide nothing and bespeak an immense loneliness. Faunia lived in a room at a local dairy farm where she helped with the milking in order to pay her rent. She’d had two years of high school education.”

The Boy

The Boy from his bedroom-window
Look’d over the little town,
And away to the bleak black upland
Under a clouded moon.

The moon came forth from her cavern,
He saw the sudden gleam
Of a tarn in the swarthy moorland;
Or perhaps the whole was a dream.

For I never could find that water
In all my walks and rides:
Far-off, in the Land of Memory,
That midnight pool abides.

Many fine things had I glimpse of,
And said, “I shall.find them one day.”
Whether within or without me
They were, I cannot say.

“ Around the grave in the rundown cemetery were a few of his former advertising colleagues from New York, who recalled his energy and originality and told his daughter, Nancy, what a pleasure it had been to work with him. There were also people who’d driven up from Starfish Beach, the residential retirement village at the Jersey Shore where he’d been living since Thanksgiving of 2001 — the elderly to whom only recently he’d been giving art classes. And there were his two sons, Randy and Lonny, middle-aged men from his turbulent first marriage, very much their mother’s children, who as a consequence knew little of him that was praiseworthy and much that was beastly and who were present out of duty and nothing more. His older brother, Howie, and his sister-in-law were there, having flown in from California the night before, and there was one of his three ex-wives, the middle one, Nancy’s mother, Phoebe, a tall, very thin white-haired woman whose right arm hung limply at her side. When asked by Nancy if she wanted to say anything, Phoebe shyly shook her head but then went ahead to speak in a soft voice, her speech faintly slurred. “It’s just so hard to believe. I keep thinking of him swimming the bay — that’s all. I just keep seeing him swimming the bay.” And then Nancy, who had made her father’s funeral arrangements and placed the phone calls to those who’d showed up so that the mourners wouldn’t consist of just her mother, herself, and his brother and sister-in-law. There was only one person whose presence hadn’t to do with having been invited, a heavyset woman with a pleasant round face and dyed red hair who had simply appeared at the cemetery and introduced herself as Maureen, the private duty nurse who had looked after him following his heart surgery years back. Howie remembered her and went up to kiss her cheek.”

“ THE northern night had come early to Stockholm this day, and that meant that autumn was almost gone and the dark winter was near at hand.

For Count Bertil Jacobsson, as he walked slowly through the lamplit Humlegården park, his lion-headed brown cane barely brushing the hardened turf, it was a happy time, his favourite time of the year. He knew the promise of this cold premature night: the winds would come, and the mists sweep in from Lake Mälaren, and eventually, the snow and ice; and there would be no guilts about locking himself in his crowded, comfortable apartment, hibernating among his beloved mementoes of half a century, and working on his encyclopaedic Notes.

Emerging from the park, Count Bertil Jacobsson arrived at last on the pavement of Sturegatan. The evening’s constitutional was over, and the final exciting business of the night — the culmination of ten months of intensive and abrasive activity — would soon take place. For a moment, almost wistfully, he turned to look back at the park. To any other man, what had recently been so lush and green might now seem stark and denuded, the trees stripped of foliage and outlined grotesquely in the artificial light like gnarled symbols of life’s end in a surrealistic oil. But Jacobsson’s peculiar vision transformed the scene by some special alchemy to a kind of initiation of life, a nativity when nature was reborn, and the old year at last delivered of first life. Again, he told himself, his favourite season had arrived, and tonight, this night, would be a memorable one.”

Andere belangrijke boeken van Peter Abrahams zijn: “The path of thunder” (1948), “Wild conquest” (1950), “A wreath for Udomo” (1956), “A night of their own” (1965) en “This island now” (1966).

“With Shakespeare and poetry, a new world was born. New dreams, new desires, a self consciousness was born. I desired to know to know myself in terms of the new standards set by these books.”

To live with the conscious knowledge of the shadow of uncertainty, with the knowledge that disaster or tragedy could strike at any time; to be afraid and to know and acknowledge your fear, and still to live creatively and with unstinting love: that is to live with grace.”

Day and Night Songs in 1855.

A dream

I heard the dogs howl in the moonlight night;
I went to the window to see the sight;
All the Dead that ever I knew
Going one by one and two by two.

On they pass’d, and on they pass’d;
Townsfellows all, from first to last;
Born in the moonlight of the lane,
Quench’d in the heavy shadow again.

Schoolmates, marching as when we play’d
At soldiers once—but now more staid;
Those were the strangest sight to me
Who were drown’d, I knew, in the awful sea.

Straight and handsome folk; bent and weak, too;
Some that I loved, and gasp’d to speak to;
Some but a day in their churchyard bed;
Some that I had not known were dead.

A long, long crowd—where each seem’d lonely,
Yet of them all there was one, one only,
Raised a head or look’d my way:
She linger’d a moment—she might not stay.

How long since I saw that fair pale face!
Ah! Mother dear! might I only place
My head on thy breast, a moment to rest,
While thy hand on my tearful cheek were prest!

On, on, a moving bridge they made
Across the moon-stream, from shade to shade,
Young and old, women and men;
Many long-forgot, but remember’d then.

And first there came a bitter laughter;
A sound of tears the moment after;
And then a music so lofty and gay,
That every morning, day by day,
I strive to recall it if I may.

Zurückgekehrte Schwalbe, du weißt nicht, was tun.

Aquarelles of Childhood

The Dnipro, an old landing-stage, lion-yellow banks are lying,
Resting the green mane of the long-leaved violet willow on their claws.
A pirogue has moored on the sand.
Somebody is cooking fish soup, thick smoke is everywhere.
A dry, cracked road crawls like a thirsty crocodile.
Kupava is bathing in the Dnipro.
I am still around three years old,
And I am waiting for a steamer
From behind the Trypillian mountain.
No one has yet overcome my unheard-of patience,
Because behind patience there is Trypillia,
And behind Chernihiv there is Chernih.
Chernih is fearsome, very black.
As soon as night falls,
Chernih gets into a black boat and casts black fishing nets.
And those stumps and roots, bared by spring floods,
And the golden evening light in the
green curls of the pine.
And those years that have galloped past,
and that steamer and mountain…
Are but invisible piers in the Dnipro’s deep memory.

I

Hij trok het schuifke open,
Het knaapje stond aan zijn zij,
En zag het uurwerk liggen:
“Och, Grootvader, geef het mij?”

“Ik zal ’t u wel eens geven,
Toekomende jaar misschien,
Als gij wel leert en braaf zijt,”
Zei de oude, “wij zullen zien.”

“Toekomend jaar!” sprak het knaapje,
“O Grootvader, maar dan zoudt
Ge lang reeds kunnen dood zijn;

II

Daar was een grafje gedolven;
De scholieren stonden er rond,
En een oude man boog met moeite
Nog ene knie naar de grond.

Het koele morgenwindje
Speelde om zijn haren zacht;
Het gele kistje zonk neder:
Arm knaapje, wie had dat gedacht!

Hij keerde terug naar zijn woning,
De oude vader, en weende zo zeer,
En lei het zilvren uurwerk
In ’t oude schuifken weer.

Zijn laatste roman The Expedition of Humphry Clinker verscheen in 1771.

Uit: The Expedition of Humphry Clinker

RESPECTED SIR,

    I have received your esteemed favour of the 13th ultimo, whereby it appeareth, that you have perused those same Letters, the which were delivered unto you by my friend, the reverend Mr Hugo Behn; and I am pleased to find you think they may be printed with a good prospect of success; in as much as the objections you mention, I humbly conceive, are such as may be redargued, if not entirely removed — And, first, in the first place, as touching what prosecutions may arise from printing the private correspondence of persons still living, give me leave, with all due submission, to observe, that the Letters in question were not written    and sent under the seal of secrecy; that they have no tendency to the mala fama, or prejudice of any person whatsoever; but rather to the information and edification of mankind: so that it becometh a sort of duty to promulgate them in usum publicum. Besides, I have consulted Mr Davy Higgins, an eminent attorney of this place, who, after due inspection and consideration, declareth, That he doth not think the said Letters contain any matter which will be held actionable in the eye of the law. Finally, if you and I should come to a right understanding, I do declare in verbo sacerdotis, that, in case of any such prosecution, I will take the whole upon my own shoulders, even quoad fine and imprisonment, though, I must confess, I should not care to undergo flagellation: Tam ad turpitudinem, quam ad amaritudinem poenoe spectans — Secondly, concerning the personal resentment of Mr Justice Lismahago, I may say, non flocci facio — I would not willingly vilipend any Christian, if, peradventure, he deserveth that epithet: albeit, I am much surprised that more care is not taken to exclude from the commission all such vagrant foreigners as may be justly suspected of disaffection to our happy constitution, in church and state — God forbid that I should be so uncharitable, as to affirm, positively, that the said Lismahago is no better than a Jesuit in disguise; but this I will assert and maintain, totis viribus, that, from the day he qualified, he has never been once seen intra templi parietes, that is to say, within the parish church.
