“Bij de meeste slakkensoorten hebben alle individuen een rechtsgewonden slakkenhuis – dat wil zeggen dat de mondopening van de slak beneden aan de rechterkant zit […] maar een enkele maal komt er een linksgewonden exemplaar voor. Wanneer huisjesslakken paren worden ze in hun mogelijkheden beperkt doordat ze zo asymmetrisch zijn gebouwd, het huisje zit in de weg, vooral als het zoals bij de wijngaardslak een bolle vorm heeft. De geslachtsorganen van rechtsgewonden slakken zijn achter de rechterkant van hun kop geplaatst. Parende slakken wrijven net zo lang met de koppen tegen elkaar aan totdat hun genitale openingen contact maken, waardoor wederzijdse bevruchting mogelijk wordt. Het is een tijdrovend gedoe dat dagen in beslag kan nemen. Maar het kan nog erger. Wanneer een zeldzaam linksgewonden exemplaar met een rechtsgewonden slak probeert te copuleren, volgt een geslijm dat maandenlang kan duren en, vertaald in mensentermen, nog het meest doet denken aan een kabinetsformatie. Wekenlang schurken de slakken tegen elkaar aan en proberen de ander, op zoek naar hun respectieve geslachtsopeningen, de juiste wang toe te keren. Tevergeefs.”

Sixty years old and considered a true prophetess by their many friends and neighbors, Hannah Lively believed absolutely in the power of the crystal, therefore Matthew didn’t tell her that he had had to spin it eleven times before it finally pointed West. He reckoned the stone just needed warming up.“

“Es war vor sechs, sieben Jahren, als ich in einem der Kreise des Gouvernements T. lebte, auf dem Herrenhof des Gutsbesitzers Belokurow, eines jungen Mannes, der sehr früh aufstand, in einem Schoßrock herumlief, den Abend mit Biertrinken zubrachte und sich stets bei mir beklagte, daß er nirgends und bei niemandem Anerkennung finde. Er wohnte in einem Nebengebäude im Garten und ich im alten Herrenhaus, in einem riesigen Salon mit Säulen, in dem es außer einem breiten Diwan, auf dem ich schlief, sowie einem Tisch, an dem ich meine Patiencen legte, sonst keine weiteren Möbel gab. Sogar bei ruhigem Wetter brummte hier immer etwas in den alten Amossow-Öfen, und bei Gewitter bebte das ganze Haus, als ob es zerbersten wollte, und das war ein wenig unheimlich, besonders nachts, wenn die zehn großen Fenster plötzlich alle vom Blitz erleuchtet wurden.

Vom Schicksal zu stetigem Müßiggang verurteilt, tat ich rein gar nichts. Stundenlang pflegte ich aus meinen Fenstern den Himmel, die Vögel und die Alleen zu betrachten, alles zu lesen, was mir die Post brachte, und zu schlafen. Manchmal verließ ich das Haus und streifte bis zum späten Abend irgendwo umher. Einmal, auf dem Heimweg, geriet ich zufällig auf ein mir unbekanntes Landgut. Die Sonne ging gerade unter, und auf dem blühenden Roggen breiteten sich die abendlichen Schatten aus. Zwei Reihen alter, dicht gepflanzter, sehr hoher Tannen standen da wie zwei massive Mauern und bildeten eine schöne dunkle Allee. Mit Leichtigkeit kletterte ich über den Zaun und ging die Allee entlang, auf einer mehrere Zentimeter dicken Tannennadelschicht gleitend, die hier den Erdboden bedeckte. Es war finster und still, nur hoch oben in den Baumwipfeln zitterte hier und da ein heller goldener Schein und ließ ein Spinnennetz in den Farben des Regenbogens schillern. Es roch stark, fast beklemmend, nach Tannennadeln.

“They’re standing next to each other in the kitchen. Kunicki is dicing up parsley. He doesn’t really want to get into it again, but he can’t restrain himself.  He can feel the words swelling up in his throat, and he can’t quite swallow them back down. Meaning the old “Well then what did happen?” yet again.

She says in a tired voice, pointing out in a tone of I’m-reciting-this-yet-again that he’s being boring, that he’s making things difficult, “Here you go, one more time: I didn’t feel well, I think I had food poisoning, I told you.”

But he doesn’t give up so easily. “You didn’t feel sick when you went off,” he says.

“Right, but then I got sick, I got sick,” she repeats, with pleasure. “And I guess I passed out for a minute, and then the baby started crying, and that brought me to again. He was scared, and I was scared, too. We started toward the car, but just because of everything we ended up going the wrong way.”

“Which way? Into town? Toward Vis?”

“Yes, toward Vis. No, I mean, I don’t know, whether toward Vis or not, how was I supposed to know, if I had known, I would have come back, I’ve told you this a thousand times.” She raises her voice. “When I figured out I had gotten us lost, we just sat down in this little grove, and the baby fell asleep. I was still feeling weak…”

Kunicki knows she’s lying. He dices the parsley up and says in a sepulchral voice, not raising his eyes from the cutting board, “There was no grove.”

She just about screams, “Of course there was!”

“No, there wasn’t. All there was were individual olive trees and vineyards. What grove?”

There’s a silence, and then she suddenly says with deadly seriousness, “Okay. You’ve cracked it. Good job. We were carried off by a flying saucer. They did experiments on us. They implanted chips in us, here,” and she lifts up her hair to reveal the nape of her neck. Her gaze is icy.”

in wezen lagen jullie in de weg

„Our Cuban variant of the Spanish language is a spicy potato dish in which, among others the Spanish, the indo-West Indian, and the African of Yoruba, Bantu or Carabali origin have combined, just to mention only three African linguistic sources, in view of which we should also assume an objective position, not an embarrassing or discriminatory one. The world “chévere”, very Cuban, is used today in many countries in the Americas, where it arrived by way of Cuban music; however, it’s barely used in Cuba now. “Asere” and “ecobio”, also of African roots, have expanded as ways of addressing people, particularly the first one, among our youngsters since the 1960’s. Today, their use is common in Cuban vocabulary and not necessarily poor Cubans. They’re contributions from other languages that have been gradually incorporated into the Cuban Spanish and that are part of our culture. Words coming from religious systems or fraternity and mutual help societies like the Abakuá Society, but that have acquired a new semantic value, according to the persons using them and the intention with which they do. 

Between all of us, we have gradually elaborated this rich spicy dish throughout the long cooking process identifying us as the Cuban linguistic community. We’re not defending the use or abuse of vernacular words, because “Cuban” means not only what is popular, picturesque, and vulgar; that’s not only a very narrow conception, but a wrong one. Cuban is also what is educated, more elaborate.”
