“Well, He say, real slow, I can’t let you have Nettie. She too young. Don’t know nothing but what you tell her. Sides, I want her to git some more schooling. Make a schoolteacher out of her. But I can let you have Celie. She the oldest anyway. She ought to marry first. She ain’t fresh tho, but I spect you know that. She spoiled. Twice. But you don’t need a fresh woman no how. I got a fresh one in there myself and she sick all the time. He spit, over the railing. The children git on her nerve, she not much of a cook. And she big already.
Mr. __ he don’t say nothing. I stop crying I’m so surprise.
She ugly. He say. But she ain’t no stranger to hard work. And she clean. And God done fixed her. You can do everything just like you want to and she ain’t gonna make you feed it or clothe it.

Mr. ___ still don’t say nothing. I take out the picture of Shug Avery. I look into her eyes. Her eyes say Yeah, it bees that way sometime.
Fact is, he say, I got to git rid of her. She too old to be living here at home. And she a bad influence on my other girls. She’d come with her own linen. She can take that cow she raise down there back of the crib. But Nettie you flat out can’t have. Not now. Not never.
Mr. ___ finally speak. Clearing his throat. I ain’t never really look at that one, he say.
Well, next time you come you can look at her. She ugly. Don’t even look like she kin to Nettie. But she’ll make the better wife. She ain’t smart either, and I’ll just be fair, you have to watch her or she’ll give away everything you own. But she can work like a man.
Mr. ___ say How old she is?
He say, She near twenty. And another thing-She tell lies.”

Je me relâchai complètement.
Je me cambrai brusquement.

Dreams

I do not care to talk to you although
Your speech evokes a thousand sympathies,
And all my being’s silent harmonies
Wake trembling into music. When you go
It is as if some sudden, dreadful blow
Had severed all the strings with savage ease.
No, do not talk; but let us rather seize
This intimate gift of silence which we know.
Others may guess your thoughts from what you say,
As storms are guessed from clouds where darkness broods.
To me the very essence of the day
Reveals its inner purpose and its moods;
As poplars feel the rain and then straightway
Reverse their leaves and shimmer through the woods.

Before Dawn

Life! Austere arbiter of each man’s fate,
By whom he learns that Nature’s steadfast laws
Are as decrees immutable; O pause
Your even forward march! Not yet too late
Teach me the needed lesson, when to wait
Inactive as a ship when no wind draws
To stretch the loosened cordage. One implores
Thy clemency, whose wilfulness innate
Has gone uncurbed and roughshod while the years
Have lengthened into decades; now distressed
He knows no rule by which to move or stay,
And teased with restlessness and desperate fears
He dares not watch in silence thy wise way
Bringing about results none could have guessed.

Uit: Kokoro (Vertaald door Edwin McClellan)

“My inn was in a rather out-of-the-way district of Kamakura, and if one wished to indulge in such fashionable pastimes as playing billiards and eating ice cream, one had to walk a long way across rice fields. If one went by rickshaw, it cost twenty sen. Remote as the district was, however, many rich families had built their villas there. It was quite near the sea also, which was convenient for swimmers such as myself.

I walked to the sea every day, between thatched cottages that were old and smoke-blackened. The beach was always crowded with men and women, and at times the sea, like a public bath, would be covered with a mass of black heads. I never ceased to wonder how so many city holiday-makers could squeeze themselves into so small a town. Alone in thisnoisy and happy crowd, I managed to enjoy myself, dozing on the beach or splashing about in the water.

It was in the midst of this confusion that I found Sensei. In those days, there were two tea houses on the beach. For no particular reason, I had come to patronize one of them. Unlike those people with their great villas in the Hase area who had their own bathing huts, we in our part of the beach were obliged to make use of these tea houses which served also as communal changing rooms. In them the bathers would drink tea, rest, have their bathing suits rinsed, wash the salt from their bodies, and leave their hats and sunshades for safe-keeping. I owned no bathing suit to change into, but I was afraid of being robbed, and so I regularly left my things in the tea house before going into the water.”

Hallo, hiero!

Hallo, hiero, jij bènt ‘r eentje!
Jij kom toch ook uit Rotterdam?
Weet jij nog van de luizekam?
En zeg jij worteltje of peentje?

Ik ging als jochie fikkie stoken!
Ik kocht een krosie voor een cent!
Die Bep van Klaveren, zo’n vent!
En jôh, me moe maar kroten koken!

Hé, weet je nog die Hoogstraat dan?
Precies 1 kilometer lang!
Schiedamsedijk! Die meiden!

En hop, de hol op met zo’n kar!
En toen, die bommen op je knar!
Dat waren nog eens tijden…

Lofdicht op de kast

O, als de kast toch niet bestond,
waar moesten wij dan alles laten?
De Bijbel en de Beatlesplaten,
Claus, Heine… alles op de grond.

De mooie schelpen die je vond,
de badhanddoeken, hebbedingen,
de honderden herinneringen…
ze zwierven maar zo’n beetje rond.

Maar zie: de uitgevonden kast
houdt alle zaken waardevast,
rein, veilig en bereikbaar.

Het album, bloesjes, leukoplast,
de kast bewaart, o ja, de kast
is echt onvergelijkbaar.
