De intocht

Bosranden; belynxte daken. Veestapel mild bestierd,

op munten verstomd, bliksemend weerlicht op mijlpalen;

Overwonnenen. Maar nu bestonden wij pas. Hoe machtig
hun wereld waarin bliksems heersten, getemde tekens
die alles verlichten! Wij staken de koppen bij elkaar.

Doods Droom Doos

Wat je niet denkt of raadt
Wat niet op je afrijdt
Op weg of straat, slaapt nog
In de Doods Droom Doos

Wat je niet zegt of vermoedt
Wat je niet overpeinst
Schenkt je zoeter dan room
Doods, Doods Droom Doos

Genadige hoop, concreter

Paniek.

Waarna men weer het enge grootje
beffen wou. En in de hoek
haar afgezette benen.

Sluitende man I

Gulls

My townspeople, beyond in the great world,
are many with whom it were far more
profitable for me to live than here with you.
These whirr about me calling, calling!
and for my own part I answer them, loud as I can,
but they, being free, pass!
I remain! Therefore, listen!
For you will not soon have another singer.

First I say this: you have seen
the strange birds, have you not, that sometimes
rest upon our river in winter?
Let them cause you to think well then of the storms
that drive many to shelter. These things
do not happen without reason.

And the next thing I say is this:
I saw an eagle once circling against the clouds
over one of our principal churches—
Easter, it was—a beautiful day!
three gulls came from above the river
and crossed slowly seaward!
Oh, I know you have your own hymns, I have heard them—
and because I knew they invoked some great protector
I could not be angry with you, no matter
how much they outraged true music—

You see, it is not necessary for us to leap at each other,
and, as I told you, in the end
the gulls moved seaward very quietly.

Postlude

Now that I have cooled to you
Let there be gold of tarnished masonry,
Temples soothed by the sun to ruin
That sleep utterly.
Give me hand for the dances,
Ripples at Philae, in and out,
And lips, my Lesbian,
Wall flowers that once were flame.

Your hair is my Carthage
And my arms the bow,
And our words arrows
To shoot the stars
Who from that misty sea
Swarm to destroy us.

But you there beside me—
Oh, how shall I defy you,
Who wound me in the night
With breasts shining
Like Venus and like Mars?
The night that is shouting Jason
When the loud eaves rattle
As with waves above me
Blue at the prow of my desire.

Uit: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

“He walks to one of the card games, tips an Acute’s cards up with a thick, heavy finger, and squints at the hand and shakes his head.
“Yessir, that’s what I came to this establishment for, to bring you birds fun an’ entertainment around the gamin’ table. Nobody left in that Pendleton Work Farm to make my days interesting any more, so I requested a transfer, ya see. Needed some new blood. Hooee, look at the way this bird holds his cards, showin’ to everybody in a block; man! I’ll trim you babies like little lambs.”
Cheswick gathers his cards together. The redheaded man sticks his hand out for Cheswick to shake.
“Hello, buddy; what’s that you’re playin’? Pinochle? Jesus, no wonder you don’t care nothin’ about showing your hand. Don’t you have a straight deck around here? Well say, here we go, I brought along my own deck, just in case, has something in it other than face cards—and check the pictures, huh? Every one different. Fifty-two positions.”
Cheswick is pop-eyed already, and what he sees on those cards don’t help his condition.
“Easy now, don’t smudge ‘em; we got lots of time, lots of games ahead of us. I like to use my deck here because it takes at least a week for the other players to get to where they can even see the suit. …”
He’s got on work-farm pants and shirt, sunned out till they’re the color of watered milk. His face and neck and arms are the color of oxblood leather from working long in the fields. He’s got a primer-black motorcycle cap stuck in his hair and a leather jacket over one arm, and he’s got on boots gray and dusty and heavy enough to kick a man half in two. He walks away from Cheswick and takes off the cap and goes to beating a dust storm out of his thigh. One of the black boys circles him with the thermometer, but he’s too quick for them; he slips in among the Acutes and starts moving around shaking hands before the black boy can take good aim.”

Uit: Meat and vegetables

We missen hem echt.’
2000 exemplaren of 2500? Of 1500?

Prophets

Prophets have light
Screwed tight in their eyes. They cannot see the darkness
Inside their own loincloth. Their speech has grace
And their voice tenderness. When prophets arrive
Dogs do not bark. They only wag their tails
Like newspaper reporters. Their tongues hang out
And drool as profusely
As editorials.
Crowds in the street
Split up like watermelons
When prophets arrive.

But there are times when even the fuse of heavenly stars is blown
Space boils like a forgotten kettle
The screw comes off from the eyes
And the blinded prophet is stunned
It is then that he comprehends the spiral staircase of heaven made of iron
The complexity of its architecture.

It is the first time that he apprehends God’s inhuman boredom
And the size of His shoes. The weight of His foot.
And the total monopoly reflected
In His every movement. It is then that he realises that
His journey so far is only
The space and time of His almighty yawn.

Avoir mon tombeau
Au fin fond de l’eau
Où Paris reflète

Dormir en ces prairies

Dormir en ces prairies
Où les cerises sont
Comme de ronds glaçons
A manger non cueillies

Dormir comme angéliques
En un amoureux lit
Le ventre tout rempli
De sèves magnifiques

Dormir au monde indigne
Le laissant au sommeil
Quand vers notre réveil
Les soirs nous feront signes

Dormir avec toi j’erre
Puisqu’ainsi tu m’aimas
De perdre en cinémas
La moitié de ma terre

Uit: Wild Girls

“My hometown, Swan River, could have been known for murder the way Chicago is known for pizza, Roswell for aliens.
It was our thing, our trivia fact, and it occurs to me now that if the Chamber of Commerce had known what they were doing, people could have come to us the way they go to the Massachusetts town where Lizzie Borden axed her parents. Not that we had any murderers who were as famous as Lizzie Borden, but we did have a pattern: teenage girls, usually between the ages of sixteen and eighteen, who killed and pillaged with the abandon of lifelong criminals. There was Margaret Reid, burning her parents’ farm in the 1890 ’s; Angie Davenport, rolling a car full of her high school classmates into a ravine; Misty Greco, smashing up the hardware store in the heat of a midsummer day. You never knew when a teenage girl would take it into her head to shove a shiv into somebody’s stomach, or cave in the back of their skull with a well-tossed brick.
In Swan River, we called these hellions the wild girls. I heard about them first from other kids, on the playground and at Girl Scout camp in the summer. With the hoods of sleeping bags pulled up over their heads, the older girls whispered about our homegrown terrors. The wild girls were reported to be able to fly. It was said that though their preferred weapon was fire, they could kill in any way they chose; some had strangled or drowned their victims, or bitten and torn their skin until they bled to death. Since people rarely saw a wild girl and survived, it wasn’t exactly clear what they looked like, and no one knew what triggered the change of an ordinary teenager to one of these fierce creatures. There was no clear cause, no toxic sludge in the drinking water. It was just something about our town-the high wooded ridges, the valleys where abandoned farms slowly decayed to the earth. There was a spirit here, dark and uncontainable, and once it got into you it wouldn’t let you go.
You had to talk to other kids about the wild girls, because the institutions of our town-the sheriff, the newspaper-preferred to act like they didn’t exist. They pretended that when Misty Greco killed four people in half an hour, it was just a regular murder, comparable to a school shoofing spree. But we knew that adults understood what was really happening, even if they never said so. As my sister Maggie said, when you turned sixteen everybody started to look at you as if you were the suicide bomber at the checkpoint, the enemy in disguise”.
