Uit: A Walk In The Woods

We hiked till five and camped beside a tranquil spring in a small, grassy clearing in the trees just off the trail. Because it was our first day back on the trail, we were flush for food, including perishables like cheese and bread that had to be eaten before they went off or were shaken to bits in our packs, so we rather gorged ourselves, then sat around smoking and chatting idly until persistent and numerous midgelike creatures (no-see-ums, as they are universally known along the trail) drove us into our tents. It was perfect sleeping weather, cool enough to need a bag but warm enough that you could sleep in your underwear, and I was looking forward to a long night’s snooze–indeed was enjoying a long night’s snooze–when, at some indeterminate dark hour, there was a sound nearby that made my eyes fly open. Normally, I slept through everything–through thunderstorms, through Katz’s snoring and noisy midnight pees–so something big enough or distinctive enough to wake me was unusual. There was a sound of undergrowth being disturbed–a click of breaking branches, a weighty pushing through low foliage–and then a kind of large, vaguely irritable snuffling noise.
Bear!

I sat bolt upright. Instantly every neuron in my brain was awake and dashing around frantically, like ants when you disturb their nest. I reached instinctively for my knife, then realized I had left it in my pack, just outside the tent. Nocturnal defense had ceased to be a concern after many successive nights of tranquil woodland repose. There was another noise, quite near“.

Yusuf the Tall loved all his children equally
, with a passionate adoration that, when he thought about it, sometimes made him lachrymose. If his life were like a garden, then his daughters would be like the roses growing alongside its walls, and his sons would be like young trees that formed a palisade against the world. When they were small he devoted happy hours to their entertainment, and when they grew older he hugged them until their eyes bulged and they thought that their ribs would crack. He had grown to love his wife too, partly because this is what happens when a wife is well chosen, and partly because from her loins had sprung these brooks and becks of happiness.

But now Yusuf the Tall did not know what to do with his hands. It seemed as though they were behaving on their own. The thumb and middle finger of his left hand stroked across his eyeballs, meeting at the bridge of his nose. It was comforting, perhaps, for a scintilla of time. There was no comfort longer than that in this terrible situation. Sometimes his hands lay side by side on his face, the tips of his thumbs touching the lobes of his ears. He had thrown off his fez so that they could stroke his hair backwards, coming to rest on the back of his neck. The maroon fez lay in a corner on its side, so that his wife Kaya kept glancing at it. Despite this awful emergency, and the drama in which she was caught up, her instinct was to tidy it away, even if it were only to set it upright. She sat on the low divan, kneading her fingers, biting her lip and looking up at her husband. She was as helpless as one who stands before the throne of God.”

We may as well begin with the ride home.

It is Christmas night, 1998. The ending of a day that was not unseasonable, except in its failure to fulfill the sentimental wish for spur-of-the moment snow. The sky: gray; the air: cold, with a high of 33 degrees Fahrenheit. Palpable winter but not winter at its worst. Fewer of the poor than usual died on that day of causes traceable to the weather. Perhaps the relatively unimpressive showing of weather-related deaths was due to the relative clemency of the air, the relative windlessness, the relative benevolence that could be counted on by the poor to last, perhaps, eight days, December twenty-fourth through the first of January.

Ten o’clock Christmas night. Four friends drive south on the way home after a day of celebration. They have had Christmas dinner at the house of other friends, a weekend and vacation house in the mountains north of New York. One couple sits in the front of a brown Honda Accord, the other in the back. They are all in their fifties. All of their children are on other continents: one in Brazil, working on an irrigation project; one in Japan, teaching English; one in Ireland studying the Irish language at Trinity College. They were determined not to have a melancholy Christmas, and for the most part they have not.

They leave Maria Meyers off first since she lives in the most northerly part of the city or, as they would say, the farthest uptown.

She opens the door of her apartment on the sixth or top floor of a building on the corner of La Salle Street and Claremont Avenue, a block west of Broadway, a block south of 125th Street, on the margins of Harlem, at the tip end of the force field of Columbia University. Before she takes off her brown boots lined with tan fur, her green down coat, her rose-colored scarf, her wool beret, also rose, she sees the red light of her answering machine.”

Uit: The Back Room (Vertaald door Helen Lane)

… AND YET I’D swear that the position was the same-I think I’ve always slept this way, with my right arm underneath the pillow and my body turned slightly over onto that side, my feet searching for the place where the sheet is tucked in. What’s more, if I close my eyes – and I end up closing them as a last, routine resort – I am visited by a long-familiar apparition, always the same: a parade of stars, each with a clown’s face, that go soaring up like a balloon that’s escaped and laugh with a frozen grin, following one after the other in a zigzag pattern, like spirals of smoke gradually becoming thicker and thicker. There are so many of them that in a little while there won’t be any room left for them and they’ll have to descend to seek more space in the riverbed of my blood, and then they’ll be petals that the river carries away. At the moment they’re rising in bunches. I see the minuscule face drawn in the center of each one of them, like a cherry pit surrounded by spangles. But what never changes is the tune that accompanies the ascent, a melody that can’t be heard yet marks the beat, a special silence whose very denseness makes it count more than it would if it could be heard. This was the most typical thing back then too. I recognized that strange silence as being the prelude to something that was about to happen. I breathed slowly, I felt my insides pulsing, my ears buzzing, and my blood locked in. At any moment – where exactly? – that ascending multitude would fall and swell the invisible inner flow like an intravenous drug, capable of altering all my visions. And I was wide awake, awaiting the prodigious change, so lightning-quick that there was never a night when I managed to trap the very instant of its sudden stealthy appearance as I lay in wait there, watching for it eagerly and fearfully, just as I’m doing now.

At This Moment Of Time

Some who are uncertain compel me. They fear

The Ace of Spades. They fear

Loves offered suddenly, turning from the mantelpiece,

Sweet with decision. And they distrust

The fireworks by the lakeside, first the spuft,

Then the colored lights, rising.

Tentative, hesitant, doubtful, they consume

Greedily Caesar at the prow returning,

Locked in the stone of his act and office.

While the brass band brightly bursts over the water

They stand in the crowd lining the shore

Aware of the water beneath Him. They know it. Their eyes

Are haunted by water

Disturb me, compel me. It is not true

That “no man is happy,” but that is not

The sense which guides you. If we are

Unfinished (we are, unless hope is a bad dream),

You are exact. You tug my sleeve

Before I speak, with a shadow’s friendship,

And I remember that we who move

Are moved by clouds that darken midnight.

Late Autumn In Venice

(After Rilke)

The city floats no longer like a bait

To hook the nimble darting summer days.

The glazed and brittle palaces pulsate and radiate

And glitter. Summer’s garden sways,

A heap of marionettes hanging down and dangled,

Leaves tired, torn, turned upside down and strangled:

Until from forest depths, from bony leafless trees

A will wakens: the admiral, lolling long at ease,

Has been commanded, overnight — suddenly –:

In the first dawn, all galleys put to sea!

Waking then in autumn chill, amid the harbor medley,

The fragrance of pitch, pennants aloft, the butt

Of oars, all sails unfurled, the fleet

Awaits the great wind, radiant and deadly.

Rosewater

When you reach that other world, don’t become a cloud,

don’t become a cloud, and the bitter star of dawn,

so that your mother knows you, waiting at her door.

Take a wand of willow, a root of rosemary,

a root of rosemary, and be a moonlit coolness

falling in the midnight in your thirsting courtyard.

I gave you rosewater to drink, you gave me poison,

eaglet of the frost, hawk of the desert.

Genossen!

Uit: The Dog Department

I am not a dog lover. A dog lover to me means a dog that is in love with another dog. I am a great admirer of certain dogs, just as I am an admirer of certain men, and I dislike certain dogs as much as I dislike certain men. Mr. Stanley Walker” in his attack on dogs brought out the very sound contention that too much sentimental gush has been said and written about man’s love for the dog and the dog’s love for man. (This gush, I should say, amounts to about one ten-thousandth of the gush that has been printed and recited about man’s love for woman, and vice versa, since Shelley wrote “0′ lift me from the grass! I die, I faint, I fall! Let thy love in kisses rain on my lips and eyelids pale.”) It is significant that none of the gush about dogs has been said or written by dogs. I once showed a copy of Senator Vest’s oration to one of my dogs and he sniffed at it and walked away. No dog has ever gone around quoting any part of it. We see, then, that this first indictment of dogs ‘ that they have called forth so much sentimental woofumpoofum ‘ is purely and simply an indictment of men. I think we will find this to be true of most of Mr. Walker’s indictments against the canine world: he takes a swing at dogs and socks men and women in the eye.

Mr. Walker began his onslaught with a one-sided and prejudiced account of how a little red chow on a leash (the italics are mine) pulled a knife on Mr. Gene Fowler, a large red man who has never been on a leash in his life. Neither the dog nor the woman who was leading the dog are quoted; we dont get their side of the brawl at all. The knife was not evenexamined for paw prints. Nobody proved anything. There isnt a judge in the world who wouldn’t have thrown the case out of court, probably with a sharp reprimand for Mr. Fowler. So far, then, Mr. Walker hasn’t got a leg to stand on.“

VOICE OF LIFE

Dear bird, you are the voice of life itself,
A living melody that calls to us
With untaught ecstasy; that sings a joy
Inherited with being, glorious.
Like girls at play, like laughter of a boy,
Your song derides the tired and baffled brain
That thinks itself to death; you sing again
With the immortal freshness of a breath
From morning stars above the mist of pain
That clings to song about the fields of earth.

What dusty thresholds to what vacant ears
Your ecstasy might sweep with song; what dearth
Of music starves them through long, silent years,
Who are eclipsed from you by birth!
Now from this lonely moor you have sprung up
Beyond our need, to pour; pour higher yet
Your melody into that tilted cup
Which all about with clustered gems is set.
Now I can hear it spilling back again,
Melodious excess through my casement bars,
Oh, what delirious madrigals are these
To wither out to nothing twixt the stars!
Such perfect music, and no ideal ear?
Listen! It is the earth that needs to hear.

Ballad Of Tailor Nils

If you were born before yesterday,

Surely you’ve heard about Tailor Nils, who flaunts him so gay.

If it’s more than a week that you’ve been here,

Surely you’ve heard how Knut Storedragen got a lesson severe.

Up on the barn of Ola-Per Kviste after a punchin’:

“When Nils heaves you again, take with you some luncheon.”

Hans Bugge, he was a man so renowned,

Haunting ghosts of his name spread alarm all around.

“Tailor Nils, where you wish to lie, now declare!

On that spot will I spit and lay your head right there.”–

“Oh, just come up so near, that I know you by the scent!

Think not that by your jaw to earth I shall be bent!”

When first they met, ’t was scarce a bout at all,

Neither man was ready yet to try to get a fall.

The second time Hans Bugge slipped his hold.

“Are you tired now, Hans Bugge? The dance will soon be bold.”

The third time Hans fell headlong, and forth the blood did spurt.

“Why spit you now so much, man?” — “Oh my, that fall did hurt!”–

Saw you a tree casting shadows on new-fallen snow?

Saw you Nils on a maiden smiling glances bestow?

Have you seen Tailor Nils when the dance he commences?

Are you a maiden, then go!–It’s too late, when you’ve lost your senses.

Acte I

Scène I

Lucienne, Pontagnac.

„So far as written records tell us, Hernando de Soto and his companions in arms were the first white men to enter and explore the territory now known on the map as the State of Georgia. Tradition has small voice in the matter, but such as it has tells another story. There are hints that other white men ventured into this territory before De Soto and his men beheld it. General Oglethorpe, when he came to Georgia with his gentle colony, which had been tamed and sobered by misfortune and ill luck, was firmly of the opinion that Sir Walter Raleigh, the famous soldier, sailor, and scholar, had been there before him. So believing, the founder of the Georgian Colony carried with him Sir Walter’s diary. He

was confirmed in his opinion by a tradition, among the Indians of the Yamacraw tribe, that Raleigh had landed where Savannah now stands.

There are also traditions in regard to the visits of other white men to Georgia. These traditions may be true, or they may be the results of dreams, but it is certain that De Soto and his picked company of Spaniards were the first to march through the territory that is now Georgia. The De Soto expedition was made up of the flower of Spanish chivalry,–men Used to war, and fond of adventure. Some of them were soldiers, anxious to win fame by feats of arms in a new land; some were missionaries, professing an anxiety for the souls of such heathen as they might encounter, but even these men were not unfamiliar with the use of the sword; some were physicians, as ready to kill as to heal; some were botanists, who knew as much about the rapier and the poniard as they did about the stamens, pistils, and petals of the flowers; and some were reporters, men selected to write the history of the expedition.“

Laat andren ’t roemrijk Rhodos, Mytilene
of Ephesus bezingen of Corinthe,

of ’t Bacchisch Thebe, ’t Apollinisch Delphi,

ons wenkt, daar gaan wij heen, mijn kameraden!

Small bird singing in a bush

Small bird in a bush:
cars in the street rush
past it like the Gadarene swine,
line upon line.

Soft feathers fluff
in a lean wind, rough
as a rasp in the leaves’ green,
brooming the earth clean.

Cognisant of none
save the strengthening sun,
the blood of its dawn
still red on the hill,

it sings and it sings,
repetitive rings
and showers of sound
seeming profound

to the shallows in me,
but, in reality,
only a bird’s things:
sex and seed, rain on the wings,

consciousness of wamth and light,
withdrawal of the night,
the wind’s suddenness,
or its silences.

All this I know,
and no less know
its innocence, my prescience,
and which the better sense,
and which the finer face,
and which the saving grace:
self-seeking orison
or this simple hymnal to the sun?

Franz(etwas stockend).

“I’ll tell you another, last case—and there are many others like this. Here’s a story which is really tragic. How many of you know about Joan Peters, the book by Joan Peters? There was this best-seller a few years ago [in 1984], it went through about ten printings, by a woman named Joan Peters—or at least, signed by Joan Peters—called From Time Immemorial. It was a big scholarly-looking book with lots of footnotes, which purported to show that the Palestinians were all recent immigrants [i.e. to the Jewish-settled areas of the former Palestine, during the British mandate years of 1920 to 1948]. And it was very popular—it got literally hundreds of rave reviews, and no negative reviews: the Washington Post, the New York Times, everybody was just raving about it. Here was this book which proved that there were really no Palestinians! Of course, the implicit message was, if Israel kicks them all out there’s no moral issue, because they’re just recent immigrants who came in because the Jews had built up the country. And there was all kinds of demographic analysis in it, and a big professor of demography at the University of Chicago [Philip M. Hauser] authenticated it. That was the big intellectual hit for that year: Saul Bellow, Barbara Tuchman, everybody was talking about it as the greatest thing since chocolate cake.Well, one graduate student at Princeton, a guy named Norman Finkelstein, started reading through the book. He was interested in the history of Zionism, and as he read the book he was kind of surprised by some of the things it said. He’s a very careful student, and he started checking the references—and it turned out that the whole thing was a hoax, it was completely faked: probably it had been put together by some intelligence agency or something like that. Well, Finkelstein wrote up a short paper of just preliminary findings, it was about twenty-five pages or so, and he sent it around to I think thirty people who were interested in the topic, scholars in the field and so on, saying: “Here’s what I’ve found in this book, do you think it’s worth pursuing?”

You Have to Fear the Rose . . .

You have to fear the rose; it is the mouth
of the wound that bleeds continually inside you.

Because my tongue, oh naked one, can’t find you.
Tell me you are afraid, I’ll believe you exist.

That you exist in yourself; conscious of your body.
The body is a shutter the gentlest breeze’s hand

can turn into a windowpane of blood.
A firestorm will seize the neighboring district,

burn out the eyes of every newborn baby,
while the blind, grieving mothers lose their hair.

Tell me then, so that only my hair can hear you,
so that my skin can tell the lips, with a quick shudder

of whisper, whether you still live in this muddy person;
before I’ve flowed through it entirely, tell me.

Apology

For blows on the fort of evil
That never shows a breach,
For terrible life-long races
To a goal no foot can reach,
For reckless leaps into darkness
With hands outstretched to a star,
There is jubilation in Heaven
Where the great dead poets are.

There is joy over disappointment
And delight in hopes that were vain.
Each poet is glad there was no cure
To stop his lonely pain.
For nothing keeps a poet
In his high singing mood
Like unappeasable hunger
For unattainable food.

So fools are glad of the folly
That made them weep and sing,
And Keats is thankful for Fanny Brawne
And Drummond for his king.
They know that on flinty sorrow
And failure and desire
The steel of their souls was hammered
To bring forth the lyric fire.

Lord Byron and Shelley and Plunkett,
McDonough and Hunt and Pearse
See now why their hatred of tyrants
Was so insistently fierce.
Is Freedom only a Will-o’-the-wisp
To cheat a poet’s eye?
Be it phantom or fact, it’s a noble cause
In which to sing and to die!.

So not for the Rainbow taken
And the magical White Bird snared
The poets sing grateful carols
In the place to which they have fared;
But for their lifetime’s passion,
The quest that was fruitless and long,
They chorus their loud thanksgiving
To the thorn-crowned Master of Song.

Alors j’ai vu tes gros yeux doux

Tu m’as caressé doucement la tête

Uit: The Book of the Courtier

In this way affectation is avoided or hidden; and now you can see how incompatible it is with gracefulness and how it robs of charm every movement of the body or of the soul, about which, admittedly, we have so far said very little. However, we should not neglect it; for, as the soul is far more worthy than the body, it deserves to be all the more cultivated and adorned. As for what our courtier ought to do in this respect, we shall leave aside the precepts of all the many wise philosophers who have written on the subject, defining the virtues of the soul and discussing their worth with such subtlety; instead, keeping to our purpose, we shall state very simply that it is enough if he is, as we say, a man of honour and integrity. For this includes prudence, goodness, fortitude and temperance of soul, and all the other qualities proper to so honourable a name. And I believe that he alone is a true moral philosopher who wishes to be good; and for this he needs few precepts other than the ambition itself. Therefore Socrates was perfectly right in affirming that in his opinion his teaching bore good fruit when it encouraged someone to strive to know and understand virtue; for those who have reached the stage where they desire nothing more eagerly than to be good have no trouble in learning all that is necessary. So I shall say no more about this.”

SYMBOLS

I WATCHED a rosebud very long

Brought on by dew and sun and shower,

Waiting to see the perfect flower:

Then, when I thought it should be strong,

It opened at the matin hour

And fell at evensong.

I watched a nest from day to day,

A green nest full of pleasant shade,

Wherein three speckled eggs were laid:

But when they should have hatched in May,

The two old birds had grown afraid

Or tired, and flew away.

Then in my wrath I broke the bough

That I had tended so with care,

Hoping its scent should fill the air;

I crushed the eggs, not heeding how

Their ancient promise had been fair:

I would have vengeance now.

But the dead branch spoke from the sod,

And the eggs answered me again:

Because we failed dost thou complain?

Is thy wrath just? And what if God,

Who waiteth for thy fruits in vain,

Should also take the rod?

DE PROFUNDIS

OH why is heaven built so far,

Oh why is earth set so remote?

I cannot reach the nearest star

That hangs afloat.

I would not care to reach the moon,

One round monotonous of change;

Yet even she repeats her tune

Beyond my range.

I never watch the scatter’d fire

Of stars, or sun’s far-trailing train,

But all my heart is one desire,

And all in vain:

For I am bound with fleshly bands,

Joy, beauty, lie beyond my scope;

I strain my heart, I stretch my hands,

And catch at hope.

Vandaag vriend

I Have Come To You Delighted

I have come to you, delighted,

To tell you that sun has risen,

That its light has warmly started

To fulfil on leaves its dancing;

To tell you that wood’s awaken

In its every branch and leafage,

And with every bird is shaken,

Thirsty of the springy image;

To tell you that I’ve come now,

As before, with former passion,

That my soul again is bound

To serve you and your elation;

That the charming breath of gladness

Came to me from all-all places,

I don’t know what I’ll sing, else,

But my song’s coming to readiness.

With One Firm Thrust

With one firm thrust to force the boat of living

From off the sands, and, by a wave tossed high,

Be toward a new life borne, a new beginning,

To feel the wind from scented shores sweep nigh,

To wake from torpid sleep a mind turned sluggish,

To revel in the strange and the unknown,

To lend fresh breath to life, and joy to anguish,

To make another’s cares and griefs your own,

To speak of things it numbs the tongue to utter,

To fire the timid heart that fierce ’tmay pound –

This can the chosen songsmith do, no other,

And ’tis for this that he is known and crowned!

“Just to watch the front-page news out of Los Angeles during a Santa Ana is to get very close to what it is about the place.  The longest single Santa Ana period in recent years was in 1957, and it lasted not the usual three or four days but fourteen days, from November 21 until December 4.  On the first day 25,000 acres of the San Gabriel Mountains were burning, with gusts reaching 100 miles an hour.  In town, the wind reached Force 12, or hurricane force, on the Beaufort Scale; oil derricks were toppled and people ordered off the downtown streets to avoid injury from flying objects.  On November 22 the fire in the San Gabriels was out of control.  On November 24 six people were killed in automobile accidents, and by the end of the week the Los Angeles Times was keeping a box score of traffic deaths.  On November 26 a prominent Pasadena attorney, depressed about money, shot and killed his wife, their two sons and himself.  On November 27 a South Gate divorcée, twenty-two, was murdered and thrown from a moving car.  On November 30 the San Gabriel fire was still out of control, and the wind in town was blowing eighty miles an hour.  On the first day of December four people died violently, and on the third the wind began to break.

It is hard for people who have not lived in Los Angeles to realize how radically the Santa Ana figures in the local imagination.  The city burning is Los Angeles’s deepest image of itself.  Nathaniel West perceived that, in The Day of the Locust, and at the time of the 1965 Watts riots what struck the imagination most indelibly were the fires.  For days one could drive the Harbor Freeway and see the city on fire, just as we had always known it would be in the end.  Los Angeles weather is the weather of catastrophe, of apocalypse, and, just as the reliably long and bitter winters of New England determine the way life is lived there, so the violence and the unpredictability of the Santa Ana affect the entire quality of life in Los Angeles, accentuate its impermanence, its unreliability.  The winds shows us how close to the edge we are.”

“Secrets are my currency: I deal in them for a living. The secrets of desire, of what people really want, and of what they fear the most. The secrets of why love is difficult, sex complicated, living painful and death so close and yet placed far away. Why are pleasure and punishment closely related? How do our bodies speak? Why do we make ourselves ill? Why do you want to fail? Why is pleasure hard to bear?

A woman has just left my consulting room. Another will arrive in twenty minutes. I adjust the cushions on the analytic couch and relax in my armchair in a different silence, sipping tea, considering images, sentences and words from our conversation, as well as the joins and breaks between them.

As I do often these days, I begin to think over my work, the problems I struggle with, and how this came to be my livelihood, my vocation, my enjoyment. It is even more puzzling to me to think that my work began with a murder — today is the anniversary, but how do you mark such a thing? — followed by my first love, Ajita, going away forever.

I am a psychoanalyst. In other words, a reader of minds and signs. Sometimes I am called shrinkster, healer, detective, opener of doors, dirt digger or plain charlatan or fraud. Like a car mechanic on his back, I work with the underneath or understory: fantasies, wishes, lies, dreams, nightmares — the world beneath the world, the true words beneath the false. The weirdest intangible stuff I take seriously; I’m into places where language can’t go, or where it stops — the “indescribable” — and early in the morning too.

Giving sorrow other words, I hear of how people’s desire and guilt upsets and terrorises them, the mysteries that burn a hole in the self and distort and even cripple the body, the wounds of experience, reopened for the good of the soul as it is made over.”

Uit: About Alice

I once wrote that tales about writers’ families tend to have a relation to real life that can be expressed in terms of standard network-television fare, on a spectrum that goes from sitcoms to Lifetime movies, and that mine were sitcoms. Now that I think of it, maybe they were more like the Saturday-morning cartoons. Alice played the role of the mom—the voice of reason, the sensible person who kept everything on an even keel despite the antics of her marginally goofy husband. Years ago, at a conference of English teachers where we were both speakers, the professor who did the introductions said something like “Alice and Bud are like Burns and Allen, except she’s George and he’s Gracie.” Yes, of course, the role she played in my stories was based on the role she played in our family—our daughters and I sometimes called her T.M., which stood for The Mother—but she didn’t play it in the broad strokes of a sitcom mom. Also, she was never completely comfortable as the person who takes responsibility for keeping things on an even keel; that person inevitably misses out on some of the fun. (“I feel the need to break out of the role of straight person,” she said in a Nation review of Alice, Let’s Eat that cautioned readers against abandoning long-planned European vacations in order to scour the country for “the perfect roast polecat haunch.”) The sitcom presentation sometimes made her sound stern as well as wise, and she was anything but stern. She had something close to a child’s sense of wonderment. She was the only adult I ever knew who might respond to encountering a deer on a forest path by saying, “Wowsers!”

Beauty And Toil

There she sweats on the road, a beauteous, restless lass,

In scorching sun she breaks the stones, her bangles clink and clash.

what pain is it so strangely mingling with the music,

At each stroke drops of tears trickle down her eyes.

Dust-splattered are her cheeks, her locks embroiled in dust,

Her deep depressed eyes a tender grace reflect.

The blood-red sun sucks her blood without a touch of ruth,

Each heavey hammer stroke tells upon her budding youth.

In the sun her fragrant locks are flying about adrift,

Her limber self is getting wrecked amid the stones and bricks.

Ruddy rays of the sun are drinking undefied,

nectar of narcissus’ eyes, the wine of frangipani cheeks.

Clouds of sorrow heavily hang o’er her tender heart,

Are these her cheeks, or roses two which are fading fast?

Through her tatters can be glimpsed her youthful shape, sorrow-gripped,

Like the moon that wanders through bits of drifting clouds.

Sonette an Orpheus

Das V. Sonett

Errichtet keinen Denkstein. Lasst die Rose
nur jedes Jahr zu seinen Gunsten blühn.
Denn Orpheus ists.

sich drängt, ganz unten, anders, wie er ist;
nicht ausgestoßen und nicht eingereiht,
und wie im Zweifel seine Wirklichkeit
weggebend an das Bild, das er vergißt,

um dennoch immer wieder sein Gesicht
hineinzuhalten, fast mit einem Flehen,
beinah begreifend, nah am Einverstehen
und doch verzichtend: denn er wäre nicht.

Archaischer Torso Apollos

und flimmerte nicht so wie Raubtierfelle;

Earring

As a butterfly
so slowly ripples
a spotless lily of exquisite curves,

just so this earring,
this wild, strange earring,
dances, plays with its shadow and swerves.
May that soft air
breathed in your shadow
return to the source from whence it had gushed!
And may your swaying
stir up a breeze,
by which the overhot heart is refreshed!
Oh, earring, ’tis magic
that set you in motion,
or is it those lips in motion below?

Who feeds on the sherbet
of life without death,
and with the small soul above binds her soul?

„But the Erewhonians think differently; the store they set by this hypothetic language can hardly be believed; they will even give any one a maintenance for life if he attains a considerable proficiency in the study of it; nay, they will spend years in learning to translate some of their own good poetry into the hypothetical language — to do so with fluency being reckoned a distinguishing mark of a scholar and a gentleman. Heaven forbid that I should be flippant, but it appeared to me to be a wanton waste of good human energy that men should spend years and years in the perfection of so barren an exercise, when their own civilisation presented problems by the hundred which cried aloud for solution and would have paid the solver handsomely; but people know their own affairs best. If the youths chose it for themselves I should have wondered less; but they do not choose it; they have it thrust upon them, and for the most part are disinclined towards it. I can only say that all I heard in defence of the system was insufficient to make me think very highly of its advantages.

The arguments in favour of the deliberate development of the unreasoning faculties were much more cogent. But here they depart from the principles on which they justify their study of hypothetics; for they base the importance which they assign to hypothetics upon the fact of their being a preparation for the extraordinary, while their study of Unreason rests upon its developing those faculties which are required for the daily conduct of affairs.“

„But here, as in so many other cases, Germany, learned, indefatigable, deep-thinking Germany comes to our aid. It is, after all, a blessing that, in these revolutionary times, there should be one country where abstract Thought can still take shelter; that while the din and frenzy of Catholic Emancipations, and Rotten Boroughs, and Revolts of Paris, deafen every French and every English ear, the German can stand peaceful on his scientific watch-tower; and, to the raging, struggling multitude here and elsewhere, solemnly, from hour to hour, with preparatory blast of cow-horn, emit his _Horet ihr Herren und lasset’s Euch sagen_; in other words, tell the Universe, which so often forgets that fact, what o’clock it really is. Not unfrequently the Germans have been blamed for an unprofitable diligence; as if they struck into devious courses, where nothing was to be had but the toil of a rough journey; as if, forsaking the gold-mines of finance and that political slaughter of fat oxen whereby a man himself grows fat, they were apt to run goose-hunting into regions of bilberries and crowberries, and be swallowed up at last in remote peat-bogs. Of that unwise science, which, as our Humorist expresses it,

                   “By geometric scale

Doth take the size of pots of ale;”

still more, of that altogether misdirected industry, which is seen vigorously thrashing mere straw, there can nothing defensive be said“.

Mittag

Des Tages Melodram will sich entfalten,
mit Sang und Klang den hohen Weg beschreiten;

I Shall Soon Fall Prey To Rot

I shall soon fall prey to rot.

Though it’s hard to die, it’s good to die;

I shall ask for no one’s pity,

And there’s no one who would pity me.

With my lyre I won no glory

For my noble family name;

And I die as distant from my people

As the day that I began to live.

&n
bsp;

Ties of friendship, unions of the heart-

All are broken: from my youth,

Fate has sent me foes implacable,

While my friends all perished in the struggle.

Their prophetic songs were left unfinished,

They fell victim to misfortune, were betrayed

In the bloom of life; and now their portraits watch me

From the walls, reproachfully.

The Mourner

As to war’s terrors and alarms I list,
When some new victim hath his life-blood shed,
‘Tis not his wife I pity, nor his friend,
Nor grieve I for the hero who is dead.

The wife in time will cease to mourn her loss,
The best of friends and comrades will forget;
But there is one who will remember him
Even unto her grave, with eyes still wet.

Amid our trivial, hypocritic lives,
The only tears all holy and sincere
That I have seen, are those by mothers shed,
Who sorrow for their children, ever dear.

Their children on the bloody field who fell
They ne’er forget, but mourn them all their days.
Like are they to the weeping willow tree,
That never can its drooping branches raise.

Uit: Under Western Eyes

“To begin with I wish to disclaim the possession of those high gifts of imagination and expression which would have enabled my pen to create for the reader the personality of the man who called himself, after the Russian custom, Cyril son of Isidor—Kirylo Sidorovitch—Razumov.

If I have ever had these gifts in any sort of living form they have been smothered out of existence a long time ago under a wilderness of words. Words, as is well known, are the great foes of reality. I have been for many years a teacher of languages. It is an occupation which at length becomes fatal to whatever share of imagination, observation, and insight an ordinary person may be heir to. To a teacher of languages there comes a time when the world is but a place of many words and man appears a mere talking animal not much more wonderful than a parrot.

This being so, I could not have observed Mr. Razumov or guessed at his reality by the force of insight, much less have imagined him as he was. Even to invent the mere bald facts of his life would have been utterly beyond my powers. But I think that without this declaration the readers of these pages will be able to detect in the story the marks of documentary evidence. And that is perfectly correct. It is based on a document; all I have brought to it is my knowledge of the Russian language, which is sufficient for what is attempted here. The document, of course, is something in the nature of a journal, a diary, yet not exactly that in its actual form. For instance, most of it was not written up from day to day, though all the entries are dated. Some of these entries cover months of time and extend over dozens of pages. All the earlier part is a retrospect, in a narrative form, relating to an event which took place about a year before.”

Hendriks moeder stierf in 1820.

DREAM

I dreamt we were walking

free among the dead

Bombs had flattened the sky

The earth was on fire

We crawled into a hole you

laid your head on my breast

laughed, and touched me with desire

I thought, are we dead?

Is this heaven, this place full of

bodies?I wanted to ask but

you kissed me instead

CONVERSATION

We were talking

as if we had never been dumb

It was summer and the goldengroves

stood silent in the heat

upright and gleaming

We were doing the talking:

franglais deutsch oder russisch vielleicht

Ich weiß nicht mehr

and it doesn’t matter

Words like ringing golden coins

dropped from your mouth onto the wooden table

under the oak trees all bright and breathing

the summer twilight goes on

and on unleaving

I sometimes pass by Rosales and see that so little has changed. The people are the same, victims of their own circumstances as Old David, Angel, Ludovico, and even Father had all been. God, should I think and feel, or should I just plod on and forget? I know in the depths of me that I’ll always remember, and I am not as tough as they were. Nor do I have the humor and the zest to cope as Tio Marcelo did, looking at what I see not as an apocalypse but as revelation; as he said once, paraphrasing a Spanish poet, he was born on a day that God was roaring drunk.

I think that I was born on a day God was fast asleep. And whatever happened after my birth was nothing but dreamless ignorance. But there was a waking that traumatized, a waking that also trivialized, because in it, the insolence and the nastiness of human nature became commonplace and I grew up taking all these as inevitable. In the end, the satisfaction that all of us seek, it seems, can come only from our discovering that we really have molded our lives into whatever we want them to be. In my failure to do this, I could have taken the easy way out, but I have always been too much of a coward to covet my illusions rather than dispel them.

I continue, for instance, to hope that there is reward in virtue, that those who pursue it should do so because it pleases them. This then becomes a very personal form of ethics, or belief, premised on pleasure. I would require no high-sounding motivation, no philosophical explanation for the self, and its desires are animal, basic – the desire for food, for fornication. If this be the case, then we could very well do away with the church, with all those institutions that pretend to hammer into human being attributes that would make him inherit God’s vestments, if not His kingdom.

Die noch die alte Kraft der Säfte schwellte;

Und doch ist keine Hoffnung mehr, die gälte;

Zur Blüte bringt dein Blick, was ohnegleichen,

Nie hat mein Singen solches Glück gefunden;

On me dessina, on m’interviewa, on me biographia.

Uit: Jeppe of the hill (Vertaald door Oscar James Campbell, jr.)

NILLE. I hardly believe there’s such another lazy lout in all the village as my husband, it’s as much as I can do to get him up in the morning by pulling him out of bed by the hair. The scoundrel knows to-day is market-day, and yet he lies there asleep at this hour of the morning. The pastor said to me the other day, “Nille, you are much too hard on your husband; he is and he ought to be the master of the house.” But I answered him, “No, my good pastor! If I should let my husband have his way in the household for a year, the gentry wouldn’t get their rent nor the pastor his offering, for in that length of time he would turn all there was in the place into drink.

Ought I let a man rule the household who is perfectly ready to sell his belongings and wife and children and even himself for brandy?”

The pastor had nothing to say to that, but stood there stroking his chin. The bailiff agrees with me, and says, “My dear woman, pay no attention to the pastor. It’s in the wedding-service, to be sure, that you must honor and obey your husband, but it’s in your lease, which is more recent than the service, that you shall keep up your farm and meet your rent–a thing you can never do unless you haul your husband about by the hair every day and beat him to his work.”

I pulled him out of bed just now and went out to the barn to see how things were getting along, when I came in again, he was sitting on a chair, asleep, with his breeches–saving your presence–pulled on

one leg; so the switch had to come down from the hook, and my good Jeppe got a basting till he was wide awake again. The only thing he is afraid of is “Master Eric,” as I call the switch. Hey, Jeppe, you

cur, haven’t you got into your clothes yet? Would you like to talk to Master Eric some more? Hey, Jeppe! Come in here!”

Holokauston

Ook in de herfst hielden we
ons als rovers op in de duinen

met haren vol zand en mist
en de opmerkelijke ernst
van een bende tienjarigen
riepen we oktober uit
tot de maand van het bloed

de dappersten onder ons
sneden met een ruk hun vingers
aan het helmgras, de rest kleurde
met het sap van braambessen
de handen rood

op een klein, cirkelvormig altaar
van schelpen en gedroogde bladeren
verbrandden we joelend een dode mus

als je tien bent ruikt de dood
nooit weeïg, wel scherp en rabiaat,
alsof de wereld brandt.

AQUAREL (voor Danaë)

maandag

Elk begin is heilig zwanger

ook dit
geknetter van insectenvleugels, dit gekras
op rijstpapier, het trage en nagelblanke
losknopen van je bloes, het druppen
van zonlicht op je schouders.

(Je navel
is een nauwe doodsspelonk
waarin gorgonen lonken, mijn galjoenen
krakend stranden, een duivelsnest
van beendermeel en afgehakte
handen).

„When the lights went off the accompanist kissed her. Maybe he had been turning towards her just before it was completely dark, maybe he was lifting his hands. There must have been some movement, a gesture, because every person in the living room would later remember a kiss. They did not see a kiss, that would have been impossible. The darkness that came on them was startling and complete. Not only was everyone there certain of a kiss, they claimed they could identify the type of kiss: it was strong and passionate, and it took her by surprise. They were all looking right at her when the lights went out. They were still applauding, each on his or her feet, still in the fullest throes of hands slapping together, elbows up. Not one person had come anywhere close to tiring. The Italians and the French were yelling, “Brava! Brava!” and the Japanese turned away from them. Would he have kissed her like that had the room been lit? Was his mind so full of her that in the very instant of darkness he reached for her, did he think so quickly? Or was it that they wanted her too, all of the men and women in the room, and so they imagined it collectively. They were so taken by the beauty of her voice that they wanted to cover her mouth with their mouth, drink in. Maybe music could be transferred, devoured, owned. What would it mean to kiss the lips that had held such a sound?

Some of them had loved her for years. They had every recording she had ever made. They kept a notebook and wrote down every place they had seen her, listing the music, the names of the cast, the conductor. There were others there that night who had not heard her name, who would have said, if asked, that opera was a collection of nonsensical cat screechings, that they would much rather pass three hours in a dentist’s chair. These were the ones who wept openly now, the ones who had been so mistaken.“

I have to admit Im not feeling my best. Not that Im doing so bad. Not that I really have anything to complain about. Not that I would actually verbally complain if I did have something to complain about. No. Because Im Thinking Positive/Saying Positive. Im sitting back on my haunches, waiting for people to poke in their heads. Although its been thirteen days since anyone poked in their head and Janets speaking English to me more and more, which is partly why I feel so, you know, crummy.

Jeez, she says first thing this morning. Im so tired of roast goat I could scream.

What am I supposed to say to that It puts me in a bad spot. She thinks Im a goody-goody and that her speaking English makes me uncomfortable. And shes right. It does. Because weve got it good. Every morning, a new goat, just killed, sits in our Big Slot. In our Little Slot, a book of matches. Thats better than some. Some are required to catch wild hares in snares. Some are required to wear pioneer garb while cutting the heads off chickens. But not us. I just have to haul the dead goat out of the Big Slot and skin it with a sharp flint. Janet just has to make the fire. So things are pretty good. Not as good as in the old days, but then again, not so bad.

In the old days, when heads were constantly poking in, we liked what we did. Really hammed it up. Had little grunting fights. Whenever I was about to toss a handful of dirt in her face Id pound a rock against a rock in rage. That way she knew to close her eyes. Sometimes she did this kind of crude weaving. It was like: Roots of Weaving. Some-times wed go down to Russian Peasant Farm for a barbecue, I remember there was Murray and Leon, Leon was dating Eileen, Eileen was the one with all the cats, but now, with the big decline in heads poking in, the Russian Peasants are all elsewhere, some to Administration but most not, Eileens cats have gone wild, and honest to God sometimes I worry Ill go to the Big Slot and find it goatless.

They should have been in her purse, but they weren’t, and so she’d made a circuit of the apartment — two circuits, three — before she thought to look through the pockets of the jeans she’d worn the day before, but where were they ? No time for toast. Forget the toast, forget food. She was out of orange juice. Out of butter and cream cheese. The newspaper on the front mat was just another obstacle. Piss-warm — was that an acceptable term? Yes — piss-warm coffee in a stained mug, a quick check of lipstick and hair in the rearview mirror, and then she was putting the car in gear and backing out onto the street.
She may have been peripherally aware of a van flitting by in the opposite direction, the piebald dog sniffing at a stain on the edge of the pavement, someone’s lawn sprinkler holding the light in a shimmer of translucent beads, but the persistent beat of adrenaline — or nerves, or whatever it was — wouldn’t allow her to focus. Plus, the sun was in her eyes, and where were her sunglasses? She thought she remembered seeing them on the bureau, in a snarl of jewelry — or was it the kitchen table, next to the bananas, and she’d considered taking a banana with her, fast food, potassium, roughage, but then she figured she wouldn’t because with Dr. Stroud it was better to have nothing at all in your stomach. Air. Air alone would sustain her.“

An Laura

Dich schaun, weil ich dich liebe,

dich schaun, weil du mich haßt,

denn tödlich sind, ich weiß es,

die Reize die du hast.

Dich schaun, o welche Wonne

zu schaun dein Angesicht.

An deiner trotzigen Schönheit

zu sterben scheu ich nicht.

Dich schaun – es könnt geschehen

für einen Augenblick,

was ich dir gab und gebe,

du gäbst es mir zurück.

Dann würdest du erfahren,

wie grausam ist der Spaß,

wenn Liebe widerwillig

vergolten wird mit Haß.

Vielleicht wirst du bereuen

all deine Grausamkeit,

denn Liebe, die halbherzig:

erzeugt nur Liebesleid.

A Sonnet to Form

There is some subtle, imperious connection

Between the flower’s perfume and silhouette,

Such is the diamond’s invisible perfection

Until the facets make it animate.

So are the images of ever changing fancies,

That, like the clouds, in the heavens race,

Turned into stone, they exist for centuries

In a fulfilled, exactly chiselled phrase.

And I belief, that all my dear dreams,

That have attained the world of word and light,

May find for them the long-awaited brims.

And may my friend, in every poem’s site

Take full delight in sweetness of a rime

And in beauty of its letters’ streams.

Obligations

1898

I don’t have any my obligations,

But the real assurance in me.

This idea has not validations,

Only love helps its rightness to see.

They are endless — the ways of perfection,

Keep each moment of life strong and safe!

This world has only single attraction —

To become a better man than you self.

Strong detest, cold apathy, gentleness —

Your life’s road consists of these few.

It is good, flying into the endless,

To observe you yourself behind you.

Das Schwalbenbuch (fragment)

Wann endlich, Tiere, bündet Ihr Euch

Zum Bunde,wider die Menschheit?

Ich, ein Mensch,

Rufe Euch auf!

Euch Nachtigallen, geblendet mit glühender Nadel,

Euch Hammel, gewürgt in Kasematten vergaster Übungsschiffe,

Euch Esel, sanfteste Tiere, zusammenbrechend unter Peitschenhieben,

Euch Strauße, zuckenden Atems gerupft und fühlenden Herzens,

Euch Pferde, sonnenlos werkend in verpesteten Schächten,

Euch Alle Euch Alle

Rufe ich auf!

Erwachet!

Rächen wollen wir

Die Opfer des Menschen:

Tiere für Gaumenkitzel atmend gefoltert,

Tiere für Modelaunen lachend geschunden,

Tiere berauschten Arenen eitel geopfert,

Tiere in Kriegen sinnlos zerfetzt…

M e n s c h.

Uit: Rupert Brooke’s Obituary in The Times (26 april 1915)

Rupert Brooke is dead. A telegram from the Admiral at Lemnos tells us that this life has closed at the moment when it seemed to have reached its springtime. A voice had become audible, a note had been struck, more true, more thrilling, more able to do justice to the nobility of our youth in arms engaged in this present war, than any other more able to express their thoughts of self-surrender, and with a power to carry comfort to those who watch them so intently from afar. The voice has been swiftly stilled. Only the echoes and the memory remain; but they will linger.

During the last few months of his life, months of preparation in gallant comradeship and open air, the poet-soldier told with all the simple force of genius the sorrow of youth about to die, and the sure triumphant consolations of a sincere and valiant spirit. He expected to die: he was willing to die for the dear England whose beauty and majesty he knew: and he adva
nced towards the brink in perfect serenity, with absolute conviction of the rightness of his country’s cause and a heart devoid of hate for fellow-men.

The thoughts to which he gave expression in the very few incomparable war sonnets which he has left behind will be shared by many thousands of young men moving resolutely and blithely forward in this, the hardest, the cruelest, and the least-rewarded of all the wars that men have fought. They are a whole history and revelation of Rupert Brooke himself. Joyous, fearless, versatile, deeply instructed, with classic symmetry of mind and body, ruled by high undoubting purpose, he was all that one would wish England’s noblest sons to be in the days when no sacrifice but the most precious is acceptable, and the most precious is that which is most freely proffered.“

Uit: OLD TIMES ON THE MISSISSIPPI

„Once a day a cheap, gaudy packet arrived upward from St. Louis, and another downward from Keokuk. Before these events had transpired, the day was glorious with expectancy; after they had transpired, the day was a dead and empty thing. Not only the boys, but the whole village, felt this. After all these years I can picture that old time to myself now, just as it was then: the white town drowsing in the sunshine of a summer’s morning; the streets empty, or pretty nearly so; one or two clerks sitting in front of the Water Street stores, with their splint-bottomed chairs tilted back against the wall, chins on breasts, hats slouched over their faces, asleep—with shingle-shavings enough around to show what broke them down; a sow and a litter of pigs loafing along the sidewalk, doing a good business in water-melon rinds and seeds; two or three lonely little freight piles scattered about the “levee;” a pile of “skids” on the slope of the stone-paved wharf, and the fragrant town drunkard asleep in the shadow of them; two or three wood flats at the head of the wharf, but nobody to listen to the peaceful lapping of the wavelets against them; the great Mississippi, the majestic, the magnificent Mississippi, rolling its mile-wide tide along, shining in the sun; the dense forest away on the other side; the “point” above the town, and the “point” below, bounding the river-glimpse and turning it into a sort of sea, and withal a very still and brilliant and lonely one. Presently a film of dark smoke appears above one of those remote “points;” instantly a negro drayman, famous for his quick eye and prodigious voice, lifts up the cry, “S-t-e-a-m-boat a-comin!'” and the scene changes!“

“With this Mrs. Rachel stepped out of the lane into the backyard of Green Gables.  Very green and neat and precise was that yard, set about on one side with great patriarchal willows and the other with prim Lombardies.  Not a stray stick nor stone was to be seen, for Mrs. Rachel would have seen it if there had been.  Privately she was of the opinion that Marilla Cuthbert swept that yard over as often as she swept her house.  One could have eaten a meal off the ground without overbrimming the proverbial peck of dirt.

Mrs. Rachel rapped smartly at the kitchen door and stepped in when bidden to do so.  The kitchen at Green Gables was a cheerful apartment–or would have been cheerful if it had not been so painfully clean as to give it something of the appearance of an unused parlor.  Its windows looked east and west; through the west one, looking out on the back yard, came a flood of mellow June sunlight; but the east one, whence you got a glimpse of the bloom white cherry-trees in the left orchard and nodding, slender birches down in the hollow by the brook, was greened over by a tangle of vines.  Here sat Marilla Cuthbert, when she sat at all, always slightly distrustful of sunshine, which seemed to her too dancing and irresponsible a thing for a world which was meant to be taken seriously; and here she sat now, knitting, and the table behind her was laid for supper.”

„MY FATHER had a small Estate in Nottinghamshire; I was the Third of five Sons. He sent me to Emanuel-College in Cambridge, at Fourteen Years old, where I resided three Years, and applyed my self close to my Studies: But the Charge of maintaining me (although I had a very scanty Allowance) being too great for a narrow Fortune; I was bound Apprentice to Mr. James Bates, an eminent Surgeon in London, with whom I continued four Years; and my Father now and then sending me small Sums of Money, I laid them out in learning Navigation, and other parts of the Mathematicks, useful to those who intend to travel, as I always believed it would be some time or other my Fortune to do. When I left Mr. Bates, I went down to my Father; where, by the Assistance of him and my Uncle John, and some other Relations, I got Forty Pounds, and a Promise of Thirty Pounds a Year to maintain me at Leyden: There I studied Physick two Years and seven Months, knowing it would be useful in long Voyages.“

Astrophel and Stella: LXIV

 No more, my dear, no more these counsels try;

Oh, give my passions leave to run their race;

Let Fortune lay on me her worst disgrace;

Let folk o’ercharg’d with brain against me cry;

Let clouds bedim my face, break in mine eye;

Let me no steps but of lost labour trace;

Let all the earth with scorn recount my case,

But do not will me from my love to fly.

I do not envy Aristotle’s wit,

Nor do aspire to Caesar’s bleeding fame;

Nor aught do care though some above me sit;

Nor hope nor wish another course to frame,

But that which once may win thy cruel heart:

Thou art my wit, and thou my virtue art.

The Necessity Of A New Heart

Now wouldst thou have a heart that tender is,

A heart that forward is to close with bliss;

A heart that will impressions freely take

Of the new covenant, and that will make

The best improvement of the word of grace,

And that to wickedness will not give place;

All this is in the promise, and it may

Obtained be of them that humbly pray.

Wouldst thou enjoy that spirit that is free,

And looseth those that in their spirits be

Oppressed with guilt, or filth, or unbelief;

That spirit that will, where it dwells, be chief;

Which breaketh Samson’s cord as rotten thread,

And raiseth up the spirit that is dead;

That sets the will at liberty to choose

Those things that God hath promis’d to infuse

Into the humble heart? All this, I say,

The promise holdeth out to them that pray.

In Reih und Glied

1890

Als ihr in eurem finstern Hasse
Das drohende Gesetz erdacht,
Das uns zu Deutschen zweiter Klasse
Mit einem Federstrich gemacht,
Da ward gefühlt und eingesehen
Von allen ohne Unterschied:
„Wir können hier nur widerstehen
In Reih und Glied.”

Wir ließen schweigend uns verdammen,
Verstoßen uns vom Vaterland,
Und schweigend rückten wir zusammen,
Bis Schulter man an Schulter stand.
An Spree und Belt, am Rhein, in Sachsen
Erklang der Gegner Unkenlied;

YOU

With you here, I had a zoological time.
At the sink I slobbered your nape

with bloodhound kisses, paw on each shoulder.
Was all meerkat for your key in the door.

In the shower I’d be robin, cheeping
my heart out from a steam-basted chest.

Under dawn duvets I was squirrel-whiskered –
fossicked and dug you, all
scratchy-toed.

Cold evenings, iguana, I’d slow-lick
lips, all-foured around your trunk.

And when you said I was your man
I brayed so they heard it in Bosotoland.

Now you’re gone, they cower under lock and key.
Come back. Bring out the animals in me.

IF YOU WERE TO COME BACK

I’d stand at the door like one bereaved:
Aghast and breathless,
With silence stretched between us
For a second
Before it snapped –
And my heart burst its banks
In belief.

Then I’d draw you in by both hands
I’d kiss you on the mouth, on the face
Wear out your name
with soft saying
I’d kiss you more than you would want
Until you’d have to draw back, breathless
As one wounded
To try to speak, to tell me
Why it was you came.

Uit: Christ Stopped at Eboli

“Christ did stop at Eboli, where the road and the railway leave the coast of Salerno and turn into the desolate reaches of Lucania. Christ never came this far, nor did time, nor the individual soul, nor hope, nor the relation of cause to effect, nor reason nor history. Christ never came, just as the Romans never came, content to garrison the highways without penetrating the mountains and forests, not the Greeks, who flourished beside the Gulf of Taranto. None of the pioneers of Western civilization brought here his sense of the passage of time, his deification of the State or that ceaseless activity which feeds upon itself. None has come to this land except as an enemy, a conqueror, or a visitor devoid of understanding.”

In America

I grew up, here in America
Where good people worked hard
And everyone got along
I thought things were fine, here in America
But I was wrong
It seems it’s all black and
white, here in America
Either the color of money, or
the color of your skin
Used to know wrong from
right, here in America

And we will again
We can all live together
With Christ as Lord
And us united in Him
We will all live forever
When the King of Kings comes again
Through the eyes of our God, I see America
With no black and white
None in bondage or free
Because Jesus is Lord, here in America
And He’ll always be- Oh yeah!
We can all live together
United in Him

Uit: Mere Christianity

„”I now come to that part of Christian morals where they differ  most sharply from all other morals.  There is one vice of which no man  in the world is free; which every one in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else; and of which hardly any people, except  Christians, ever imagine that they are guilty themselves.  I have  heard people admit that they are bad-tempered, or that they cannot keep their heads about girls or drink, or even that they are cowards.

I do not think I have ever heard anyone who was not a Christian accuse  himself of this vice.  And at the same time, I have very seldom met  anyone, who was not a Christian, who showed the slightest mercy to it  in others.  There is no fault which makes a man more unpopular, and no  fault which we are more unconscious of in ourselves.  And the more we  have it ourselves, the more we dislike it in others.

“The vice I am talking of is Price or Self-Conceit: and the  virtue opposite to it, in Christian morals, is called Humility.  You  many remember, when I was talking about sexual morality, I warned you that the centre of Christian morals did not lie there.  Well, now, we  have come to the centre.  According to Christian teachers, the  essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride.  Unchastity, anger, greed,  drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was  through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every  other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.“

Uit: A Wrinkle In TIme

“Now, don”t be frightened, loves,” Mrs. Whatsit said. Her plump little body began to shimmer, to quiver, to shift. The wild colors of her clothes became muted, whitened. The pudding-bag shape stretched, lengthened, merged. And suddenly before the children was a creature more beautiful than any Meg had even imagined, and the beauty lay in far more than the outward description. Outwardly Mrs. Whatsit was surely no longer a Mrs. Whatsit. She was a marble-white body with powerful flanks, something like a horse but at the same time completely unlike a horse, for from the magnificently modeled back sprang a nobly formed torso, arms, and a head resembling a man”s, but a man with a perfection of dignity and virtue, an exaltation of joy such as Meg had never before seen. No, she thought, it”s not like a Greek centaur. Not in the least.

From the shoulders slowly a pair of wings unfolded, wings made of rainbows, of light upon water, of poetry.

Calvin fell to his knees.

“No,” Mrs. Whatsit said, though her voice was not Mrs. Whatsit”s voice. “Not to me, Calvin. Never to me. Stand up.”

“Ccarrry themm,” Mrs. Which commanded.

With a gesture both delicate and strong Mrs. Whatsit knelt in front of the children, stretching her wings wide and holding them steady, but quivering. “Onto my back, now,” the new voice said.

The children took hesitant steps toward the beautiful creature.“

THE LIE

They ordered him to shoot a man.

The gun shone with fresh oil.

The doomed head shone with drops of sweat.

He aimed at the head of the doomed man.

A space divided them, then suddenly,

in the space, a dove fluttered.

He fired and the dove flew off, afraid.

The beating wings were white as the man

he shot and frightened to death.

Tall grass, touched by soft wind, rustled, wild.

“I’m hungry”, he said. That was a lie.

He lied until he died.

He woke in the night. The only light,

the luminous hands and numbers of his watch.

He picked up a cigarette.

His matches were in the other room. The door was closed.

He could not get up.

He saw a phosphorescent head that gaped

with false teeth. He could see the rubber gums.

The next day as he walked to work

he hummed an ancient waltz:

“Some matches, some matches, some matches…”

Several passerby turned and looked.

One of them was a young girl with blue eyes.

She was fatally ill with cancer of the lung.

They took her to the hospital soon after.

He turned the handle and the door opened.

Beyond it was another door.

He turned the handle and the other door

stood wide. He opened doors, a hundred and twenty-four.

Then he grew tired, and he collapsed.

Beyond the hundred and twenty-fifth

door, there is a garden where the roses

have just opened, he though, drowsily dying.

Beyond that door was another door.

Blonde

Do you know, blonde, that favor I solicit

when I cover the altars with offerings?

Not rich furnishings, not superb lands,

neither a table that flatters the apetite.

At the edge of Aragua I want a parcel

to supply me with simple pleasures,

and close to my rustic home

a brook that runs among the rocks.

To feel good around the summery warmth,

I also want my plot to have a grove,

where the proud coconut and the willow can grow.

I’ll be happy if in this refuge I die;

and, upon exhaling my fugitive breath,

I stamp on your lips my last goodbye!
