Citizen R. K. Doesn’t Live

Citizen R. K. doesn’t live
with his wife (or any object
that is his own), he doesn’t live by the pen,
by the indigestible fountain pen marked “Parker”
that sticks in his throat: he is a sado-
(he gulps the ink that streams
from the fountain pen marked “Parker”)
masochist (with this pen he revives the corpses
of days gone by, so as to harass
them): born (he doesn’t
know why): into a worker’s family, but just the same
he freeloads (on speech): an honorary
blood donor (does foreign blood flow
in his veins): against our
death penalty: he tried to smuggle
something across the border: a birth
certificate, his collective
organism, and a fountain pen (“Parker”): he
doesn’t jot down thoughts, he communicates telepathically
(there’s a snake
in his telephone) and he corrupts underaged
wristwatches: to fall asleep he counts to 19
84 (isn’t he counting on nothing?). He lives,
though it remains unclear
whether he deserves such a life

Uit: In Sunlight and in Shadow

“If you were a spirit, and could fly and alight as you wished, and time did not bind you, and patience and love were all you knew, then you might rise to enter an open window high above the park, in the New York of almost a lifetime ago, early in November of 1947.
After days of rain and unusual warmth, the skies are now the soft deep blue that is the gift of an oblique sun. The air is cool but not yet dense enough to carry sound sharply. From the playing fields, the cries and shouts of children are carried upward, sometimes clearly, sometimes muted, like murmurs, and always eventually to disappear. These sounds inexplicably convey the colors of the children’s jerseys, which seen from the eleventh storey are only bright flecks on grass made so green by recent rains and cool nights that it looks like wet enamel.
Coming in the window, you might wonder who had left it open, for the apartment is empty, its silence, to a spirit, thundering like a heartbeat. Perhaps you would turn back to glance at the gulls bobbing in the reservoir, as white as confetti, or to see how the façades of Fifth Avenue across the park and over the trees are lit by the sun in white, ochre, and briefly flaring yellow. The wind coming through the window, as you do, unseen, moves a shade to and fro as if gently breathing, its circular pull occasionally leaping up enough in contrary motion to tap against a pane as if it wants to speak. No one is in. In a breeze that enters and dies before it reaches the back rooms, you ride above particles of dust propelled across polished floors like snowflakes tumbling in a blizzard. In the air is a remnant of perfume, strongest by the door, as is often the case. The lights are off, the heat not yet been turned on, and the brass front-door lock silent and immobile, waiting to be turned and released.
In the room overlooking the park the bookshelves are full. Hanging above the fireplace is a Manet seascape with flags and pennants snapping in the wind; in a desk drawer beneath the telephone, a loaded pistol. And on an oval marble table in the entrance hall near the immobile lock and its expectant tumblers is a piece of card stock folded in half and standing like an A. Musical staffs are printed on the outside. Inside, sheltered as if deliberately from spirits, is a note waiting to be read by someone living. On the same smooth marble, splayed open but kept in a circle by its delicate gold chain, is a bracelet, waiting for a wrist.”

“Dezember.

Nichts in Bewegung.

Property Man.Yes sir, yes, at once. [A light comes down on to the stage.]
The Manager [clapping his hands]. Come along! Come along! Second act of “Mixing It Up.” [Sits down.] [The ACTORS and ACTRESSES go from the front of the stage to the wings, all except the three who are to begin the rehearsal.]
The Prompter [reading the “book”]. “Leo Gala’s house. A curious room serving as dining-room and study.”
The Manager [to PROPERTY MAN]. Fix up the old red room.
Property Man [noting it down]. Red set. All right!
The Prompter [continuing to read from the “book”]. “Table already laid and writing desk with books and papers. Book-shelves. Exit rear to Leo’s bedroom. Exit left to kitchen. Principal exit to right.”
The Manager [energetically]. Well, you understand: The principal exit over there; here, the kitchen. [Turning to actor who is to play the part of SOCRATES.] You make your entrances and exits here. [To PROPERTY MAN.] The baize doors at the rear, and curtains.
Property Man [noting it down]. Right!
Prompter [reading as before]. “When the curtain rises, Leo Gala, dressed in cook’s cap and apron is busy beating an egg in a cup. Philip, also dresesd as a cook, is beating another egg. Guido Venanzi is seated and listening.”

Men had weinig hoop mij in leven te houden.

van hooi en room de reuk tot in de keuken;

Afscheid

Het bos dat ik niet meer zie
is het bos dat ik in de aarde
van mijn geheugen bewaarde
met varens tot aan de knie.

Ik blijf wel de schoolknaap die
in schuilhoeken van geblaarte
onmetelijk moed vergaarde
en longen vol poëzie.

Ik ben om het even wie
maar ik adem mijn eigen aarde.

Uit: The Sixty-Five Years of Washington (Vertaald door Steve Dolph)

He, helpful and enthusiastic, went along to the station. That man who, ever since Leto has had use of his reason, has always been silent, distant, shut away with his unsuspected chimeras in his radio workshop, for the last month or so seems to have broken the bell jar that separated him from the outside world, and has come with them, seeming euphoric, close, warm, and open. Leto observes him at a distance, incredulous. At first the change was so sudden that, in his skepticism, he was sure it was some kind of joke, or a tactical transformation, but his persistence and his conviction to the role were so intense that Leto’s initial incredulity was replaced with doubt—is he? would he?—all that, no?, telling himself at the same time, but from then on without concrete ideas or words and almost without realizing it, though not only his mind but also his whole body are for some reason saturated with those senses that more and more resemble the shudder or the silent beating or the contraction of nerves, temples, veins, muscles, telling himself, he would say, but in that way, no?, that if it was a comedy the intended audience was Leto himself, because for Isabel, Lopecito, and the rest, who were convinced in advance, no persuasion was necessary—he, Leto no?—the only one who suspected that the man had something up his sleeve, that the man had realized—and decided I was the last obstacle to demolish before his magical circle could finally close, the straggler he had to force in before sealing, hermetically, from the inside, the capsule, and launching it into the interstellar space of his own delirium, Leto thinks, this time with clear and well-formed thoughts, walking, next to the Mathematician, always to the south, on the shady sidewalk, where, more and more frequently, the windows and doors of businesses are open. On a bright, warm, and calm November afternoon, the bus drives past rectangles of blue flax, of yellow sunflowers and green wheat, leaving behind, slow and regular, the repetitive uprights of the telegraph poles, while Leto, sitting next to the window, candidly observes Isabel who, in the seat ahead of him, calmly and serenely flips through the latest issue of Ms & Mrs. The comedy that Leto, after several weeks, has convinced himself is real, produces a tranquilizing and at the same time euphoric effect in Isabel, inasmuch as her old phantasms of marital bliss, upward mobility, sexual satisfaction, economic stability, familial harmony, religious tranquility, and physical well-being have seemed, in recent weeks, to have found their long-awaited substantiation, de–spite the resistance of a hostile world.”

„In this story, Sofia was a little like Poland.
Nicolas knew he would be the big loser in such an expansion. He already found it hard enough to make one woman come; the idea of having twice as much work, in the face of fierce competition, seemed more than he could handle. Unless, speaking purely technically, a transfer of competence occurred, which was something he absolutely didn’t want. Besides, how could he admit to his desire for another woman, right in front of Pauline? Let’s call this impulse erotic sovereignism, which would be the logical opposite of erotic federalism.
Erotic sovereignism might be thought infantile, and with good reason. Men, at least most of the time, are big children. Here’s proof: exhausted by all these considerations, which he suddenly found completely futile, Nicolas drank his coffee and went back to bed.
The architects of Europe thought that two things were essential for the people of the continent to feel European: a flag and an anthem. The matter of the flag was settled in 1955, and presented no particular difficulty. But that wasn’t the case with the anthem. People hoped a new world would emerge after the horror of the war, and a number of composers wanted to be part of that. They included a composer from Lyons named Jehane-Louis Gaudet. In 1949 he sent his Chant de la paix to the president of the Council of Europe and crossed his fingers. After all, wasn’t it a golden opportunity for an unknown artist to become famous?
After the Chant de la paix was presented to the Council, the president telephoned the composer to personally thank him for his contribution. Unfortunately, he said, it would be very difficult to adopt this magnificent composition as the European anthem.
“Why?” asked Gaudet in surprise.
“Because we are required to be unanimous.”
It turns out that on the day the council met, a little man with a mustache, a Dutchman from Rotterdam, had felt that the Chant de la paix was too…. The Council president had forgotten the word that had been used.
“Too what?” asked the composer. He felt a little annoyed, but was prepared to rewrite a few bars to satisfy the gentleman from Rotterdam if necessary”

“You looked distracted,” she said a little later. Feigning surprise, he put on a smile, as if to indicate that she was wrong: No, no, of course not. After all, he couldn’t very well admit to her that he had imagined the three of them in bed together, and that in his fantasy the third person looked like Sofia, the young Polish woman she’d introduced him to a few days before.
This wasn’t the first time that he’d fantasized about other women while making love to Pauline. (He would close his eyes, as if afraid of being caught in the act of infidelity, and let the film play under his eyelids.) Besides, he probably wasn’t the only person ever to seek fresh stimulation in more or less fictional images. He vividly remembered the period when the world was excitement without release (those long years of adolescence when he looked at girls but couldn’t approach them), but now he dreaded the reverse, to be locked in a world of release without excitement (being in a couple).
After two years of living together, he sometimes wondered if he and Pauline had reached the frontier of that peacefully settled world. No wonder his fantasy life was coming to the rescue of his daily lot. On the other hand, that he would include Pauline in the script was surprising. For better or for worse, she incarnated the antithesis of debauchery for him.
He asked himself the question somberly that morning, while making coffee: would he like to go to bed with Pauline and another woman? The idea, which had excited him a moment earlier, now seemed unpleasant and crude.
Here, a parallel with the Polish plumber must be drawn.
For the previous month, an anti-European PR campaign in all the French media had been stigmatizing the Polish plumber, making him symbolically responsible for unemployment in France. How could you fight him? He worked hard and cost much less. It was scandalous! It was unfair competition! Remember, the European Union had been built around the Franco-German couple. These were two countries who felt powerful, and by and large they got along pretty well. But weren’t they taking a fatal risk, it was suggested, by blindly rushing into the endless process of enlarging the European Union?
Let’s be even more concrete: if France and Germany welcome Poland into their bed, should they be surprised if Poland, which has a talent for plumbing, upsets their mutual balance?”

“The first indication that Pop had been seeing something more than heebie-jeebies for all those years came a few weeks before the end, when the old guy leaned over to Artie on the front porch of an autumn evening and said, distinctly, “Calamine.” Father and son had come out after dinner to sit together on this side of the screens and see November along. They enjoyed, in silence, one of those nights that hung in the high fifties but could easily go ten degrees either way within the hour. Artie staked out the rocker while his father, as usual, exercised eminent domain over the kapok bed long ago banished to the porch because chez Hobson-a twenty-year repository of everything the family had ever owned?could not take one more cubic foot of crap without spewing it all through every doorway and window.
Silence had gotten them this far, and there seemed to Artie no reason to improve on it. He tried to chalk up his father’s mumbled word to an involuntary spasm in the man’s cerebral cortex, a first burst of verb salad accompanying the return of autumn. He hoped, for a moment, to hide from it, let the word fall to the ground and add to the November earthworm-stink and autumn. But Artie had no place to hide from Pop that the old man himself hadn’t shown him. So he put his knuckles to the bridge of his nose, braced his face for what was coming, and asked, “Say what, Dad?”
“You heard me. Calamine. I say what I mean and I mean what I say. I plan my work and work my plan. When the tough get going, the . . .”
“Got you, Pop.” Artie preempted quickly, for once Edward Hobson, Sr., was let out of the verbal paddock, he could go all night without denting his capacityfor free association. After a quarter century, Artie knew the symptoms. In the man’s present condition, it was pointless to ask him straight out just what he meant by the Word. Artie tried reconstructing: Calamine, zinc oxide, iodine-nothing in that direction. Dad’s invocation was certainly not a medical request. Dad abhorred all medications. His sickness was nothing so trivial or topical as dermatitis, except that in crowds, for the express purpose of publicly shaming any other Hobson with him, he had been known to sing, “It’s no sin to shake off your skin and go dancing in your bones.”

Mercian Hymns XXV

Brooding on the eightieth letter of Fors Clavigera, I speak this in
memory of my grandmother, whose childhood and prime womanhood were spent
in the nailer’s darg.

The nailshop stood back of the cottage, by the fold. It reeked stale
mineral sweat. Sparks had furred its low roof. In dawn-light the
troughed water floated a damson-bloom of dust —

not to be shaken by posthumous clamour. It is one thing to celebrate the
‘quick forge’, another to cradle a face hare-lipped by the searing wire.

Brooding on the eightieth letter of Fors Clavigera, I speak this in
memory of my grandmother, whose childhood and prime womanhood were spent
in the nailer’s darg.

Mercian Hymns XVII

He drove at evening through the hushed Vosges. The car radio,
glimmering, received broken utterance from the horizon of storms…

‘God’s honours – our bikes touched: he skidded and came off.’ ‘Liar.’ A
timid father’s protective bellow. Disfigurement of a village king. ‘Just
look at the bugger…’

His maroon GT chanted then overtook. He lavished on the high valleys its
haleine.

in koorzangboeken hevig gepenseeld.

»Was?«, knurrte er.
»So! Das Wort gefällt dir nicht. Was würdest du denn sagen?«

A Nocturne

Like weary sea-birds spent with flight
And faltering,
The slow hours beat across the night
On leaden wing.
The wild bird knows where rest shall be
Soe’er he roam.
Heart of my heart! apart from thee
I have no home.

Afar from thee, yet not alone,
Heart of my heart!
Like some soft haunting whisper blown
From Heaven thou art.
I hear the magic music roll
Its waves divine;
The subtle fragrance of thy soul
Has passed to mine.

Nor dawn nor Heaven my heart can know
Save that which lies
In lights and shades that come and go
In thy soft eyes.
Here in the night I dream the day,
By love upborne,
When thy sweet eyes shall shine and say
“It is the morn!”

Uit: Oblomov

„His movements, too, even when he was excited, were kept in check by a certain kind of mildness and laziness which was not without its own touch of gracefulness. If his mind was troubled, his eyes were clouded over, lines appeared on his forehead, and he was plunged into doubt, sadness, and fear; but his anxiety seldom took the form of any definite idea and still more seldom was it transformed into a decision. All his anxiety resolved itself into a sigh and dissolved into apathy or drowsiness.
How well Oblomov’s indoor clothes went with the calm features of his countenance and his effeminate body! He wore a dressing-gown of Persian cloth—a real oriental dressing-gown, without the slightest hint of Europe, without tassels, without velvet trimmings, and so capacious that he could wrap it round him twice. The sleeves, in true Asiatic fashion, got wider and wider from the shoulders to the hands. Though this dressing-gown had lost its original freshness and here and there exchanged its natural sheen for one acquired by years of faithful service, it still preserved the brilliance of its oriental colour, and the material was as strong as ever.
The dressing-gown had a vast number of inestimable qualities in Oblomov’s eyes: it was soft and flexible, it was so light that he did not feel its weight, and it obeyed the least movement of his body like a devoted slave.
Oblomov never wore a tie or a waistcoat at home because he liked to feel unhampered and free. He wore long, soft, wide slippers; when he put his feet on the floor as he got out of bed, he invariably stepped into them without looking.“

Ma mère me jugeait trop jeune pour aller à Henri-IV.

als er wind is)
bewegen de toppen
van de bomen
zodat je uit de verte
de wind al kunt zien

de wind is altijd
bezig kent geen rust

soms is hij vliegende storm
rukt bomen uit de grond
daken van het huis
breekt dijken
doet schepen vergaan
is overstroming
en verderf overal

maar meestal is
de wind rustig
laat molens draaien
die het graan malen
tot meel voor de bakker
die ons er brood van bakt
of zaagt hout
bomen tot planken
of bemaalt een gebied
en regelt de waterhuishouding
maalt van sloot in boezem
of van boezem in sloot
soms is de wind
een briesje ter verkoeling
in de hete zomer
soms strijkt zij over
het water de rimpels
in het gezicht van
de hemel glad
ook waait hij wel
als een frisse wind door een zaak
soms verstopt de wind zich in de
mens die zich dan zoals hij zegt

voel dan het geluid
als de wind vlucht
en de lucht klieft
om dat tuig
dat zich grommend
opricht en vliegt

Uit: Oblomov

Ilya Ilyich Oblomov was lying in bed one morning in his flat in Gorokhovaya Street in one of those large houses which have as many inhabitants as a country town.

He was a man of about thirty-two or three, of medium height and pleasant appearance, with dark grey eyes, but with a total absence of any definite idea, any concentration, in his features. Thoughts promenaded freely all over his face, fluttered about in his eyes, reposed on his half-parted lips, concealed themselves in the furrows of his brow and then vanished completely—and it was at such moments that an expression of serene unconcern spread all over his face. This unconcern passed from his face into the contours of his body and even into the folds of his dressing-gown.

Occasionally a sombre look of something like fatigue or boredom crept into his eyes; but neither fatigue nor boredom could banish for a moment the mildness which was the predominant and fundamental expression not only of his face but of his whole soul, so serenely and unashamedly reflected in his eyes, his smile and every movement of his head and hands. A cold and superficial observer, casting a passing glance at Oblomov, would have said: “A good-natured fellow, I’ll be bound, a simpleton!” A more thoughtful and sympathetic man, after a long scrutiny of his face, would have walked away with a smile, full of pleasant thoughts.

Oblomov’s complexion was not ruddy, nor dark, nor particularly pale, but rather nondescript, or seemed to be so because he had grown so fat and flabby—which was unusual for a man of his age—whether because of lack of exercise, or fresh air, or both, it is difficult to say. Generally speaking, his body, if one were to judge by the dull and excessively white colour of his neck, his small, chubby hands, and his soft shoulders, seemed too effeminate for a man.

„I Outfit Myself for a Trip to Saint Ives

Cats, kits, sacks, wives: how many were going to St. Ives?

For a third of a century, I got by nicely without Detroit. First off, I don’t do well in cars and have never owned one. The smell of anything faintly resembling car seats gives me motion sickness. That alone had always ranked Motor City a solid third from bottom of American Cities I’d Like to See. I always rely on scenery to deaden the inconvenience of travel, and “Detroit scenery” seemed as self-contradictory as “movie actress,” “benign cancer,” “gentlemen of the press,”‘ or “American Diplomacy.” For my entire conscious life I’d successfully ignored the city. But one day two years ago, Detroit ambushed me before I could get out of its way.

The Early Riser out of Chicago dropped me off alongside Grand Trunk Station, a magnificent building baptized in marble but now lying buried in plywood. I lugged my bag-and-a-half into the terminal, a public semi darkness stinking of urine and history. Subpoenaed relatives met their arriving parties under the glow of a loudspeaker that issued familiar, reassuring tunes.

One hundred years ago, the Grand Trunk must have quickened pulses. Pillars of American Municipal balanced a fifty-foot vault on elaborate Corinthian capitals: America copying England copying France copying Rome copying the Greeks. A copper dome with ceramic floral trim bore the obligatory inscriptions from Cicero and Bill Taft. Now the station’s opulence left it a mausoleum, empty except for the Early Riser executives who threaded the rotunda in single file.”

September fattens on vines. Roses
flake from the wall. The smoke
of harmless fires drifts to my eyes.

This is plenty. This is more than enough.

Antwerpen

De overzet van toen. Wij stonden buiten

gelijk men brieven leest soms of gebeden.

welke dromen
bevliegen de vogels
dat zij zich
lichtvaardig
in zoveel lucht
begeven

De Fietsenmaker

in zijn hol
onder schaarse pit
één deur open
zit
knielt
en hurkt hij
voor de zoveelste
fiets

Gontsjarovs verreweg bekendste werk is Oblomov.

“Therefore he did as he had decided; and when the tea had been consumed he raised himself upon his elbow and arrived within an ace of getting out of bed. In fact, glancing at his slippers, he even began to extend a foot in their direction, but presently withdrew it.

Half-past ten struck, and Oblomov gave himself a shake. “What is the matter?,” he said vexedly. “In all conscience ’tis time that I were doing something! Would I could make up my mind to–to–” He broke off with a shout of “Zakhar!” whereupon there entered an elderly man in a grey suit and brass buttons–a man who sported beneath a perfectly bald pate a pair of long, bushy, grizzled whiskers that would have sufficed to fit out three ord
inary men with beards. His clothes, it is true, were cut according to a country pattern, but he cherished them as a faint reminder of his former livery, as the one surviving token of the dignity of the house of Oblomov. The house of Oblomov was one which had once been wealthy and distinguished, but which, of late years, had undergone impoverishment and diminution, until finally it had become lost among a crowd of noble houses of more recent creation.

For a few moments Oblomov remained too plunged in thought to notice Zakhar’s presence; but at length the valet coughed.

“What do you want?” Oblomov inquired.

“You called me just now, barin?”

“I called you, you say? Well, I cannot remember why I did so. Return to your room until I have remembered.”

“Cranes keep landing as night falls. Ribbons of them roll down, slack against the sky. They float in from all compass points, in kettles of a dozen, dropping with the dusk. Scores of Grus canadensis settle on the thawing river. They gather on the island flats, grazing, beating their wings, trumpeting: the advance wave of a mass evacuation. More birds land by the minute, the air red with calls.

A neck stretches long; legs drape behind. Wings curl forward, the length of a man. Spread like fingers, primaries tip the bird into the wind’s plane. The blood-red head bows and the wings sweep together, a cloaked priest giving benediction. Tail cups and belly buckles, surprised by the upsurge of ground. Legs kick out, their backward knees flapping like broken landing gear. Another bird plummets and stumbles forward, fighting for a spot in the packed staging ground along those few miles of water still clear and wide enough to pass as safe.

Twilight comes early, as it will for a few more weeks. The sky, ice blue through the encroaching willows and cottonwoods, flares up, a brief rose, before collapsing to indigo. Late February on the Platte, and the night’s chill haze hangs over this river, frosting the stubble from last fall that still fills the bordering fields. The nervous birds, tall as children, crowd together wing by wing on this stretch of river, one that they’ve learned to find by memory.”

Requiem for the Plantagenet Kings

For whom the possessed sea littered, on both shores,
Ruinous arms; being fired, and for good,
To sound the constitution of just wards,
Men, in their eloquent fashion, understood.

Relieved of soul, the dropping-back of dust,
Their usage, pride, admitted within doors;
At home, under caved chantries, set in trust,
With well-dressed alabaster and proved spurs
They lie; they lie; secure in the decay
Of blood, blood-marks, crowns hacked and coveted,
Before the scouring fires of trial-day
Alight on men; before sleeked groin, gored head,
Budge through the clay and gravel, and the sea
Across daubed rock evacuates its dead.

Epidauros

De zee ligt in de nacht gelijk blauw goud
boven een kim van groen. Ik hoor haar slagen
         van ver met intervallen aangedragen
door zachte wind zonder muziek of zout.

Op de orcheistra staan de vijftien pal
in hun cocon van purperen gewaden.
         Antigone draagt trots haar ongenade

         verwijderd onbereikbaar afgelegen
soms even raadbaar als een overkant

         en voorafgaandelijk al liefgekregen.
