“Geheimen willen we altijd kwijt. Ja, uiteindelijk vertelt iedereen elkaar altijd alles. Ik heb me vaak afgevraagd waarom.

Zien verging

Zoet, vals, arm handje!

Nocturne

De avond heeft niets lieflijks in dit land;

qu’on me laisse partir.

Uit: Settlers of the Marsh

“On the road leading north from the little prairie town Minor two men were fighting their way through the gathering dusk.
Both were recent immigrants; one, Lars Nelson, a giant, of three years’ standing in the country; the other, Niels Lindstedt, slightly above medium size, but compactly built, of only three months’. Both were Swedes; and they had struck up a friendship which had led to a partnership for the winter that was coming. They had been working on a threshing gang between Minor and Balfour and were now on their way into the bush settlement to the north-east where scattered homesteads reached out into the wilderness.
It was the beginning of the month of November.
Niels carried his suitcase on his back; Nelson, his new friend’s bundle, which also held the few belongings of his own which he had along. He wore practically the same clothes winter and summer.
Above five miles from town they reached, on the north road, the point where the continuous settlement ran out into the wild, sandy land which, forming the margin of the Big Marsh, intervened between the territory of the towns and the next Russo-German settlement to the north, some twenty miles or so straight ahead.
At this point the road leapt the Muddy River and passed through its sheltering fringe of bush to strike out over a sheer waste of heath-like country covered with low, creeping brush. The wind which had been soughing through the tree tops had free sweep here; and an exceedingly fine dust of dry, powdery ice-crystals began to fly — you could hardly call it snow so far.
It did not occur to Niels to utter or even harbour apprehensions. His powerful companion knew the road; where he went, Niels could go.
They swung on, for the most part in silence.”

Uit: My Life and Loves

“The next morning I saw Ethel Dodge through the knothole. She was slim and shapely with wide breasts, pert nipples, flaring hips, and a thick mossing of dark hair on her mount. She was so attractive that I wanted her to come to my cabin as she came from the bath. The stewardess introduced me and Ethel seemed willing to be friends. Yes, she was pretty and well-made, but not as lovely, or as young as Winnie. She needed money, however, as she was going to be married. She confessed at once that she loved love and was not averse to earning moneyin whatever manneron her voyage. While we were talking, I heard the stewardess tap lightly on the door; whoever was passing must have heard us laugh. Ethel plainly told me she was at my service for she liked me greatly.
“No nonsense about you, that’s what I like,” she added.
When I met Winnie on deck half an hour later, she was very cold to me, so I merely bowed and smiled and passed on. A little later, while I was pacing the deck, she stopped me.
“I suppose you’re proud of your new conquest?” she huffed.
“No,” I replied, “I’ve made no conquest new or old.”
“Yet I heard you both laughing in your room as I passed,” she replied.
“Possibly,” I said, “but that proves nothing.”
“You probably took off her bathrobe and fondled her breasts andand” Winnie said passionately.
“I didn’t even want to,” I answered.
“I wish I could believe that,” she cried with intense feeling in voice and looks. As luck would have it, we had reached the forecastle and were clean out of sight and hearing of the rest of the passengers. I put my arm around her waist, drew her to me strongly and kissed her lips. While my mouth was on hers, her arms went around my neck and she murmured, “Then you do love me best?”

Poem to my Death

Confronting a longing
To die with my very self, abandoned and alone,
On the densest rock of a deserted island.
At that moment, a final yearning for carnations,
On the landscape, a tragic horizon of stone.

My eyes filled with graves of stars,
My passion spread out, exhausted and dispersed,
My fingers like children watching a cloud fade,
My reason mobbed with enormous sheets.

My pale affections returning to silence
–Even love, consumed brother on my path!–
My name untangling, yellow in the branches,
And my hands, twitching to give me to the grass.

To rise to the final, the whole minute,
And offer myself to the fields,
Then to bend the leaf of my ordinary flesh
And fall unsmiling, without witness to intertia.

Let nobody dishonor my death with sobs
Or wrap me forever in plain earth
For in a moment of freedom I may freely
Demand the one liberty of this planet.

With what mad joy will my bones begin
To seek airholes in my brown flesh
And I, giving myself, giving myself fiercely and boldly
To the elements: in solitude breaking my chains!

Who will detain me with useless dreams
When my soul begins to fulfill its task
Making of my sleep a rich douh
For the frail worm that knocks at my door?

Smaller and smaller my worn-out humility
At every instant greater and easier the surrender
Perhaps my chest will turn to begin a flower bud
Maybe my lips will feed lilies.

What shall I be called when all that remains
Is my memory of myself on the rock of the deserted island?
A carnation wedged between my shadow and the wind,
Death’s child and mine: My name will be poet.

Uit: Self-Made Men

“The subject announced for this evening’s entertainment is not new. Man in one form or another, has been a frequent and fruitful subject for the press, the pulpit and the platform. This subject has come up for consideration under a variety of attractive titles, such as “Great Men,” “Representative Men,” “Peculiar Men,” “Scientific Men,” “Literary Men,” “Successful Men,” “Men of Genius,” and “Men of the World;” but under whatever name or designation, the vital point of interest in the discussion has ever been the same, and that is, manhood itself, and this in its broadest and most comprehensive sense.
The tendency to the universal, in such discussion, is altogether natural and all controlling: for when we consider what man, as a whole, is; what he has been; what he aspires to be, and what, by a wise and vigorous cultivation of his faculties, he may yet become, we see that it leads irresistably to this broad view of him as a subject of thought and inquiry.
The saying of the poet that “The proper study of mankind is man,” and which has been the starting point of so many lectures, essays and speeches, holds its place, like all other great utterances, because it contains a great truth and a truth alike for every age and generation of men. It is always new and can never grow old. It is neither dimmed by time nor tarnished by repetition; for man, both in respect of himself and of his species, is now, and evermore will be, the center of unsatisfied human curiosity.
The pleasure we derive from any department of knowledge is largely due to the glimpse which it gives us of our own nature. We may travel far over land and sea, brave all climates, dare all dangers, endure all hardships, try all latitudes and longitudes; we may penetrate the earth, sound the ocean’s depths and seep the hollow sky with our glasses, in the pursuit of other knowledge; we may contemplate the glorious landscape gemmed by forest, lake and river and dotted with peaceful homes and quiet herds; we may whirl away to the great cities, all aglow with life and enterprise; we may mingle with the imposing assemblages of wealth and power; we may visit the halls where Art works her miracles in music, speech and color, and where Science unbars the gates to higher planes of civilization; but no matter how radiant the colors, how enchanting the melody, how gorgeous and splendid the pageant: man himself, with eyes turned inward upon his own wondrous attributes and powers surpasses them all.”

Vind je me nu flauw?

Niet, dat hij echt een liefje heeft;
Hij stelt het zich maar voor.
Dat doen de minnedichters meer;
Daar zijn ze dichters voor.

Ook nu weer is hij aan den gang;
Ook nu weer zingt de snaar
Zijns instruments een minnelied,
Zoo zoet, zoo wonderbaar:

O Mina, Mina mijn!
Dan krimpt mijn jong studentenhart
Ineen van minnepijn!

En drinkt mijn oor uw zilvren stem,
O Mina, Mina mijn!
Dan zet zich dat studentenhart
Uiteen van minnepijn!

En proeft mijn mond uw liefdekus,
O Mina, Mina mijn!
Dan berst datzelfde jonge hart
Vaneen door minnepijn!’

Nauw sterft de laatste harptoon weg
Dier englenmelodij,
Of raatlend rijdt de diligence
Naar Woerden ’t huis voorbij.

De jongling werpt zijn dichtersblik
’t Raam uit en ’t rijtuig in,
En, hemel, hoe toevallig! – juist
In ’t oog van een Friezin;

Van een der liefste meisjes uit
Die landstreek, ‘in wier lijn’
Reeds Starter heeft gezongen, dat
‘De schoonste vrouwen zijn.’

Je zoenen zijn zoeter dan
zoeter dan honing en ik vind je
mooier en liever, liever
en aardiger nog dan de koning.
We gaan samen liggen
een eind hier vandaan
we maken van takken
van takken en blaadjes
een vloer en een dak,
dat was onze woning,
of ik was het tuintje
en jij was de tent
daar gingen wij wonen
en blijven en horen
o rep je mijn liefje
ik heb je zo graag
nu of nooit samen slapen
want we zijn er
alleen maar vandaag.

Love and Friendship

Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree—
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most constantly?

The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild-briar fair?

Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly’s sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He still may leave thy garland green.

Uit: Oscar Wilde, His Life and Confessions

“Even as a schoolboy he was an excellent talker: his descriptive power being far above the average, and his humorous exaggerations of school occurrences always highly amusing.

“A favourite place for the boys to sit and gossip in the late afternoon in winter time was round a stove which stood in ‘The Stone Hall.’ Here Oscar was at his best; although his brother Willie was perhaps in those days even better than he was at telling a story.

“Oscar would frequently vary the entertainment by giving us extremely quaint illustrations of holy people in stained-glass attitudes: his power of twisting his limbs into weird contortions being very great. (I am told that Sir William Wilde, his father, possessed the same power.) It must not be thought, however, that there was any suggestion of irreverence in the exhibition.

“At one of these gatherings, about the year 1870, I remember a discussion taking place about an ecclesiastical prosecution that made a considerable stir at the time. Oscar was present, and full of the mysterious nature of the Court of Arches; he told us there was nothing he would like better in after life than to be the hero of such a cause celèbre and to go down to posterity as the defendant in such a case as ‘Regina versus Wilde!’

“At school he was almost always called ‘Oscar’— but he had a nick-name, ‘Grey-crow,’ which the boys would call him when they wished to annoy him, and which he resented greatly. It was derived in some mysterious way from the name of an island in the Upper Loch Erne, within easy reach of the school by boat.

“It was some little time before he left Portora that the boys got to know of his full name, Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde. Just at the close of his school career he won the ‘Carpenter’ Greek Testament Prize,— and on presentation day was called up to the dais by Dr. Steele, by all his names — much to Oscar’s annoyance; for a great deal of schoolboy chaff followed.“

“Israel.

‘O ja,’ barstte De Dikke Man inenen, bijkans tomeloos, los.

‘Onze eigen, onvolprezen Jaffa!’ exclameerde De Dikke Man.

‘Achja- Israël’, murmelde De Vage Joodse Kennis.”

Daarnaast is Alexander Kluge schrijver.

Was hätten sie vorgebracht?

In hartverovrend achtelooze houding lag

Immortelle I

De maan glijdt langs de ruiten

En blikt mij vragend aan.

“Wat moet dat, bleeke zanger, –

In uw ooghoek glinstert een traan?”

Zoo gij de maan zelf niet waart

‘k Zou zeggen: loop naar de maan. –

Wat mij het oog doet glinsteren,

Dat gaat er geen schepsel aan.

Uit: The Illuminatus! Trilogy (samen met Robert A. Wilson)

„It was the year when they finally immanentized the Eschaton. On April 1, the world’s great powers came closer to nuclear war than ever before, all because of an obscure island named Fernando Poo. By the time international affairs returned to their normal cold-war level, some wits were calling it the most tasteless April Fool’s joke in history. I happen to know all the details about what happened, but I have no idea how to recount them in a manner that will make sense to most readers. For instance, I am not even sure who I am, and my embarrassment on that matter mates me wonder if you will believe anything I reveal. Worse yet, I am at the moment very conscious of a squirrel-in Central Park, just off Sixty-eighth Street, in New York City-that is leaping from one tree to another, and I
think that happens on the night of April 23 (or is it the morning of April 24?), but fitting the squirrel together with Fernando Poo is, for the present, beyond my powers. I beg your tolerance. There is nothing I can do to make things any easier for any of us, and you will have to accept being addressed by a disembodied voice just as I accept the compulsion to speak out even though I am painfully aware that I am talking to an invisible, perhaps nonexistent audience. Wise men have regarded the earth as a tragedy, a farce, even an illusionist’s trick; but all, if they are truly wise and not merely intellectual rapists, recognize that it is certainly some kind of stage in which we all play roles, most of us being very poorly coached and totally unrehearsed before the curtain rises. Is it too much if I ask, tentatively, that we agree to look upon it as a circus, a touring carnival wandering about the sun for a record season of four billion years and producing new monsters and miracles, hoaxes and bloody mishaps, wonders and blunders, but never quite entertaining the customers well enough to prevent them from leaving, one by one, and returning to their homes for a long and bored winter’s sleep under the dust?“

„Abe made room under the spout by driving ahead.

“Here, Charlie,” he said, for the boy had climbed to the ground. “I want you to take a load to town. Can you do it?”

“Sure, daddy.”

“All right. There it is. Climb up.” And he helped him. “Had your dinner? To elevator one; the first from the crossing. Listen here. While you have the load, you walk the horses. When you drive up the incline, hold your lines tight. On the platform, let the man do the work. On the way home, you can trot half the way.”

The boy nodded and clicked his tongue.

Victor Lafontaine had been watching father and son. As Abe turned back to his load, the Frenchman caught his eye and smiled. “Nice kid,” he said.

Abe looked at his watch. “Fill Horanski’s tank. Then dinner.” And he, too, drove on, separated from Charlie only by a narrow strip; for half a mile the trails hardly diverged. Abe met the hayrack bringing the dinner for the crew. Mrs. Horanski stood, precariously balanced, among baskets of food and boilers of coffee. As she passed him, she nodded with a smile at Charlie who laughed proudly back at her.

Then, just as father and son reached the point where their trails divided sharply, the whistle of the engine blew, giving the signal to stop work. The shrill sound made Charlie jump; and smilingly he looked back at his father, waving his h
and; then he disappeared from sight.

Two hours went by. Abe had had his lunch at home and was back in the field filling his tank.

Wheat, wheat, wheat ran from the spout.

Then, just as in the morning, Victor and his ladsstared south.

Abe looked up at the old man’s face which he saw in three-quarter profile. He was conscious only of the sunlight playing in the snow-white bristles of the stubble of his beard. Incomprehensibly, a wave of fear invaded him, aroused by the puzzled expression on the man’s face. Again, as in the morning, Abe dropped to the ground and circled the engine“.

Uit: Oscar Wilde, His Life and Confessions

„The Wildes had three children, two sons and a daughter.  The first son was born in 1852, a year after the marriage, and was christened after his father William Charles Kingsbury Wills.  The second son was born two years later, in 1854 and the names given to him seem to reveal the Nationalist sympathies and pride of his mother.  He was christened Oscar Fingal O’Flahertie Wills Wilde; but he

appears to have suffered from the pompous string only in extreme youth.  At school he concealed the “Fingal,” as a young man he found it advisable to omit the “O’Flahertie.”

In childhood and early boyhood Oscar was not considered as quick or engaging or handsome as his brother, Willie.  Both boys had the benefit of the best schooling of the time.  They were sent as boarders to the Portora School at Enniskillen, one of the four Royal schools of Ireland.  Oscar went to Portora in 1864 at the age of nine, a couple of years after his brother.  He remained at the school for seven years and left it on winning an Exhibition for Trinity College, Dublin, when he was just seventeen.

The facts hitherto collected and published about Oscar as a schoolboy are sadly meagre and insignificant.  Fortunately for my readers I have received from Sir Edward Sullivan, who was a contemporary of Oscar both at school and college, an exceedingly vivid and interesting pen-picture of the lad, one of those astounding masterpieces of portraiture only to be produced by the plastic sympathies of boyhood and the intimate intercourse of years lived in common.

It is love alone which in later life can achieve such a miracle of representment.  I am very glad to be allowed to publish this realistic miniature, in the very words of the author.

“I first met Oscar Wilde in the early part of 1868 at Portora Royal School. He was thirteen or fourteen years of age.  His long straight fair hair was a striking feature of his appearance.  He was then, as he remained for some years after, extremely boyish in nature, very mobile, almost restless when out of the schoolroom.  Yet he took no part in the school games at any time.  Now and then he would be seen in one of the school boats on Loch Erne: yet he was a poor hand at an oar.“

  Zijn aan mijn lippen ontgeleen;

Zoo somber en bitter als ik zong,

Zoo zong er op aarde nooit een.

Verveeld heeft mij eindlijk dat haten,

  Dat eeuwig gezang en geween.

Ik zweeg, en zooals ik nu zwijg,

Zoo zweeg er op aarde nooit een.

In fact, the President of the United States had several severe migraines during the following weeks; but the atheistic rulers of Moscow and Peking were less susceptible to magic. They never reported a twinge. But, wait, here is ano
ther performer in our circus, and one of the most intelligent and decent in the lot-his name is unpronounceable, but you can call him Howard and he happens to have been born a dolphin. He’s swimming through the ruins of Atlantis and it’s April 10 already-time is moving; I’m not sure what Howard sees but it bothers him, and he decides to tell Hagbard Celine all about it. Not that I know, at this point, who Hagbard Celine is. Never mind; watch the waves roll and be glad there isn’t much pollution out here yet. Look at the way the golden sun lights each wave with a glint that, curiously, sparkles into a silver sheen; and watch, watch the waves as they roll, so that it is easy to cross five hours of time in one second and find ourselves amid trees and earth, with even a few falling leaves for a touch of poetry before the horror. Where are we? Five hours away, I told you-five hours due west, to be precise, so at the same instant that Howard turns a somersault in Atlantis, Sasparilla Godzilla, a tourist from simcoe, Ontario (she had the misfortune to be born a human being) turns a neat nosedive right here and lands unconscious on the ground.“

Uit: Settlers of the Marsh

On the road leading north from the little prairie town Minor two men were fighting their way through the gathering dusk.
Above five miles from town they reached, on the north road, the point where the continuous settlement ran out into the wild, sandy land which, forming the margin of the Big Marsh, intervened between the territory of the towns and the next Russo-German settlement to the north, some twenty miles or so straight ahead.“

„…Miss Travers had applied to Sir William Wilde for money again and again, and accompanied these applications with threats of worse pen-pricks if the requests were not acceded to. It was under these circumstances, according to Lady Wilde, that she wrote the letter complained of to Dr. Travers and enclosed it in a sealed envelope. She wished to get Dr. Travers to use his parental influence to stop Miss Travers from further disgracing herself and insulting and annoying Sir William and Lady Wilde.

The defence carried the war into the enemy’s camp by thus suggesting that Miss Travers was blackmailing Sir William and Lady Wilde.

The attack in the hands of Serjeant Armstrong was still more deadly and convincing. He rose early on the Monday afternoon and declared at the beginning that the case was so painful that he would have preferred not to have been engaged in it–a hypocritical statement which deceived no one, and was just as conventional-false as his wig.“

I was the most quiet

I was the most quiet,
among those who voyaged to your harbor
No obscene social events announced me,
nor the hushed bells of ancestral reflexes;
my route was the wild music of birds
which flung into the air my kindness…fluttering.

Neither did vessels laden with opulence bear me,
nor oriental rugs support my body;
over the vessels my face appeared
whistling in the wind’s aimless simplicity.

I did not measure the harmony of trivial ambitions
offered by your full-of-promises hand.
I perceived, only, in the depths of my frail spirit,
the tragic abandon hidden in your gesture.

Your constant duality was marked by my avid thirst.
You were like the sea, resonant and discreet.
Over you I spent my wasted hours.
You hovered above, as the sun on petals.

And I strolled in the breeze of your fallen anguish
in the naive sadness of knowing the truth:
your life was a deep struggle of restless springs
an awesome white river rushing to the desert.

One day, by the yellow banks of hysteria,
many ambitious, hidden faces trailed you;
through your surge of tears ripped from the cosmos
other voices encroached without discovering your
mystery…

I was the most quiet.
My voice, hardly an echo.
Conscience difused in a sound of anguish,
dissipated and sweet, throughout all silences.

I was the most quiet.
One who sprang from the earth with no other weapon
but a verse.

I stand before you… stars,
disarmed and gentle… his love in my breast!

Uit: The Signal

Semyon Ivanonv was a track-walker. His hut was ten versts away from a railroad station in one direction and twelve versts away in the other. About four versts away there was a cotton mill that had opened the year before, and its tall chimney rose up darkly from behind the forest. The only dwellings around were the distant huts of the other track-walkers.

Semyon Ivanov’s health had been completely shattered. Nine years before he had served right through the war as servant to an officer. The sun had roasted him, the cold frozen him, and hunger famished him on the forced marches of forty and fifty versts a day in the heat and the cold and the rain and the shine. The bullets had whizzed about him, but, thank God! none had struck him.

Semyon’s regiment had once been on the firing line. For a whole week there had been skirmishing with the Turks, only a deep ravine separating the two hostile armies; and from morn till eve there had

been a steady cross-fire. Thrice daily Semyon carried a steaming samovar and his officer’s meals from the camp kitchen to the ravine. The bullets hummed about him and rattled viciously against the rocks.

Semyon was terrified and cried sometimes, but still he kept right on. The officers were pleased with him, because he always had hot tea ready for them.”
