Uit: Outrageous! Monologues and the Odd Scene

“CHARLES. You know, I wonder if this whole thing started when I was browsing at the Drama Book Shop and saw that several of my colleagues had anthologies of their monologues, and suddenly my eyes narrowed into an envious squint, and I thought, “Hey, why not me?” But maybe it was earlier when I received an email from a young girl in Austin, Texas, who wanted me to know that she had performed a monologue from one of my plays in competition material. Well, you know something?
She won! I think it was a monologue from Vampire Lesbians of Sodom.
She didn’t say which monologue, but there are several really juicy ones in that play. That got me thinking that maybe I could make it easier for people who are looking for audition material or competition pieces by compiling all the monologues from my plays into one book. I also think you can read this tome without an angle of looking for fresh material. Just have yourself a good laugh. That’s important nowadays. And so for good measure, I threw in some of my favorite two-person scenes from my vast oeuvre.
I’ve always been mad for the convention of the big speech in plays. I love giving actors and often one particular actor, ME, an opportunity for a tour de force moment. I think of these speeches as arias. I remember when we were in rehearsals for The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, the great Linda Lavin, who created the role of Marjorie Taub, had big speeches dotted throughout the latter part of the play. However, she didn’t really get a chance to take stage until the end of the first act. Linda is a playwright’s dream, for she has unlimited resources of both intense emotion and comic invention. A number of years earlier, Linda had played Madame Rose in Gypsyon Broadway. I told Linda she needed the equivalent in our show to Rose’s first big number, “Some People.” Therefore, I wrote the speech that I’ve included in this anthology where Marjorie goes ballistic when her aged mother suggests she should do some volunteer work. It established the character as an extravagantly verbal, emotionally volatile woman and made the audience look forward to her next rant.”

Uit: You Think It, I’ll Say It

“The understanding is that, after Casey’s iPhone alarm goes off at 6:15 a.m., Kirsten wakes the boys, nudges them to get dressed, and herds them downstairs, all while Casey is showering. The four of them eat breakfast as a family, deal with teeth-brushing and backpacks, and Casey, who is the principal of the middle school in the same district as the elementary school Jack and Ian attend, drives the boys to drop-off. Kirsten then takes her shower in the newly quiet house before leaving for work.
The reality is that, at 6:17, as soon as Casey shuts the bathroom door, Kirsten grabs her own iPhone from her nightstand and looks at Lucy Headrick’s Twitter feed. Clearly, Kirsten is not alone: Lucy has 3.1 million followers. (She follows a mere five hundred and thirty-three accounts, many of which belong to fellow-celebrities.) Almost all of Lucy’s vast social-media empire, which of course is an extension of her life-style-brand empire (whatever the fuck a life-style brand is), drives Kirsten crazy. Its content is fake and pandering and boring and repetitive—how many times will Lucy post variations on the same recipe for buttermilk biscuits?—and Kirsten devours all of it, every day: Facebook and Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest, the blog, the vlog, the TV show. Every night, Kirsten swears that she won’t devote another minute to Lucy, and every day she squanders hours. The reason that things go wrong so early in the morning, she has realized, is this: she’s pretty sure Twitter is the only place where real, actual Lucy is posting, Lucy whom Kirsten once knew. Lucy has insomnia, and, while all the other posts on all the other sites might be written by Lucy’s minions, Kirsten is certain that it was Lucy herself who, at 1:22 a.m., wrote, “Watching Splash on cable, oops I forgot to name one of my daughters Madison!” Or, at 3:14 a.m., accompanied by a photo of an organic candy bar: “Hmm could habit of eating chocolate in middle of night be part of reason I can’t sleep LOL!”

Meeroken is ongezond

Kippig

I hate poems (Fragment)

I hate the theatre
And watchin’ plays
that go on… and on… and on for days
till you’ve got the stiff necks and the paralysed bums
waitin’ for Godot and he never bleedin’ comes
and do you know if you go down to that Barbican
its full of vegetarians
All eating lettuce off pebble dash bread
And tara.. mar.. solata
They look half dead

They don’t serve Spam
They don’t serve Spam
They don’t serve Spam at the Barbican

But I like the Arts Council
There should be more of that you know
They say no.. they say no.. they say no
They say, if you’re looking for funding then don’t come to me
Get they to a lottery
They make all the artists drop their pants
And then they cut off their arts council grants
One day soon their going to set us free
From all this awful artistry
And then they’ll be no more Orchestra’s, an painter’s an poets

And then they’ll
Bring back Hughie
Bring back Hughie

Sozialhelfer?, sagte Kagraner. Wieso Sozialhelfer? Weg, sagte Kagraner, einfach weg.

Uit: The Fox in the Chicken Coop

“The last session of the Temporary Council took place in an unprec-edentedly charged atmosphere. On the agenda was a tricky question: the village youth had informed the “government” that they wanted to set up a soccer team to compete with the team from the village of Metula beyond Flood Mountain. This preposterous idea would have been considered sacrilege only a few months back, but in view of the changed attitude of the public toward travelling—the council found itself in a quandary. The councillors were therefore not hasty in com-ing to a decision, but personally went out to the area at the foot of the dams and studied the youngsters’ exercises at length until they grew familiar with the rules of the game. After that the council decided in principle in favor of a one-time contest with Metula; but then they got stuck on the issue of picking the Kimmel Springs team. This was truly a complex matter. The barber, of course, demanded the majority of the team for himself, on the grounds that his bloc of support-ers formed the largest of all the village camps. But the cobbler denied the latter claim, stating that the Cobbler’s class at school was no smaller than the Barber’s, adding that the ball itself was his own manufacture. He therefore demanded for his followers three out of the five “forward” positions. As a result the other representatives demanded secure posi-tions for themselves, based on their status in the village. Moreover, the slaughterer announced that he wished to escort the players in person, in order to keep an eye on them in the tumult of Metula. “I also know something about ballplaying,” said the slaughterer in self-recommendation. “In Hebrew school we used to play a lot until the teacher caught us and pulled out sidelocks.” The councillors consented to the slaughterer’s trip since it would be irrational to leave him alone in the village when all the other coun-cillors would be taking upon themselves the burden of escorting the team. But under no circumstances could they agree on the composition of the team. Elifaz Hermanovich proposed the game be postponed until after the elections, since then it would be easier to work out the team according to electoral strength. But his proposal was immediately vetoed because—they claimed—”after the elections there would be no need for such trips.”

With Strawberries

With strawberries we filled a tray,
And then we drove away, away
Along the links beside the sea,
Where wave and wind were light and free,
And August felt as fresh as May.
And where the springy turf was gay
With thyme and balm and many a spray
Of wild roses, you tempted me
With strawberries.
A shadowy sail, silent and gray,
Stole like a ghost across the bay;
But none could hear me ask my fee,
And none could know what came to be.
Can sweethearts all their thirst allay
With strawberries?

The Artist muses at his ease,
Contented that his work is done,
And smiling-smiling!-as he sees
His crowd collecting, one by one.
Alas! his travail’s but begun!

And what to Ninety-Eight is fun
May raise the gorge of Ninety-Nine.

„MRS. FORREST (Devastated) It’s all true. All of it true. I was so ashamed. l blamed myself for the death of my boy. But I always loved my little girl. ( To Chicklet) You must believe that. I did love you. I do. And when Chicklet lost her memory of that day, I took it as a blessing from God. I vowed to create a new life for us. I changed my name, moved to a new city. I suppose I tried too hard, went too far and now . . . now I see I’m doomed to failure.
CHICKLET Mother, hold me. (They embrace)
BERDINE (Sobbing) l was supposed to be her best friend but I never knew.
KANAKA How do you feel, Chicklet?
CHICKLET As if a thousand doors have been opened.
PROVOLONEY But what does this all mean?
STAR CAT It’s really very simple. Chicklet did her best to suppress this traumatic childhood episode by denying herself all normal human emotion, so she created various alter egos to express emotion for her. She associated the sex drive with her mother, so she in effect became her childhood vision of her mother, Ann Bowman, whenever placed in a potentially erotic situation.
KANAKA Is this condition contagious?
STAR CAT Indeed not. Over eighteen percent of all Americans suffer from some form of multiple personality disorder. It is not communicable and in most cases, treatable with medical care.
BETTINA (Energetically) This is the most exciting story I’ve ever heard. This is the project that’s going to win me an Oscar.
PROVOLONEY Huh?
BETTINA A surfer girl with a split personality. A prestige picture if I ever saw one. (To Chicklet) Honey, I want to option this property, and believe me I’ll pay top dollar. I can’t promise casting approval but you can trust my integrity.”

« Chicklet, a wholesome All-American teenage girl suffers from a multiple personality syndrome. At the big luau, Starcat, a surfer and a psychology major, hypnotizes her and she reveals the dark secret that has caused her personality to fracture.
CHICKLET
I was so angry with my mother. I wanted to hurt her. I took my brother Frankie’s hand and we crossed the street to the playground. There were these awful slum children playing, pounding strange primitive instruments. A sharp breeze caused the wild flowers to have the wizened faces of starving circus clowns. The sky seemed so threatening, as if the clouds were created of demented angels warning me to flee. But I couldn’t. I look down and there’s a pale green snake slithering along the crack of the pavement, a cooly seductive creature on its way to a lizard ball. This viridian temptress stops to deliver me a message.
A perverse billet-doux that I must disobey my mother. No, no, I can’t do that. I love my mother. She’s kind and beautiful. The snakes multiply, in a moment, there are reptiles covering the jungle gym making those steel bars as green as grass and terrifyingly alive. And all of them whispering “Go on, go on, go on the swings. Your mother doesn’t love you.
She loathes the very sight of you.” I looked at my little brother, wearing his red overalls with the little fishes. I said, “Frankie, let’s go on the swings. It’ll be fun. I don’t care what Mama said,” He got on the swing and I pushed him. Harder and harder I pushed him until he was soaring into the clouds and that’s when I dared him. I dared him, “I bet you can’t stay on with no hands.” He took me up on the bet and let go, and my wonderful little twin brother, this adorable little boy who loved and trusted me, he flew off the swing and into the outstretched arms of those ghastly angels and I never saw him again until we found his crushed, little body in thedumpster next door!“

Uit: The Divine Sister

“My husband, Morris, was an explorer and surprisingly, a man of faith. To prove to me the existence of God, he took me on a voyage to the ancient Island of Crete. We traveled to the dark corner of the island, far away from any tourists. I wore a Bill Blass safari jacket with a stand up collar and matching slacks. Morris wanted me to observe the life cycle of the species Sepia Officinalis, otherwise known as the cuttle fish. Yes, I saw them hatched from their mothers, small yet sinister creatures with eight arms and two tentacles. Their shells iridescent and jewel-like. Did you know that the large, staring black eyes of the cuttle fish are fully developed before birth, allowing them to hunt their prey even before hatching? And hunt their prey they did. I saw them move together as one as they stalked and ultimately devoured a terrified octopus, its ink spreading through the water in grim black floating sentences. I said, “Morris, take me away from here. I have seen enough.” “No, Margaret, we must stay. We must stay. We must now see them die to feed the more superior species.” And so we stayed. I removed my jacket and slacks, revealing a Schiaparelli pink bathing suit. We saw the great dolphin leap from the sea and snatch a generation of cuttle fish into its hideous gaping mouth. Morris shouted, “We are looking at the face of God! It is His will to create such divine perfection.” I replied, “If that is your God, then He is a cruel one and I’ll have none of Him.” We returned to our hotel in silence. With an over powering dread of the unknown, I slipped into a turquoise silk Galanos. I found Morris standing on our balcony, hypnotized by the sea. And then, without a warning, he grasped his heart and fell to the ground. I knew at that very instant he was dead. And now, when I look upon the ocean, despite its glorious magnitude, all I see is debris, debris, debris. An endless trail of debris.
Is that an answer to your question? »

Verdomde loodgieter! Verdomde tuinier! Verdomde kruidenier! Haha, kruidenier, die is goed.”

A New Song to an Old Tune

SONS of Shannon, Tamar, Trent,

Men of the Lothians, Men of Kent,

Essex, Wessex, shore and shire,

Mates of the net, the mine, the fire,

Lads of the wheel and desk and loom,

Noble and trader, squire and groom,

Come where the bugles of England play,

‘Over the hills and far away!’

Southern Cross and Polar Star —

Here are the Britons bred afar;

Serry, O serry them, fierce and keen,

Under the flag of the Empress-Queen;

Shoulder to shoulder down the track,

Where, to the unretreating Jack,

The victor bugles of England play,

‘Over the hills and far away!’

What if the best of our wages be

An empty sleeve, a stiff-set knee,

A crutch for the rest of life — who cares,

So long as the One Flag floats and dares?

So long as the One Race dares and grows?

Death — what is death but God’s own rose?

Let but the bugles of England play,

‘Over the hills and far away!’

A Child

A child,

Curious and innocent,

Slips from his Nurse, and rejoicing

Loses himself in the Fair.

Thro’ the jostle and din

Wandering, he revels,

Dreaming, desiring, possessing;

Till, of a sudden

Tired and afraid, he beholds

The sordid assemblage

Just as it is; and he runs

With a sob to his Nurse

(Lighting at last on him),

And in her motherly bosom

Cries him to sleep.

Thus thro’ the World,

Seeing and feeling and knowing,

Goes Man: till at last,

Tired of experience, he turns

To the friendly and comforting breast

Of the old nurse, Death.

Uit: Busched and Ambushed in “The Third Story” (Bespreking in The Village Voice door Michael Feingold)

„This is rich food; not surprisingly, palates accustomed to the thin gruel that today’s theater too often serves up have grimaced at it. It’s also, let’s face the fact, hearty peasant cuisine—a thick stew, the chewy ingredients and peppery flavor of which may not appeal to fastidious tastes. Nor is it dished up with much elegance: The designs have been conceived serviceably but without panache; Carl Andress’s direction comes in, competently, just under the imaginative flair that gives such works sparkle.

The cast’s likability partly makes up for these shortfalls: Jennifer Van Dyck embodies the monomaniac scientist with crisp comic authority; Turner’s brassy energy is as delightful as her slurry diction is maddening (startlingly, it improves when she takes on the German accent). Walker is irresistibly charming as he lurches, like a bipedal shuttlecock, from lapsed screenwriter to Oedipally traumatized gangster; Sarah Rafferty makes his ambiguously wide-eyed doll and the woebegone Russian princess equally fetching. Busch’s definitive gift for female haughtiness, whether sporting gangster haute couture or a massive gray fright wig larger than himself, needs no critic’s confirmation.

The main joy of The Third Story is that its foolery embodies something substantive, making its occasional unevenness easy to bear. Like that good peasant food, it sticks to your ribs. Jung says somewhere that the psychic “work” accomplished by myths and fairy tales doesn’t occur on the story’s realistic, psychological, or allegorical level; it’s in the energy created as our minds move among the three. No wonder The Third Story feels like such an energizing event.“

Uit: The Wrong Boy

„I thought about it. And then I said, ‘Because of Morrissey.’

‘Morris who?’ he said.

‘Morrissey,’ I told him, ‘not Morris who. Morrissey, the greatest living lyricist. He used to be with The Smiths.’

‘Oh,’ he said, ’that boring twat!’

I didn’t talk to him any more. He put a Phil Collins cassette on and farted a few times which, in the musical circumstances, I thought was rather apposite.

He’s just stuffed another bacon buttie between his teeth and he’s laughing again so that you can see all the chewed-up bread and bacon and saliva in his mouth. He thinks it’s dead hilarious ‘cause I said I was a vegetarian. That’s what started him laughing.

‘I don’t know what you’re laughing for,’ I said, ‘because all sorts of people are vegetarian; like George Bernard Shaw was vegetarian. And Mahatma Gandhi! And the majority of the world happens to be vegetarian,’ I said, ‘including Morrissey. And me.’

He just laughed even more.

‘And that’s why I became a vegetarian,’ I told him. ‘Because of Morrissey.’

But I was wasting my breath so I shut up and let him laugh. What can you say to a Philistine who’s into Phil Collins and Dire Straits and other such frivolity? I’ve got my Walkman on now so at least I can’t hear him laughing. The only saving grace in having a lift from him is that he’s so fat he makes me feel really thin. It’s not that I’m obese or anything, not any more, Morrissey. But even though I’m not fat nowadays, I sometimes forget and still think of myself as being corpulent. And I hate having to look at pictures of me when I was fat. Photographs are just like computers – they never tell the truth. It’s like that picture of Oscar Wilde, Morrissey, you know the one where he’s got those boots on and he’s leaning against that wall. And if that was the only surviving picture of Oscar Wilde everybody’d think he was a fat person, wouldn’t they? But Oscar Wilde wasn’t fat, not on the inside. And I wasn’t fat, not on the inside, I wasn’t. It was just a phase I was going through. And probably it was just a phase that Oscar Wilde was going through and he couldn’t help it just like I couldn’t help it. They used to call me Moby Dick! When we moved to Wythenshawe and they put me in that comprehensive school where I didn’t know nobody and it was already the middle of term by the time I started, I walked into the classroom and Steven Spanswick looked up and said, ‘Fuckin’ hell, it’s Moby Dick!’

So weit, so gut.

Anterotics

Laughs the happy April morn
Thro’ my grimy, little window,
And a shaft of sunshine pushes
Thro’ the shadows in the square.

Dogs are tracing thro’ the grass,
Crows are cawing round the chimneys,
In and out among the washing
Goes the West at hide-and-seek.

Loud and cheerful clangs the bell.
Here the nurses troop to breakfast.
Handsome, ugly, all are women . . .
O, the Spring–the Spring–the Spring!

Fill A Glass With Golden Wine

Fill a glass with golden wine,
And the while your lips are wet
Set your perfume unto mine,
And forget.
Every kiss we take and give
Leaves us less of life to live.

Yet again! Your whim and mine
In a happy while have met.
All your sweets to me resign,
Nor regret
That we press with every breath,
Sighed or singing, nearer death.

Waiting

A square, squat room (a cellar on promotion),
Drab to the soul, drab to the very daylight;
Plasters astray in unnatural-looking tinware;
Scissors and lint and apothecary’s jars.

Here, on a bench a skeleton would writhe from,
Angry and sore, I wait to be admitted:
Wait till my heart is lead upon my stomach,
While at their ease two dressers do their chores.

One has a probe-it feels to me a crowbar.
A small boy sniffs and shudders after bluestone.
A poor old tramp explains his poor old ulcers.
Life is (I think) a blunder and a shame.

Zilpha Marsh

At four o’clock in late October
I sat alone in the country school-house
Back from the road ‘mid stricken fields,
And an eddy of wind blew leaves on the pane,
And crooned in the flue of the cannon-stove,
With its open door blurring the shadows
With the spectral glow of a dying fire.
In an idle mood I was running the planchette —
All at once my wrist grew limp,
And my hand moved rapidly over the board,
Till the name of “Charles Guiteau” was spelled,
Who threatened to materialize before me.
I rose and fled from the room bare-headed
Into the dusk, afraid of my gift.
And after that the spirits swarmed —
Chaucer, Caesar, Poe and Marlowe,
Cleopatra and Mrs. Surratt —
Wherever I went, with messages, —
Mere trifling twaddle, Spoon River agreed.
You talk nonsense to children, don’t you?
And suppose I see what you never saw
And never heard of and have no word for,
I must talk nonsense when you ask me
What it is I see!

Uit: Interview with Andrei Pleşu (Door Alexandre Mirlesse in Notre Europe)

„Can we speak of a “European identity”?

I think on the contrary that it is time to pause, to stop speaking about it in the hyperbole currently in favour. Much has been said about Europe already, much has been written; the original nucleus has been enlarged.

Now, whatever happens, there will be a break before the next enlargement, if it takes place. Under these circumstances an exercise in silence might help. Besides, what has been said was not terribly imaginative. Some words appear too often!

So you think, like Hungarian writer Peter Esterhazy, that people should be fined for using expressions like “return to Europe”, “common house”, “European values”?

Oh! I have heard better: “A soul for europe”! It was the theme of a conference recently organised by some Germans. They like that sort of schmaltz … But, to be quite candid, it isn’t just a few similar words but also the same themes that keep popping up…

Which ones?

Before we go any further let one thing be clear: these themes are per se utterly honourable. What actually shocks me is the way they are treated. Firstly, of course, we find the famous ‘values’. Ah! Values! Culture! Heritage! They never fail to adorn the end of speeches, but you can’t help feeling that they are not the heart of the matter – rather some kind of flourish, so to speak, the rococo of political discourse. I was recently disturbed by something Angela Merkel said on this subject: “Europe is not a Christian club, Europe is a club of values”. As though there were some primary contradiction between Christianity and values! If she had said: “Europe is not a Christian club, Europe is a ecumenical club” or “Europe is not a club of madmen, Europe is a club of values” – that would have been logical. But, as it stands, her sentence suggests a serious lack of understanding of values, Christianity and Europe.“

Uit: From Beach Party to Broadway Interview met Rich Orloff in The Dramatist, 2001)

“RO:  Did it feel like you were at home, once you tried drag?

CB:   Yes, it was interesting.  I guess other actors have felt that when they’ve played a certain character role, maybe, that freed them.  Somehow, by getting away from myself, I almost could be more myself.  By having the trappings of drag or a female character, I suddenly had much more authority than before, but then I got away from it.  After I graduated, I came back to New York and didn’t know how I was going to pursue this career.  It was easiest to become a solo performer, where I didn’t have to pay other actors.  For the next eight years, I was a solo performer, and it was almost like I was in vaudeville.

I did an act where I would be in a certain neutral costume and would play these different characters.  I love narrative, so it wasn’t like an Eric Bogosian play where I played one character then another, it was always a whole story, almost like a screenplay, where I played all the characters.  I’d spin around, and I’d be the old woman.  Then I’d spin around, and I’d be the young man.  I had a repertoire of pieces, and I booked myself all over the country.  I was so industrious back then, I would show up in Indianapolis.  I’d make an appointment with the artistic director of a nonprofit theater and do my act for him in his office.  Then, I hoped, they’d book me to come back six months later.  It amazes me that I did it.  I had this circuit worked out, from San Francisco to Chicago and Washington, doing my act.

I performed in front of every audience: gay, straight.  Very much like vaudeville, I’d perform in movie theaters, bathhouses, bars, nonprofit theaters, and restaurants.  I learned so much as a performer and as a writer.  I learned economy as a writer, because as a solo performer, with no set, nothing, I had to instantly let the audience know where I am, what the period is, who I am, everything.  It was a wonderful experience, but it was a very frustrating period, too.  I got to the point where I was good and could sellout on a rainy Tuesday in Santa Cruz.  I was a big star in San Francisco and sold out, but I couldn’t earn a living.  I couldn’t find a manager, and I couldn’t book myself very solidly.  There would be four months with nothing, and so I did every awful job.  I was an office temp, an ice cream scooper.  For a while, I gave hot tips on the telephone on what sporting events to gamble on.  I draw well, so I was a quick-sketch portrait artist on the sidewalk for about ten years, off and on.”

Dear Morrissey,

I’m feeling dead depressed and down. Like a street-lamp without a bulb or a goose at the onset of Christmas time. Anyroad, I thought I’d pen a few lines to someone who’d understand. I know you probably won’t answer this; I don’t know if it’ll even get to you. And, anyhow, even if you wrote back which I know is highly dubious it wouldn’t get to me because I’ll have gone. The above address is just a service station I’m stopped at. I’ll probably not even post it. I’m writing this in the book I use for writing my lyrics and putting my ideas down. It’s sort of a journal, I suppose; although that makes it sound more important than it really is. Anyroad, that’s what I’m writing in as I sit here amongst the truckers and the tourists and the travellers and the transients. It’s just occurred to me that you might have been in this cafeteria yourself, perhaps in the early days, on the way back from a gig and you and the lads pulled in for a cup of tea. It’s a sort of comfort, the thought that you could have been here, Morrissey, perhaps even sitting at this very table that I’m sat at now. I wonder what your thoughts were as you sat in this shrine of self-service gratification, with its granary bar and its battered cod and its breadcrumbed haddock beached on a hotplate, far far from the rolling sea. I’m sitting here opposite a dead fat truck driver who’s giving me a lift. I wish the bastard hadn’t stopped for me. I could have walked here faster. It’s taken nearly two hours to get from Manchester to here because he can’t drive past a café or a service station without stopping for something to eat.

When I climbed into his cab he said, ‘Where y’ goin’?’

I said, ‘Grimsby.’

He said, ‘What for?’

I said, ‘To work.’

He nodded over at my guitar. ‘What,’ he said, laughing at me, ‘busking?’

‘No,’ I said, ‘working on a building site!’ He looked a bit dubious.

‘Just doing a bit of labouring,’ I said, ‘and making tea and that.’

He nodded. And then he said, ‘How come you’re going all the way over there to find work?”
