— Bourrette, certainement, Bourrette… monsieur.

— Quoi, Icétas a donc péri ?

»Was?« fragte Michael und sah Claude Zoret ins Gesicht.

Uit: The Collector

“It was one of the conclusions arrived at by Adelung, that the same language would not maintain itself beyond the limit of a hundred and fifty thousand square miles; but by means of books the limits of the world alone are the limits within which language and the enjoyment of it can be confined. Letters waft a sigh from Indus to the Pole, and printed volumes carry thoughts that breathe and words that burn over the great oceans from one quarter of the world to another.
Such a volume is the one now in the hand of the reader. It is freighted with a dozen pleasant papers or essays, the subjects of which are not confined to America exclusively. They furnish us with text, and afford opportunity for illustrative comment.
Profiting by this opportunity, let me commence by observing, in reference to the opening essay, that the inns and taverns of London underwent a great change after the death of James the First. The rights of honest topers were suppressed by his son King Charles, who, for the poor[Pg 2] fee of an annual three pounds sterling, granted licences to tavern-keepers to sell wines at what prices they pleased, in spite of all statutes to the contrary! You may fancy how flushed the face of a thirsty Cockney might become, who, on putting down his eightpence for a quart of claret, was told by Francis, the drawer, that the price was a full quarter noble, or ‘one-and-eightpence’!
Lord Goring, who issued these licences, pocketed a respectable amount of fees in return. By statute, London had authority only for the establishment of forty taverns. But what did roystering George Goring care for statute, since the king gave him licence to ride over it? Taverns multiplied accordingly, not only in the city but in those ‘suburbs,’ as they were once called, fragrant Drury Lane and refined ‘Convent Garden.’ With competition came lower prices, however, and the throats of the Londoners were refreshed, while their purses were not so speedily lightened.
Jolly places they became again; but when they not only increased all over the town, but took to ‘victualling,’ as it was termed, as well as ‘liquoring,’ the authorities began to inquire into the matter. With the claret that was drunk, a corresponding amount of venison was eaten. At the same time the king’s bucks began to disappear, and suspicion arose that gentlemen in taverns dined off his sacred majesty’s deer! A watch was set to prevent such felonious fare being carried into London from any of the royal parks, chases, or forests. Still haunches smoked on the boards of those naughty victualling taverns, and haughty Cockneys, ‘greatly daring, dined’! The stolen bucks were smuggled in over Bow Bridge; and not till that passage was occupied by representatives of legal[Pg 3] authority did the venison intended for the court cease to find its way into the city.”

“ANTONIA Why?
NANNA Because the reverend father summoned the three friars and leaning on the shoulder of one of them, a tall, soft-skinned rascal who had shot up prematurely, he ordered the others to take his little sparrow, which was resting quietly, out of its nest. Then the most adept and attractive young fellow of the bunch cradled the General’s songster in the palm of his hand and began stroking its back, as one strokes the tail of a cat which first purrs, then pants, and soon cannot keep still. The sparrow lifted its crest, and then the doughty General grabbed hold of the youngest, prettiest nun, threw her tunic over her head, and made her rest her forehead against the back of the bed. Then, deliberately prying open with his fingers the leaves of her ass-hole Missal and wholly rapt his thoughts, he contemplated her crotch, whose form was neither close to bone with leanness nor puffed out with fat, but something in between — rounded, quivering, glistening like a piece of ivory that seems instinct with life.
Those tiny dimples one sees on pretty women’s chins and cheeks could also be seen on her dainty buttocks, whose softness was softer than that of a mill mouse born and raised in flour, and that nuns limbs were all so smooth that a hand placed gently on her loins would have slid down her leg as quickly as a foot slides on ice, and hair no more dared grow on her than it would on an egg.
ANTONIA So the father General consumed his day in contemplation, eh?”

Sunday Morning Bells

From the near city comes the clang of bells:
Their hundred jarring diverse tones combine
In one faint misty harmony, as fine
As the soft note yon winter robin swells.–
What if to Thee in Thine Infinity
These multiform and many-colored creeds
Seem but the robe man wraps as masquers’ weeds
Round the one living truth Thou givest him–Thee?
What if these varied forms that worship prove,
Being heart-worship, reach Thy perfect ear
But as a monotone, complete and clear,
Of which the music is, through Christ’s name, Love?
Forever rising in sublime increase
To ‘Glory in the Highest,–on earth peace?’

Green Things Growing

O the green things growing, the green things growing,
The faint sweet smell of the green things growing!
I should like to live, whether I smile or grieve,
Just to watch the happy life of my green things growing.

O the fluttering and the pattering of those green things growing!
How they talk each to each, when none of us are knowing;
In the wonderful white of the weird moonlight
Or the dim dreamy dawn when the cocks are crowing.

I love, I love them so – my green things growing!
And I think that they love me, without false showing;
For by many a tender touch, they comfort me so much,
With the soft mute comfort of green things growing.

And in the rich store of their blossoms glowing
Ten for one I take they’re on me bestowing:
Oh, I should like to see, if God’s will it may be,
Many, many a summer of my green things growing!

But if I must be gathered for the angel’s sowing,
Sleep out of sight awhile, like the green things growing,
Though dust to dust return, I think I’ll scarcely mourn,
If I may change into green things growing.

Uit: The Year of the Hare (Vertaald door Herbert Lomas)

“Vatanen took the hare in his arms and went out on to the ice, thinking he’d take a walk across the bay, sort his thoughts out and calm down. It was about half a mile to the farther shore.
When he was half-way across, the ravers loosed a couple of large hounds at him. They’d spotted the hare he was carrying. “After ‘em! After ‘em!” they shouted.
The yelping hounds tore across the ice in hot pursuit. The hare took to its heels, and, seeing it on the run, the hounds broke into a fierce baying. Their big paws slithered on the ice as they hurtled past Vatanen and vanished into the trees across the bay.
Vatanen pursued them to the headland, wondering how he could save his hare. What he needed was a gun, but that was hanging on a nail at Läähkimä Gulf.
Several men came running out of the villa, carrying guns. Bellowing as they run, they were like the hounds they’d loosed. The ice bent under their weight.
Vatanen concealed himself among the trees, for as soon as they got to the headland, they fired in his direction. He was lying in the slushy snow, hearing the peevish mumbling of drunken men.
The hare was already far off, the baying of the hounds scarcely audible. Their cry was actually a howl; so the hunt was still on, the hare still alive.“

Uit: The Year of the Hare (Vertaald door Herbert Lomas)

“The journalist sat on the edge of the ditch, holding the hare in his lap, like an old woman with her knitting on her knees, lost in thought. The sound of the car engine faded away. The sun set.

The journalist put down the hare on the grass. For a moment he was afraid it would try to escape; but it huddled in the grass, and when he picked it up again, it showed no sign of fear at all. ‘So here we are,’ he said to the hare. ‘Left.’

That was the situation: he was sitting alone in the forest, in his jacket, on a summer evening. No disputing it—he’d been abandoned.

What does one usually do in such a situation? Perhaps he should have responded to the photographer’s shouts, he thought. Now maybe he ought to find his way back to the road, wait for the next car, hitch a ride, and think about getting to Heinola, or Helsinki, under his own steam. The idea was immensely unappealing. The journalist looked in his briefcase. There were a few banknotes, his press card, his health insurance card, a photograph of his wife, a few coins, a couple of condoms, a bunch of keys, an old May Day celebration badge.

And also some pens, a notepad, a ring. The management had printed on the pad Kaarlo Vatanen, journalist. His health insurance card indicated that Kaarlo Vatanen had been born in 1942.

Vatanen got to his feet, gazed at the sunset’s last redness through the trees, nodded to the hare. He looked toward the road but made no move that way. He picked up the hare off the grass, put it tenderly in the side pocket of his jacket, and left the clearing for the darkening forest.”

Sogar kriminelle Verstöße hatte man ihm zur Last gelegt.

Uit: The Sea Came in at Midnight

„So Louise became something more profound than tormented: she became haunted. Having traficked in the sort of memories people had spent thousands of years trying to forget, and the sort of dreams they had spent thousands of years trying to awake from, she had wandered at will and without accountability on the apocalyptic landscape of the imagination. Now a stain spread from the darkest center of the unaccountable imagination, becoming only more confounding and unbearable with every moment, the question of when and where the imagination becomes accountable by and to whom, beginning with the one who imagines a nightmare simply for the thrill of its imagining, moving to the one who renders it an artifact to be experienced in common by others, eventually to the collective audiencethat chooses to watch, for the thrill of watching, a girl actually being murdered in a movie, to the individual man or woman who, before suppressing it in horror, entertains a fleeting curiosity, dallying with the temptation to look, then finally conforming to whatever sick social chic compels everyone at a cocktail party to watch, like they would watch the home movie of a summer vacation or a child getting his first bike. At what point, if any, in the exchange betweenthe one whpo bears the fruitof the imagination and the one who devours it, does it all stop short of being beyond the pale, at what point is everyone complicit, at what point can one consider himself unaccountable for what the imagination has wrought, right up until the moment that he is damned by it?“

Uit: A Defense of Enthusiasm

The best countenances the old painters have bequeathed to us are those of cherished objects intimately associated with their fame. The face of Raphael’s mother blends with the angelic beauty of all his madonnas. Titian’s daughter and the wife of Corregio again and again meet in their works. Well does Foscolo call the fine arts the children of Love. The deep interest with which the Italians hail gifted men inspires them to the mightiest efforts. National enthusiasm is the great nursery of genius. When Cellini’s statue of “Perseus” was first exhibited on the Piazza at Florence, it was surrounded for days by an admiring throng, and hundreds of tributary sonnets were placed upon its pedestal. Petrarch was crowned with laurel at Rome for his poetical labors, and crowds of the unlettered may still be seen on the Mole at Naples, listening to a reader of Tasso. Reason is not the only interpreter of life. The fountain of action is in the feelings. Religion itself is but a state of the affections. I once met a beautiful peasant woman in the valley of the Arno, and asked the number of her children. “I have three here and two in Paradise,” she calmly replied, with a tone and manner of touching and grave simplicity. Her faith was of the heart. Constituted as human nature is, it is in the highest degree natural that rare powers should be excited by voluntary and spontaneous appreciation.“

Octobre

Heil, mein Joko, Heil dir!

A Child’s Smile

A CHILD’S smile–nothing more;

Quiet, and soft, and grave, and seldom seen;

Like summer lightning o’er,

Leaving the little face again serene.

I think, boy well-beloved,

Thine angel, who did grieve to see how far

Thy childhood is removed

From sports that dear to other children are,

On this pale cheek has thrown

The brightness of his countenance, and made

A beauty like his own–

That, while we see it, we are half afraid,

And marvel, will it stay?

Or, long ere manhood, will that angel fair,

Departing some sad day,

Steal the child-smile and leave the shadow care?

Nay, fear not. As is given

Unto this child the father watching o’er,

His angel up in heaven

Beholds Our Father’s face for evermore.

And he will help him bear

His burthen, as his father helps him now:

So may he come to wear

That happy child-smile on an old man’s brow.

Het lied der dwaze bijen

Een geur van hoger honing

verbitterte de bloemen,

een geur van hoger honing

verdreef ons uit de woning.

Die geur en een zacht zoemen

in het azuur bevrozen,

die geur en een zacht zoemen,

een steeds herhaald niet-noemen,

ried ons, ach roekelozen,

de tuinen op te geven,

riep ons, ach roekelozen,

naar raadselige rozen.

Ver van ons volk en leven

zijn wij naar avonturen

ver van ons volk en leven

jubelend voortgedreven.

Niemand kan van nature

zijn hartstocht onderbreken,

niemand kan van nature

in lijve de dood verduren.

Steeds heviger bezweken,

steeds helderder doorschenen,

steeds heviger bezweken

naar het ontwijkend teken,

stegen wij en verdwenen,

ontvoerd, ontlijfd, ontzworven

stegen wij en verdwenen

als glinsteringen henen. –

Het sneeuwt, wij zijn gestorven,

huiswaarts omlaag gedwereld,

Het sneeuwt, wij zijn gestorven,

het sneeuwt tussen de korven.

Pierrot

Wij dansten samen of we dronken waren.

Ineengebroken I

Elkaar in één dood brekend liefgehad.

‘How much’ zei hij, ‘and where?’ Ik lachte terug, liet mijn tanden zien. ‘You look you like’, zei ik mijn lesje op, ‘Ten gulden’.’

Kleine Liefdesverklaring

Ik ben al bijna dood, en ik

zal nooit aan mensen wennen;

en ben de ergste dwaasheden ontgroeid;

al hebt u mij ten dode toe vermoeid,

ik ben te moe om dood te gaan.

Ik leef van ondergang tot ondergang;

„Peter Gregory kicked the door of the dispersal hut closed behind him with the heel of his boot. He sensed the iciness of the air outside but was too well wrapped to feel it on his skin. He looked up and saw a big moon hanging still, while ragged clouds flew past and broke up like smoke in the darkness. He began to waddle across the grass, each step won from the limits of movement permitted by the parachute that hung down behind as he bucked and tossed his way forward. He heard the clank of the corporal fitter’s bicycle where it juddered over the ground to his right. The chain needed oiling, he noted; the man was in the wrong gear and a metal mudguard was catching on the tyre with a rhythmic slur as the wheel turned.

He could see the bulk of his plane ahead, large in the night, with the three-bladed propeller stopped at a poised diagonal, the convex sweep of the upper fuselage looking sleeker in the darkness than by day. The fitter dropped his bicycle to the ground. He made his way over in the light of a feeble torch which he gripped between his teeth as he helped, with both hands braced against his parachute, to push Gregory up onto the wing. Then he clambered up himself as Gregory hoisted a leg over the side of the cockpit and slithered down inside.“

„Sometimes I’m paralyzed

by my love for him. He calls me from his bed in the middle of the night and, you know, I can’t resist. It’s the way he calls, not sleepy or frightened or crying, but determined and aware and awake….

Mama?

and I can hear the question mark so insistent it isn’t a question…it would break my heart not to answer.

In my heart he opens the door to this vast terrain of fear. It’s a fear stretching out beyond these young years of mine when mortality is supposed to be so inconceivable. How have mothers down through the ages survived their love for their kids? The thought of his mortality is abysmal to me….

One afternoon we were at the fair down by the lakeside, and a vendor had in captivity one of the owls that have invaded the city ever since the lake first appeared three years ago. She was explaining to some other mom’s kid how, far up in the sky, the owl can hear a human heartbeat, and even at that very minute I thought to myself this owl could hear Kirk’s little heart as I stood there holding him in my arms. Could it hear his heart when he was still inside me th
ree years ago? Was that my first betrayal of my boy — his birth, exposing him to the peril of owls that hear heartbeats? Every night I wait for the sun to set before writing this, there it goes now, slipping down
behind the San Vicente Bridge that

crosses the lake to the northwest, I see it from my window…sun goes down, sky goes dark, lake goes black, and owls swoop across the rising moon like leaves blown loose from some phantasmagoric tree twisting up out of the ground …”

Uit: The Professor

“The other day, in looking over my papers, I found in my copy of a letter, sent by me a year since to an old school acquaintance: —

‘Dear Charles, — I think when you and I were at Eton together, we were neither of us what could be called popular characters. You were a sarcastic, observant, shrewd, cold-blooded creature. My own portrait I will not attempt to draw, but I cannot recollect that it was a strikingly attractive one; can you? What animal magnetism drew thee and me together I know not; certainly I never experienced anything of the Pylades and Orestes sentiment for you, and I have reason to believe that you, on your part, were equally free from all romantic regard to me. Still, out of school hours, we walked and talked continually together. When the theme of conversation was our companions or our masters, we understood each other, and when I recurred to some sentiment of affection, some vague love of an excellent or beautiful object, whether in animate or inanimate nature, your sardonic coldness did not move me. I felt myself superior to that check then as I do now.

‘It is a long time since I wrote to you, and a still longer time since I saw you. Chancing to take up a newspaper of your county the other day, my eye fell upon your name. I began to think of old times, to run over the events which have transpired since we separated, and I sat down and commenced this letter. What you have been doing I know not; but you shall hear, if you choose to listen, how the world has wagged with me.

‘First, after leaving Eton, I had an interview with my maternal uncles, Lord Tynedale and the Hon. John Seacombe. They asked me if I would enter the Church, and my uncle the nobleman offered me the living of Seacombe, which is in his gift, if I would; then my other uncle, Mr. Seacombe, hinted that when I became rector of Seacombe-cum-Scaife, I might perhaps be allowed to take, as mistress of my house and head of my parish, one of my six cousins, his daughters, all of whom I greatly dislike.”

On marchait vers Moscou. On marchait depuis trois mois.”

Apotheosis

His bonce high-domed like a skep, the bee-man
holds forth on how to pick a bee up by its wings
which are strong enough — it stands to reason —
to bear the weight without harm to their hinges.
As though he were a banjo-player and the bee’s wings
were a two-ply, fine abalone plectrum,
he demonstrates with a bumblebee on the windowframe
the exact grip between forefinger and thumb

but slips on the waxed oak floor, his arm outstretched,
neither tightening nor, regardless of his own fate,
loosening his hold on the bee one micro-notch.
I try to break his fall but move too late
for, with a dry hum, he streaks off out of reach
through the open window, still holding forth the bee.

Niemand geloofde mijn gespreide armen.

“There was no possibility of taking a walk that day. We had been wandering, indeed, in the leafless shrubbery an hour in the morning; but since dinner (Mrs. Reed, when there was no company, dined early) the cold winter wind had brought with it clouds so sombre, and a rain so penetrating, that further out-door exercise was now out of the question.
I was glad of it: I never liked long walks, especially on chilly afternoons: dreadful to me was the coming home in the raw twilight, with nipped fingers and toes, and a heart saddened by the chidings of Bessie, the nurse, and humbled by the consciousness of my physical inferiority to Eliza, John, and Georgiana Reed.
The said Eliza, John, and Georgiana were now clustered round their mama in the drawing-room: she lay reclined on a sofa by the fireside, and with her darlings about her (for the time neither quarrelling nor crying) looked perfectly happy. Me, she had dispensed from joining the group; saying, “She regretted to be under the necessity of keeping me at a distance; but that until she heard from Bessie, and could discover by her own observation, that I was endeavouring in good earnest to acquire a more sociable and childlike disposition, a more attractive and sprightly manner– something lighter, franker, more natural, as it were–she really must exclude me from privileges intended only for contented, happy, little children.”
“What does Bessie say I have done?” I asked.
“Jane, I don’t like cavillers or questioners; besides, there is something truly forbidding in a child taking up her elders in that manner. Be seated somewhere; and until you can speak pleasantly, remain silent.”

Me trompé-je ?

– Monsieur Sénécal, je vais me lever.
– Allez me chercher du papier.

Oil and Blood

Sleep on my chosen one it’s only me
intent as a Madagascan sloth that moves
through the tall twilight of mahogany,
padding down the wall towards your pillowcase
and the hollows of your neck I ache for.
Lifting one knee, you shape a linen vault
that frees the scent of nard and nightflowers.
Does my dark disturb you, sweetheart, do you dream
of the rooftree burdened by a roost of bats,
your outline inscaped by their squeaky jargon?

Within a tongue’s length of your ear lobe,
I could consume whole nights in this vestibule
of paradise if waiting weren’t such hell
or if Van Helsing, that bony eunuch,
weren’t striding upstairs with his cricket bag
full of sharpened stumps and oil of garlic,
the paraphernalia of intolerance.
Let him come. Rather than leave you be
I’d have the sun impale me and the breeze distress
my mouldy flavoured, still enamoured dust.
