Of nee, dertien.

In Memoriam

Today is Sunday.
I fear the crowd of my fellows with such faces of stone.
From my glass tower filled with headaches and impatient Ancestors,
I contemplate the roofs and hilltops in the mist.
In the stillness—somber, naked chimneys.
Below them my dead are asleep and my dreams turn to ashes.
All my dreams, blood running freely down the streets
And mixing with blood from the butcher shops.
From this observatory like the outskirts of town
I contemplate my dreams lost along the streets,
Crouched at the foot of the hills like the guides of my race
On the rivers of the Gambia and the Saloum
And now on the Seine at the foot of these hills.
Let me remember my dead!
Yesterday was All Saints’ Day, the solemn anniversary of the Sun,
And I had no dead to honor in any cemetery.
O Forefathers! You who have always refused to die,
Who knew how to resist Death from the Sine to the Seine,
And now in the fragile veins of my indomitable blood,
Guard my dreams as you did your thin-legged migrant sons!
O Ancestors! Defend the roofs of Paris in this dominical fog,
The roofs that protect my dead.
Let me leave this tower so dangerously secure
And descend to the streets, joining my brothers
Who have blue eyes and hard hands.

Uit: The Pasha’s Concubine (Vertaald door Joseph Hitrec e.a.)

„In the forenoon of the second day, as he was returning from the drill field, the Pasha and his escort found themselves in the bazaar. They rode cautiously over the thawing ice. It was a market day, and in front of the Garić Bakery their way was blocked by some peasants’ horses laden with wood. While the flustered farmers began to hop and skip around the stubborn horses, the Pasha cast a glance into the bakery. Next to the closed brick oven stood the old baker Ali, stoop-shouldered, with rheumy, wizened eyes out of which tears kept oozing on his great white mustache. At the wide-open shopwindow, among the bread loaves and pans of meat and pies, was his daughter Mara. On her knees and propped on the counter with one arm, she had stretched the other for a platter on a shelf underneath. When she heard the shouts of the soldiers and the stamping of the peasants’ horses, she lifted her head, and the Pasha, seeing her wrapped like this around the counter, fell in love with her round, childish face and her merry eyes.

When he rode that way again in the afternoon, the bakery was deserted, the window half-shuttered, and on the sill was a purring cat with signed white hair.

He gave orders that the girl be found and brought to him. The noncommissioned officers and town constables ran eagerly to carry them out. He stayed over till noon of the third day, when they reported that the matter could be arranged. The girl had no one except her father. Her mother had been well-known Jelka, named Hafizadić after the old Mustaybey Hafizadić, who had kept her for several years and then married her off to this Garić, a quiet and simple-minded young man, to whom he had also given money to open the bakery.

The Pasha left some money and entrusted the matter to his old acquaintance Teskeredžić. And toward the end of March, on another market day, they brought the girl to him at Sarajevo.

The Pasha had not been wring in his judgment. She was the kind of woman he had always sought and particularly esteemed, the only kind that still attracted him. She was not quite sixteen. She had big eyes of a dovelike shade and muted porcelain luster, which moved languidly. Her hair was quite fair, heavy, and thick, such as was seldom seen on women in this region. Both her face and her arms were covered with a fine, light down that was noticeable only in sunlight.“

The Living Were Dying

Walled in, the living were dying
black flies laid eggs
in human flesh.
Day in and day out
the streets were paved
with swollen heads.

The father, Aaron
had a beard of mildew and moss
and a head of white light
which died out flickering
before he expired he ate out of a hand
with his wilting lips
and opening his turquoise eyes.

In the little room
bodies were swelling.
Sally sold apples
silver ones smelling of an orchard
in front of the gate
which was made of azure.

Between gibberish
and red spittle
between the scabies of the wall
and the corpse of the passerby
with a cruel eye
between the stone
and the howling of a madwoman
Sally stood in her red dress
and the colors were absorbing venoms
and the apple rotted in her swarthy
hands. A white worm crawled out
from the smell.
Apples were wilting apples were rotting
mother was dying.

No one brought apples to the ghetto any more
no one in the ghetto bought apples any more.
Day in and day out
bodies were falling down.

Uit: Ich will Zeugnis ablegen bis zum letzten, Tagebücher 1933-1945

„Dienstag 19.

Here, in my Moscow, – cupolas shine

Here, in my Moscow, – cupolas shine.
Here, in my Moscow, – church bells chime.
And tombstones, here, all stand aligned,
Tsarinas sleep there, and tsars.

You don’t know, but in the Kremlin, at dawn,
The air is lightest – and just here alone!
You don’t know, but in the Kremlin, each dawn,
I pray to you – until dusk.

And you stroll along your Neva River, slow,
While I stand alone where my Moskva flows.
With my head bowed low, I watch the blurry glow –
Streetlamps in the dusk.

With my whole insomnia, I’m in love with you,
With my whole insomnia, I am harking you,
While sextons awake in the Kremlin to
Carry out their morning tasks.

But, my Joy, my river – with your river still…
But, my Joy, my arm – with your arm, I feel,
Will not come together, at least, until
The dawn catches the dusk.

I like the fact that you’re not mad about me

I like the fact that you’re not mad about me,
I like the fact that I’m not mad for you,
And that the globe of planet earth is grounded
And will not drift away beneath our shoes.
I like the fact that I can laugh here loudly,
Not play with words, feel unashamed and loose
And never flush with stifling waves above me
When we brush sleeves, and not need an excuse.

I like the fact that you don’t feel ashamed
As you, before my eyes, embrace another,
I like the fact that I will not be damned
To hell for kissing someone else with ardor,
That you would never use my tender name
In vain, that in the silence of the church’s towers,
We’ll never get to hear the sweet refrain
Of hallelujahs sung somewhere above us.

With both, my heart and hand, I thank you proudly
For everything, – although you hardly knew
You loved me so: and for my sleeping soundly,
And for the lack of twilight rendezvous,
No moonlit walks with both your arms around me,
No sun above our heads or skies of blue,
For never feeling – sadly! – mad about me,
For me not feeling – sadly! – mad for you.

Verse

Und auch die Nächte dieser Stadt
Sind unterhöhlt von den stürzenden Glocken.
Uns Nackten wehen in ihr Bad
Des Rausches von ruhlosen Lippen Flocken.

Wo du an überlaubtem Tor

Unbestimmter Erregtheit.
Pferd wartet um sich dunkle Höfe
Und ein Lied aus Kanal oder Lichtschacht.
Über asphaltenen Zeilen
Kreuzen sich Suchaugen
Ungenau.
Aufschwelen Brauen
In denen Tag nachzittert
Und etwas wie
Erwartung steht auf –

O dieser Stunde –
Wo ist
Der sich wühlt unter die kündende Liebe
Eures Tagverhaltenseins,

„Prologue

For as long as anyone can remember, the little café known as “Lutovo’s”  has stood at the far end of the Travnik bazaar, below the shady, clamorous source of the “Rushing Brook”. Not even the oldest people can remember Lutvo, its first proprietor. He has lain for at least a hundred years in one of the cemeteries scattered throughout Travnik, but everyone goes to Lutovo’s for coffee and his name is still recalled and mentioned while so many sultans, viziers and beys have been  long forgotten. In the garden of this little café, at a foot of a hill, a gentle secluded slope rises up against a cliff, in the shade of an old lime tree. Low benches of irregular shapes have been fitted together around the tree, among boulders and tufts of grass, making a place where it is pleasant to sit for a while and always hard to leave. The benches are weather-worn and warped by the years and long use- they have merged completely with the tree, earth and rock around them.

During the summer months, from the beginning of May to the end of October, this was by ancient tradition the place where the Travnik beys and other notables admitted to their company gathered, about the time of the afternoon prayer. At the time of day, none of the other townspeople would presume to sit and drink coffee here. The spot was known as “The Sofa”. For generations this word had a clear social and political meaning in the popular speech of Travnik, because whatever was said, discussed and decided “on the Sofa” had almost the weight of a resolution of the counsellors at the Vizier’s Divan.

On the last Friday of October 1806, some dozen beys were sitting there, although the sky was already overcast and a wind was getting up, which always meant rain at this time of year. Each in his own set place, the beys were talking in low voices. Most of them pensively watching the plat of sun and clouds, smoking chibouks and coughing tetchily. They were discussing an important piece of news.

One of them, a certain Suleiman Bey Ajvaz, had recently travelled to Livno on business. While he had met a man from Split,a reliable person, he said, who had told him the news he was now recounting to the others. They could not make it out and kept asking for details and making him repeat what he had already said.“

sie sind zufrieden, satt und haben Spaß;
Ich seufze fassungslos auf offener Straß’,
die Hummeln überall, wo ich auch lauf’

Guten Morgen Hummelchen! – Wie – Guten Morgen?
Monsieur Horniss! Wozu das Wagen, Pricken?
Warum nicht minder Groß’ und Kleine pieken?

Wofür? Kennst du denn keine andren Sorgen?
Ja gottbewahr! – Da ist noch Honig drin!
Doch Mittag soll er schon zur Königin!

Aspiration

The sweetness of poverty like this…
To lose everything your, even the egoism of being,
So poor that you can only belong to the crowd…
I gave away everything mine, I spent all my being,
And I possess only what in me is common to all..
The sweetness of poverty like this…

I am not lonely any more, I am dissolved among equal men!

I have walked. Long my way
The emphatic mark of my steps
Remained on ground wet with morning dew.

Then the Sun ascended, heat vibrated in the air
In golden particles of light and warm breath.

The ground burned and hardened.
The mark of my feet is now invisible…

But the Earth remains, the tenderly dumb Earth,
And growing, grieving, dying in Earth,
The always equal men remain…

And I feel larger, equalizing myself to the equal men!…

The Girl And The Goat

The girl fights to pull the goat,
Totally terrified, sliding on the pavement
Among the bells of the streetcars
And the speed of the dusty automobiles.

…A whole herd of goats…
The goats graze on the mid-day grass…
And in the dead solitude of the mountain
Not a single sound of a car horn.
Ugly dog with big eyes hidden in his hair,
Near he stones moved by the little lizards,
Where the hot sun flounders in the troubled water,
Fixes his teeth in the golden cheese
Licias, the herdsman.

„SEMMELWEIS: Child-bed fever is a blood poisoning, brought about by a septic virus which is generated in the cadavers. If it is introduced into the bloodstream of a living body, it will die. The viral agents enter the blood of the pregnant women by way of the hands of the physicians or others during examinations. It is the students who-with their fingers soiled from the autopsies-transmit germs from the cadavers to the genitals of the pregnant women. That’s the theory.

SKODA: It seems… [He stops, stiffens and stares at him] If you are right about this, you will never be forgiven.

SEMMELWEIS: What do you mean, Citizen Skoda?

SKODA: That is unforgivable.

SEMMELWEIS: It’s the truth.

SKODA: [pacing] Do you know what you’re saying? When the physician sits at the bedside of the sick, he is not the doctor, he is the disease!

SEMMELWEIS: That’s true.

SKODA: You are saying that everyone who has dealt with patients in this manner has personally transmitted the disease!

SEMMELWEIS: Yes.

SKODA: What do you think that your typical obstetrician will say to the accusation? Do you think they would confess to having killed hundreds of thousands?

SEMMELWEIS: People must yield to the facts.

SKODA: People will not do so. You will be attacked as a slanderer, a dilettante, an ignoramus, a maniac, a hateful, malicious grumbler.

To New York
(for jazz orchestra and trumpet solo)

I.
New York! At first I was bewildered by your beauty,
Those huge, long-legged, golden girls.
So shy, at first, before your blue metallic eyes and icy smile,
So shy. And full of despair at the end of skyscraper streets
Raising my owl eyes at the eclipse of the sun.
Your light is sulphurous against the pale towers
Whose heads strike lightning into the sky,
Skyscrapers defying storms with their steel shoulders
And weathered skin of stone.
But two weeks on the naked sidewalks of Manhattan—
At the end of the third week the fever
Overtakes you with a jaguar’s leap
Two weeks without well water or pasture all birds of the air
Fall suddenly dead under the high, sooty terraces.
No laugh from a growing child, his hand in my cool hand.
No mother’s breast, but nylon legs. Legs and breasts
Without smell or sweat. No tender word, and no lips,
Only artificial hearts paid for in cold cash
And not one book offering wisdom.
The painter’s palette yields only coral crystals.
Sleepless nights, O nights of Manhattan!
Stirring with delusions while car horns blare the empty hours
And murky streams carry away hygenic loving
Like rivers overflowing with the corpses of babies.

with silences with words

as if they had another

life to live

they do so

as if they had forgotten

that their bodies

are inclined to death

that the insides of men

easily break down

ruthless with each other

they are weaker

than plants and animals

they can be killed by a word

by a smile by a look

The Survivor

I am twenty-four

led to slaughter

I survived.

The following are empty synonyms:

man and beast

love and hate

friend and foe

darkness and light.

The way of killing men and beasts is the same

I’ve seen it:

truckfuls of chopped-up men

who will not be saved.

Ideas are mere words:

virtue and crime

truth and lies

beauty and ugliness

courage and cowardice.

Virtue and crime weigh the same

I’ve seen it:

in a man who was both

criminal and virtuous.

I seek a teacher and a master

may he restore my sight hearing and speech

may he again name objects and ideas

may he separate darkness from light.

I am twenty-four

led to slaughter

I survived.

Uit: Ich will Zeugnis ablegen bis zum letzten, Tagebücher 1933-1945

10. März
, Freitag abends

30. Januar: Hitler Kanzler.

IMPROMPTU OF THE DEAD BOY

Dead, the rests sweetly among the flowers in his coffin.

There are such moments when we living
This life of interests and struggles
Grow tired of plucking desires and worries.
Then we stop a moment, leave the murmur of the body,
The lost head ceases to imagine,
And oblivion comes sweetly.
Who then can enjoy the roses around him?
The beautiful sight that the car cuts through?
The thought that makes him a hero?…
The body is a veil upon the furniture<
A gesture that stopped in the middle of the road,
A gesture we have forgotten.
Dead, he sweetly forgets among the flowers in his coffin.

He doesn´t seem to sleep, nor do I say the dreams happily;
he is dead.
In a moment of life the spirit forgot and stopped.
Suddenly he was frightened by the noise of tears,
Perhaps he felt a great frustration
For having left life while so strong and so young.

He felt spite and did not move any more.
And how he will not move any more.

Go away! go away, dead boy!
Oh, go away: I do not know you any more.
Do not return at night to flash on my destiny
The light of your presence and your desire to think!
Do  not offer me again your courageous hope,
Nor ask of me the shape of the Earth for your dreams!

The universe bellows with grief at the flaming of fires,
The terrified alarms cross in the air,
And my peace is enormous and unbearable!
My tears fall upon you and you are like a broken Sun.
What freedom in your obilivion!
What firm independence in your death!
Oh, go away: I do not know you any more!

MOMENT

The wind cuts everything in two.
Only a wish for neatness binds the world…

There is sun. There was rain. And the wind
Scatters trombones of cloud in the blue.

Nobody can be whole in the city.
The doves cling to skyscrapers, it rains.
It is cold. It is heartache… It is this violent wind
That bursts from the caves of human earth
Demanding sky, peace, and a touch of spring.

Uit: The Caretaker (Vertaald door Esther Greenleaf Müer)

For a resident of such a distinguished and well-known madhouse as La Poudrière I must admit that I feel fine, and enjoy a bewildering degree of freedom of thought, expression and movement. At any rate greater than the stars’. And then there’s my own highly ambiguous position at the hospital. As caretaker and a kind of jack-of-all-trades (including that of observer) I have at my disposal one of the gardeners’ cottages, along with the abovementioned grape and tomato arbor: they lie at the park’s outer edge and are surrounded by a high, palisade-like fence with a heavy, lockable gate, so that when I wish I can be wholly isolated in my own world. For example I can get drunk in peace, though that happens very seldom now. And I can smoke hashish with al Assadun, even if we usually do that up in the tower at Lefèvre’s, where he has installed a first-class hi-fi set—since music is an almost indispensable part of the hash. Likewise Dr. Lefèvre and I can travel to the sun as often as we wish; this always happens at my house.

But that isn’t the most important thing; most important are the mornings and the nights, when I can be utterly undisturbed in my work, and can sit in the garden with my breakfast before proceeding up to the Institute or the clinic to discharge my more routine duties.

The grape and tomato arbor I’ve described, but the house is just as important; it’s old, whitewashed and very simple, like the oldest peasant houses in this district: dirt floor, open fireplace, heavy ceiling beams and a very small sleeping alcove. Outside: the brook, some leafy trees and the plants. Best of all are the mornings, going out barefoot and almost naked right after sunrise, feeling the spicy, fresh scent, the cool morning air, and looking at the light in the treetops or the espaliers. I get a boundless pleasure from these simple things; strictly speaking it’s the only happiness I have. I prefer each day to be exactly like the one before.

This has brought me complete clarity of soul, the old man’s peace, a quiet heart. Perhaps I miss the sea at times, I don’t know.

I said “as caretaker.” Of course it’s not that simple. It turns out that nothing, absolutely nothing, is simple when you look a bit more closely. Now, for example, there’s someone howling up in the clinic again; it’s probably the Russian ambassador’s wife. She cries like a wolf. In the soundless night this lonely wolf-howl from the ward cuts loose like a stripe on the black night sky, like the trail of a shooting star. The ululating, drawn-out cry is repeated a couple of times. Why do the wolves in the forest also howl thus? For all its wolfishness it’s still first and foremost a human howl. She’s probably up there hanging onto the window bars while she howls, as she usually does during attacks. If it continues, Dr. Lefèvre will have to leave his desk and his work and go over to the ward to take care of her. al Assadun can’t do it because she always tries to rape him.“

Noliwe

The weakness of the heart is holly…

Ah! You think that I never loved her

My Negress fair with palmoil, slender as a plume

Thighs of a starlet otter, of Kilimanjaro snow

Breasts of mellow rice-fields, hills of acacias under the

East Wind.

Noliwe with her arms of boas, lips of the adder

Noliwe, her eyes were constellations there is no

need of moon or drum

But her voice in my head and the feverous pulse of the

night…

Ah! You think that I never loved her!

But these long years, this breaking on the wheel of the years, this carcan strangling every act

This long night without sleep I wandered like a

mare from the Zambezi, running and rushing at the

stars

Gnawed by a nameless suffering, like the leopards in the

trap.

I would not have killed her if I had loved her less.

I had to escape from doubt

From the intoxication of the milk of her mouth, from

the throbbing drum of the night of my blood

From my bowels of fervent lava, from the uranium

mines of my heart in the depths of my Blackness

From love of Noliwe

From the love of my black skinned People.

In the Winter

Bells again break the silence,

Wailing with remorse…

Only several streets divide us,

Only several words!

A silver sickle in the night,

The city sleeps this hour,

The falling snowflakes set alight

The stars upon your collar.

Are the sores of the past still aching?

How long will they abide?

You’re teased by captivating,

New and shimmering eyes.

They (blue or brown?) are dearer

Than anything pages hold!

Their lashes are turning clearer,

Out in the freezing cold…

Church bells have faded to silence

Powerless from remorse…

Only several streets divide us,

Only several words!

The silver crescent, at this hour,

Looks at poetic souls in awe,

The winds are gusting and your collar

Is covered with the snow.

This night, I wander, all alone

This night, I wander, all alone outside, –

A sleepless nun, a homeless traveler! –

I have the keys from all the gates tonight

Of this unique, and one and only capital!

Insomnia has pushed me into town,

– How stunning you appear, O dusky Kremlin! –

This night, I kiss the boisterous and round,

The hostile, warring planet on the temple!

The muggy wind blows straight into the soul.

And not the hair arises, but the fleece!

This night, alone, I pity, one and all, –

Those who are pitied presently and kissed.

A Visit

I couldn’t recognize her
when I came in here
just as well it’s possible
to take so long arranging these flowers
in this clumsy vase

‘Don’t look at me like that’
she said
I stroke the cropped hair
with my rough hand
’they cut my hair’ she says
‘look what they’ve done to me’
now again that sky-blue spring
begins to pulsate beneath the transparent
skin of her neck as always
when she swallows tears

why does she stare like that
I think I must go
I say a little too loudly

and I leave her,
a lump in my throat

Vertaald door Adam Czerniawski

In The Middle Of Life

After the end of the world
after my death
I found myself in the middle of life
I created myself
constructed life
people animals landscapes

this is a table I was saying
this is a table
on the table are lying bread a knife
the knife serves to cut the bread
people nourish themselves with bread

one should love man
I was learning by night and day
what one should love
I answered man

this is a window I was saying
this is a window
beyond the window is a garden
in the garden I see an apple tree
the apple tree blossoms
the blossoms fall off
the fruits take form
they ripen my father is picking up an apple
that man who is picking up an apple
is my father
I was sitting on the threshold of the house

that old woman who
is pulling a goat on a rope
is more necessary
and more precious
than the seven wonders of the world
whoever thinks and feels
that she is not necessary
he is guilty of genocide

this is a man
this is a tree this is bread

people nourish themselves in order to live
I was repeating to myself
human life is important
human life has great importance
the value of life
surpasses the value of all the objects
which man has made
man is a great treasure
I was repeating stubbornly

this water I was saying
I was stroking the waves with my hand
and conversing with the river
water I said
good water
this is I

the man talked to the water
talked to the moon
to the flowers to the rain
he talked to the earth
to the birds
to the sky
the sky was silent
the earth was silent
if he heard a voice
which flowed
from the earth from the water from the sky
it was the voice of another man

‘Nee nee,’ mompelde mijn biograaf, ‘nee nee…

„FORTINBRAS: Uh-huh! That’s it! (Together they hang up the wall-charts. Chart A represents, under a tremendous heading “”Man”, ordinary muscleman, with open belly, guts, sinews, eye sockets, etc. etc. Chart B, under the heading “Man—an internal combustion engine”, represents a human-looking car engine.) As you see, ladies and gentlemen, one can immediately find the analogies between (Points with a staff) the exhaust pipe and rectum, the muffler and the bowels, the lights and the eyes—even two of each!—Furthermore: cylinders and. muscles, battery and brain, carburetor and spinal cord, wires and nervous system. . . etc. etc. The car engine, however, has far greater adaptability than the human being and the internal combustion engine has no deviant opinions either. Disciplinary surgery—or, if you wish: psycho-surgery—is founded on the principle that man in his present form is of faulty construction—highly subject to subjective patterns of behaviour. Now, it goes without saying that all social problems can be solved only to the extent that we can work on non-deviant humans. This is the basis of both general social surgery as well as my own specialty: psycho- or disciplinary surgery.

NURSE (In): Excuse me, Professor, the subject of the experiment seems to be getting restless.

FORTINBRAS: (Listens with lifted eyebrows, gives a meaningful nod and points to an enormous injection syringe lying on the tea table. While he continues talking, he explains in pantomime to the nurse what she should do: points to the syringe, then to various bottles on the table, suggesting that see take a little here, a little there, and fill the syringe which must be well shaken and finally, used. He demonstrates this in pantomime of using the syringe with great force.) Later, psycho-surgery has proven itself in actual practice to be indispensable far beyond the treatment of the manifestly criminal clientele. Practically any kind of deviant behaviour can be treated in this day and age. (NURSE has filled the syringe, shakes it, squeezes out the air and carries it carefully—with the needle up in the air—out to the polyclinic. A loud, piercing and penetrating, wailing scream of pain is heard.) Psycho-surgery is also made use of as a preventive disciplinary surgery in connection with adultery, with the establishment of law and order . . . on privates or petty officers in our armed forces . . . on school children . . . on rebellious students . . . on people who wish to be alone . . . people who sleep on the stomach can be cured . . . people with warts or regular bad habits. . . . Recently I operated most successfully on a young girl for a particular form of deviant behaviour; she was. . . .

NURSE (Humbly): Excuse me, professor, but your esteemed colleague is waiting; the social surgeon is quite indignant, and says that. . . . (Whispers in FORTINBRAS’ ear)

FORTINBRAS (Lifts his eyebrows, smiles and shakes his head): No, no, no, of course not! We shall let him operate immediately. . . . (Waves the whole matter away like a fly) Let Adolf roll in the subject of the experiment, and you can fetch Professor Vivaldi yourself. . . . (Loudly to the audience) Finally, I should just like to emphasize the immense significance of my own brainchild, what is called disciplinary surgery, which is a natural extension of psycho-surgery—it is an invention which can only be compared with the work of Pasteur, and one which not only brought me the rank of general in our armed forces, but also yielded me the Nobel Peace Prize! (Bows. Applause. NURSE in. He points to the suitcases, and she opens them. While he continues talking, she takes out of the suitcases and puts on him: boots of white shiny rubber, a white, shiny operation coat which buttons in the back and has numerous bloodspots, among them an obvious blood-red handprint, and likewise footprint. She fills liquid in a wash basin, to let him sterilize his hands before holding them up in the air for a long time and letting her put rubber gloves on him, as well as a kind of white butch
er’s cap with gold trim.”

Elegy for Martin Luther King

IV

It was the fourth of April, nineteen hundred and sixty-eight,
A spring evening in a grey neighborhood, a district smelling
Of garbage mud where children played in the streets in
spring,
And spring blossomed in the dark courtyards where blue
murmuring
Streams played, a song of nightingales in the ghetto night of
hearts.
Martin Luther King chose them, the motel, the district,
The garbage and the street sweepers, with the eyes of his heart
in those
Spring days, those days of passion wherever the mud of flesh
Would have been glorified in the light of Christ.
It was the evening when light is clearest and air sweetest,
Dusk at the heart’s hour, and its flowering of secrets
Mouth to mouth, of organ and of hymns and incense.
On the balcony now haloed in crimson where the air
Is more limpid, Martin Luther stands speaking pastor to
pastor:
“My Brother, do not forget to praise Christ in his
resurrection
And let his name be praised!”
And now opposite him, in a house of prostitution,
profanation,
And perdition, yes, in the Lorraine Motel – Ah, Lorraine, ah
Joan, the white and blue woman, let our mouths purify you
Like rising incense!–In that evil house of tomcats and
pimps
A man stands up, a Remington rifle in his hands.
James Earl Ray sees the Reverend Martin Luther King,
Through his telescopic sight, sees the death of Christ: “My
brother,
Do not forget to magnify Christ in his resurrection this
evening!”
Sent by Judas, he watches him, for we have made the poor
into wolves
Of the poor. He looks through his telescopic sight, sees only
the tender
Neck so black and beautiful. He hates that golden voice
modulating
The angels’ flutes, the voice of bronze trombone that
thunders on terrible
Sodom and on Adama. Martin looks ahead at the house in
front, he sees
The skyscrapers of light and glass, He sees curly, blond heads, dark,
Kinky heads full of dreams like mysterious orchids, and the
blue lips
And the roses sing in a chorus like a harmonious organ.
The white man looks hard and precise as steel. James Earl
aims
And hits the mark, shoots Martin, who withers like a
fragrant flower
And falls. “My brother, praise His Name clearly, may our
bones
Exult in the Resurrection!”

Prayer for Peace
to Georges and Claude Pompidou

I.

Lord Jesus, at the end of this book, which I offer You
As a ciborium of sufferings
At the beginning of the Great Year, in the sunlight
Of Your peace on the snowy roofs of Paris
— Yet I know that my brothers’ blood will once more redden
The yellow Orient on the shores of the Pacific
Ravaged by storms and hatred
I know that this blood is the spring libation
The Great Tax Collectors have used for seventy years
To fatten the Empire’s lands
Lord, at the foot of this cross – and it is no longer You
Tree of sorrow but, above the Old and New Worlds,
Crucified Africa,
And her right arm stretches over my land
And her left side shades America
And her heart is precious Haiti, Haiti who dared
Proclaim Man before the Tyrant
At the feet of my Africa, crucified for four hundred years
And still breathing
Let me recite to You, Lord, her prayer of peace and pardon.

Noem me één goed boek in de wereldliteratuur.

Werk o.a: Sangenes Bog (1889), Tannhäuser (1877), Ranker og Roser (1879)

En Humlebi for Arbejdssværmens Trop.

Jeg river ned mit Værk. De bygger op,

Og er saa runde, veltilfredse, glade;

Jeg bliver hjertesyg paa aaben Gade,

Hver Gang jeg møder Humlens vævre Krop.

Godmorgen, Humlebi! — Ih hvad, Godmorgen,

Hr. Gedehams; hvorfor saa tør og prikken,

Hvorfor ej mindre stor og mindre stikken? —
