“Having returned whole from the fifth military campaign of his life, the Colonel at the end of 1871 resigned his commission and settled in Lyon. He was only sixty-five and looked so hale that his friends urged him to marry. But the Colonel did not want to marry. He said that it’s true, his legs were still strong, but he had become bored with the France of the lawyers, and he was thinking of returning to his own people. And en route, with a woman, he would have a lot of trouble.
He wanted to leave at once; he actually began seeking a buyer for his house and garden. Meanwhile three of the Colonel’s compatriots and comrades from his very first campaign had arrived in Lyon. The veterans easily found one another, still more easily renewed their acquaintance, and henceforth went about as a foursome. Desiring to drink black coffee together at a Polish café, they had to lunch together at the same restaurant. Then each might go wherever his eyes took him, so long as he reported in time for the session of whist. However, since delays would occur, for the sake of order they watched one another and—went about together all day, sometimes in twos, sometimes single-file, but usually abreast.
Their main occupation was conversing about old military campaigns and current politics. Over a year’s time, the old soldiers discovered all the errors of Kossuth, Mac-Mahon, Bazaine and earlier commanders. And the following year they drew up war plans so astute that, had they been executed, the world would have been a far different place.
In the third year, one of them died. They mourned him as a brother, but a month after the funeral they decided that the dead man’s politics had harbored a great flaw: for Bismarck, though a German, was nevertheless a genius, and who knew but he might yet be of use.
In the fourth year, a second comrade died quite unexpectedly. The Colonel took to his bed in distress and henceforth did not play whist with his remaining colleague, but only marriage. The old boys now spoke less with each other, but they read more newspapers. And having looked about them and combined what the English dailies wrote with what sometimes appeared in the German ones, they concluded that Bismarck was not at all as bad as he seemed, but that—he must be cautious… “

Uit: The New Sweet Style

“Beyond the crowd Alexander Zakharovich could make out three steps of varying shades: the first white and of marble; the second rough, of some scorched-looking stone, purple to the point of blackness; and the third of fiery scarlet porphyry. The crowd silently flowed into the tunnel. A second crowd, this one quietly waiting to greet the arrivals, came into view at the end of the cavern. The lights for the television cameras were already jutting out over their heads. Keep your cool, Korbach said to himself. Speak only Russian. No humiliating attempts at the local lingo. I’m sorry, gentlemen, the situation is unclear. For the moment, the theater still exists. The question of my position as artistic director is up in the air. There are creative forces in the United States with whom I feel an intellectual and stylistic kinship, and the purpose of my visit is to establish contact with them.
Well, then, while our five-feet-four-inch-tall protagonist, a man of not unattractive appearance, in the mold of that nineteenth-century poet and novelist Mikhail Lermontov—though with the receding hairline of the twentieth-century poet and novelist Andrei Bely—approaches the television cameras, we can use the opportunities provided by the novel’s wide open spaces to leaf through his curriculum vitae.
(…)

It was only as he approached the barrier that Korbach realized that the cameras, photographers, and TV people were not intended for him at all. The curly head of a famous tennis player protruded from a clutch of lights and recording devices.
The other people waiting were looking for their friends and relatives among the arrivals. It was at this threshold that the transatlantic phantoms of passengers materialized. A process somewhat akin to the retrieval of his luggage, only with joyful emotions expressed in a more demonstrative form. No one, however, was in a hurry to retrieve Korbach the director. He walked by the cardboard signs bearing the names of those the signs’ bearers didn’t know by sight: Vernet, Schwartzman, Zoya Betancour, Kwan Li Zhi—his name wasn’t there.”

Uit: Shadow of the Dolls

“What the men remembered was something else: a beautiful girl dancing across the television screen, her long dark hair streaming out behind her. Sometimes she wore an evening gown and swirled to an old Cole Porter tune. Sometimes she wore a little white bikini and kept the beat of a current disco hit. At the end of each commercial, she looked straight into the camera, looked straight into their eyes, and winked.
Where was she now?
She married some rich guy and moved to Europe, someone would say. Or: She went into rehab, my cousin’s best friend is married to someone in Hollywood who saw the medical charts. Or: She invested in a chain of restaurants and lost almost all her money. No one really knew. To most of the country, it seemed that she had disappeared into thin air.
In New York, no one had to ask what happened to Anne Welles.
She still made the columns, she still went to parties, she still could be seen jogging around the Central Park Reservoir in the early mornings, her thick brown hair held back with red velvet ribbon. At thirty-four she was still beautiful, though the only photographs that appeared of her anymore were the grainy black-and-white pictures taken at charity events for the Sunday society pages.“
