“A moment later she looked round. Her curiosity had got too much for her, and she caught me looking at her. Her look was uncertain.
She flushed slightly, maybe remembering the egg, and then, very quickly, she returned to her chore.
The police sergeant was making notes in a little black notebook, occasionally licking the stub of his pencil, and the other cop was standing with his mouth open watching the stretcher-bearers who seemed to be taking their time. They had laid down the stretcher on the quay and were looking enquiringly at the police sergeant, who went over and looked under the sheet which they had thrown over her when they put her on the stretcher. One of them spat. I glanced away again.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Ella’s legs move.
Four kids from somewhere or other, the kind of kids who hang about vacant lots, funeral processions, or street accidents, stood about five yards away and gaped. They had been there almost since the beginning. Now the other policeman went over to them and told them to go away.
Reluctantly, they moved farther away and lingered. They grinned and whispered to each other. Then they whooped at the gesticulating cop and ran away. But they didn’t go far, just round the corner of the shed across the quay, and I could see them poking their heads out round the corner, climbing over each other into sight. I remember one of them had flaming red hair.
The ambulance men had lifted the stretcher again but one of them stumbled. A very naked white leg slipped from under the sheet and trailed along the ground like a parsnip. I glanced at Ella.”

“Salt?” I said, the monosyllable carrying the cynical weight of my disbelief.

“Starin’ you in the face,” she said.

It was damp. I had to scrape it from the side of the dish with my knife. Ella ignored the scratching sound and Leslie, his face twitching as it sometimes did, went on reading the paper. It was only when I had began to eat my bacon that it occurred to me they’d had an egg. I could see the traces on the prongs of their forks. And after I’d gone all the way across the dock to the telephone… Leslie got up noisily, without his second cup of tea. He was embarrassed. Ella had her back to me and I swore at her under my breath. A moment later she too went up on deck, taking the kid with her, and I was left alone to finish my breakfast. young adam

We were all on deck when the ambulance arrived. It was one of those new ambulances, streamlined, and the men were very smart. Two policemen arrived at the same time, one of them a sergeant,

and Leslie went ashore to talk to them. Jim, the kid, was sitting on an upturned pail near the bows so that he would get a good view. He was eating an apple. I was still annoyed and I sat down on a hatch and waited. I looked out across the water at the black buffalo-like silhouette of a tug which crept upstream near the far shore. Beyond it on the far bank, a network of cranes and girders closed in about a ship. “To sail away on a ship like that,” I thought, “away. Montevideo, Macao, anywhere. What the hell am I doing here? The pale North.” It was still early and the light was still thin but already a saucer of tenuous smoke was gathering at the level of the roofs.

Then the ambulance men came across the quay and on to the

barge and I pointed to where we had put the body under the sacks. I left them to it. I was thinking again of the dead woman and the egg and the salt and I was bored by the fact that it was the beginning of the day and not the end of it, days being each the same as the other as they were then, alike as beads on a string, with only the work on the barge, and Leslie to talk to.”

“Spät in der Nacht, vor sehr langer Zeit, kurz bevor ich volljährig wurde, da überquerte ich die Place des Pyramides in Richtung Concorde, als ein Wagen aus der Dunkelheit auftauchte. Zunächst glaubte ich, er habe mich gestreift, dann spürte ich einen stechenden Schmerz vom Knöchel bis hinauf ins Knie. Ich war auf das Trottoir gestürzt. Doch ich schaffte es, wieder aufzustehen. Der Wagen hatte plötzlich einen Schlenker gemacht und war mit dem Geklirr zerbrechenden Glases gegen einen der Arkadenpfeiler auf dem Platz geprallt. Die Tür ging auf, und eine Frau stieg schwankend aus. Jemand, der vor dem Hoteleingang unter den Arkaden stand, hat uns ins Foyer geführt. Wir, die Frau und ich, warteten auf einem roten Lederkanapee, während er an der Rezeption telephonierte. Sie hatte sich an der Wange, auf dem Backenknochen und der Stirn verletzt, und sie blutete. Ein brünetter Klotz mit sehr kurzem Haar hat das Foyer betreten und ist auf uns zugekommen.
Draußen umringten sie den Wagen, dessen Türen offenstanden, und einer machte sich Notizen wie für ein Protokoll. Als wir in den Streifenwagen stiegen, merkte ich, daß ich keinen Schuh mehr am linken Fuß hatte. Die Frau und ich saßen nebeneinander auf der Holzbank. Der brünette Klotz hatte sich uns gegenüber auf der anderen Bank niedergelassen. Er rauchte und warf von Zeit zu Zeit einen kalten Blick auf uns. Durch das vergitterte Fenster habe ich gesehen, daß wir den Quai des Tuileries hinunterfuhren. Man hatte mir keine Zeit gelassen, den Schuh zu holen, und ich habe gedacht, daß er nun die ganze Nacht dort auf dem Trottoir liegenbleiben würde. Ich wußte nicht mehr genau, ob es ein Schuh war oder ein Tier, das ich im Stich gelassen hatte, jener Hund aus meiner Kindheit, der von einem Wagen überfahren worden war, als ich in der Nähe von Paris lebte, in einer Rue du Docteur-Kurzenne. With a jaw like that, so long and underbitten like a boxer dog, you wouldn’t have thought he could speak at all. His face wasn’t made for talking, but he forced the words out. He said it again, quiet-like.

“Venez m’aider.”

I knew what it meant. I didn’t know ten words of French total, but I knew those last two, pushed together with an apostrophe, if you wrote them out.

He looked like a cross between a lizard and a cat, or he did when he was sitting, anyway. When he stood and unfolded himself, he was the size of a pillow, maybe — but so slender, with bones so thin they must have been fragile. Something about the way he held that one wing back . . . something about his crouch, all submissive — like a dog or a kid afraid of being hit — it made me think he was a brittle little thing.

He had my attention, and he knew it. I don’t know why I thought of him automatically as a he,’ but it must have been that voice. It could’ve been a boy’s voice, if that boy were very tired, and maybe sick.

We stared at each other for a minute.

He looked at me through half-closed eyes, and he probably figured the worst. I was a mess, and I looked mean. It’d been less than a month since Normandy. I’d been lucky enough to make it past the beach, then they sent us down through France, which wasn’t half so bad — once you got past that initial reception. As soon as we got into Paris they sent me and a few others to dislodge the last of the Germans — the ones who hadn’t got the message yet that Paris had been liberated. Most of them had run out ahead of us, but there were a few here and there digging in and holding out.

I thought I’d heard something, you know how it is — down a dark alley, in a beat-up part of the city. Don’t want to look. Don’t want to check. Don’t want to go. Seen enough already.

But orders are orders, so you do it anyhow.

I told myself it was a few stray bricks, falling from an unlucky wall or a shell-battered house. I knew the Krauts hadn’t been too hard on the city, not compared to other places. But there were beat-up spots here and there, and I’d found one. I just hoped the spot was unoccupied. That was the trick.”

Cherie Priest (Tampa, 30 juli 1975)

 

De Ierse dichter en schrijver Christopher Nolan werd geboren in Dublin op 30 juli 1965 – Dublin. Nolan was sinds zijn geboorte spastisch verlamd en kon niet spreken. Schrijven kon hij uitsluitend met behulp van een speciale computer. In 1981, toen Nolan 15 jaar was, verraste hij de critici met de gedichtenbundel Dam-Burst of Dreams. Hij werd vergeleken met zijn landgenoten Yeats en James Joyce. Met Under the Eye of the Clock, een autobiografie uit 1987, won hij de Whitbread Award. Torchlight And Lazer Beams was een toneelversie van het werk. De Ierse rockgroep U2 droeg de song Miracle drug, van hun album How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, op aan Nolan. De titel The Wrong Child van het album Green van R.E.M. werd door Nolan geïnspireerd. Hij verstikte zich in februari 2009, nadat een stuk voeding in zijn luchtpijp was geraakt.

A great black kettle watched for its turn as it filibustered on the hot stove in the kitchen, while out in the drab dairy Minnie O’Brien fussed as she made ready to bring about a miracle.
The churn echoed in emptiness when she set it centre stage on the cold cement floor. A round-bellied barrel it was, its staves held together by four iron hoops. Eight days had passed since it was last used; its insides now waited their hot and cold baptism.
When Minnie felt that the churn was scrubbed enough, she set to next to sweeten its porous wood. At hand lay a bunch of freshly plucked hazel leaves, and those she thrust down inside it. Fetching then that big black kettle, she poured its boiling water in on top of the leaves. Scalded so, the leaves released their nutty sweet scent and the hot wood of the churn absorbed it into its druidic, dark drum.
Her hazel wand waved, Minnie disposed of the limp leaves before shocking the churn with, this time, icy cold water from the old spring well. Three white pails full it took to cool down the steaming hot wood, three whole pails full she used to freeze the churn in readiness for its sacramental rotations.”

‘Kom maar Kimberley! Doe de bal maar naar de buuf gooien!’

Met een klap sluit Mevrouw De Wit de keukendeur. Die stem van dat mens, niet om aan te horen. Ordinair, schel, doorrookt en Nijmeegs. Ze ratst het overgordijn dicht. Alsof dat helpt. ‘Hohohohoh!’ klinkt het mat. ‘Waar is die bal nou?’

Er zit maar een ding op: ze moet haar flat uit. Maakt niet uit waar naartoe. In de verduisterde keuken haalt ze nog even een doekje over het aanrecht en controleert ze of het gas uit is.

In het bushokje ziet ze zichzelf weerspiegelt in een billboardreclame van ‘War Child’ met daarop een tenger meisje in zwarte kleren dat een snaarinstrument vasthoudt. Op de achtergrond rokende puinhopen. Ze laat het beeld van het meisje los en verplaatst haar blik naar zichzelf, zittend op het metalen bankje. Een mollige ‘buuf’ die nodig naar de kapper moet. Volgens de dienstregeling duurt het nog vijf minuten voordat de bus komt. Vijf minuten om na te denken waarom ze zich zo aan haar buurvrouw ergert. Dolores. Ook dat nog. Het is niet alleen die naam, die stem. ‘Tuurlijk niet. Nee, het is een vrolijk mens, ze rookt als een ketter en zuipt als een tempelier. Niet dat mevrouw De Wit
daar nou behoefte aan heeft, maar ze zou wel eens wat losser willen zijn, iemand met diepgang en met wie je ook kan lachen. Een kruising tussen prinses Irene en Erica Terpstra. De buschauffeur stempelt haar strippenkaart af.”

„In dem Sommer, als ich sechzehn war, haben wir in einer großen Villa in Talloires gearbeitet. Am Abend bedienten wir bei Tisch, meine Tante und ich. Monsieur und seine Frau empfingen viele Gäste. Nachmittags fuhren sie zum Golfspielen nach Aix-les-Bains.

Die Frau war eine vornehme Blondine. Sie hatten vier Kinder, zwei Töchter in ungefähr meinem Alter, einen neunzehnjährigen Sohn und einen anderen, fünfundzwanzigjährigen, der seinen Militärdienst in Algerien ableistete.

In jenem Sommer war er für einen längeren Urlaub nach Talloires gekommen. Ein Blonder mit einer in die Stirn fallenden Haarsträhne und einem Gesicht, das meine Freundin Sylvie romantisch gefunden hätte. Er setzte oft eine verträumte oder gequälte Miene auf, aber seinen Bruder oder seine Schwestern kommandierte er mit autoritärer Stimme herum, weckte sie früh am Morgen, um mit ihnen Tennis zu spielen oder in den Segelklub nach Les Marquisats zu fahren. Morgens organisierten die beiden Brüder im Park der Villa sogenannte Liegestütz-Wettbewerbe. Es ging darum, wer länger durchhielt, wenn sie, den Körper in horizontaler Lage auf dem Rasen, die Arme anwinkelten und durchstreckten. Ich machte sein Bett und räumte sein Zimmer auf, und ich hatte auf seinem Nachttisch ein Buch bemerkt, an dessen Titel ich mich noch erinnere: Comme le temps passe!

An der Wand neben dem Bett ein großes Photo seiner Mutter, und auf seinem Schreibtisch ein Dolch in einer ledernen Scheide. Ich hatte ihn oft Tennis spielen sehen und jedesmal mit einem

anderen Mädchen. Mir fiel auf, daß er offensichtlich der Liebling seiner Mutter war und daß auch er sehr große Zuneigung für sie empfand.“

A Dark and Bloody Ground

The first time it happened—the first time anyone admits to it, anyway—was at a Decoration Day picnic being held at the battlefield at Chickamauga, Georgia. Several dozen doddering representatives of the Sons of Confederate Veterans had come together on a fine June afternoon for chicken-salad sandwiches and punch. Some sat in metal folding chairs, with their wives at their elbows, while others shuffled around the buffet table in search of the correct sliced cheese or condiment.

With so many aggravatingly credible witnesses, there was no denying that something strange had happened. People would argue the details for weeks, but this is the version I caught first. I suppose the best thing to do is tell it the local way—which is to say, this is partly how I heard it happened, and partly how I bet it happened.

He was confused to find himself in the woods.

Why would he leave us?

The soldier didn’t remember falling in the trees, and what he did remember of trees came to him in hazy fragments of gold and red—not this dark-shadowed hollow where he first arose.

Above, the canopy was green; and below, the ground was covered with new, sprouting things. Back when last he’d seen it, this had been a field. He was nearly certain of it. This whole place had been made of fields and farms, or then again, maybe it hadn’t. Maybe, if he concentrated, he could capture something else—the pressure of his arm against a tree and a squint that made his forehead ache as he leveled his rifle. How tough it must have been to fire with all those trunks in the way, with all that smoke in his eyes. How difficult to aim with all that noise in the woods around him.

How did he ever send off a single shot?

The harder he thought about it, the farther into the distance the details fled. Holding still meant holding on a few moments more, but all he could keep for sure was a dim memory of sound and smelly haze, and a nagging sense of hunger.”

“Het Duitse nationaal-socialisme is ongetwijfeld een veel pathologischer product dan het Italiaanse fascisme. Bij de Italianen ziet men altijd de poging om tot een maatschappij hier op aarde te komen, een maatschappij met imperialistische soldaten-deugden en met een cultuur die een verheerlijking wil zijn van de imperialistische pralerij. Deze verlangens worden met grote hartstochtelijkheid naar voren gebracht, en die wilde hartstocht kan, bij oppervlakkige beschouwing, voor religie doorgaan. Maar wie het nader bekijkt, ziet hoe uiterst aards zowel de opzet als de exaltatie zijn.

Iets geheel anders bemerkt men bij het Duitse fascisme. Hier is niet de Italiaanse berekening, de geestdrift voor een rationele doelstelling en de opgewondenheid die uit een geestdriftige actie voortkomt, hier is de exaltatie het primaire, men beschouwt het aardse niet als de hoofdzaak, maar als een tussenstation om van buitenwereldse gevoelens tot nog meer geëxalteerde toestanden te komen.

Geen dwaling is groter dan het verwijt zo vaak tot de Nazi’s gericht, dat zij eigenlijk nieuwe ‘materialisten’ zijn, die een soort biologisch en geografisch materialisme van ‘ras, bloed en bodem’ in de plaats van de vroegere materialismen stellen. Zowel biologische als geografische argumenten hebben hun waarde, als ze tot een realiteits-systeem behoren. Maar reeds de gang van biologie-geografie naar ‘ras’, om niet te spreken van het zo mogelijk nog zottere ‘bloed’ en het zinledige ‘bodem’, is een gang van de realiteit naar de metaphysica. En de wijze waarop dan die metaphysica tot een te aanbidden mysterie gemaakt – men zou beter kunnen zeggen ‘geneveld’ – wordt, maakt het voor alle onderzoekers duidelijk, dat we hier met een typische ideologie te doen hebben en dan nog wel met het slechtste soort ideologie, nl. met een religie, die in staat van wording, in haar mythologische faze verkeert.”

De Schotse schrijver Alexander Trocchi werd geboren op 30 juli 1925 in Glasgow. Zie ook mijn blog van 30 juli 2007.

I realised my uncle was at my side, making a laboured intro about his nephew who’s interested in writing. Just as he was about to leave us, he turned to Alex, “Thanks, very — er, interesting — but I’m not really one for poetry” as he placed Man at Leisure on the table between us. As we discussed Cain’s Book, Alex realised that my appreciation of his work was more than literary. Soon I was swept away in a series of anecdotes of Sigma, smoking opium with Jean Cocteau in Paris, being on the run from the cops and the Mafia in the States, Michael X, the 60s scene, the proposed Invisible Insurrection. Everything had looked so hopeful, but then, as he put it “Everybody started dying.” This had a very personal significance to Alex and his immediate family, way beyond the lost Jimi and Janis icons, and was my first indication that experience had changed Alex from let’s-all-get-together 60s activism to a much more withdrawn, reflective and personal scene.

“So what are you working on now?” I asked innocently, after returning from the bar with more drinks. Alex shifted, slightly uncomfortably. “Och, various things”, before digressing into tales of rip-off US Mafia publishing pirates, wannabe Dutch film-makers and their inept Young Adam project. It was a tale I would become familiar with as the years went by with no new material.

Just as Alex was no longer the firebrand activist I’d expected, nor was he the voracious smack-fiend I’d been hoping for. He had his own secure personal scene, but kept it very discreet and cautious, for good reason, as I was to find out. He was sympathetic to my riches-to-rags junk story and the hassles of the lower end of the scene, but wary of involvement. Anyway, it turned out that Sunday was always Methadone Day.
“Sorry, I can’t turn you on today, old man. Why don’t you meet me here next week, and you can come back for a hit and I’ll show you some of my stuff.”

Great! I tried to sound cool as we prepared to leave the bar. As we left, Alex casually thrust the slim volume my uncle had rejected into my hand, “Eh, you might as well have this,” he said, casually, “Give me a call next week.”

We emerged on to a bleak and wet Kensington Church St and went in separate directions. As I waited for the bus on the High Street, I opened the book and read the dedication — “To Denis, a fellow-conspirator, from Alexander Trocchi.”

Alexander Trocchi (30 juli 1925 – 15 april 1984)

 

 De Nederlandse schrijfster Pauline van der Lans werd geboren op 30 juli 1963 in Den Haag. In 2005 publiceerde ze haar debuutroman Van de wereld. Zij schrijft ook columns en artikelen voor de Nederlandse Federatie van Kankerpatiëntverenigingen en de gemeente Arnhem. En verder heeft ze losse verhalen gepubliceerd in bladen als Opzij en Margriet. In 2003 won ze de Margrietverhalenwedstrijd. Haar debuutroman gaat over een Nijmeegse arts, Albert van Rompaaij, die op non-actief wordt gesteld en daardoor de tijd krijgt om zijn leven te onderzoeken. De roman werd op 17 april 2005 feestelijk gepresenteerd in galerie Ruimte te Amsterdam.

Ineens snapte hij alles en doorzag hij de gehele wereldproblematiek, van de lemmingenplaag in Noorwegen tot de Palestijnse vliegtuigkapingen. Het toilet stonk, het zeepje in de wastafel was verworden tot een grijze klodder en een handdoek was nergens te bekennen. Het kon hem niet deren. Niets kon hem deren. De gedempte cafégeluiden werden luider bij het openen van de deur. Jan-Willem wenkte hem en wees naar een vol beugelflesje op de bar. Ten teken van begrip en dank knikte Albert hem toe. Om hem heen stonden mensen naar elkaar toegebogen te praten. De harde muziek maakte een normale conversatie onmogelijk. “In the summertime when the weather is high, you can fresh right up and touch the sky”. Overmeesterd door een blije dronkenschap overzag Albert het rumoer. Ondanks de rook en de zweterige atmosfeer drong haar musk zich op. Het mooiste meisje van de wereld. Ze lachte naar hem. Lang donker haar met een middenscheiding, zwart omlijnde ogen, een bloemetje geschilderd tussen haar wenkbrauwen. Haar huid was door de zon gebruind, haar lippen uitnodigend, haar borsten vol. Ze had een lange bordeauxrode jurk aan, overdekt met lovertjes. Om haar hals een ketting met zijn sterrenbeeld.
Ze zaten samen aan de Waal, het water klotste tegen de kant. Een verdwaalde hond snuffelde aan haar blote tenen, ze giechelde, de hond rende weg op het horen van een fluitje. Haar haar rook naar shampoo en rook, haar lippen smaakten naar chocola. Ze lachte naar hem. Vijftig meter verderop legde een plezierjacht aan, gejoel klonk over de kade. Toen ze uren later in zijn bed in slaap was gevallen, stapte hij voorzichtig over haar heen, nam een glas water en zette zachtjes een plaat op. Hij nestelde zich in zijn clubfauteuil en vol ontroering bezag hij de vage lijnen van geschilderde bloemen op haar borsten. Een startende auto gaf aan dat voor sommigen de werkdag weer begon. Een tweede auto hoorde hij al niet meer. Met een glimlach rond zijn lippen viel hij in slaap.

Patrick Modiano, Salvador Novo, Emily Brontë, Jacques de Kadt, Alexander Trocchi, Cherie Priest

De Franse schrijver Patrick Modiano werd geboren in Boulogne-Billancourt op 30 juli 1945. Hij kwam ter wereld als de zoon van een Belgische actrice en een uit het Egyptische Alexandrië afkomstige Joods-Italiaanse man, die elkaar in 1942 in Parijs ontmoetten. In 1972 ontving hij de Grand Prix du Roman van de Académie Française voor zijn derde roman, Les Boulevards de ceinture (verschenen in datzelfde jaar). Zes jaar later ontving hij de prestigieuze Prix Goncourt voor zijn eerder dat jaar verschenen roman Rue des boutiques obscures. Herinneringen aan en de zoektocht naar het eigen verleden staan centraal in Modiano’s werk. Dat werk kenmerkt zich door een gedempte, melancholieke toon die langzamerhand zijn handelsmerk is geworden.

J’en étais réduit aux suppositions. On l’avait sans doute arrêtée dans la rue. En février 1942 – deux mois avaient passé depuis sa fugue – les Allemands avaient promulgué une ordonnance interdisant aux juifs de Paris de quitter leur domicile après vingt heures et de changer d’adresse. La surveillance dans les rues était donc devenue plus sévère que les mois précédents. Quel était donc son refuge? Et comment faisait-elle pour survivre dans ce Paris-là?”

Patrick Modiano (Boulogne-Billancourt, 30 juli 1945)

 

De Mexicaanse dichter, schrijver, vertaler, televisiepresentator en ondernemer Salvador Novo werd geboren op 30 juli 1904 in Mexico City. Als bekende intellectueel oefende hij invloed uit op politiek, media, kunsten en de Mexicaanse maatschapij in het algemeen. Novo bestreed het machismo en het conservatieve katholicisme dat in de Mexicaanse cultuur dominant was alleen al door geen moeite te doen om zijn homosexualiteit te verbergen. Hij werd echter geaccepteerd door de regering en bekleedde officiele posten op het gebied van de cultuur. Ook werd hij gekozen in de Mexicaanse Taal Academie en had hij een televisieprogramma over de geschiedenis van het land.

‘Thrushcross Grange is my own, sir,’ he interrupted, wincing. ‘I should not allow any one to inconvenience me, if I could hinder it – walk in!’

The ‘walk in’ was uttered with closed teeth, and expressed the sentiment, ‘Go to the Deuce:’ even the gate over which he leant manifested no sympathising movement to the words; and I think that circumstance determined me to accept the invitation: I felt interested in a man who seemed more exaggeratedly reserved than myself.”

Emily Brontë (30 juli 1818 – 19 december 1848)

 

De Nederlandse publicist, journalist en politicus Jacques de Kadt werd geboren op 30 juli 1897 in Oss. De Kadt begon zijn politieke loopbaan als communist. Hij was medewerker aan De Nieuwe Tijd, maar werd al in 1923 geroyeerd vanwege zijn oppositie. Na deze jeugdervaringen werd hij later fel bestrijder van het communisme. Hij redigeerde samen met S. Tas het maandblad De Nieuwe Kern (1934-1940). In 1940 week hij via Londen uit naar Java, waar hij contacten legde met Nederlandse en Indonesische intellectuelen en schrijvers. Na in WO II door de Japanners geïnterneerd te zijn geweest, werkte De Kadt nog enige tijd als correspondent in Jakarta. Hij  repatrieerde in 1946, was socialistisch afgevaardigde in de Tweede Kamer (1946-1963), maar verliet echter de PvdA toen deze partij zich in links-radicale richting ontwikkelde.

In zijn hoofdwerk Het facisme en de nieuwe vrijheid (1939) verdedigt hij de democratische westerse cultuur.

Uit: Tegen het politieke gangsterisme

“Trotzky heeft zich in 1917 overgegeven aan het Leninisme en aan de zo juist geformuleerde interpretatie van het Marxisme, en hij is er nooit meer in geslaagd zich daaraan te ontworstelen. Daarom is zijn critiek op het Stalinisme nooit allesomvattend geweest en daarom heeft hij zich nooit kunnen losmaken van een principiële aanvaarding van de Russische Staat, evenmin als van een kijk op de socialistische revolutie die de aanvaarding van het gangsteristisch principe in zich sloot. Het is zijn tragedie dat hij ten slotte politiek en persoonlijk aan dat gangsterisme te gronde is gegaan.

Men komt er vanzelf toe Trotzky’s ‘Stalin’ te vergelijken met ‘Staline’,  het boek van Boris Souvarine. En dan moet men tot de conclusie komen dat Souvarine, met zijn onafhankelijkheid t.o.v. het Leninisme en van de Russische Staat, met zijn onafhankelijkheid ook t.a.v. het Marxisme, dat hij door en door kent, een veel juister beeld heeft gegeven van Stalin, z’n leven als obscuur socialistisch propagandist, z’n verwerven van bekendheid in Bolsjewistische kringen, niet door politieke of intellectuele bekwaamheid, maar als organisator van ‘onteigeningen’ die aan de grenzen van het gangsterisme liggen, en door machinaties in de partij, z’n opkomst in de leiding van de partij als instrument van Lenin, z’n fiasco als zelfstandig leider vóór Lenins komst in Rusland in 1917, z’n verdere werkzaamheden in de organisatie van de partij, waarbij hij de politieke leiding van Lenin aanvaardt, doch tegelijkertijd een geweldige persoonlijke macht weet te scheppen als bestuurder van het apparaat.”

Jacques de Kadt (30 juli 1897 – 16 april 1988)

 

De Schotse schrijver Alexander Trocchi werd geboren op 30 juli 1925 in Glasgow. Trocchi kan worden aangemerkt als een vroege wegbereider van een fusie van elementen uit de Amerikaanse underground en de Europese artistieke en politieke avant-garde: zijn kennismaking met Burroughs maakte deel uit van zijn project sigma – een forum voor ‘astronauts of inner space’. Zoals Burroughs aantrad als theoreticus en de oudere mentor van de Beat Generation, zo trad Trocchi sinds oktober 1955 op als de peetvader van de Internationale Lettristen en hun opvolger, de Internationale Situationisten. Beide bewegingen stonden een ingrijpende wijziging van maatschappelijke, culturele en artistieke verhoudingen voor. Trocchi verwierp kunst en werk als disciplinerende instituties en verdiende de kost met het schrijven van pornografische literatuur. Aangezien pornografie in Engeland verboden was verschenen enkele werken bij de Parijse uitgever Maurice Girodias die met zijn Olympia Press controversiële literatuur in het Engels en het Frans uitgaf. Trocchi was ook een junk die graag opiaten gebruikte. Hij werd in 1960 gearresteerd door de douane toen hij in het bezit van dope naar de Verenigde Staten reisde. Nadat Trocchi was opgepakt organiseerden enkele situationisten – die zich twee jaar eerder hadden opgericht – de solidariteitsactie ‘Hands Off Alexander Trocchi’. Trocchi’s novelle Young Adam uit 1957 werd in 2003 verfilmd door David Mackenzie.

De Amerikaanse schrijver Cherie Priest werd geboren in Tampa op 30 juli 1975. Haar bekendste roman is Four and Twenty Blackbirds uit 2003. Ook publiceert zij twee blogs, een persoonlijk, een een beroepshalve. Het succes van haar eerste roman werd wel toegeschreven aan haar aanwezigheid op internet en aan het “netwerk” dat zij onderhoudt met andere bloggers.

“Draw me a picture of someplace you’ve been that you liked very much,” Mrs. Patterson suggested, pronouncing each word with the firm, specific articulation peculiar to those who work with children. “It can be anyplace at all-an amusement park, a playground, a tree house or your bedroom. Maybe you went on vacation once and visited the beach. You could draw the ocean with seagulls and shells. Or maybe you went camping on the mountain. You might have gone down to the waterfall for a picnic, or up to Sunset Rock. Pick a place special to you, and when you’re finished, we’ll put your pictures up on the bulletin board in the hallway.”

I cringed, staring down at the blank sheet of coarse cream paper. Before me was a plastic tub filled with fat, fruit-scented markers, ripe for the choosing. While the other kids at my table dove into a frenzy of scribbles I stalled for time, popping the lid off each color and sniffing for inspiration.

Red is for cherries. Purple is for grape. Green is for . . . I didn’t recognize the scent.

But green is for . . . yes, green is for water.

I jammed the lid onto the back of the marker and began to scrawl a wide pool across the bottom half of the sheet. Green is for water. And for alligators. I picked up the yellow marker (supposed to be lemons, but smelled like detergent) and drew two periscope eyeballs poking up through the swirls. Then I outlined them with black (licorice) and drew a long snout with two bumps for nostrils.”
