Something About The Trees

I remember what my father told me:
There is an age when you are most yourself.
He was just past fifty then,
Was it something about the trees that make him speak?

There is an age when you are most yourself.
I know more than I did once.
Was it something about the trees that make him speak?
Only a single leaf had turned so far.

I know more than I did once.
I used to think he’d always be the surgeon.
Only a single leaf had turned so far,
Even his body kept its secrets.

I used to think he’d always be the surgeon,
My mother was the perfect surgeon’s wife.
Even his body kept its secrets.
I thought they both would live forever.

My mother was the perfect surgeon’s wife,
I can still see her face at thirty.
I thought they both would live forever.
I thought I’d always be their child.

I can still see her face at thirty.
When will I be most myself?
I thought I’d always be their child.
In my sleep it’s never winter.

When will I be most myself?
I remember what my father told me.
In my sleep it’s never winter.
He was just past fifty then.

What We Want

What we want
is never simple.
We move among the things
we thought we wanted:
a face, a room, an open book
and these things bear our names–
now they want us.
But what we want appears
in dreams, wearing disguises.
We fall past,
holding out our arms
and in the morning
our arms ache.
We don’t remember the dream,
but the dream remembers us.
It is there all day
as an animal is there
under the table,
as the stars are there
even in full sun.

Vermilion

Pierre Bonnard would enter
the museum with a tube of paint
in his pocket and a sable brush.
Then violating the sanctity
of one of his own frames
he’d add a stroke of vermilion
to the skin of a flower.
Just so I stopped you
at the door this morning
and licking my index finger, removed
an invisible crumb
from your vermilion mouth. As if
at the ritual moment of departure
I had to show you still belonged to me.
As if revision were
the purest form of love.

`Laat me even uitpraten,’ had haar moeder gezegd.
onzichtbaar was verwerkt.

Uit: Journey to the End of the Night (Vertaald door Ralph Mannheim)

“Suddenly our street widened, like a crevasse opening out into a bright clearing. Up ahead of us we saw a great pool of sea-green light, wedged between hordes of monstrous buildings. And in the middle of the clearing stood a rather countrified-looking house, surrounded by woebegone lawns.
I asked several people in the crowd what this edifice was, but most of them pretended not to hear me. They couldn’t spare the time. But one young fellow right next to me was kind enough to tell me it was City Hall, adding that it was an ancient monument dating back to colonial times, ever so historical… so they’d left it there… The fringes of this oasis formed a kind of park with benches, where you could sit comfortably enough and look at the building. When I got there, there was hardly anything else to see.
I waited more than an hour in the same place, and then toward noon, from the half-light, from the shuffling, discontinuous, dismal crowd, there erupted a sudden avalanche of absolutely and undeniably beautiful women.
What a discovery! What an America! What ecstasy! I thought of Lola… Her promises had not deceived me! It was true.
I had come to the heart of my pilgrimage. And if my appetite hadn’t kept calling itself to my attention, that would have struck me as one of those moments of supernatural aesthetic revelation. If I’d been a little more comfortable and confident, the incessant beauties I was discovering might have ravished me from my base human condition. In short, all I needed was a sandwich to make me believe in miracles. But how I needed that sandwich!
And yet, what supple grace! What incredible delicacy of form and feature! What inspired harmonies! What perilous nuances! Triumphant where the danger is greatest! Every conceivable promise of face and figure fulfilled! Those blondes! Those brunettes! Those Titian redheads! And more and more kept coming! Maybe, I thought, this is Greece starting all over again. Looks like I got here just in time.
What made those apparitions all the more divine in my eyes was that they seemed totally unaware of my existence as I sat on a bench close by, slap-happy, drooling with erotico-mystical admiration and quinine, but also, I have to admit, with hunger. If it were possible for a man to jump out of his skin, I’d have done it then, once and for all. There was nothing to hold me back.
Those unlikely midinettes could have wafted me away, sublimated me; a gesture, a word would have sufficed, and in that moment I’d have been transported, all of me, into the world of dreams. But I suppose they had other fish to fry.”

„20. Juni 1981

“Prolly
want a crackeer.” Woke tired and took the 7:44. The river blanketed
with a mist. The voices overheard. “Well, then she boiled it and then
she broiled it.” He raised his face and drew over it a beatific look as
if he were tasting last night’s dinner again. “Well, we’ve got one of
those electric rotisseries.” “Oh, New York’s nothing like Chicago;
nothing like it.” On Twenty-third Street I read a sign: “DON’T LOSE YOURLOVED ONE BECAUSE OF UGLY FAT.” There was a window full of crucifixes
made out of plastic. The surface of the city is paradoxical. For a mind
cast in paradox it is reassuring to find this surface. Thinking again,
in the dentist’s chair, that I am like a prisoner who is trying to
escape from jail by the wrong route. For all one knows, that door may
stand open, although I continue to dig a tunnel with a teaspoon. Oh, I
think, if I could only taste a little success. But don’t I approach it
by deepening the pit in which I stand? Mary in the morning, asleep,
looking like the girl I fell in love with. Her round arms lie outside
the covers. Her brown hair is loose. The abiding quality of seriousness
and pureness. In the dark hour you cannot call on goods and chattels to
save you, or old ski trails or the paths to streams. You must find
something greater. And the mind in which the forces of contumely and
destruction seem greater than the forces of creativity. Creativity is
there, but it seems, in relation to the forces of destruction, like the
nipple on a balloon. So, made up of so much destruction and with such a
slender knowledge of love he appears poorly as a husband, son, and
lover—masked in a rag of a smile and a striped tie and a few faint
observations. Oh so deeply rooted in this mind are the needs and the
habits of prayer. Having triumphantly separated himself from the
foolishness of religion, he goes by the church—he hears the bells in the
morning—in the churlish and unhappy frame of mind of a man who has been
excommunicated. He feels the lash of expulsion. And oh this poor mind,
casting desperately around a room for some detail that will give it form
and meaning, seizes always on an ashtray heaped with butts or a crooked
stocking, a tear in the rug. And then he sees the sky! the poignant
blue, the line of darkness rising like a lid; the perfect clearness of
line and color that means that a northwest wind has scoured the overcast
and blown it out to sea. So his mind wanders between the ashtray and
the twilight while most of the known world lies somewhere in between. He
worries, he worries about his mustache, his old navy raincoat, his
weight, his hair, his teeth, the stiffness in his left knee, and if his
anxiety ever transcends this it is to worry about a nation of paltry
men, conceived in his image and likeness—or, if he is a world
federalist, to worry about a world. Why has the sweetness gone? It would
all come back with a new car or a bonus or a little of the recognition
that he deserves for his hard work.”

Uit:Where Three Roads Meet

“Not to mention what one learned from him in the classroom, as one’s junior instructor in Literature & Philosophy I & II, about Homer and Virgil (and Sappho and Petronius and Catullus), Plato and Aristotle (and the Gnostics and the Kabbalists), Dante and Chaucer and Boccaccio (and Scheherazade and Somadeva, Poggio and Aretino and Rabelais), and other classics on (and off) one’s freshman/sophomore syllabus, up to and including James Joyce’s Ulysses (and Finnegans Wake) …
“And trivia, class, as you may have heard, comes from Latin trivium: literally, a place where three roads intersect-as in Sophocles?-but by extension any public square where people swap idle gossip.” The Trivium was also (he went on) the medieval division of the seven liberal arts into Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric-not to be confused with Cambridge University’s tripos, which was a different story altogether: “Okay?”
If you say so, Teach. And so indeed Al said, back then back there, in class and out-all which curricular and extracurricular input Will Chase eagerly “downloaded,” as one might put it three decades later, his own background having been a different story indeed from Alfred Baumann’s: Depression-era child of minimally schooled though by no means unintelligent small-town storekeepers in the state’s least affluent county; graduate of a wartime local public school system so strapped for funds and faculty that its eleventh grade was perforce one’s senior year, whence nearly none of the seventeen-year-old diplomates “went off” to college- especially if they’d been lucky enough to escape military service and thus unlucky enough to have no GI Bill to subsidize a higher education that, as a group, they weren’t competitive for admission to anyhow. A few of the girls managed nursing school, secretarial school, or the nearby teachers college; most became store clerks, telephone operators, beauticians, or/and young housewives and mothers. Most of the boys found jobs in local offices and retail stores or became tradesmen, farmers, or crab-and-oyster watermen like their dads before them. A few enlisted in the peacetime military.
And a handful shrug-shoulderedly took the application exam one spring afternoon for “senatorial” scholarships (whereof every Annapolis legislator was allotted a few to award and then to renew or redistribute annually) to various colleges and universities in the Old Line State. Having so done, the applicants proceeded to their summer employment fully expecting that at season’s end it would become their real employment: their life’s work.
Which, however, in Will Chase’s case and that of a few others in his (all-white) graduating class, it did not. Since junior high school-or “upper elementary,” as sixth and seventh grades were called in that abbreviated system-the lad had made an avid, if noisy, hobby of jazz percussion, and with comparably amateur-but-dedicated classmates on piano, trombone, and alto saxophone had formed a combo to play weekend dances at the local yacht and country club.”

„BYRON: Was hast du denn, Göß.
AUGUSTA: Von all dem lieber nichts.
BYRON: Paolina Borghese.
AUGUSTA: Kein schlechter Geschmack!
AUGUSTA: Eine alberne Geschichte.
BYRON: Erzähle.
AUGUSTA: Sie ist ziemlich unanständig.“

“At first there was nothing on my desk. Under the table were empty drawers and in the ceiling a hole, where, as it later turned out, a chandelier would be fitted.
“Bring me a lamp!” I shouted to the lobby. A lamp was brought. This happened some time ago.
Everything is ready and everything has been planned. And most importantly: everything has been done. I do not have to do anything. The system functions by itself. I just watch and enjoy. Astonishing, I should say, how much I like this. The last thing I hung on the wall was a picture of David Allmighty. Precisely above my desk. I know there is something similar about the two of us. I know that this something stands out. If I had a son, I would put a picture of him there, too. Yes: me, my son and David Allmighty. That would be fun. Regrettably I do not have a son. Here and now. Moreover, there is really no particular need for David Allmighty, but some clients can more easily accept the thought that someone grand and distant creates certain solutions, which they are offered. Many of the moves I have made are ascribed to David Allmighty. But let the people talk.
Now there is only the naming left. I cannot be bothered with that. I will let him name. But before he starts to name, there is one more thing.
He will ask at any moment.
*
“Who else will be in my cabinet?” I ask at last. Everything has been unpacked, everything has been done, but he still hasn’t told me. Well, I shouldn’t stay here alone! He keeps repeating that creative work is a dialogue. Why should I be talking to myself then?
“Sleep, sleep well tonight, because you will have a companion tomorrow,” he grins and scratches his gold Rolex. “

Uit: The Grand Babylon Hotel

“Jules, the celebrated head waiter of the Grand Babylon, was bending formally towards the alert, middle-aged man who had just entered the smoking-room and dropped into a basket-chair in the corner by the conservatory. It was 7.45 on a particularly sultry June night, and dinner was about to be served at the Grand Babylon. Men of all sizes, ages, and nationalities, but every one alike arrayed in faultless evening dress, were dotted about the large, dim apartment. A faint odour of flowers came from the conservatory, and the tinkle of a fountain. The waiters, commanded by Jules, moved softly across the thick Oriental rugs, balancing their trays with the dexterity of jugglers, and receiving and executing orders with that air of profound importance of which only really first-class waiters have the secret. The atmosphere was an atmosphere of serenity and repose, characteristic of the Grand Babylon. It seemed impossible that anything could occur to mar the peaceful, aristocratic monotony of existence in that perfectly-managed establishment. Yet on that night was to happen the mightiest upheaval that the Grand Babylon had ever known.
‘Yes, sir?’ repeated Jules, and this time there was a shade of august disapproval in his voice: it was not usual for him to have to address a customer twice.
‘Oh!’ said the alert, middle-aged man, looking up at length. Beautifully ignorant of the identity of the great Jules, he allowed his grey eyes to twinkle as he caught sight of the expression on the waiter’s face.
‘Bring me an Angel Kiss.’
‘Pardon, sir?’
‘Bring me an Angel Kiss, and be good enough to lose no time.’
‘If it’s an American drink, I fear we don’t keep it, sir.’ The voice of Jules fell icily distinct, and several men glanced round uneasily, as if to deprecate the slightest disturbance of their calm. The appearance of the person to whom Jules was speaking, however, reassured them somewhat, for he had all the look of that expert, the travelled Englishman, who can differentiate between one hotel and another by instinct, and who knows at once where he may make a fuss with propriety, and where it is advisable to behave exactly as at the club. The Grand Babylon was a hotel in whose smoking-room one behaved as though one was at one’s club.”

Mai

Der Flieder am Tor
dringt rötlich hervor,
das himmlische Blau
erduftet im Tau.
Noch blendets vom Blühn,
schon rieselt es grün
und flimmert und bebt,
von Licht überschwebt.
O seliger Mai
und morgen vorbei:
ein trunkener Zug,
ein blitzender Flug!

Entführung

Wenn die leichte Kerzenflamme
Schwelend sich gespenstisch hebt,
Die am runden, weißen Stamme
Zuckend wie gefangen klebt,

Und ein Hauch im düstern Zimmer
Unbemerkt sie plötzlich treibt,
Daß ihr flüchtig blasser Schimmer
Schattend einen Kreis beschreibt:

Fühlst du dich im tiefsten Kerne
Wie von einem Ruf berührt,
Der dich in die große Ferne,
In die Ewigkeit entführt,

Fühlst dich über diesem Leben
Körperfrei im Wirbelwind
Lautlos zu den Quellen schweben,
Daraus die Zeit ins Dunkel rinnt.

„I did not ask him anything further and told him only that I would wait for him. He took off the bags that had been hanging on his saddle, put them away out of sight in the burned corner of the cabin, looked over the stirrups and bridle and, as he finished saddling, smiled and said:
“I am ready. I’m going to awake my ‘comrades.’” Half an hour after the morning drink of tea, my three guests took their leave. I remained out of doors and was engaged in splitting wood for my stove. Suddenly, from a distance, rifle shots rang through the woods, first one, then a second. Afterwards all was still. From the place near the shots a frightened covey of blackcock broke and came over me. At the top of a high pine a jay cried out. I listened for a long time to see if anyone was approaching my hut but everything was still.
On the lower Yenisei it grows dark very early. I built a fire in my stove and began to cook my soup, constantly listening for every noise that came from beyond the cabin walls. Certainly I understood at all times very clearly that death was ever beside me and might claim me by means of either man, beast, cold, accident or disease. I knew that nobody was near me to assist and that all my help was in the hands of God, in the power of my hands and feet, in the accuracy of my aim and in my presence of mind. However, I listened in vain. I did not notice the return of my stranger. Like yesterday he appeared all at once on the threshold. Through the steam I made out his laughing eyes and his fine face. He stepped into the hut and dropped with a good deal of noise three rifles into the corner.
“Two horses, two rifles, two saddles, two boxes of dry bread, half a brick of tea, a small bag of salt, fifty cartridges, two overcoats, two pairs of boots,” laughingly he counted out. “In truth today I had a very successful hunt.”
In astonishment I looked at him.
“What are you surprised at?” he laughed. “Komu nujny eti tovarischi? Who’s got any use for these fellows? Let us have tea and go to sleep. Tomorrow I will guide you to another safer place and then go on.”

Kein unbequemer Freund, kein Trunkenbold, kein Fresser,

sei immer dir mein Dank erhalten!
Auch dir sei Gottes Erde leicht!

Uit: The Hope

“Ha’m’faked!” No response. “Ha’m’faked! Ha’m’fakedr’ (“Commander! Commander!”) The watch sergeant roughly shakes the company commander’s shoulder. Haganah captain Zev Barak, born Wolfgang Berkowitz, rolls over and half opens heavy eyes. “What now?” “Sir, they’re coming again.” Barak sits up and glances at his watch. L’Azazel! Asleep a mere ten minutes, how can he have dreamed such a long crazy dream, himself and his Moroccan wife Nakhama in the Vienna of his boyhood, rowing on a lake, riding a Ferris wheel, eating pastry in a Ringstrasse café? Around him on the ground the militiamen sprawl asleep. Beyond the sandbags and the earthworks rifle-toting lookouts pace the hilltop, peering down at the narrow moonlit highway from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which here goes snaking through the mountain pass. Wearily, Zev Barak gets to his feet in a cold night wind. Unshaven, grimy, in a shabby uniform with no insignia of rank, the captain at twenty-four looks barely older than his troops. He follows the sergeant to an outcropping of rock amid scrubby trees, where the sentry, a scrawny boy in a Palmakh wool cap, points down at the road. Barak edges out on the rocks and looks through binoculars at the moving shadows. “All right,” he says, sick at heart, to the sergeant. “Go ahead and wake the men.” Within minutes they stand in a semicircle around him, some thirty tousle-headed youths, many of them bearded, yawning and rubbing their eyes. “It’s a pretty big gang this time, maybe a hundred or so,” he says in a matter-of-fact voice, though he feels that in this fight against odds, after months of close calls, he may really be about to die. He has been hearing that anxious inner voice more than once lately. Here he is still alive, just very worn out and scared, and he must keep up the spirits of these weary hard-pressed youngsters. “But we have plenty of ammunition, and we’ve beaten them off before. This hill is the key to Kastel, so let’s hold our ground, no matter what! Understood? Then prepare for action.” In minutes, Barak’s troops, armed and helmeted, surround him once more. No more yawns now; grim youthful faces under variegated headgear, from World War I tin hats to British and German steel casques, and also some ragged wool caps. “Soldiers, you’re a fine unit. You’ve proven yourselves. Fight the way you did before, and you’ll repulse them again. Remember, the Russians had a motto, ‘If you have to go, take ten Germans with you.’ So if any of us have to go, let’s each take twenty of them with us! We’ve got the high ground, and we’re fighting for our lives, our homes, and the future of the Jewish people.”

“No, I haven’t. I wrote her that I would go to the St. Mark, and I begged her to come and let me talk to her even if she didn’t intend to go home with me. But she didn’t come. I waited three days, and she didn’t come, didn’t even send me a message of any sort.”
Spade nodded his blond satan’s head, frowned sympathetically, and tightened his lips together.
“It was horrible,” Miss Wonderly said, trying to smile. “I couldn’t sit there like that–waiting–not knowing what had happened to her, what might be happening to her.” She stopped trying to smile. She shuddered. “The only address I had was General Delivery. I wrote her another letter, and yesterday afternoon I went to the Post Office. I stayed there until after dark, but I didn’t see her. I went there again this morning, and still didn’t see Corinne, but I saw Floyd Thursby.”
Spade nodded again. His frown went away. In its place came a look of sharp attentiveness.
“He wouldn’t tell me where Corinne was,” she went on, hope-lessly. “He wouldn’t tell me anything, except that she was well and happy. But how can I believe that? That is what he would tell me anyhow, isn’t it?”
“Sure,” Spade agreed. “But it might be true.”
“I hope it is. I do hope it is,” she exclaimed. “But I can’t go back home like this, without having seen her, without even having talked to her on the phone. He wouldn’t take me to her. He said she didn’t want to see me. I can’t believe that. He promised to tell her he had seen me, and to bring her to see me–if she would come–this evening at the hotel. He said he knew she wouldn’t. He promised to come himself if she wouldn’t. He–“
She broke off with a startled hand to her mouth as the door opened.
The man who had opened the door came in a step, said, “Oh, excuse me!” hastily took his brown hat from his head, and backed out.
“It’s all right, Miles,” Spade told him. “Come in. Miss Wonderly, this is Mr. Archer, my partner.
Miles Archer came into the office again, shutting the door behind him, ducking his head and smiling at Miss Wonderly, making a vaguely polite gesture with the hat in his hand. He was of medium height, solidly built, wide in the shoulders, thick in the neck, with a jovial heavy-jawed red face and some grey in his close-trimmed hair. He was apparently as many years past forty as Spade was past thirty”.

Was mir denn einfalle!

Uit: The boldest way

The boldest way, if not the best,
to tell men freely of their foulest faults,
to laugh at their vain deeds and vainer thoughts.

Uit: The Caine Mutiny

“Mr. Keefer,” said the judge advocate, “at any time prior to 18 December were you informed that Maryk suspected Queeg of being mentally ill?”

“Yes.”

“Describe how you learned this fact.”

“At Ulithi, about two weeks before the typhoon, Maryk showed me a medical log he’d kept on Queeg’s behavior. He asked me to come with him to the New Jersey to report the situation to Admiral Halsey.”

“What was your reaction to the medical log?”

“I was dumfounded to learn that Maryk had kept it.”

“Did you consent to go with him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Well, I was stunned. And I–that is, he was my superior officer and also my close friend. I didn’t consider refusing.

“Did you believe that the log justified the relief of Queeg?”

“No. when we arrived aboard the New, Jersey, I told him as forcibly as I could that in my opinion the log would not justify the action, and that both of us would be liable to a charge of combining, to make a mutiny.”

“What was his response?”

“He followed my advice. We returned to the Caine and no further reference was made by either of us to the log or to Queeg’s mental condition.”

“Did you inform the captain of Maryk’s log?”

“I did not.”

“Why not?”

“It would have been disloyal and contrary to the best interests of the ship to stir up my captain against my executive officer. Maryk had evidently abandoned his intention to pursue the matter. I considered the matter closed.”

„–”How is your horrid country?”

–”You can look all over the world but you won’t find neighbors as kind and thoughtful as the people in Bullet Park.”

–He possesses for a moment the curious power of being able to frighten himself.

–”Oh, I wish it would never get dark—never. I suppose you know all about that lady who was mistreated and strangled on Maple Street last month. She was my age and we had the same first name. We had the same horoscope and they never found the murderer…”

–I heard her swear and a moment later I heard the noise of falling glass, and why is this sound so portentous, so like a doomcrack bell?

–He turned on a light and saw how absorbed his son was in the lisping clown.

—society had become so automative and nomadic that nomadic signals or means of communication had been established by the means of headlights, parking lights, signal lights and windshield wipers. Hang the child murderer. (Headlights.) Reduce the state income tax. (Parking lights.) Abolish the secret police. (Emergency signal.) The bishop had suggested that churchgoers turn on their windshield wipers to communicate their faith in the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

–The place had long ago gone to seed and had then been abandoned. The water traps were dry, the windmill had lost its sails and the greens were bare concrete but most of the obstacles were intact and on summer nights men and boys still played the course although there were no trespassing signs all over the place.

–”I was feeling good too but we have a problem here and we can’t evade it just because the veal birds smell good.”

–The man explained that he was after draft evaders because he had spent a year and a half in a POW camp in Germany, eating rats and mice. He wanted the younger generation to learn what it was all about.“

„I was leaning against the bar in a speakeasy on Fifty-second Street, waiting for Nora to finish her Christmas shopping, when a girl got up from the table where she had been sitting with three other people and came over to me. She was small and blonde, and whether you looked at her face or at her body in powder-blue sports clothes, the result was satisfactory. “Aren’t you Nick Charles?” she asked.

I said: “Yes.”

She held out her hand. “I’m Dorothy Wynant. You don’t remember me, but you ought to remember my father, Clyde Wynant. You–”

“Sure,” I said, “and I remember you now, but you were only a kid of eleven or twelve then, weren’t you?”

“Yes, that was eight years ago. Listen: remember those stories you told me? Were they true?”

“Probably not. How is your father?”

She laughed. “I was going to ask you. Mamma divorced him, you know, and we never hear from him–except when he gets in the newspapers now and then with some of his carryings on. Don’t you ever see him?”

My glass was empty. I asked her what she would have to drink, she said Scotch and soda. I ordered two of them and said: “No, I’ve been living in San Francisco.”

She said slowly: “I’d like to see him. Mamma would raise hell if she found it out, but I’d like to see him.”

“Well?”

“He’s not where we used to live, on Riverside Drive, and he’s not in the phone book or city directory.”

Uit: The Price Of Love

“THE dramatic moment of the birthday feast came A nearly at the end of the meal when Mrs. Mal- don, having in mysterious silence disappeared for a space to the room behind, returned with due pomp bearing a parcel in her dignified hands. During her brief absence Louis, Rachel, and Julian—hero of the night—had sat mute and somewhat constrained round the debris of the birthday pudding. The constraint was no doubt due partly to Julian’s characteristic and notorious grim temper, and partly to mere anticipation of a solemn event. Julian Maldon in particular was self-conscious. He hated intensely to be self-conscious, and his feeling towards every witness of his self-consciousness partook always of the homicidal. Were it not that civilization has the means to protect itself, Julian might have murdered defenseless aged ladies and innocent young girls for the simple offense of having seen him blush. He was a perfect specimen of a throw-back to original ancestry. He had been born in London, of an American mother, and had spent the greater part of his life in London. Yet London and his motherseemed to count for absolutely nothing at all in his composition. At the age of seventeen his soul, quitting the exile of London, had come to the Five Towns with a sigh of relief as if at the assuagement of a long nostalgia, and had dropped into the district as into a socket. In three months he was more indigenous than a native. Any experienced observer who now chanced at a week-end to see him board the Manchester express at Euston would have been able to predict from his appearance that he would leave the train at Knype. He was an undersized man, with a combative and suspicious face. He regarded the world with crafty pugnacity from beneath frowning eyebrows.“

„”Stop!” whispered my old Mongol guide, as we were one day crossing the plain near Tzagan Luk. “Stop!”

He slipped from his camel which lay down without his bidding. The Mongol raised his hands in prayer before his face and began to repeat the sacred phrase: “Om! Mani padme Hung!” The other Mongols immediately stopped their camels and began to pray.

“What has happened?” I thought, as I gazed round over the tender green grass, up to the cloudless sky and out toward the dreamy soft rays of the evening sun.

The Mongols prayed for some time, whispered among themselves and, after tightening up the packs on the camels, moved on.

“Did you see,” asked the Mongol, “how our camels moved their ears in fear? How the herd of horses on the plain stood fixed in attention and how the herds of sheep and cattle lay crouched close to the ground? Did you notice that the birds did not fly, the marmots did not run and the dogs did not bark? The air trembled softly and bore from afar the music of a song which penetrated to the hearts of men, animals and birds alike. Earth and sky ceased breathing. The wind did not blow and the sun did not move. At such a moment the wolf that is stealing up on the sheep arrests his stealthy crawl; the frightened herd of antelopes suddenly checks its wild course; the knife of the shepherd cutting the sheep’s throat falls from his hand; the rapacious ermine ceases to stalk the unsuspecting salga. All living beings in fear are involuntarily thrown into prayer and waiting for their fate. So it was just now. Thus it has always been whenever the King of the World in his subterranean palace prays and searches out the destiny of all peoples on the earth.”

„Freund!

Rien a dire.

Today I will call that little repulsive office where my sister works her last days. The office is located in the middle of a ghastly desert, and it can be accessed only through an iron gate or under the controlling eyes of a security guard. What is more, I have noticed that the greater the debasement, the more vigilantly it is being guarded, the stronger is the security.

The buildings within the iron gate are revolting with no shape that would please the eye, there are some cars, and corpses of cars earned with sweat and blood standing in the courtyard. In the apartment next to the office live some architects who, unable to tolerate this depressing atmosphere, spend their energy trying to fight their neigbors smoking. In the next apartment lives an artist who organizes little parties with a little money collection box. Each guest must give a little money to the DJ who plays bad music. And right next to the office is a small room belonging to an unrecognized inventor where he, like a lost 19th-century person, creates the next revolutionary vacuum pump. It is the kind of office where only godforsaken women sadly enjoying their little gruesome joys work now. I also worked there for almost a year, imagine!

Uit: The End of the Road

„One of the things I did not see fit to tell Joe Morgan (for to do so would have been to testify further against myself) is that it was never very much of a chore for me, at various times, to maintain with perfectly equal unenthusiasm contradictory, or at least polarized, opinions at once on a given subject. I did so too easily, perhaps, for my own ultimate mobility. Thus it seemed to me that the Doctor was insane, and that he was profound; that Joe was brilliant and also absurd; that Rennie was strong and weak; and that Jacob Horner–owl, peacock, chameleon, donkey, and popinjay, fugitive from a medieval bestiary–was at the same time giant and dwarf, plenum and vacuum, and admirable and contemptible. Had I explained this to Joe he’d have added it to his store of evidence that I did not exist: my own feeling was that it was and was not such evidence. I explain it now in order to make as clear as I can what I mean when I say that I was shocked and not surprised, disgusted and amused, excited and bored, when, the evening after the conversation just recorded, Rennie came up to my room. I’d had a brilliant day with my students, explaining gerunds, participles, and infinitives, and my eloquence had brought me around to feeling both guilty and nonchalant about the Morgan affair.

“Well, I’ll be damned!” I said when I saw her. “Come on in! Have you been excommunicated, or what?”

“I didn’t want to come up here,” Rennie said tersely. “I didn’t want to see you again at all, Jake.”

“Oh. But people want to do the things they do.”

“Joe drove me in, Jake. He told me to come up here.”

This was intended as a bombshell, I believe, but I was not in an explodable mood.“

Uit: The Maltese Falcon

“Samuel Spade’s jaw was long and bony, his chin a jutting v under the more flexible v of his mouth. His nostrils curved back to make another, smaller, v. His yellow-grey eyes were horizontal. The v motif was picked up again by thickish brows rising outward from twin creases above a hooked nose, and his pale brown hair grew down– from high flat temples–in a point on his forehead. He looked rather pleasantly like a blond satan.

He said to Effie Perine: ‘Yes, sweetheart?”

She was a lanky sunburned girl whose tan dress of thin woolen stuff clung to her with an effect of dampness. Her eyes were brown and playful in a shiny boyish face. She finished shutting the door behind her, leaned against it, and said: “There’s a girl wants to see you. Her name’s Wonderly.”

“A customer?”

“I guess so. You’ll want to see her anyway: she’s a knockout.”

“Shoo her in, darling,” said Spade. “Shoo her in.”

Effie Perine opened the door again, following it back into the outer office, standing with a hand on the knob while saying: “Will you come in, Miss Wonderly?”

A voice said, “Thank you,” so softly that only the purest articulation made the words intelligible, and a young woman came through the doorway. She advanced slowly, with tentative steps, looking at Spade with cobalt-blue eyes that were both shy and probing.”

Andere boeken over de Potteries waren Tales of the Five Towns (1905) en The Grim Smile of the Five Towns (1907).

“Those two girls, Constance and Sophia Baines, paid no heed to the manifold interest of their situation, of which, indeed, they had never been conscious. They were, for example, established almost precisely on the fifty-third parallel of latitude. A little way to the north of them, in the creases of a hill famous for its religious orgies, rose the river Trent, the calm and characteristic stream of middle England. Somewhat further northwards, in the near neighbourhood of the highest public-house in the realm, rose two lesser rivers, the Dane and the Dove, which, quarrelling in early infancy, turned their backs on each other, and, the one by favour of the Weaver and the other by favour of the Trent, watered between them the whole width of England, and poured themselves respectively into the Irish Sea and the German Ocean. What a county of modest, unnoticed rivers! What a natural, simple county, content to fix its boundaries by these tortuous island brooks, with their comfortable names–Trent, Mease, Dove, Tern, Dane, Mees, Stour, Tame, and even hasty Severn!

Not that the Severn is suitable to the county! In the county excess is deprecated. The county is happy in not exciting remark.

It is content that Shropshire should possess that sw
ollen bump, the Wrekin, and that the exaggerated wildness of the Peak should lie over its border. It does not desire to be a pancake like Cheshire. It has everything that England has, including thirty miles of Watling Street; and England can show nothing more beautiful and nothing uglier than the works of nature and the works of man to be seen within the limits of the county.”

“We all have bad days, and Dr. Guy Carpenter awoke to rain drumming on gray windows, with a qualm in his gut about what this drab day might bring. Late at night an e-mail had come in, summoning him to an urgent morning meeting at the Jet Propulsion Lab with no reason given, an ill omen indeed to a survivor of the abort on the Texas plain. He was in pajamas at the desk in his den, gnawing at a slice of Swiss cheese on sourdough bread as he marked up a gloomy cost estimate of new space telescopes, when his wife burst in, her long black hair hanging in wet tangled ringlets, her soaked nightgown clinging transparently to her slim body. “Sweeney got out,” she barked.

“No! How, this time?”

“I took out the trash, that’s how. They collect it Wednesday at seven, or have you forgotten? It’s raining buckets, I hurried, I left the screen door unlatched, and the bastard slipped out. I tried to catch him and got drenched.”

“I’ll find him.”

“Don’t you have that meeting at seven-thirty? I’m wet through and stark naked, as you see, or I’d look for him.”

“No problem. Sorry about the trash.”

Dr. Carpenter threw on a raincoat and plodded out barefoot on slippery grass. The downpour was helpful. Sweeney hated the wet, so he would be holed up in some dry spot of the backyard instead of hightailing it over the fence for a major chase, and if that failed, a general neighborhood alarm. Penny’s obsession for keeping her cat indoors was a given of their marriage. Wonderful wife, Penny, with a human weakness or two such as a slight streak of jealousy and an unarguable dogma that outside cats were short-lived. Sweeney, a resourceful Siamese, ignored her for a doting fool, he knew he would never die, and he lay in wait for any chance to get out.”

“Jim and Irene Westcott were the kind of people who seem to strike that satisfactory average of income, endeavor, and respectability that is reached by the statistical reports in college alumni bulletins. They were the parents of two young children, they had been married nine years, they lived on the twelfth floor of an apartment house near Sutton Place, they went to the theatre on an average of 10.3 times a year, and they hoped someday to live in Westchester. Irene Westcott was a pleasant, rather plain girl with soft brown hair and a wide, fine forehead upon which nothing at all had been written, and in the cold weather she wore a coat of fitch skins dyed to resemble mink. You could not say that Jim Westcott looked younger than he was, but you could at least say of him that he seemed to feel younger. He wore his graying hair cut very short, he dressed in the kind of clothes his class had worn at Andover, and his manner was earnest, vehement, and intentionally naïve. The Westcotts differed from their friends, their classmates, and their neighbors only in an interest they shared in serious music. They went to a great many concerts–although they seldom mentioned this to anyone–and they spent a good deal of time listening to music on the radio.

Their radio was an old instrument, sensitive, unpredictable, and beyond repair. Neither of them understood the mechanics of radio–or of any of the other appliances that surrounded them–and when the instrument faltered, Jim would strike the side of the cabinet with his hand. This sometimes helped. One Sunday afternoon, in the middle of a Schubert quartet, the musicfaded away altogether. Jim struck the cabinet repeatedly, but there was no response; the Schubert was lost to them forever. He promised to buy Irene a new radio, and on Monday when he came home from work he told her that he had got one. He refused to describe it, and said it would be a surprise for her when it came.”

Abend

Weiße Schwäne senken ihre schmalen,

Schlanken Hälse in den schilfdurchragten,

Stillen, grünen Weiher, plätschern leise,

Ziehen weiter ihre stillen Kreise…

An dem Arm des müden, hochbetagten

Schloßherrn, der den schlafgemiednen Qualen

Seiner kalten Nacht entgegenbangt,

Steht in leichten, weißen Spitzen

Die Gemahlin. Spielend langt

In 1921 verscheen zijn eerste boek in het Engels Beasts, Men and Gods.

Uit: Beasts, Men And God

„One morning, when I had gone out to see a friend, I suddenly received the news that twenty Red soldiers had surrounded my house to arrest me and that I must escape. I quickly put on one of my friend’s old hunting suits, took some money and hurried away on foot along the back ways of the town till I struck the open road, where I engaged a peasant, who in four hours had driven me twenty miles from the town and set me down in the midst of a deeply forested region. On the way I bought a rifle, three hundred cartridges, an ax, a knife, a sheepskin overcoat, tea, salt, dry bread and a kettle. I penetrated into the heart of the wood to an abandoned half-burned hut. From this day I became a genuine trapper but I never dreamed that I should follow this role as long as I did. The next morning I went hunting and had the good fortune to kill two heathcock. I found deer tracks in plenty and felt sure that I should not want for food. However, my sojourn in this place was not for long. Five days later when I returned from hunting I noticed smoke curling up out of the chimney of my hut. I stealthily crept along closer to the cabin and discovered two saddled horses with soldiers’ rifles slung to the saddles. Two disarmed men were not dangerous for me with a weapon, so I quickly rushed across the open and entered the hut. From the bench two soldiers started up in fright. They were Bolsheviki. On their big Astrakhan caps I made out the red stars of Bolshevism and on their blouses the dirty red bands. We greeted each other and sat down. The soldiers had already prepared tea and so we drank this ever welcome hot beverage and chatted, suspiciously eyeing one another the while. To disarm this suspicion on their part, I told them that I was a hunter from a distant place and was living there because I found it good country for sables. They announced to me that they were soldiers of a detachment sent from a town into the woods to pursue all suspicious people.“
