Uit: A Man Leaping Into the Future

“In the aeroplane there was still the semblance of an ordered existence. I was flying from Rome to Palermo on a Thursday evening in March – that much was certain. I sat in the window seat I had been assigned, I had watched the stewardess when she indicated where the life jackets were kept and demonstrated how to place the oxygen mask over one’s face, I had used my safety belt when we took off, I did not smoke, since it was forbidden in this section of the plane, I made no unnecessary noises – in short, I submitted completely to the order of air travel. The impression of an ordered existence was strengthened by the appearance and activities of my fellow-travellers. I was surrounded by businessmen in elegantly cut suits, all immaculate. Most of them were working: an expensive attaché case full of papers on their knees, a calculator on the arm of their seat, a fountain pen in their hand. A stewardess walked down the aisle, bending to left and right, and made herself useful by pouring tiny cups of mineral water – a sobriety that seemed appropriate to this cool world of calculating brains, calculators and controlled lust.
I drank mineral water and leafed through my travel guide, I looked at the sea which lay glittering in blue and gold tints after the setting of the sun, and slowly but surely became full of anxious presentiments, because if I try to be a model passenger, if I keep eagerly to every rule, if I have the urge to pluck imaginary bits of fluff from my jacket, madness is lying in wait for me.”

Uit: The Bill from My Father

“He leaned close. “Let me ask you something.”

I wanted to be as frank as possible. If there was a medical ordeal ahead, maybe we’d have a last chance at attachment. I looked into his eyes. “Ask me anything you want.”

“Why…,” he said, then hesitated.

“Go on.” I urged him.

“Why are you reading the Ladies’ Home Journal?”

“What?”

“Why did you pick that magazine out of all the magazines in the waiting room? There must be I don’t know how many others to chose from and you picked that.”

The March issue had been lying on my lap, opened to a double-page photo of the creamiest seafood bisque I’ve ever seen, a kind of culinary centerfold. I thought I’d cook it for Brian and was about to rip out the recipe. Even in a time of crisis, Dad found a way to goad me like a pro. “Nobody here cares if I’m reading a men’s magazine or a women’s magazine!” I glanced around the waiting room to see if I could spot a man reading Today’s Bride or a woman reading Popular Mechanics, but where is proof when you really need it? “Ideas about masculinity and femininity are different now than they were in your day.” I thought back to the hot afternoon I’d been cinched into my father’s jumpsuit, drunk on rum punch and basted in my own perspiration, staggering through a backyard filled with dykes disguised as housewives who were really machines. “People today are more…flexible.”

“I’ll bet,” he said.

The man in the wheelchair wasn’t even pretending not to listen. His eyes met mine and glistened with interest. His posture improved.

I said, “You were trying to change the subject is what you were trying to do. Then we wouldn’t have to talk about why you’re here. Well, it’s not going to work.” But it had, of course, worked like a charm. Conversation between us ceased. We folded our arms and glowered straight ahead.

“Dad,” I said, “I hate that one of us always has to be right.”

“I’m not the one who always has to be right. You are.”

[…]

LXIV

another bird, that flew upward, in the Forum Romanum
up toward the Rostra Maybe a serin, but
I don’t know Flowers were in bloom, flowers I don’t recognize
What may have been acanthus, growing like lupins
And a red flower, close to the ground White butterflies
At the house of the Vestals roses bloomed Up above
the palace and the ruins of villas a falcon flew
Sudden silence of birds At what sort of rostrum do what sorts
of speakers appear I listen to the voices of Europe
I feel no confidence; not even in my own distrust
STEER! We all carry the sparkling diamond oar
Hard; like the gates of Hades Shadows full of unrest
The Curia, restored in the ’30s, in the face of new imperial power
Which senate meets there; which tribunes of the people, if they would now
have audience, even in Hades We move through the centuries
Faced with destitution’s images The blood of the martyrs is clasped, cradled
As if Agave were clutching the head of Pentheus; the blood runs
down into a bowl; a grail The Etruscan votive sculptures
are thin as sticks; are by Giacometti What do the dead
see? What do they see that even the dying do not see? What
Hesperian fruits, shining Pomegranates; golden fruits?
By the Baths of Diocletian are orange trees Hidden
inside there, Michelangelo’s basilica, is full
of power, stone-dead, of the living Small flames burn for believers
Policemen stand in groups, some with bulletproof vests, submachine guns
The door to a bordello stands open Private health clubs
with sauna, massage At Stazione Termini are all kinds of people;
from all over the planet Everything stands wide open, glowing poverty
A beggar woman, emaciated, a shawl over her head, a half-
grown child in her arms, also sleeping, does not wake when you give
her money Which ones listen Which hear the invisible voice The one
with no platform, no altar, who is not even heard at the sacrificial spring in the under-
world, welling up from the rock; clear green water You want
to touch the water, but I stop you Maybe it is also
polluted? We go to the Colosseum, sit there together
on a marble bench, the fragment of one, behold the endless stream
of tourists Shadows in the planetary Hades; we among them
On the Palatine there’s a wedding; we talk to the cats a while Look at
more flowers, butterflies One wholly ordinary sparrow, but a little different
In our hotel room afterwards we make love; fiercely, with great intensity.

Mysterie

Soms luister ik lang naar het zwijgen
Van die donkre viool, mijn hart,
En scheemring na schemering zijgen
Door een stilte die sluimert en mart.

Doch eindlijk begint het te trillen,
Of een zucht langs de snaren streelt,
Of een enkel met liedren te stillen
Verlangen er droomt vóór het speelt.

En een mijmring van tonen zingt éven
Uit de stilte, als de huivrende geest
Eener geur die schaduws deed beven…
Maar mijn ziel is vervúld geweest.

En hetgeen in haar duister blijft hangen,
Een levende smart schoon ze zwijgt,
Is de snik van een eindloos verlangen
Uit een droefheid die woordenloos hijgt.

Verzegelde fontein

Groen-omlommerd, wit-betegeld,
Springfontein, nog immer zwijgt gij?
Stil-bekommerd, dicht-verzegeld,
Ziel in ’t donker, woordeloos, híjgt gij?

Zie de purperen bloemtros bengelen
In ’t geblaarte. Hóor de lente,
Zoet als ’t lief in Kedars tente,
Loof- en vogelstemmen mengelen.

Moet uw hof nog langer wachten?
Breek het zegel voor de noen:
Stort de pijn der donkere nachten
In de drift van ’t lustseizoen.

A Somewhat Absent Minded Attempt to Be Politically Correct

Someone I don’t know that well

tells me they have a little boy.

“Oh yes,” I enquire, “and how old is he or she?”

Bonfire Night

the doors open

everyone comes out

everyone is ready

for fireworks

all except the dog

Eddie

he is shut up in the sheddie

even out of doors we have indoor fireworks

Dad says it is better to be safe than dead

the air is full of the smell of next doors fireworks

Mum says they are very good this year

this year Christopher is allowed

to help his dad to light the fireworks

he is very excited

he is very proud

he is twenty-eight

Uit: The Walls Are Cold (The Complete Stories of Truman Capote)

Really, isn’t that charming? I mean the coincidence.” She smoothed her hair and smiled with her too dark lips.

They went into the den and she knew the sailor was watching the way her dress swung around her hips. She stooped through the door behind the bar.

“Well,” she said, “what will it be? I forgot, we have scotch and rye and rum; how about a nice rum and coke?”

“If you say so,” he grinned, sliding his hand along the mirrored bar’s surface, “you know, I never saw a place like this before. It’s something right out of a movie.”

She whirled ice swiftly around in a glass with a swizzle stick. “I’ll take you on a forty-cent tour if you like. It’s quite large, for an apartment, that is. We have a country house that’s much, much bigger.”

That didn’t sound right. It was too supercilious. She turned and put the bottle of rum back in its niche. She could see in the mirror that he was staring at her, perhaps through her.

“How old are you?” he asked.

She had to think for a minute, really think. She lied so constantly about her age she sometimes forgot the truth herself. What difference did it make whether he knew her real age or not? So she told him.

“Sixteen.”

“And never been kissed. .. ?”

She laughed, not at the cliché but her answer.

“Raped, you mean.”

She was facing him and saw that he was shocked and then amused and then something else.

“Oh, for God’s sake, don’t look at me that way, I’m not a bad girl.” He blushed and she climbed back through the door and took his hand. “Come on, I’ll show you around.”

She led him down a long corridor intermittently lined with mirrors, and showed him room after room. He admired the soft, pastel rugs and the smooth blend of modernistic with period furniture.

“This is my room,” she said, holding the door open for him, “you mustn’t mind the mess, it isn’t all mine, most of the girls have been fixing in here.”

There was nothing for him to mind, the room was in perfect order. The bed, the tables, the lamp were all white but the walls and the rug were a dark, cold green.

“Well, Jake. .. what do you think, suit me?”

“I never saw anything like it, my sister wouldn’t believe me if I told her. .. but I don’t like the walls, if you’ll pardon me for saying so. .. that green. .. they look so cold.”

She looked puzzled and not knowing quite why, she reached out her hand and touched the wall beside her dressing-table.“

Uit: And the Sea is Never Full

Why death, Primo? To tell us what truth about whose 1ife?
Did he want to reach to the very end of his thoughts, his memories? Truly enter death? I don’t remember why, but I called him shortly before his death. A premonition? His voice sounded thick, heavy. “Things are not good,” he said slowly, “not good at all.” “What’s not good, Primo?” “Oh, the world, the world’s no good.” And he doesn’t know what he is doing in a world that’s going so badly. “Are you having problems, Primo?” No, he has no problems. In Italy and elsewhere he is read, admired, honored, but it’s going badly. We speak of mutual friends, of his plans, of his son, Renzo. I suggest he come to New York, spend some time with me. He doesn’t say no, he doesn’t say yes; he doesn’t answer, as though he were already elsewhere, behind other walls. To cheer him up I describe to him the success of his works on American campuses. No reaction. “Are you there, Primo? Do you hear me?” Yes, he hears me–but he’s no longer there.

An American novelist publishes an article that shocks quite a few of us. He says that Primo’s friends should have urged him to get treatment, and that a good therapist could have cured him. This is a typical banalization: Here we have existential evil, the lifelong incandescent wound of a soul, reduced to a nervous breakdown common among writers whose inspiration becomes blocked, or among men of a certain age.
