Parabel

in handschoen haar bedekken,

Stilleven

Twee harten op een schotel
met glimlichten van droefenis,
een aarden kruik waaruit
de geest staat te verwaaien,
wat klein rood fruit
dat deze noen gevallen is
maar nooit de grond bereikte –

en de tuinier was daarbij als fazant
verbeeld, het schot hoog aan de hals;

Ze negeert me.
Of haar duim.

Comment peut-on mourir ?

Most Like An Arch This Marriage

Most like an arch—an entrance which upholds
and shores the stone-crush up the air like lace.
Mass made idea, and idea held in place.
A lock in time. Inside half-heaven unfolds.

Most like an arch—two weaknesses that lean
into a strength. Two fallings become firm.
Two joined abeyances become a term
naming the fact that teaches fact to mean.

Not quite that? Not much less. World as it is,
what’s strong and separate falters. All I do
at piling stone on stone apart from you
is roofless around nothing. Till we kiss

I am no more than upright and unset.
It is by falling in and in we make
the all-bearing point, for one another’s sake,
in faultless failing, raised by our own weight.

The Catalpa

The catalpa’s white week is ending there
in its corner of my yard. It has its arms full
of its own flowering now, but the least air
spills off a petal and a breeze lets fall
whole coronations. There is not much more
of what this is. Is every gladness quick?
That tree’s a nuisance, really. Long before
the summer’s out, its beans, long as a stick,
will start to shed. And every year one limb
cracks without falling off and hangs there dead
till I get up and risk my neck to trim
what it knows how to lose but not to shed.
I keep it only for this one white pass.
The end of June’s its garden; July, its Fall;
all else, the world remembering what it was
in the seven days of its visible miracle.

What should I keep if averages were all?

Uit: A Gathering of Ravens

“No place where your Nailed God is welcome,” Grimnir said. “So watch your tongue, little fool.”
Étaín nodded, her eyes wide with fear.
Grimnir led them to the water’s edge, to where someone had drawn a slender punt up on shore. Étaín looked dubiously at the flat-bottomed boat. It seemed as old as the forest, its boards black and shiny with use and decay. A pole lay next to it.
“Get in,” Grimnir said.
“We shouldn’t be here,” Étaín replied, backing away from the water. “This place is… wrong. It’s evil. I can feel it.”
“Evil, eh? What do you know about evil? Get in the boat. We’re close, now.”
Étaín shook her head, her trembling hands clasped before her. Something inimical to her lived among these trees, something unnatural whose hatred and malevolence warped the bosom of the earth itself. That island…
“Get in the gods-be-damned boat, little fool!” roared Grimnir. The echo of his voice profaned the silence. Boughs rustled on a phantom wind; Étaín imagined she could hear spectral laughter, as though whatever dwelled here took great pleasure in her terror. She backpedaled. She was on the verge of fleeing from this cursed grove when Grimnir sprang.
Étaín screamed. She had the impression of lips skinning back from yellowed fangs and eyes blazing like coals an instant before his fist hammered into the side of her jaw and sent her sprawling into oblivion.”
Étaín woke by a fire — a great, roaring blaze that filled the glade with warmth and light. She lay with her back against a fallen log, her hands bound behind her. A dull ache radiated from her bruised jaw. Her ears rang, yet. She blinked, looked around, and tried to remember how she’d gotten here — wherever here was.
What she’d taken for a glade was actually a bight in the living palisade of trees that girt the small island, a grassy cove dominated by a stone-curbed fire pit. It was fully dark, now, but Étaín could still see the black lake beyond, its surface gleaming like a sheet of dark ice. It was snowing; fat flakes hissed and died in the crackling flames rising from the pit.”

Brief

Het grotestadskind schrijvend
aan haar grootvader, zegt niet:

men noemt mij mager,
een klein kreng waar straks
madelieven in een kring
omheen zullen staan -, maar:

’t is erger met mijn pop
sinds u daarbuiten woont.

ach, nu is zij moegeschreven
aan grootvader – de enveloppe
omsluit haar liefderijk,
een pop onder een lila deken.

Rococo

Gracielijk en licht sterven,
een kleine zucht in de paniers
en ’t is niet meer.

dien avond heeft men ons
gekleed te bed gelegd,
als in een rose medaillon
voor iedereen te kijk –

en o bepoederde horreur,
het clavecimbel speelt door.

Uit: Before the End (Vertaald door Marina Harss))

« Beneath his harshness, my father hid a more vulnerable side, a candid and generous heart. He had an amazing esthetic sense, and when the family moved to La Plata, he designed our house. Late in life, I became aware of his passion for plants, which he cared for with a tenderness that I had not seen before in his dealings with people. I have never known him to go back on his word, and with age, I was able to admire his fidelity to his friends. As in the case of Don Santiago, the town tailor who became ill with tuberculosis. When Doctor Helguera informed him that his only hope was to move to the mountains in Córdoba, my father accompanied him there in one of those tiny railway cabins in which contagion seemed guaranteed.
I always remember this attitude. It was an expression of his devotion for friendship, which I was only able to appreciate years after his death. Life can sometimes appear to be a long series of missed opportunities. One day, it was too late to tell him that we loved him despite everything and to thank him for his efforts to warn us of the inevitable misfortunes of life; these misfortunes teach us important lessons.
Not all my memories of my father are terrible; I remember with nostalgia some joys, like the evenings when I would sit on his knees and he would sing the songs from his home, or when, in the afternoon, after his card game at the Social Club, he would bring me a box of Mentolina, the mints that we all liked so much.
Unfortunately, he is gone now, and some fundamental things between us have remained unsaid. When love can no longer be expressed, and the old wounds are left untended, we discover the ultimate solitude: that of the lover without his beloved, the child without his parents, the father without his children.
Many years ago I went to that town, Paola de San Francesco, where my father fell in love with my mother. I caught a glimpse of his childhood in that eternally longed-for place, facing the Mediterranean, and my eyes clouded over.”

Uit: Before the End (Vertaald door Marina Harss))

„My father was the absolute authority in my family; power diminished hierarchically from the eldest brother to the youngest. I still remember looking with fear upon his face, marked simultaneously by candor and hardness. His incontestable decisions were the basis of an ironclad system of commands and punishments that regulated all of us, including my mother. Reserved and stoic, she surely suffered from the effects of that energetic and severe character, but I never heard her complain, and she managed to raise eleven sons under these trying circumstances.
The education we received left deep, unhappy marks on my spirit. But this often harsh upbringing taught us to fulfill our duties, to be consistent, and to finish every task we had begun. And if we have accomplished something in life, it has been as a result of these attributes that we were so brutally forced to acquire.
My father’s severity, which could be terrible, formed my character, which tends toward sadness and melancholy. And it was the main cause of the rebellion of two of my brothers, who ran away from home: Humberto and Pepe, who was known in our town as “that crazy Sábato,” and who ended up running off with the circus, to the great shame of my bourgeois family. This decision greatly upset my mother, but she bore it with the stoicism she displayed throughout her long life; after a protracted illness, she died serenely in her bed in Matilde’s arms at the age of ninety.
My brother Pepe was passionate about the theatre, and he used to act in the town shows, which were known as “Thirty Friends United.” When on occasion they put on criollo4 farces at the Perla movie theater, he always played a part, no matter how small. In his room he had the complete collection of Bambalinas, edited in Buenos Aires, with colorful covers; in addition to these farces, the series included works by Ibsen, and on one memorable occasion, by Tolstoy. I had read the entire collection before turning twelve, and it marked my life deeply; I have always been passionate about the theater, and though I have written several plays, they have never seen the light of day.”

Uit: The Resistance (Vertaald door D. Ohmans)

“There are days when I arise with a demented hope, moments when I feel that the possibilities of a more human life are within reach of our hands. This is one of those days.
And then, I have set to writing almost groping in the dawn, with urgency, like one who might go into the street to ask for help against the threat of a fire, or like a ship that, at the point of disappearing, were to send a last and fervent signal towards a port it knows is near but deafened by the noise of the city and by the number of billboards that disturb the view.
I ask you that we pause to think of the greatness to which we can still aspire if we dare to value life in another way. I ask that courage of you which situates us on man’s true dimension. Everyone, at one time or another, yields. But there is something unfailing and it is the conviction that–only– spiritual values can save us from this earthquake that threatens the human condition.
While I write to you, I have lingered to touch a rustic statuette that the Tuobas gave to me and which reminded me, like a ray in my memory, of a virtual exposition that they showed me yesterday on a computer, which I should admit seemed to me like something from Mandingo. Because to the extent that we relate in an abstract manner, the further we move from the heart of things and a metaphysical indifference takes charge of us while entities without blood or proper names assume power. Tragically, man is losing dialogue with others and recognition of the world that surrounds him, given that it is there where encounters are made, where love is possible, the supreme gestures of life. Table talk, including the discussions or angers, already seem replaced by the hypnotic vision. Television tantalizes us, we remain almost captivated by it. This effect between magical and malevolent is due, I think, to the excess of its light that overcomes us with its intensity.”

Uit: The Tunnel  (Vertaald door Margaret Sayers Peden)

There was only one tunnel, dark and solitary: mine, the tunnel where my childhood, my youth, my whole life had passed. And in one of those clear fragments of the stone wall I had seen this girl and I had naively thought that she was coming through another tunnel parallel to mine, when in reality she belonged to the wide world, the limitless world of those who do not live in tunnels.”

(…)

“More than any other, however, I detest groups of painters. Partly, of course, because painting is what I know best, and we all know that we have a greater reason to detest the things we know well. But I have still another reason: THE CRITICS. They are a plague I have never understood. If I were a great surgeon, and some fellow who had never held a scalpel in his hand, who was not a doctor, and who had never so much as put a splint on a cat’s paw, tried to point out where I had gone wrong with my operation, what would people think? It is the same with painting.”

(…)

“My dear, I have never been able to finish a Russian novel. They are so tiresome. I think there are thousands of characters, and in the end it turns out there are only four of five. Isn’t it maddening just when you begin to recognize a man called Alexandre, he’s called Sacha, and then Satchka, and later Sachenka, and suddenly something pretentious like Alexandre Alexandrovitch Bunine, and later simply Alexandre Alexandrovitch. The minute you get your bearings, they throw you off the track again. There’s no end to it; each character is a whole family in himself.”

Uit: Before the End (Vertaald door Marina Harss))

How many of those immigrants continued to gaze longingly toward their own mountains and rivers, through the distance of sadness and years, from this huge, chaotic factory, this city constructed on a port, which by then had become a desert of accumulated solitudes?

As I walk through this terrible Leviathan, along the shoreline which was first beheld by thousands of immigrants, I can almost hear the melancholy plaint of Aníbal Troilo’s bandoneón.

When the gloom and tumult of Buenos Aires, Make me feel even more alone, I go to the outskirts at nightfall, and Through the murky landscape of A half century, enriched and destroyed By love and disillusionment, I look back at the boy I once was. Ruefully, I recall Hearing the first drops of rain On the dried-out streets, on the Zinc roofs, “Que llueva, que llueva, la vieja está en la cueva,”3 Until the birds would begin to sing, and We ran, barefoot, To play with our boats made out of paper. That was the time of Tom Mix, Of colored playing chips, Of Tesorieri, Mutis, and Bidoglio, The time of carousels with horses, Of warm peanuts on winter afternoons, Of the toy train and its whistle. A world we can catch sight of When we are very alone, In this chaos of noise and cement, That has no place for courtyards filled with Honeysuckle and carnations.

Among that multitude of colonizers, my parents arrived on these shores with the hope of sowing their seed in this “Promised Land” that extended beyond their tears.

My father descended from a family from the mountains in Italy, people accustomed to the asperities of life. But my mother, who came from an old, established Albanian family, was forced to tolerate the deprivations of her life with dignity.

They settled down in Rojas, which, like many of the old towns on the Pampas, had been one of the many forts built by the Spaniards to mark the borderline of Christian civilization.

In this town in the Pampas my father eventually ran a small flour mill, which became the locus of my daydreams when, on Sundays, he would work in the shop, and my brother Arturo and I would climb up on the sacks of wheat, and secretly, as if committing some mysterious act, spend the afternoon eating biscuits.

Uit: Memnon

Unlike the rest of the villa, this suite of rooms had an aura of cleanliness, of elaborate maintenance. An artist’s brush had touched up the wall mural, this one an Arcadian glen where the Muses performed for their father, Zeus; thick rugs strewed the floor, and colorful carpets from the heart of what was once Persia. A fire crackled in the hearth. The smell of wood smoke mingled with that of incense. A breeze from the open window ruffled the sheer linen panels circling the bed. The old Egyptian clucked as he shuffled over and drew the shutter closed.

“Mistress, you’ll catch a chill.”

“I wanted to smell the ocean, Harmouthes.” The woman in bed coughed, struggling for breath. “One last time.”

“You will have many more opportunities for such pleasures, mistress. For now, though, I’ve brought you a guest. The young scholar I told you about.”

She craned her neck, peering at Ariston with eyes darker than a moonless night. “Bring him closer.”

Before the old man, Harmouthes, could say anything, Ariston stepped to the edge of the bed and bowed. The gesture brought a wan smile to the woman’s lips. Ariston reckoned that she had been sick for some time, long enough that he could not fathom her age, though in the flush of health she must have been an incomparable beauty: olive-skinned with lustrous black hair and the delicate features of Persian nobility. Still, her illness-ravaged body bore a measure of its old fire, though muted, as if seen through Death’s gossamer veil.

“Your eyes speak too clearly,” she said, her Greek tinged with a light Persian accent.

“Pardon?” Ariston blinked, taken aback.

“You’re thinking how cruel are the Fates for making the only offer of patronage you’ve had this winter come from the shriveled breast of a dying woman. You’re thinking of how best to preserve your reputation.” She glanced at Harmouthes. “Leave us, my old friend.”

Harmouthes bowed and left the room.“

Schlafschule

Direktorin: Ja, dann nehmen Sie mal Platz, Herr…
Vater: Krause. Und Sie?
Direktorin: Was – und ich?
Vater: Ich meine, wie ist Ihr Name
Direktorin: Klose. Frau Direktor Klose.
Was führt Sie zu mir?
Vater: Ein Anliegen. Ein kleines Anliegen.
Direktorin: Nichts zumachen.

Uit: The Devil’s Dictionary

“CAABA, n.  A large stone presented by the archangel Gabriel to the

patriarch Abraham, and preserved at Mecca.  The patriarch had perhaps

asked the archangel for bread.

CABBAGE, n.  A familiar kitchen-garden vegetable about as large and

wise as a man’s head.

The cabbage is so called from Cabagius, a prince who on ascending

the throne issued a decree appointing a High Council of Empire

consisting of the members of his predecessor’s Ministry and the

cabbages in the royal garden.  When any of his Majesty’s measures of

state policy miscarried conspicuously it was gravely announced that

several members of the High Council had been beheaded, and his

murmuring subjects were appeased.

CALAMITY, n.  A more than commonly plain and unmistakable reminder

that the affairs of this life are not of our own ordering.  Calamities

are of two kinds:  misfortune to ourselves, and good fortune to

others.

CALLOUS, adj.  Gifted with great fortitude to bear the evils

afflicting another.

When Zeno was told that one of his enemies was no more he was

observed to be deeply moved.  “What!” said one of his disciples, “you

weep at the death of an enemy?”  “Ah, ’tis true,” replied the great

Stoic; “but you should see me smile at the death of a friend.”

CALUMNUS, n.  A graduate of the School for Scandal.

Donkere Nacht (Fragment)

O nacht die mij geleid hebt!
O nacht, mij liever dan het ochtendgloren!
O nacht die hebt verenigd
Beminde met beminde,
beminde, opgegaan in de Beminde!

Aan mijn borst, wei vol bloemen,
Hem alleen, onbetreden voorbehouden,
daar is Hij ingeslapen

Mijzelf liet ik, vergat ik;
ik drukte het gelaat aan mijn Beminde;

Uit: Before the End(Vertaald door Marina Harss)

“I walk along the Avenida Costanera Sur, contemplating the portentous river, traversed just over a century ago by thousands of Spaniards, Italians, Jews, Poles, Albanians, Russians, and Germans, driven from their own countries by hunger and poverty. The great visionaries who governed the country at the time offered the Pampas, this metaphor of nothingness, to “all those men who are willing and able,” all those who needed a home, a ground in which to lay their roots. After all, it is not possible to live without a fatherland, or “matria,” as Miguel de Unamuno preferred to call it, given that mothers are the real basis of our existence. But most of those men found a different kind of poverty here, brought on by solitude and nostalgia; as the boat that carried them here steamed out of the harbor, they saw, their faces streaked with tears, their mothers, children, brothers, and sisters retreat toward death, knowing they would never see them again.

Out of that incurable sorrow was born the strange melody called the tango. The virtuoso Enrique Santos Discépolo, the greatest composer of tangos, once defined the tango as a melancholy thought that is danced. Without realizing it, these unpretentious musicians, using whatever instruments they had around-a violin here, a flute there, a guitar-wrote a crucial part of our history. What sailor, from what German port-town, brought over the instrument that would mark this music most deeply and dramatically-the bandoneón? That humble instrument, which was created in order to serve God in the streets intoning Lutheran melodies, found its destiny thousands of leagues away. With the bandoneón, somber and sacred, man was able to express his deepest emotions.“

La maison natale

III
Ai-je voulu me moquer, certes non,

In 2006 verscheen Memnon. Tegenwoordig is hij fulltime schrijver.

Uit: Men of Bronze

“In the blue predawn twilight, a mist rose from the Nile’s surface, flowing up the reed-choked banks and into the ruined streets of Leontopolis. Remnants of monumental architecture floated like islands of stone on a calm morning sea. Streamers of moisture swirled around statues of long-dead pharaohs, flowed past stumps of columns broken off like rotted teeth, and coursed down sandstone steps worn paper-thin by the passage of years. As the sky above grew translucent, streaked with amber and gold, a funerary shroud settled over the City of Lions, a mantle that disguised the approach of armed men.

From the desert came two score and ten dark shapes, clad Greek-fashion in leather cuirasses and studded kilts, Corinthian helmets perched atop their foreheads. Bowl-shaped shields hung from their shoulders by gripcords of plaited hemp, freeing each man to wield a short, recurved bow. They moved in earnest, silent, a company of phantoms drifting through the fog.

The Medjay had come to Leontopolis.

Medjay. The soldiers bearing this appellation were the most savage of Pharaoh’s mercenaries. They were a cadre of outcasts, criminals in their own lands, who banded together under Egypt’s banner to dedicate their lives to the gods of violence.”

Uit: THE DEVIL’S DICTIONARY

ABSENT, adj.

Peculiarly exposed to the tooth of detraction; vilifed; hopelessly in the wrong; superseded in the consideration and affection of another.

To men a man is but a mind. Who cares
What face he carries or what form he wears?
But woman’s body is the woman. O,
Stay thou, my sweetheart, and do never go,
But heed the warning words the sage hath said:
A woman absent is a woman dead.
Jogo Tyree

ABSENTEE, n.

A person with an income who has had the forethought to remove himself from the sphere of exaction.

ABSOLUTE, adj.

Independent, irresponsible. An absolute monarchy is one in which the sovereign does as he pleases so long as he pleases the assassins. Not many absolute monarchies are left, most of them having been replaced by limited monarchies, where the sovereign’s power for evil (and for good) is greatly curtailed, and by republics, which are governed by chance.

ABSTAINER, n.

A weak person who yields to the temptation of denying himself a pleasure. A total abstainer is one who abstains from everything but abstention, and especially from inactivity in the affairs of others.

Said a man to a crapulent youth: “I thought
You a total abstainer, my son.”
“So I am, so I am,” said the scrapgrace caught —
“But not, sir, a bigoted one.”

Donkere Nacht (Fragment)
