In Memoriam Paul Celan

Lay these words into the dead man’s grave

next to the almonds and black cherries—

tiny skulls and flowering blood-drops, eyes,

and Thou, O bitterness that pillows his head.

Lay these words on the dead man’s eyelids

like eyebrights, like medieval trumpet flowers

that will flourish, this time, in the shade.

Let the beheaded tulips glisten with rain.

Lay these words on his drowned eyelids

like coins or stars, ancillary eyes.

Canopy the swollen sky with sunspots

while thunder addresses the ground.

Syllable by syllable, clawed and handled,

the words have united in grief.

It is the ghostly hour of lamentation,

the void’s turn, mournful and absolute.

Lay these words on the dead man’s lips

like burning tongs, a tongue of flame.

A scouring eagle wheels and shrieks.

Let God pray to us for this man.

Lay Back the Darkness

My father in the night shuffling from room to room

on an obscure mission through the hallway.

Help me, spirits, to penetrate his dream

and ease his restless passage.

Lay back the darkness for a salesman

who could charm everything but the shadows,

an immigrant who stands on the threshold

of a vast night

without his walker or his cane

and cannot remember what he meant to say,

though his right arm is raised, as if in prophecy,

while his left shakes uselessly in warning.

My father in the night shuffling from room to room

is no longer a father or a husband or a son,

But a boy standing on the edge of a forest

listening to the distant cry of wolves,

to wild dogs,

to primitive wingbeats shuddering in the treetops.

Today is Sunday

Today is Sunday.

For the first time they took me out into the sun today.

And for the first time in my life I was aghast

that the sky is so far away

          and so blue

          and so vast

I stood there without a motion.

Then I sat on the ground with respectful devotion

leaning against the white wall.

Who cares about the waves with which I yearn to roll

Or about strife or freedom or my wife right now.

The soil, the sun and me…

I feel joyful and how.

Angina Pectoris

If half my heart is here, doctor,

the other half is in China

with the army flowing

     toward the Yellow River.

And, every morning, doctor,

every morning at sunrise my heart

     is shot in Greece.

And every night,c doctor,

when the prisoners are asleep and the infirmary is deserted,

my heart stops at a run-down old house

                                       in Istanbul.

And then after ten years

all i have to offer my poor people

is this apple in my hand, doctor,

one read apple:

               my heart.

And that, doctor, that is the reason

for this angina pectoris–

not nicotine, prison, or arteriosclerosis.

I look at the night through the bars,

and despite the weight on my chest

my heart still beats with the most distant stars.

„Michael Ohayon laid A Suitable Boy, the heavy volume in which he had been immersed for weeks, especially the past two, during his vacation, at the foot of his bed. How was it possible to write a novel like this and at the same time live one’s life? How suddenly familiar and true were the claims voiced by many women in his life, claims he had heard often enough from his only son as well, about the manner in which he lost himself in his work, how there was no approaching him while he was on a case. To create and write about some reality or to investigate it seemed suddenly to him like the very same effort, the very same anxiety.

A sudden noise cut his thoughts short. He hurried to the hallway, and from there to the bathroom. He had left the cabinet door under the sink open so that the dampness there would not grow moldy. The bucket he had placed under the sink had overturned, as if a cat had passed by. But no cat had passed by. The windows were shut and the blinds were closed and rain was pounding and a puddle of dirty water was gathering by the front door. There was no explanation for the overturned bucket. “The butterfly effect,” Tzilla would say had she witnessed the scene, which would be certain to irritate Balilty: “Effects again?” he would exclaim. “Butterflies again?“

– Tu peux venir me voir quand tu veux. Moi, j’ai le temps, je n’ai rien d’autre à faire que de me reposer.
– Mmh.
– Qu’est ce qui te ferais plaisir ? Si tu as envie de quelque chose, je te l’achèterai, tu n’as qu’à me le dire.
– Mmh.

Mein Schritt ging deiner Welt verloren,

Ich hatte noch den warmen Ton,

Den Klang der Stimme in den Ohren.

Auf Wiedersehen sagtest du,

Ich nickte, wollte dir nicht wehren,

Und wusste doch so gut wie du,

Ich würde lange Zeit nicht wiederkehren.

Uit: This is Earl Sandt

„I’ve seen a man die, but not like this. There was silence suddenly around us when he disappeared beyond the trees, silence after terrible sounds, that hammering of his engine, the engine of his aeroplane, and the other sound, after.
He had climbed miraculously up and he had circled the field and we all took off our hats as one, the men among us. Mine as well. Hooray, we cried. My son cried out, too. Hooray. This was why we’d come to this meadow. We would peek into the future and cheer it on.
And Earl Sandt hammered overhead and down to the far edge of the pasture, defying the trees, defying the earth. The propeller of his engine spun behind him and he sat in a rattan chair, as if he was on his front porch smoking a cigar. Then he came back from the tree line, heading our way.
I reached down and touched my son on the shoulder. I had never seen an aeroplane and something was changing in me as it approached. I suppose it scared me some. I had no premonition, but I needed to touch my son at that moment. The plane came toward us and there was a stiff wind blowing—the plane bucked a little, like a nervous horse, but Earl Sandt kept him steady, kept him coming forward, and I felt us all ready to cheer again.
Then there was a movement on the wing. With no particular sound. Still the engine. But there was a tearing away. If I had been Earl Sandt, if I had been sitting in that rattan chair and flying above these bared heads, I might have heard the sound and been afraid.
I lifted my camera. This had nothing to do with the thing happening on the wing. I was only vaguely aware of it in that moment. I lifted my camera and I tripped the shutter, and here was another amazing thing, it seemed to me. One man was flying above the earth, and with a tiny movement of a hand, another man had captured him.”

„It was the first beerbahuti of the season that Gautam had seen. The prettiest of rain-insects, clothed in god’s own red velvet, the beerbahuti was called the Bride of Indra, Lord of the Clouds. This one was crawling upon a blade of grass. A gust of easterly wind brought it rolling down onto the sodden earth. Gautam scooped it up tenderly with the help of a twig and placed it on his palm. Come the rains and the beerbahutis appeared all over the green. From where do they emerge, so perfect in shape and colour, and where do they go? What a brief span of existence they have, but for them it’s a lifetime. This was a solitary beerbahuti and it looked so alone in the expanse and depth of the forest. Right now it sat cosily in its own silence on Gautam’s palm. It could soon be crushed by an animal or a passer-by.

Gautam put it down and made a boat out of a bargad leaf. A brook of rainwater was rippling past the gnarled roots of the banyan where Gautam had been sitting. He let the beerbahuti slide into her barge and put it out to sea. For this minute creature the rivulet must seem like an ocean. “Farewell, Indra’s bride,” Gautam said as the waves carried the leaf-boat away.

He looked up at the sky, collected his staff and cloth bag and resumed his journey. He noticed another red beerbahuti on the lush green grass, slowly making its progress from somewhere to nowhere. He could unwittingly trample these lovely, helpless little beings. He walked carefully across the patch of green and reached the mud track.“

Pourtant pendant le jour encore un froid de loup ;

Je suis sûr, que je vois encore aussi grotesque ;

En transplantant tous leurs palmiers microscopiques ;

Dans tous les sens, beaucoup, là, de traces de pas ;

Nu leef ik in een oort waer vreughde is uytgeweken;

Myn spys is bittre gal, myn sang… Eylaes! Eylaes!

Och! Och! waer heb ik my, misleyde Swaen, versteken!’
