Uit: In Patagonia „In my grandmother’s dining-room there was a glass-fronted cabinet and in the cabinet a piece of skin. It was a small piece only, but thick and leathery, with strands of coarse, reddish hair. It was stuck to a card with a rusty pin. On the card was some writing in faded black ink, but I was too young then to read. ‘What’s that?’ ‘A piece of brontosaurus.’ My mother knew the names of two prehistoric animals, the brontosaurus and the mammoth. She knew it was not a mammoth. Mammoths came from Siberia. The brontosaurus, I learned, was an animal that had drowned in the Flood, being too big for Noah to ship aboard the Ark. I pictured a shaggy lumbering creature with claws and fangs and a malicious green light in its eyes. Sometimes the brontosaurus would crash through the bedroom wall and wake me from my sleep. This particular brontosaurus had lived in Patagonia, a country in South America, at the far end of the world. Thousands of years before, it had fallen into a glacier, travelled down a mountain in a prison of blue ice, and arrived in perfect condition at the bottom. Here my grandmother’s cousin, Charley Milward the Sailor, found it. Charley Milward was captain of a merchant ship that sank at the entrance to the Strait of Magellan. He survived the wreck and settled nearby, at Punta Arenas, where he ran a ship-repairing yard. The Charley Milward of my imagination was a god among men–tall, silent and strong, with black mutton-chop whiskers and fierce blue eyes. He wore his sailor’s cap at an angle and the tops of his sea-boots turned down. Directly he saw the brontosaurus poking out of the ice, he knew what to do. He had it jointed, salted, packed in barrels, and shipped to the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. I pictured blood and ice, flesh and salt, gangs of Indian workmen and lines of barrels along a shore–a work of giants and all to no purpose; the brontosaurus went rotten on its voyage through the tropics and arrived in London a putrefied mess; which was why you saw brontosaurus bones in the museum, but no skin. Fortunately cousin Charley had posted a scrap to my grandmother. My grandmother lived in a red-brick house set behind a screen of yellow-spattered laurels. It had tall chimneys, pointed gables and a garden of blood-coloured roses. Inside it smelled of church. I do not remember much about my grandmother except her size. I would clamber over her wide bosom or watch, slyly, to see if she’d be able to rise from her chair. Above her hung paintings of Dutch burghers, their fat buttery faces nesting in white ruffs. On the mantelpiece were two Japanese homunculi with red and white ivory eyes that popped out on stalks. I would play with these, or with a German articulated monkey, but always I pestered her: ‘Please can I have the piece of brontosaurus.’ De Britse schrijfster Daphne du Maurier werd geboren in Londen op 13 mei 1907 Uit: Jamaica Inn „It was a cold grey day in late November, The weather had changed overnight when a backing wind brought a granite sky and a mizzling rain with it,and although it was now only a little after two o’clock in the afternoon the pallour of a winter evening seemed to have closed upon the hills, cloaking them in mist. It would be dark by four. The air was clammy cold, and for all the tightly closed windows It penetrated the interior of the coach. The leather seats damp to the hands, and there must have been a small crack in the roof, because now and again little drips of rain fell softly through, smudging the leather and leaving a dark blue stain like a splodge of ink. The Wind came in gusts, at times shaking the coach as it travelled round the bend of the road, and in the exposed places on the high ground it blew with such force that the whole body of the coach trembled and swayed, rocking between the high wheels like a drunken man. The driver, muffled in a greatcoat to his ears, bent almost double in his seat; in a faint endeavour to gain shelter from his own shoulders, while the dispirited horses plodded sullenly to his command, too broken by the wind and the rain to feel the whip that now and again cracked above their heads, while it: swung between the numb fingers of the driver. The wheels of the coach creaked and groaned as they sank onto the rats on the road, and sometimes they flung up the soft spattered mud against the windows, where it mingled with the constant driving rain, and whatever view there might have been of the countryside was hopelessly obscured. The few passengers huddled together for warmth, exclaiming in unison when the coach sank into a heavier rut than usual, and one old fellow, who had kept up a constant complaint ever since he had joined the coach at Truro, rose from his seat in a fury, and, fumbling with the window sash, let the window down with a crash, bringing a shower of rain in upon himself and his fellow passengers. He thrust his head out and shouted up to the driver, cursing him in a high petulant voice for a rogue and a murderer; that they would all be dead before they reached Bodmin if he persisted in driving at breakneck speed; they had no breath left in their bodies as it was, and he for one would never travel by coach again. Whether the driver heard him or not was uncertain; it seemed more likely that the stream of reproaches was carried away in the wind, for the old fellow, after waiting a moment, put up the window again, having thoroughly chilled the interior of the coach, and, settling himself once more in his comer, wrapped his blanket about his knees and muttered in his beard.” That always makes me nostalgic, since I ran the place for twelve years before selling it to my business partner, Brian Hawkins. My T cells had begun to climb by then, and I was sick of pushing Tuscan flowerpots to bored housewives. I wanted to plant something serious for once, to leave my mark on the earth before somebody planted me. I’ve never regretted that decision. I’m now tending at least a dozen mature gardens that I myself created years ago: lush green kingdoms seeded from my own imagination. Not that it’s getting easier. My arthritis seems to be here for good, and the sheer grunt work of the job can put me out of commission for days on end. I’m my own boss, of course, so I can adjust my schedule accordingly, and I do have an assistant now — the aptly named Jake Greenleaf — who helps me with the trimming and hauling. But the big question remains: How long can I keep this up? The topic is almost unavoidable at Plant Parenthood, since Brian turned sixty-one this year, and retirement is his chief preoccupation.“ De Nederlandse dichter en godsdiensthistoricus Theo van Baaren werd op 13 mei 1912 geboren in Utrecht.

Auf der immerstillen Flur;
Nur die fernen Geigen singen
Von denen, die vorübergingen
In diesem Leben ohne Spur.

Misanthropie
Menschen zijn lelijk, met hun lijf mismaakt
Door ’t zwoegen, ’t droevig kleed en eeuw’ge ziekten;
Uw beendren zijn verkankerd door de zonde;
‘k Zou, als ‘k uw bleeke mom afscheuren konde,
’n Beestmuil zien grijnzen. Dóód zijt gij; gesmoord,
Dóód is uw vlam.
Groote onvoldane, o albezielde Zee!
Laat steigrend nu dien storm-hoogdag opjoelen,
Zee!
Zee! eindlijk mijn! Hoog jubelt in mijn lijf
Verlicht in eigen loutere eindloosheid.
Zomermiddag

O droomen, kort uw onbesuisde wieken,
Ontvlucht de luidheid van het middaguur
En nestelt u diep in den angelieken
Tempelhof, gewijd aan het Vestaalsche vuur.
Dichters moeten de minnaars uit zich weren
Willen zij naakt gelijk de goden zijn,
En in eenzaamheid de muziek der spheren
Ontlokken aan de harpen van hun pijn.
Daarom, neem afscheid, ziel, van de lichamen
En hun zachte, verwilderende pracht,
En vouw nog eenmaal uwe vleugels samen
Binnen de kuischheid van den eigen nacht.

Love-Lily
Between the hands, between the brows,
Between the lips of Love-Lily,
A spirit is born whose birth endows
My blood with fire to burn through me;
Who breathes upon my gazing eyes,
Who laughs and murmurs in mine ear,
At whose least touch my colour flies,
And whom my life grows faint to hear.
Within the voice, within the heart,
Within the mind of Love-Lily,
A spirit is born who lifts apart
His tremulous wings and looks at me;
Who on my mouth his finger lays,
And shows, while whispering lutes confer,
That Eden of Love’s watered ways
Whose winds and spirits worship her.
Brows, hands, and lips, heart, mind, and voice,
Kisses and words of Love-Lily,–
Oh! bid me with your joy rejoice
Till riotous longing rest in me!
Ah! let not hope be still distraught,
But find in her its gracious goal,
Whose speech Truth knows not from her thought
Nor Love her body from her soul.
Sudden Light
I have been here before,
But when or how I cannot tell:
I know the grass beyond the door,
The sweet keen smell,
The sighing sound, the lights around the shore.
You have been mine before,–
How long ago I may not know:
But just when at that swallow’s soar
Your neck turn’d so,
Some veil did fall,–I knew it all of yore.
Has this been thus before?
And shall not thus time’s eddying flight
Still with our lives our love restore
In death’s despite,
And day and night yield one delight once more?

Nachtzwemmen
De maan rolt een loper
van licht op het water.
We waden ernaar
naakt in het donker
raken niet verloren
langs de baan van de maan
van licht door het water
alleen zichtbaar
voor dat van elkaar
is ons lichaam.
Elke morgen, wedergeboorte
omdat jij in mijn oor fluisterde:

SELF-PORTRAIT
Unshaven and thin, with an angular face
He’s lain on my mattress
for several days.
A cast-iron shadow hangs down the stair,
the lips, huge and bulging, smuggle and flare.
“Hello, Russian poets, — his voice sounds wistful —
shall I give you a razor or, maybe, a pistol?
Are you a genius? Disdain all this chaos…
Or, p’rhaps, you will say your confessional prayers?
Or take a newspaper, clip out a bar
and roll self-reproach like you roll a cigar?”
Why is he cuddling you when I’m there?
Why is he trying my scarf on? How dare?
He’s squinting at my cigarettes… Oh yes!
Keep off me! Keep off!
SOS! SOS!
MY FRIEND’S LIGHT
I’m waiting for my friend. The gate’s unlocked.
The banisters are lit so he can walk.
I’m waiting for my friend. The times are dull and tough.
Anticipation lightens our life.
He’s driving down the Ring Road, at full speed,
the way I did it when he was in need.
He will arrive to find the spot at once,
the pine is lit well in advance.
There is a dog. His eyes are phosphorescent.
Are you a friend? I see you’re not complacent…
Some headlights push the darkness off the drive.
My friend is to arrive.
He said that he would come at nine or so.
People are watching a TV show.
Should animosity drop in I’ll turn it out, —
I’ll wait around.
Months, years go by, but Herman’s not in sight.
The whole of nature is cut off from light.
I’ll see my friend in hell, or paradise, alive.
I have been waiting for him all my life.
He said he’d come at nine or so today.
God save him while he’s on his way.

Uit: Walking on the Land
„On a summer’s day in 1999 our aging Labrador announced the arrival of a visitor to our Cape Breton farmstead.
Nothing unusual in that. My wife, Claire, and I receive many visitors. However, this was an exceptional one. The small, solidly built, black-haired woman with darting eyes and gleaming smile who stepped tentatively out of a rental car was from another time.
She was Elisapee – a name given to her at three yea
rs of age when she was thrust into our world from another, older one. There she had been called Nurrahaq. Her people were Inuit whom I had met in 1947 and again in 1948. The Ihalmiut – People from Beyond – were inland dwellers with no knowledge of the sea and little of modern times. Nurrahaq was the youngest daughter of a woman named Kikik, whose tormented latter days impinged on my days for more than a decade.
Although Elisapee grew up on the fringes of the ancient Ihalmiut lands, and in the company of other Inuit, she was nevertheless walled off from her origins because the few remaining adult Ihalmiut believed the phantoms of the past could best be dealt with by consigning memory of them to limbo.
When Elisapee Karetak – her married name – was in her early thirties, she felt compelled to enter that place of shadows but was advised, “Leave it alone. It is all over now. It is nothing to you now.”
Elisapee might have obeyed these injunctions. Nurrahaq would not. So Kikik’s child embarked on a search “for understanding of what I was … of who my people were … of why I had no past.”
Severe disapproval from her compatriots and peers frustrated her early efforts. Yet she persisted with such intensity as to alienate her from her own community and threaten her health.
It was at this juncture that a worn copy of a book of mine, The Desperate People, published in 1959, made its way to the Arctic village of Arviat (formerly Eskimo Point), where Elisapee was living. In it she found an account of the ordeals endured by her mother and her people, and something of their history.
Heartened by this discovery, she eventually travelled from her home on the western coast of Hudson Bay to mine on the eastern seaboard of North America, determined to add whatever I might know to her knowledge of a forgotten and forbidden past.
Many others assisted Elisapee in her search. Foremost among them was Ole Gjerstad, a documentary film-maker from Montreal who became Elisapee’s champion. Such was his capacity for sympathetic mediation that the situation in Arviat underwent a sea change and the barriers between past and present were overthrown. Elisapee and the other surviving Ihalmiut became one again, and together they resurrected memories of other times, not as tales of suffering and guilt but as testimony to the indomitable spirit of their kind.”

Voor moederdag
Die mich einst …
Die mich einst mit Schmerz gebar
doch mit Mutterfreuden –
da ich noch ein Knäblein war,
vieles mußte leiden,
stets mich doch mit Sorg’ gepflegt
und mit Angst und Mühe
und mich oft noch huldreich trägt:
Siehe, wie ich blühe.
Und ein Liedchen singe ich
die voll Dank und Freude.
Nimm es an und freue dich,
höre, was ich heute
wünsche dir voll Dankbarkeit:
Lebe uns zufrieden
lange noch; was dich erfreut
müsse dich hinieden
stets beglücken; ohne Rast
blühen deine wangen
von Gesundheit, Sorgenlast
möge dich nicht fangen.
Und mit froher Munterkeit
werd des Alters Beute,
schau der Kinder Seligkeit,
sieh, dies wünsch ich heute.

Bij Pinksteren
Pinksteren
wezen.

Er was een wollig schaap, dat witte lammeren had;
Code d’Honneur
Bezie de kinderen niet te klein:
Zij moeten veel verdragen –
eenzaamheid, angsten, groeiens pijn
en, onverhoeds, de slagen.
Bezie de kinderen niet te klein:
Hun eerlijkheid blijft vragen,
of gij niet haast uzelf durft zijn.
Dàn kunt ge ’t met hen wagen.
Laat uw comedie op de gang
– zij weten ’t immers tòch al lang! –
Dan schenk’ u God genade.

“It’s raining softly and there is no end to it, it rains with no zeal, but with infinite patience, as if all of life ran through the drizzle; it rains on the earth which shares the same tones with the sky; a color between soft green and ashen gray. The mountain line, on the horizon, had been erased a long time ago.
“Many hours ago?”
“No, many years ago. The mountain line was erased when Lizaro Codesal died. We know our Lord didn’t want people to see it again.”
Lazaro Codesal died in Morocco, in the outpost of Tizzi-Azza; he was probably killed by an Arab from Tafersit’s tribe. Lizaro Codesal had a way with knocking up young women; he also had the inclination. He was red-haired, and he had blue eyes. What good did it do Lazaro Codesal, who died very young, not quite twenty-two, to be the best pole fighter in a five-mile radius or more? Lizaro Codesal was killed from behind by an Arab, he killed him while he was jacking off under a fig tree. Everyone knows that the shade of the fig tree is very propitious for quiet sins. If Lizaro Codesal had been approached from the front he wouldn’t have been killed by anyone, neither by an Arab, nor by an Asturian; or by a Portuguese, or a Leonese, or by anyone else for that matter. The mountain line was erased when Lizaro Codesal was killed, and it was seen no more.
It rains tediously, as well as persistently, since Saint Raymond Nonnatus’s feast day, perhaps even before then. Today is Saint Macarius’s day, the saint who brings luck at cards and with raffle tickets. It has been drizzling slowly and without stopping for over nine months on the grasses of the fields, and on my window panes. It drizzles, but it’s not cold; not very cold, I mean. If I knew how to play the violin, I would spend my afternoons fiddling. And if I knew how to play the harmonica, I would spend my afternoons playing it, but I don’t know how. What I do know how to play is the bagpipe, and it is not suitable to play the pipes inside the house. Since I don’t know how to play the violin, or the harmonica, and since one should not blow the bagpipe indoors, I spend my afternoons in bed doing filthy things with Benicia (later I will tell you who Benicia is; this woman with nipples like chestnuts). In the capital you can go to the movies to see Lily Pons, the young and distinguished soprano, in the lead female role on the film I Dream Too Much. That’s what the paper says, although there is no movie house here.
In the cemetery flows a spring of clear water that rinses the bones of the dead, and also washes their peculiarly cold liver. They call it the Miangueiro spring; the lepers wash their flesh in it to find some relief. The blackbird sings on the same cypress where the solitary nightingale delivers its mournful song. There are almost no lepers left nowadays; it’s not like before, when there were a lot of them, and they whistled like hoot-owls to warn each other against the missionary friars who chased after them to grant them absolution.”

Vroege Voorjaarsavond
Het ongelezen boek viel naast hem neder;
De lenten gingen en de lenten komen;
Heen is elk verweer,

“However, there are things that have emerged in the show that are offensive to the Japanese culture. I am not one who is a firm believer in being politically correct all the time. I quote “Avenue Q”: Everyone’s a little bit racist. And yet several of the laughs to be had in this show are easy laughs at the expense of a careless, lazy stereotype. If you leave the theater feeling uncomfortable (like some of my friends) or just plain wondering if I’m racist (like my mom), know that you’re not alone. Since the theater already put their own disclaimer on the postcards (“If you come expecting a play with substance, you won’t get your money back”), I offer my own words as to why a seemingly harmless show can seem so hurtful.
Before proceeding, I feel inclined to say that “Giant Green Lizard – The Musical” is, first and foremost, a piece of entertainment, meant to amuse. When I was asked to write it, it was to be understood that this was something to make audiences laugh and cheer, a spectacle as never before seen on a storefront theater stage. It was never meant as a show that someone could read into or pull special meanings from. Being a writer who naturally feels the need to provoke an audience into thinking about whatever happens to be on my mind, I found the prospect of writing something purely for the entertainment value an interesting experiement.”

“In an apartment at Versailles, under the rooms and the favoring eye of Mme. de Pompadour, that economic theory took form which was to stir and mold the Revolution, and shape the capitalism of the nineteenth century.
The French economy had been struggling to grow despite the swaddling clothes of regulations — by guilds and Colbert — and the Midas myth of a mercantilism that mistook gold for wealth. To increase exports, diminish imports, and take the “favorable balance” in silver and gold as a prop of political and military power, France and England had subjected their national economies to a mesh of rules and restraints helpful to economic order but harming production by hampering innovation, enterprise, and competition. All this — said men like Gournay, Quesnay, Mirabeau pere, Du Pont de Nemours, and Turgot — was quite contrary to nature; man is by nature acquisitive and competitive; and if his nature is freed from unnecessary trammels he will astonish the world with the quantity, variety and excellence of his products. So, said these “physiocrats,” let nature (in Greek, physis) rule (kratein); let men invent, manufacture, and trade according to their natural instincts; or, as Gournay is said to have said, laissez faire—”let him do” as he himself thinks best. The famous phrase was already old, for about 1664, when Colbert asked businessman Legendre, “What should we [the government] do to help you?” he answered, “Nous laisser faire — let us do it, let us alone.
Jean-Claude Vincent de Gournay was the first clear voice of the physiocrats in
France. Doubtless he knew of the protests that Boisguillebert and Vauban had made to Louis XIV against the stifling restrictions laid upon agriculture under the feudal regime. He was so impressed by Sir Josiah Child’s Brief Observations Concerning Trade and
Interest (1668) that he translated it into French (1754); and presumably he had read Richard Cantillon’s Essay on the Nature of Commerce (c. 1734) in its French form (1755). Some would date from this last book the birth of economics as a “science” — a reasoned analysis of the sources, production, and distribution of wealth. “Land,” said Cantillon, “is the source of material from which wealth is extracted,” but “human labor is the form which produces wealth”; and he defined wealth not in terms of gold or money, but as “the sustenance, conveniences, and comforts of life.” This definition was itself a revolution in economic theory.”

“It was her favorite time of day. Dusk. That in-between hour before night descended when everything was softly muted, merging together. The twilight hour.
Her Scottish nanny had called it the gloaming. She loved that name; it conjured up so much, and even when she was a little girl she had looked forward to the late afternoon, that period just before supper. As she had walked home from school with her brother Tim, Nanny between them, tightly holding on to their hands, she had always felt a twinge of excitement, an expectancy, as if something special awaited her. This feeling had never changed. It had stayed with her over the years, and wherever she was in the world, dusk never failed to give her a distinct sense of anticipation.
She stepped away from her drawing table and went across to the window of her downtown loft, peered out, looking toward the upper reaches of Manhattan. To Alexandra Gordon the sky was absolutely perfect at this precise moment…its color a mixture of plum and violet toned down by a hint of smoky gray bleeding into a faded pink. The colors of antiquity, reminiscent of Byzantium and Florence and ancient Greece. And the towers and spires and skyscrapers of this great modern metropolis were blurred, smudged into a sort of timelessness, seemed of no particular period at this moment, inchoate images cast against that almost-violet sky.”

“I DO NOT EXIST. And just in case some untrusting, stubborn, ill- meaning person should refine to believe what I say so plainly, or should demand some sort of sworn testimony before believing it–I swear, I solemnly swear that I do not exist; and I likewise protest against any and all inclinations or attempts to consider me as being endowed with the unequivo cal attributes of real existence. I declare that I am not even a portrait of any body, and I promise that if one of our contemporary deep-thinkers were to start looking for similarities between my fleshless, boneless being and any individual susceptible to an experiment in vivisection, I should rush to the defense of my rights as a myth, demonstrating with witnesses called forth
from a place of my own choosing that I neither am, nor have been, nor ever will be, anybody. I am–putting it obscurely in order for you to understand it better–an artistic, diabolical condensation, a fabrication born of human thought (ximia Dei) which, whenever it grasps in its fingers a bit of literary style, uses it to start imitating what God has done with material substance in the physical world; I am one more example of those falsifications of a man which from the dawn of time have been sold on the block by people I call idlers–and by so doing I fail in my filial duties–though an undiscerning and overgenerous public confers on them the title of artist, poet, or something of the sort. I am a chimera, dream of a dream, shadow of a shade, suspicion of a possibility: I enjoy my nonexistence, I watch the senseless passing of infinite time, which is so boring that it holds my attention, and I begin to wonder whether being nobody isn’t the same as being everybody, whether my not possessing any personal attributes isn’t the same as possessing the very attributes of existence itself. This is a matter which I haven’t clarified as yet, and I pray God I never may, lest I be deprived of that illusion of pride which always alleviates the frigid boredom of these realms of pure thought.”

Was bedeutete das?

“Was hat ihm denn gefehlt?”

“The Ransomes had been burgled. “Robbed,” Mrs. Ransome said. “Burgled,” Mr. Ransome corrected. Premises were burgled; persons were robbed. Mr. Ransome was a solicitor by profession and thought words mattered. Though “burgled” was the wrong word too. Burglars select; they pick; they remove one item and ignore others. There is a limit to what burglars can take: they seldom take easy chairs, for example, and even more seldom settees. These burglars did. They took everything.
The Ransomes had been to the opera, to Così fan tutte (or Così as Mrs. Ransome had learned to call it). Mozart played an important part in their marriage. They had no children and but for Mozart would probably have split up years ago. Mr. Ransome always took a bath when he came home from work and then he had his supper. After supper he took another bath, this time in Mozart. He wallowed in Mozart; he luxuriated in him; he let the little Viennese soak away all the dirt and disgustingness he had had to sit through in his office all day. On this particular evening he had been to the public baths, Covent Garden, where their seats were immediately behind the Home Secretary. He too was taking a bath and washing away the cares of his day, cares, if only in the form of a statistic, that were about to include the Ransomes.
On a normal evening, though, Mr. Ransome shared his bath with no one, Mozart coming personalized via his headphones and a stack of complex and finely balanced stereo equipment that Mrs. Ransome was never allowed to touch. She blamed the stereo for the burglary as that was what the robbers were probably after in the first place. The theft of stereos is common; the theft of fitted carpets is not.”

A WORD OF ADVICE TO MY FRIENDS
Let’s exclaim, admire each other.
We don’t have to fear high-flown words.
Let’s compliment each other-
surely these are the happy moments of love.
Let’s grieve and cry openly
now together, now separately, now in turn.
We don’t have to pay attention to gossip-
since sadness always goes along with love.
Lets’ catch each others’s meaning at once,
so that having made one mistake, we won’t make any more.
Let’s live, indulging each other in everything-
especially since life is so short.
TIME PASSES
Time passes, whether you joke or don’t joke,
like an ocean wave – it will sweep us away.
But wait, that’s all in the future,
let me breathe Moscow in for a while.
Do you see that house with all the lights on,
my friends want me there alive and well.
Don’t hurry, Time, where would they be without me –
how could one not think of this?
Let me quench my thirst with blue water,
for now hold back weariness and tears.
Be patient, I’ll settle accounts with you, –
I won’t be your debtor forever.

Psalm
Always grief to me have been your concealed solitude
But God, what was I to do?
I played with you as a child and
Let imagination take you to pieces like a toy.
Then the untamed grew stronger within,
my songs died away,
and without ever having felt you close
I lost you for ever
in dust, in fire, in air, and on waters.
From sunrise to sunset
I am all clay and suffering.
You have confined yourself in the sky as in a coffin.
Oh, weren’t you a closer kin to death
than you are to life,
you would speak to me. Right from where you are,
within the earth or within the tale- you would speak to me.
Show yourself among the thorns here, God,
so that I should know what you want of me.
Shall I catch in the air the poisoned spear
thrown by the other from the depths to wound you beneath your wings?
Or there is nothing that you want of me?
You are the mute, still identity
(a round itself is a),
and you ask for nothing. Not even for my prayers.
Look, the stars are coming into the world
along with my questioning sorrows.
Look, it is night with no windows outside.
What am I going to do from now on, God?
In you I take off my mortal flesh. I take it off
as if it were a coat left on the way.

Three Valentines to the Wide World
I
The child disturbs our view. Tow-head bent, she
stands on one leg and folds up the other. She is listening
to the sound of her fingernail on a scab on her knee.
If I were her mother I would think right now of the chastening
that ridiculous arrangement of bones and bumps must go through,
and that big ear too, till they learn what to do and hear.
People don’t perch like something seen in a zoo
or in tropical sections of Florida. They’ll have to buy her
a cheap violin if she wants to make scraping noises.
She is eight years old. What in the world could she wear
that would cover her hinges and disproportions? Her face is
pointed and blank, the brows as light as the hair.
“Mother, is love God’s hobby?” At eight you don’t even
look up from your scab when you ask it. A kid’s squeak,
is that a fit instrument for such a question?
Eight times the seasons turned and cold snow tricked
the earth to death, and still she hasn’t noticed.
Her friend has a mean Dad, a milkman always kicks
at the dog, but by some childish hocus-pocus
she blinks them away. She counts ten and sucks in her cheeks
and the globe moves under the green thumb of an Amateur,
the morning yelp, the crying at recess are gone.
In the freeness of time He gardens, and to His leisure
old stems entrust new leaves all winter long.
Hating is hard work, and the uncaring thought is hard;
but loving is easy, love is that lovely play
that makes us and keeps us? No one answers you. Such absurd
charity of the imagination has shamed us, Emily.
I remember now. Legs shoved you up, you couldn’t tell
where the next tooth would fall out or grow in, or what
your own nose would look like next year. Anything was possible.
Then it slowed down, and you had to keep what you got.
When this child’s body stretches to the grace of her notion,
and she’s tamed and curled, may she be free enough to bring
mind and heart to that serious recreation
where anything is still possible–or almost anything.

Héé, waar is mijn hoed?’

Uit: The Crying of Lot 49
“One summer afternoon Mrs Oedipa Maas came home from a Tupperware party whose hostess had put perhaps too much kirsch in the fondue to find that she, Oedipa, had been named executor, or she supposed executrix, of the estate of one Pierce Inverarity, a California real estate mogul who had once lost two million dollars in his spare time but still had assets numerous and tangled enough to make the job of sorting it all out more than honorary. Oedipa stood in the living room, stared at by the greenish dead eye of the TV tube, spoke the name of God, tried to feel as drunk as possible. But this did not work. She thought of a hotel room in Mazatlan whose door had just been slammed, it seemed forever, waking up two hundred birds down in the lobby; a sunrise over the library slope at Cornell University that nobody out on it had seen because the slope faces west; a dry, disconsolate tune from the fourth movement of the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra; a whitewashed bust of Jay Gould that Pierce kept over the bed on a shelf so narrow for it she’d always had the hovering fear it would someday topple on them. Was that how he’d died, she wondered, among dreams, crushed by the only ikon in the house? That only made her laugh, out loud and helpless: You’re so sick, Oedipa, she told herself, or the room, which knew.
The letter was from the law firm of Warpe, Wistfull, Kubitschek and McMingus, of Los Angeles, and signed by somebody named Metzger. It said Pierce had died back in the spring, and they’d only just now found the will. Metzger was to act as co-executor and special counsel in the event of any involved litigation. Oedipa had been named also to execute the will in a codicil dated a year ago. She tried to think back to whether anything unusual had happened around then. Through the rest of the afternoon, through her trip to the market in downtown Kinneret-Among-The-Pines to buy ricotta and listen to the Muzak (today she came through the bead-curtained entrance around bar 4 of the Fort Wayne Settecento Ensemble’s variorum recording of the Vivaldi Kazoo Concerto, Boyd Beaver, soloist); then through the sunned gathering of her marjoram and sweet basil from the herb garden, reading of book reviews in the latest Scientific American, into the layering of a lasagna, garlicking of a bread, tearing up of romaine leaves, eventually, oven on, into the mixing of the twilight’s whiskey sours against the arrival of her husband, Wendell (“Mucho”) Maas from work, she wondered, wondered, shuffling back through a fat deckful of days which seemed (wouldn’t she be first to admit it?) more or less identical, or all pointing the same way subtly like a conjurer’s deck, any odd one readily clear to a trained eye.”

Uit: The Historical Interpretation of Literature
“To begin with, it will be worth while to say something about the kind of criticism which seems to be furthest removed from this. There is a comparative criticism which tends to be non-historical. The essays of T. S. Eliot, which have had such an immense influence in our time, are, for example, fundamentally non-historical. Eliot sees, or tries to see, the whole of literature, so far as he is acquaninted with it, spread out before him under the aspect of eternity. He then compares the work of different periods and countries, and tries to draw from it general conclusions about what literature out to be. He understands, of
course, that our point of view in connection with literature changes, and he has what seems to me a very sound conception of the whole body of writing of the past as something to which new works are continually added, and which is not thereby merely increased in bulk but modified as a whole—so that Sophocles is no longer precisely what he was for Aristotle, or Shakespeare what he was for Ben Jonson or for Dryden or for Dr. Johnson, on account of all the later literature that has intervened between them and us. Yet at every point of this continual accretion, the whole field may be surveyed, as it were, spread out before the critic. The critic tries to see it as God might; he calls the books to a Day of Judgement. And, looking at things in this way, he may arrive at interesting and valuable conclusions which could hardly be reached by approaching them in any other way. Eliot was able to see, for example—what I believe had never been noticed before—that the French Symbolist poetry of the nineteenth century had certain fundamental resemblances to the English poetry of the age of Donne. Another kind of critic would draw certain historical conclusions from these purely esthetic findings, as the Russian D. S. Minsky did; but Eliot does not draw them.
“Another example of this kind of non-historical criticism, in a somewhat different way and on a somewhat different plane, is the work of the late George Saintsbury. Saintsbury was a connoisseur of wines; he wrote an entertaining book on the subject. And his attitude toward literature, too, was that of the connoisseur. He tastes the authors and tells you about the vintages; he distinguishes the qualities of the various wines. His palate was as fine as could be, and he possessed the great qualification that he knew how to take each book on its own terms without expecting it to be some other book and was thus in a positions to appreciate a great variety of kinds of writing. He was a man of strong social prejudices and peculiarly intransigent political views, but, so far as it is humanly possible, he kept them out of his literary criticism. The result is on of the most agreeable and most comprehensive commentaries on literature that have ever been written in English. Most scholars who have read as much as Saintsbury do not have Saintsbury’s discriminating taste. Here is a critic who has covered the whole ground like any academic historian, yet whose account of it is not merely a chronology but a record of fastidious enjoyment. Since enjoyment is the only thing he is looking for, he does not need to know the causes of things, and the historical background of literature does not interest him very much.”

Riprap
Lay down these words
Before your mind like rocks.
placed solid, by hands
In choice of place, set
Before the body of the mind
in space and time:
Solidity of bark, leaf or wall
riprap of things:
Cobble of milky way,
straying planets,
These poems, people,
lost ponies with
Dragging saddles —
and rocky sure-foot trails.
The worlds like an endless
Four-dimensional
Game of Go.
ants and pebbles
In the thin loam, each rock a word
a creek-washed stone
Granite: ingrained
with torment of fire and weight
Crystal and sediment linked hot
all change, in thoughts,
As well as things.
After Work
The shack and a few trees
float in the blowing fog
I pull out your blouse,
warm my cold hands
on your breasts.
you laugh and shudder
peeling garlic by the
hot iron stove.
bring in the axe, the rake,
the wood
we’ll lean on the wall
against each other
stew simmering on the fire
as it grows dark
drinking wine.
The Spring
Beating asphalt into highway potholes
pickup truck we’d loaded
road repair stock shed & yard
a day so hot the asphalt went in soft.
pipe and steel plate tamper
took turns at by hand
then drive the truck rear wheel
a few times back and forth across the fill–
finish it off with bitchmo around the edge.
the foreman said let’s get a drink
& drove through the woods and flower fields
shovels clattering in back
into a black grove by a cliff
a rocked in pool
feeding a fern ravine
tin can to drink
numbing the hand and cramping in the gut
surging through the fingers from below
& dark here–
let’s get back to the truck
get back on the job.

“In April 2000, two Nigerian journalists living in Dublin, Abel Ugba and Chinedu Onyejelem, started publishing a multicultural paper called Metro Eireann. I read an article about these men in the Irish Times, and decided that I’d like to meet them. Three or four years into our new national prosperity, I was already reading and hearing elegies to the simpler times, before we became so materialistic — the happy days when more people left Ireland than were born here; when we were afraid to ask anyone what they did for a living, because the answer might be ‘Nothing’; when we sent our pennies and our second-hand clothes to Africa but never saw a flesh-and-blood African. The words ‘racist’ and ‘racism’ were being flung around the place, and the stories were doing the rounds. An African woman got a brand new buggy from the Social Welfare and left it at the bus stop because she couldn’t be bothered carrying it onto the bus, and she knew she could get a new one. A man looked over his garden wall and found a gang of Muslims next door on the patio, slaughtering an Irish sheep. A Polish woman rented a flat and, before the landlord had time to bank the deposit, she’d turned it into a brothel, herself and her seven sisters and their cousin, the pimp. I heard those three, and more, from taxi drivers. I thought I’d like to make up a few of my own.”

„They’d been drawing for over half an hour. There was no sound except for the slurring of pencils on Michelet paper or the barely perceptible squeak of charcoal. At the center of the circle of students, close to the dais, a stove cast a barred red light onto the floor. The smell of burning coke mingled with other smells: sweat, hot cloth, cigar and tobacco smoke. Now and again you could hear the soft pop of lips inhaling and another plume of blue smoke would rise to join the pall that hung over the whole room.
Nobody spoke. You were not allowed to talk in the life class. In the Antiques Room, where they spent the mornings copying from casts of Classical and Renaissance sculpture, talking was permitted, and the students—a few of the women, in particular—chattered nonstop. Here, apart from the naked woman on the dais, the atmosphere was not unlike a men’s club. The women students had their own separate life class somewhere on the lower floor. Even the Slade, scandalously modern in most respects, segregated the sexes when the naked human body was on display.
Paul Tarrant, sitting on the back row, as far away from the stove as he could get, coughed discreetly into his handkerchief. He was still struggling to throw off the bronchitis that had plagued him all winter and the fumes irritated his lungs. He’d finished his drawing, or at least he’d reached the point where he knew that further work would only make matters worse. He leaned back and contemplated the page. Not one of his better efforts.”

’t Is nu kwart over negen.

Never The Time And The Place
Never the time and the place
And the loved one all together!
This path–how soft to pace!
This May — what magic weather!
Where is the loved one’s face?
In a dream that loved one’s face meets mine,
But the house is narrow, the place is bleak
Where, outside, rain and wind combine
With a furtive ear, if I strive to speak,
With a hostile eye at my flushing cheek,
With a malice that marks each word, each sign!
O enemy sly and serpentine,
Uncoil thee from the waking man!
Do I hold the Past
Thus firm and fast
Yet doubt if the Future hold I can?
This path so soft to pace shall lead
Thro’ the magic of May to herself indeed!
Or narrow if needs the house must be,
Outside are the storms and strangers: we
Oh, close, safe, warm sleep I and she, —
I and she!
My Star
All, that I know
Of a certain star
Is, it can throw
(Like the angled spar)
Now a dart of red,
Now a dart of blue
Till my friends have said
They would fain see, too,
My star that dartles the red and the blue!
Then it stops like a bird; like a flower, hangs furled:
They must solace themselves with the Saturn above it.
What matter to me if their star is a world?
Mine has opened its soul to me; therefore I love it.
You’ll Love Me Yet
You’ll love me yet!—and I can tarry
Your love’s protracted growing:
June reared that bunch of flowers you carry
From seeds of April’s sowing.
I plant a heartful now: some seed
At least is sure to strike,
And yield—what you’ll not pluck indeed,
Not love, but, may be, like!
You’ll look at least on love’s remains,
A grave’s one violet:
Your look?—that pays a thousand pains.
What’s death?—You’ll love me yet!

THE WATER IS SILENT
The fish in the water is silent,
the animal on the earth is noisy,
the bird in the air is singing.
But man has in him the silence of the sea,
the noise of the earth
and the music of the air.
Waarom, daarom
in angstige liefde.

Poem in Prose
This poem is for my wife.
I have made it plainly and honestly:
The mark is on it
Like the burl on the knife.
I have not made it for praise.
She has no more need for praise
Than summer has
Or the bright days.
In all that becomes a woman
Her words and her ways are beautiful:
Love’s lovely duty,
the well-swept room.
Wherever she is there is sun
And time and a sweet air:
Peace is there,
Work done.
There are always curtains and flowers
And candles and baked bread
And a cloth spread
And a clean house.
Her voice when she sings is a voice
At dawn by a freshening spring
Where the wave leaps in the wind
And rejoices.
Wherever she is it is now.
It is here where the apples are:
Here in the stars,
In the quick hour.
The greatest and richest good,
My own life to live in,
This she has given me —
If giver could.
Ars Poetica
A poem should be palpable and mute
As a globed fruit
Dumb
As old medallions to the thumb
Silent as the sleeve-worn stone
Of casement ledges where the moss has grown –
A poem should be wordless
As the flight of birds
A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs
Leaving, as the moon releases
Twig by twig the night-entangled trees,
Leaving, as the moon behind the winter leaves,
Memory by memory the mind –
A poem should be motionless in time
As the moon climbs
A poem should be equal to:
Not true
For all the history of grief
An empty doorway and a maple leaf
For love
The leaning grasses and two lights above the sea –
A poem should not mean
But be

Vigilien IX (Fragment)
Doch Du in mir, Du meines Hirnes ewige Gefährtin, Du meines Herzens uferlose Macht –
Du nur, Du zerlegt in tausend Flächen, Du zerstäubt in tausende Stäubchen Duftreiz –
Du in Milliarden Lichtfunken –
Du, zersiebt, zerflockt, zerfasert in tausend Stimmungen, in tausend träufelnde Gefühle –

D. Hooijer wint Libris Literatuurprijs

Moet ik me eerst waarmaken?
‘Ik moet even ontspannen.

Want álles ligt in eeuw’gen slaap bevangen,
Mijn droom, zoo zoet begroet, zoo zacht beklaagd…

In teêrheid.., Rust – o, wonder-vreemd genucht!
XXXV.
De Zee, de Zee klotst voort in eindelooze deining,
De Zee, waarin mijn Ziel zich-zelf weerspiegeld ziet;
Zij wischt zich-zelven af in eeuwige verreining,
Dan zou ik eerst gehéél en gróót gelukkig zijn;
Op menschelijke vreugd en menschelijke pijn;

“I want you to take a good look at him. I want you to take a good lazy look at Graham Blake. True, you’ll get tired of looking at him during this coming month of therapy. Some of you may get tired of having him look at you. But now’s the chance, now that there’s no pressure and you haven’t met our new patient yet, go ahead, spend some time with him at your leisure, plunge into him. Before he walks through that door and turns his considerable charms on you and you begin to entertain doubts as to whether he really requires this painful treatment I have prescribed for him.
You can see the answer by yourselves: Blake is a sick man, a man broken, delirious, needing our help more than he can divine. Just watch him pack his bags for this trip to our
Clinic. Can you recognize the symptoms? The way the fingers shake-only the index finger firm-as he smooths the shirts, discards the blue-and-white striped tie his lover’s given him for Christmas, stares at that tie for several seconds as if it were about to snake up and sting him. Remark how he retrieves it with a hand that cannot stop trembling, folds it uncertainly, can’t fit it into the bag so it won’t crumple. Look at how he waves away the valet-that’s Hector, who’s trying to be of assistance-angrily shoos him out the door, sinks onto the bed, our Graham takes his head in his hands as if it were about to roll off a cliff, those hands rubbing downward to the eyes, massaging eyes that have not slept in so many days that he’s lost count. But we haven’t. Lost count, I mean. We know it’s been ninety-five days that he hasn’t managed more than one or two hours a night, some nights nothing at all. Staying up till dawn, even knockout pills only working for a few minutes and then he’s up again, desperate drunken eyes wide open, sitting rigid for hours in the dark just like he’s sitting now, those slender pianist fingers of his scraping and stroking his temples, the headache that will not go away. Ninety-five days exactly since that headache kicked in, the everlasting midnights, his crisis, his rage at himself and everything. His doubts, his endless self-doubts.”

The inner light
In the inmost of the smallest of all spaces
runs a mute and constant play of color, inaccessible to eyes.
It is the light shut in that once in the moment of creation
was born inward and abode there, going on,
once it had broken up into the smallest of spectra
in keeping with prismatic law
at frequencies that by the sighted would be called colors
if they encountered eyes able to see.
It moved in periods
unimaginably small for time and space
but still with time and space enough for the least of the small.
In fact it found it had ample room and time.
It moved in cycles of nanoseconds and microspaces
from white light and the colors of the spectrum and back to white light.
A kind of breathing for light.
&nb
sp;
The photons breathed and pulsated with one another,
alternating signs and levels.
So the light kept going in spectral balance
from dense light to split
and back to dense light and split,
in spectral cycles infinitely repeated.
It was like a play of fans,
in keeping with the same law that holds for rainbows,
but with spread and folded fans
alternating with one another
in keeping with the law of light inscribed in them.
It was the light when it dances enclosed
when it is not traveling abroad and seen.
It belongs to the nature of light
that it can be shut in
and still not die out in its movement
that it preserves itself thus in the darkness
as thought, intent and aptitude,
that it remembers its changes
and performs its dance, its interplay.
With this art the light keeps together
the innumerable swarms of matter
and sings with light’s spectral wings
the endless song in honor of the fullness of the world.

Along the paths of echo
Along the paths of echo backwards.
There the words lie in the chest of their old meanings.
But, sad, so foreign. What is it they are saying, those lips.
They speak of different connections and conditions.
As you listen to them speaking
they form a thing that is also changed by them
spell in a language even farther removed
in still another of the chests
inside the mount of the seven chests
thousands and thousands of years before Babylon.

Bundeslied der Galgenbrüder
O schauerliche Lebenswirrn,
wir hängen hier am roten Zwirn!
Die Unke unkt, die Spinne spinnt,
und schiefe Scheitel kämmt der Wind.
O Greule, Greule, wüste Greule!
Du bist verflucht! so sagt die Eule.
Der Sterne Licht am Mond zerbricht.
Doch dich zerbrach’s noch immer nicht.
O Greule, Greule, wüste Greule!
Hört ihr den Ruf der Silbergäule?
Es schreit der Kauz: pardauz! pardauz!
da
taut’s, da graut’s, da braut’s, da blaut’s!
Der Zwölf-Elf
Der Zwölf-Elf hebt die linke Hand:
Da schlägt es Mitternacht im Land.
Es lauscht der Teich mit offnem Mund
Ganz leise heult der Schluchtenhund.
Die Dommel reckt sich auf im Rohr
Der Moosfrosch lugt aus seinem Moor.
Der Schneck horcht auf in seinem Haus
Desglelchen die Kartoffelmaus.
Das Irrlicht selbst macht Halt und Rast
auf einem windgebrochnen Ast-
Sophie, die Maid, hat ein Gesicht:
Das Mondschaf geht zum Hochgericht.
Die Galgenbrüder wehn im Wind.
Im fernen Dorfe schreit ein Kind.
Zwei Maulwürf küssen sich zur Stund
als Neuvermählte auf den Mund.
Hingegen tief im finstern Wald
ein Nachtmahr seine Fäuste ballt:
Dieweil ein später Wanderstrumpf
sich nicht verlief in Teich und Sumpf.
Der Rabe Ralf ruft schaurig: »Kra!
Das End ist da! Das End ist da!«
Der Zwölf-Elf senkt die linke Hand:
Und wieder schläft das ganze Land.

Nachtgedicht
Dich bedecken
nicht mit Küssen
nur einfach
mit deiner Decke
(die dir
von der Schulter
geglitten ist)
daß du
im Schlaf nicht frierst
Später
wenn du
erwacht bist
das Fenster zumachen
und dich umarmen
und dich bedecken
mit Küssen
und dich
entdecken
Sind wir alt
In Katzenjahren gerechnet
ist sie nicht viel älter als ich
Sie bewegt sich vorsichtig:
Vom Fensterbrett springt sie
zuerst auf den Stuhl hinunter
und dann zögernd zu Boden
Sie geht langsam zu ihrem Napf:
Jede Bewegung ein Schmerz
Ich beginne aufzustehen
um ihr Futter zu geben
Ich zucke zusammen
und muß stillstehend
einatmen
ausatmen
Richtig:
Jede Bewegung ein Schmerz
Ungewiß
Aus dem Leben
bin ich
in die Gedichte gegangen
Aus den Gedichten
bin ich
ins Leben gegangen
Welcher Weg
wird am Ende
besser gewesen sein?
