Uit: Jenseits von Afrika (Out of Africa)

Die geographische Lage und die Höhe haben vereint eine Landschaft geschaffen, die in der ganzen Welt nicht ihresglei- chen hat. Nirgends ist etwas Üppiges oder Überschwengliches;

Uit: Three plays

Toward the end of the twenties I began to lose pleasure in going to the theatre. I ceased to believe in the stories I saw presented there. When I did go it was to admire some secondary aspect of the play, the work of a great actor or director or designer. Yet at the same time the conviction was growing in me that the theatre was the greatest of all the arts. I felt that something had gone wrong with it in my time and that it was fulfilling only a small part of its potentialities. I was filled with admiration for presentations of classical works by Max Reinhardt and Louis Jouvet and the Old Vic, as I was by the best plays of my own time, like Desire Under the Elms and The Front Page; but it was with a grudging appreciation, for I didn’t believe a word of them. I was like a schoolmaster grading a paper; to each of these offerings I gave an A+, but the condition of mind of one grading a paper is not that of one being overwhelmed by an artistic creation. The response we make when we “believe” a work of the imagination is that of saying: “This is the way things are. I have always known it without being fully aware that I knew it. Now in the presence of this play or novel or poem (or picture or piece of music) I know that I know it.” It is this form of knowledge which Plato called “recollection.” We have all murdered, in thought; and been murdered. We have all seen theridiculous in estimable persons and in ourselves. We have allknown terror as well as enchantment. Imaginative literature hasnothing to say to those who do not recognize-who cannot bereminded — of such conditions. Of all the arts the theatre isbestendowed to awaken this recollection within us-to believe is tosay “yes”; but in the theatres of my time I did not feel myselfprompted to any such grateful and self-forgetting acquiescence.”

Uit: A Long Way Down

MARTIN.

Can I explain why I wanted to jump off the top of a tower block? Of course I can explain why I wanted to jump off the top of a tower block. I’m not a bloody idiot. I can explain it because it wasn’t inexplicable: it was a logical decision, the product of proper thought. It wasn’t even very serious thought, either. I don’t mean it was whimsical – I just meant that it wasn’t terribly complicated, or agonised. Put it this way: say you were, I don’t know, an assistant bank manager, in Guildford. And you’d been thinking of emigrating, and then you were offered the job of managing a bank in Sydney. Well, even though it’s a pretty straightforward decision, you’d still have to think for a bit, wouldn’t you? You’d at least have to work out whether you could bear to move, whether you could leave your friends and colleagues behind, whether you could uproot your wife and kids. You might sit down with a bit of paper and draw up a list of pros and cons. You know:

CONS – Aged parents, friends, golf club.

PROS – more money, better quality of life (house with pool, barbecue etc), sea, sunshine, no left-wing councils banning Baa-Baa Black Sheep, no EEC directives banning British sausages etc. It’s no contest, is it? The golf club! Give me a break. Obviously your aged parents give you pause for thought, but that’s all it is – a pause, and a brief one, too. You’d be on the phone to the travel agents within ten minutes.

Well, that was me. There simply weren’t enough regrets, and lots and lots of reasons to jump. The only things in my ‘cons’ list were the kids, but I couldn’t imagine Cindy letting me see them again anyway. I haven’t got any aged parents, and I don’t play golf. Suicide was my Sydney. And I say that with no offence to the good people of Sydney intended.”

Uit: Public Intellectuals

The responsibility of intellectuals includes also the recognition that we cannot live above or apart from our own time and what it imposes on us; that willy-nilly we breathe inside the cage of our generation, and must perform within it. Thinkers—whether they count as public intellectuals or the more reticent and less visible sort—are obliged above all to make distinctions, particularly in an age of mindlessly spreading moral equivalence… And political intellectuals who have the capacity, and the inclination, to reflect on fresh public issues from new perspectives are obliged to reflect on them in so careful a way that their propositions will not seem callous or morally embarrassing or downright despicable decades on.”

*There is a literature that does not reach the voracious mass. It is the work of creators, issued from a real necessity in the author, produced for himself. It expresses the knowledge of a supreme egoism, in which laws wither away. Every page must explode, either by profound heavy seriousness, the whirlwind, poetic frenzy, the new, the eternal, the crushing joke, enthusiasm for principles, or by the way in which it is printed. On the one hand a tottering world in flight, betrothed to the glockenspiel of hell, on the other hand: new men. Rough, bouncing, riding on hiccups. Behind them a crippled world and literary quacks with a mania for improvement.

I say unto you: there is no beginning and we do not tremble, we are not sentimental. We are a furious Wind, tearing the dirty linen of clouds and prayers, preparing the great spectacle of disaster, fire, decomposition.* We will put an end to mourning and replace tears by sirens screeching from one continent to another. Pavilions of intense joy and widowers with the sadness of poison. Dada is the signboard of abstraction; advertising and business are also elements of poetry.

I destroy the drawers of the brain and of social organization: spread demoralization wherever I go and cast my hand from heaven to hell, my eyes from hell to heaven, restore the fecund wheel of a universal circus to objective forces and the imagination of every individual.

Philosophy is the question: from which side shall we look at life, God, the idea or other phenomena. Everything one looks at is false. I do not consider the relative result more important than the choice between cake and cherries after dinner. The system of quickly looking at the other side of a thing in order to impose your opinion indirectly is called dialectics, in other words, haggling over the spirit of fried potatoes while dancing method around it. If I cry out:

Ideal, ideal, ideal,

·  Knowledge, knowledge, knowledge,

·  Boomboom, boomboom, boomboom,

I have given a pretty faithful version of progress, law, morality and all other fine qualities that various highly intelligent men have discussed in so manv books, only to conclude that after all everyone dances to his own personal boomboom, and that the writer is entitled to his boomboom: the satisfaction of pathological curiosity; a private bell for inexplicable needs; a bath; pecuniary difficulties; a stomach with repercussions in life; the authority of the mystic wand formulated as the bouquet of a phantom orchestra made up of silent fiddle bows greased with philtres made of chicken manure.”

Uit: ONE FAT ENGLISHMAN

Roger began eating. There was a roll-basket on the table near him, its contents hidden by a napkin. Underneath this were lengths of hot Italian bread soaked in garlic butter. He decided he would not eat this, and then suddenly found he had started to. His decision to eat only one piece went the same way. By the time the Southern fried chicken arrived from the gloved hand of the Negroe mad it was plain to him that he might as well be hung for a fat-tailed sheep as a lamb. With the chicken there were turnips, spring onions – and corn on the cob with more butter. A razor-blade embedded in a wooden handle for sclicing the cobs and a paint-brush affair for spreading the melted butter on them were passed from hand to hand. Roger used both instruments a lot.
While Ernst and Parteger, who was sitting opposite, filled him in on what terrible courses of study were available at Budweiser (College), Roger concentrated on his food. It was the least he could do for something that was bringing his coronary nearer at such a clip, that was already, he sensed, sidling irremovably into his paunch and his neck and his bosom. Let it. As he was waiting for his helping of blueberry pancakes with fresh cream and Wisconsin cheddar, the thought of dieting brushed feebly at his mind like an old remorse. He was aware that just eating a little of what he did no fancy would sooner or later do him good in the sexual chase. This idea had been brought sharply into focus at a fellow-publisher’s party the previous year. Somebody’s secretary had told him that what he wanted was all right with her on the understanding that he brought his block and tackle along. Five days later, sipping a half-cup of sugarless and milkless tea to round off a luncheon of a lightly boiled egg with no salt, a decarbohydrated roll resembling fluff in plastic, and a small apple, he had made up his mind for ever that, if it came to it, he could easily settle down to a regime of banquets and self-abuse. He sent his palte up now for a second helping of pancakes and put three chocolate mints into his mouth to tide him over. Outside every fat man there was an even fatter man trying to close in.
With the Gaelic coffee, surmounted by half an inch or so of chilled cream, he felt his survival till breakfast guaranteed and ceremoniously produced for him by Joe.”

What kind of pencil shall I use?

Eurolove

I cannot
and I will not
No, I cannot love you less
Like the flower to the butterfly
The corsage to the dress

She turns my love to dust
my destination empty
my beliefs scattered: Diaspora!

Who set this course – and why?
Now my wings beat –
without purpose
Yet they speed…

Indian Boyhood

What happened to the boy I was?
Why did he run away?
And leave me old and thinking, like
There’d been no yesterday?
What happened then?
Was I that boy?
Who laughed and swam in the bund*
I there no going back?
No recompense?
Is there nothing?
No refund?

In Kerry

WE heard the thrushes by the shore and sea,

And saw the golden star’s nativity,

Then round we went the lane by Thomas Flynn,

Across the church where bones lie out and in;

And there I asked beneath a lonely cloud

Of strange delight, with one bird singing loud,

What change you’d wrought in graveyard, rock and sea,

This new wild paradise to wake for me. . . .

Yet knew no more than knew those merry sins

Had built this stack of thigh-bones, jaws and shins.

Uit: Satyr Chorus

For some time now, Petersburg has been shaded for me in a greenish color, glimmering and glinting, a ghastly color, phosphorescent. Snaky and snickering, a greenish flame quivers on buildings, on faces, and in souls. A flame will flicker–and it’s not Pyotr Petrovich before you, but a gluey reptile. A flame will shoot up–and you yourself are worse than a reptile. And it isn’t people walking down the streets: you glance under a hat–it’s the head of a snake; you peer at an old lady–a toad squats, bloating its stomach. And there are young people, each with a particular dream: an engineer just has to hear Hawaiian music, a student–for a bit more effect, to hang himself, a schoolboy–to father a child, to prove his virility. You find yourself in a store–a former general stands at the counter and wears a drilled smile; you go into a museum–the guide knows he’s lying, and continues to lie. I don’t like Petersburg. My dream is over.

 Prologue

PRODUCED BY AN AUTHOR WHO HAS APPEARED

I
N THE MIDDLE OF A BOOK

Now, there is no Petersburg. There is Leningrad. But Leningrad doesn’t concern us–the author is a coffin-maker by profession, not a master of the cradle business. Show him a little coffin–he’ll give it a knock and find out what material it’s made of, how long ago, by which master, and even recall the parents of the deceased. As you can see right now, the author’s preparing a little coffin for the twenty-seven years of his life. He’s terribly busy. But don’t think he’s preparing the coffin with some kind of purpose, he simply has that sort of passion. He picks up his nose–there’s the whiff of a corpse; so, then, it needs a coffin. And he loves his deceased ones, and walks behind them even while they’re alive, and shakes their little hands, and starts talking, and casually stocks up on boards, shops for nails, and gets hold of some lace when there’s a chance.”

Uit: A Prisoner of Birth

“Yes,” said Beth.
She tried to look surprised, but wasn’t all that convincing as she had already decided that they were going to be married when they were at secondary school. However, she was amazed when Danny fell on one knee in the middle of the crowded restaurant.
“Yes,” Beth repeated, hoping he’d stand up before everyone in the room stopped eating and turned to stare at them. But he didn’t budge. Danny remained on one knee, and like a conjurer, produced a tiny box from nowhere. He opened it to reveal a simple gold band boasting a single diamond that was far larger than Beth had expected—although her brother had already told her that Danny had spent two months’ wages on the ring.
When Danny finally got off his knee, he took her by surprise again. He immediately began to tap a number on his mobile. Beth knew only too well who would be on the other end of the line.
“She said yes!” Danny announced triumphantly. Beth smiled as she held the diamond under the light and took a closer look. “Why don’t you join us?” Danny added before she could stop him. “Great, let’s meet at that wine bar off the Fulham Road—the one we went to after the Chelsea game last year. See you there, mate.”
Beth didn’t protest; after all, Bernie was not only her brother, but Danny’s oldest friend, and he’d probably already asked him to be his best man.
Danny turned off his phone and asked a passing waiter for the bill. The maître d’ bustled across.
“It’s on the house,” he said, giving them a warm smile.
It was to be a night of surprises.
When Beth and Danny strolled into the Dunlop Arms, they found Bernie seated at a corner table with a bottle of champagne and three glasses by his side.
“Fantastic news,” he said even before they had sat down.
“Thanks, mate,” said Danny, shaking hands with his friend.
“I’ve already phoned Mum and Dad,” said Bernie as he popped the cork and filled the three champagne glasses. “They didn’t seem all that surprised, but then it was the worst-kept secret in Bow.”
“Don’t tell me they’ll be joining us as well,” said Beth.
“Not a chance,” said Bernie raising his glass. “You’ve only got me this time. To long life and West Ham winning the cup.”
“Well, at least one of those is possible,” said Danny.”

Schein und Sein

Mein Kind, es sind allhier die Dinge,
Gleichwohl, ob große, ob geringe,
Im wesentlichen so verpackt,
Daß man sie nicht wie Nüsse knackt.

Wie wolltest du dich unterwinden,
Kurzweg die Menschen zu ergründen.
Du kennst sie nur von außenwärts.
Du siehst die Weste, nicht das Herz.

Doppelte Freude

Ein Herr warf einem Bettelmann
Fünf Groschen in den Felber.
Das tat dem andern wohl, und dann
Tat es auch wohl ihm selber.

Der eine, weil er gar so gut,
Kann sich von Herzen loben;
Der andre trinkt sich frischen Mut
Und fühlt sich auch gehoben.

Zwei Jungfern

During a portion of the first half of the present century, and more particularly during the latter part of it, there flourished and practiced in the city of New York a physician who enjoyed perhaps an exceptional share of the consideration which, in the United States, has always been bestowed upon distinguished members of the medical profession. This profession in America has constantly been held in honor, and more successfully than elsewhere has put forward a claim to the epithet of ‘liberal.’ In a country in which, to play a social part, you must either earn your income or make believe that you earn it, the healing art has appeared in a high degree to combine two recognized sources of credit. It belongs to the realm of the practical, which in the United States is a great recommendation; and it is touched by the light of science–a merit appreciated in a community in which the love of knowledge has not always been accompanied by leisure and opportunity.

It was an element in Doctor Sloper’s reputation that his learning and his skill were very evenly balanced; he was what you might call a scholarly doctor, and yet there was nothing abstract in his remedies–he always ordered you to take something. Though he was felt to be extremely thorough, he was not uncomfortably theoretic; and if he sometimes explained matters rather more minutely than might seem of use to the patient, he never went so far (like some practitioners one had heard of) as to trust to the explanation alone, but always left behind him an inscrutable prescription. There were some doctors that left the prescription without offering any explanation at all; and he did not belong to that class either, which was after all the most vulgar. It will be seen that I am describing a clever man; and this is really the reason why Doctor Sloper had become a local celebrity.”

Rivers of Canada

O all the little rivers that run to Hudson’s Bay,
They call me and call me to follow them away.

Missinaibi, Abitibi, Little Current–where they run
Dancing and sparkling I see them in the sun.

I hear the brawling rapid, the thunder of the fall,
And when I think upon them I cannot stay at all.

At the far end of the carry, where the wilderness begins,
Set me down with my canoe-load–and forgiveness of my sins.

O all the mighty rivers beneath the Polar Star,
They call me and call me to follow them afar.

Peace and Athabasca and Coppermine and Slave,
And Yukon and Mackenzie–the highroads of the brave.

Saskatchewan, Assiniboine, the Bow and the Qu’Appelle,
And many a prairie river whose name is like a spell.

They rumor through the twilight at the edge of the unknown,
“There’s a message waiting for you, and a kingdom all your own.

“The wilderness shall feed you, her gleam shall be your guide.
Come out from desolations, our path of hope is wide.”

O all the headlong rivers that hurry to the West,
They call me and lure me with the joy of their unrest.

Columbia and Fraser and Bear and Kootenay,
I love their fearless reaches where winds untarnished play–

The rush of glacial water across the pebbly bar
To polished pools of azure where the hidden boulders are.

Just there, with heaven smiling, any morning I would be,
Where all the silver rivers go racing to the sea.

O well remembered rivers that sing of long ago,
Ajourneying through summer or dreaming under snow.

Among their meadow islands through placid days they glide,
And where the peaceful orchards are diked against the tide.

Tobique and Madawaska and shining Gaspereaux,
St. Croix and Nashwaak and St. John whose haunts I used to know.

And all the pleasant rivers that seek the Fundy foam,
They call me and call me to follow them home.

in hooploos nietsdoen.

mijn armen slap neerhangend nevens mij,

Not so after the elections ! Ah! So you’re back, are you!, and those cute little starry eyes of hers flashed like the very devil. They lay sprawling over this country for forty years. And these assholes went and voted for them! I keep mum. I’d rather not say that these assholes are us, the country. I didn’t vote for them, and don’t you go saying it, even as a joke, and if you voted for them in secret, I’m going to kill you. What a sweetheart. I don’t even try to calm her down, I wouldn’t dream of it: memories of Tuscany. Why, they can’t even speak the language properly, she screeches. Inside me, everything is stretched tight as a bow, that’s how close I feel to her. They robbed us blind, and now they’re playing Mr Clean! They crippled this nation, and now they’re shooting their mouths off. I turn white, my hands tremble, and I hear the beating of my heart. Trade union lobbyists!, and she squeezes my balls, but with so much feeling, passion and oomph, it would suffice to rebuild the nation.”

Uit: The Unnamable: A Novel

They say I suffer, perhaps they’re right, and that I’d feel better if I did this, said that, if my body stirred, if my head understood, if they went silent and departed, perhaps they’re right, how would I know about these things, how would I understand what they’re talking about, I’ll never stir, never speak, they’ll never go silent, never depart, they’ll never catch me, never stop trying, that’s that, I’m listening. Well I prefer that, I must say I prefer that, that what, oh you know, who you, oh I suppose the audience, well well, so there’s an audience, it’s a public show, you buy your seat and wait, perhaps it’s free, a free show, you take your seat and you wait for it to begin, or perhaps it’s compulsory, a compulsory show, you wait for the compulsory show to begin, it takes time, you hear a voice, perhaps it’s a recitation, that’s the show, someone reciting, selected passages, old favourites, a poetry matinée, or someone improvising, you can barely hear him, that’s the show, you can’t leave, you’re afraid to leave, it might be worse elsewhere, you make the best of it, you try and be reasonable, you came too early, here we’d need Latin, it’s only beginning, it hasn’t begun, he’s only preluding, clearing his throat, alone in his dressing-room, he’ll appear any moment, he’ll begin any moment, or it’s the stage-manager, giving his instructions, his last recommendations, before the curtain rises, that’s the show, waiting for the show.”

ALL OF A SUDDEN

Everything happened all of a sudden.

All of a sudden daylight beat down on the earth;

There was the sky all of a sudden;

All of a sudden steam began to rise from the soil.

There were tendrils all of a sudden, buds all of a sudden.

And there were fruits all of a sudden.

All of a sudden,

All of a sudden,

Girls all of a sudden, boys all of a sudden.

Roads, moors, cats, people…

And there was love all of a sudden,

Happiness all of a sudden.

AS DEATH APPROACHES

Toward the coming on of evening, in winter time,

At the window of a sick man’s bedroom-

I’m not the only one to be so alone;

It’s dark on the sea, the sky is dark, too.

Funny, how the birds are behaving tonight!

Don’t mind that I’m poor, that I’m alone in the world;

-Toward the coming on of evening in winter time-

I too in my time have had my love affairs.

To be famous, to have women, to make money-

In time one gets to know the world as it is.

Is it because we’re to die that we have these regrets?

What were we, what happened to us in this world,

In this mortal old world, except evil?

We shall be rid of our dirt at our death,

With death we’ll get to be good men at last.

Being famous, having women, making money, and all-

We’ll forget all that when we die.

SADNESS

I might have got angry

With those I love

If love

Hadn’t taught me

To be sad.

Exposure

It is December in Wicklow:
Alders dripping, birches
Inheriting the last light,
The ash tree cold to look at.

A comet that was lost
Should be visible at sunset,
Those million tons of light
Like a glimmer of haws and rose-hips,

And I sometimes see a falling star.
If I could come on meteorite!
Instead I walk through damp leaves,
Husks, the spent flukes of autumn,

Imagining a hero
On some muddy compound,
His gift like a slingstone
Whirled for the desperate.

How did I end up like this?
I often think of my friends’
Beautiful prismatic counselling
And the anvil brains of some who hate me

As I sit weighing and weighing
My responsible tristia.
For what? For the ear? For the people?
For what is said behind-backs?

Rain comes down through the alders,
Its low conductive voices
Mutter about let-downs and erosions
And yet each drop recalls

The diamond absolutes.
I am neither internee nor informer;
An inner émigré, grown long-haired
And thoughtful; a wood-kerne

Escaped from the massacre,
Taking protective colouring
From bole and bark, feeling
Every wind that blows;

Who, blowing up these sparks
For their meagre heat, have missed
The once-in-a-lifetime portent,
The comet’s pulsing rose.

Rite of Spring

So winter closed its fist
And got it stuck in the pump.
The plunger froze up a lump

In its throat, ice founding itself
Upon iron. The handle
Paralysed at an angle.

Then the twisting of wheat straw
into ropes, lapping them tight
Round stem and snout, then a light

That sent the pump up in a flame
It cooled, we lifted her latch,
Her entrance was wet, and she came.

Lovers on Aran

The timeless waves, bright, sifting, broken glass,
Came dazzling around, into the rocks,
Came glinting, sifting from the Americas

To posess Aran. Or did Aran rush
to throw wide arms of rock around a tide
That yielded with an ebb, with a soft crash?

Did sea define the land or land the sea?
Each drew new meaning from the waves’ collision.
Sea broke on land to full identity.

“Arthur Raven, his lawyer, was determined not to worry. After all, Arthur reasoned, he was not even a volunteer. Instead, he’d been drafted by the federal appellate court to ensure that after ten years of litigation, no sound arguments remained to save Rommy Gandolph’s life. Worrying was not part of the job.

He was worried anyway.

“I’m sorry?” asked Pamela Towns, his young associate, from the passenger’s seat. A gurgle of anguish had escaped Arthur as he had come, once again, face-to-face with himself.

“Nothing,” said Arthur. “I just hate being the designated loser.”

“Then we shouldn’t lose.” Pamela, with rosy good looks fit for TV news, flashed a bright coast-to-coast grin.

They were far from the city now, doing eighty on cruise control in Arthur’s new German sedan. In these parts, the road was so flat and straight, he did not even have to touch the wheel. The prairie farmlands raced by, corn stubble and loam, silent and eternal in the wan light of morning. They had left Center City at seven to beat the traffic. Arthur hoped to hold a brief introductory meeting with their new client, Rommy Gandolph, at the state penitentiary at Rudyard and to be back at his desk by two o’clock — or three, if be decided to risk asking Pamela to lunch. He remained intensely conscious of the young woman nearby, of the tawny hair falling softly on her shoulders and of the hand that crept to her thigh every several miles to retract the hiking of her tartan skirt.

Eager as he was to please her, Arthur could offer little hope for the case.

“At this stage,” he said, “under the law, the only thing that could possibly amount to reversible error would be new evidence of actual
innocence. And we’re not going to find that.”

JOHN CLARK HAD MORE TIME IN AIRPLANES THAN most licensed pilots, and he knew the statistics as well as any of them, but he still didn’t like the idea of crossing the ocean on a twin-engine airliner. Four was the right number of engines, he thought, because losing one meant losing only 25 percent of the aircraft’s available power, whereas on this United 777, it meant losing half. Maybe the presence of his wife, one daughter, and a son-in-law made him a little itchier than usual. No, that wasn’t right. He wasn’t itchy at all, not about flying anyway. It was just a lingering . . . what? he asked himself. Ne
xt to him, in the window seat Sandy was immersed in the mystery she’d started the day before, while he was trying to concentrate on the current issue of The Economist, and wondering what was putting the cold-air feeling on the back of his neck. He started to look around the cabin for a sign of danger but abruptly stopped himself. There wasn’t anything wrong that he could see, and he didn’t want to seem like a nervous flyer to the cabin crew. He sipped at his glass of white wine, shook his shoulders, and went back to the article on how peaceful the new world was.

Right. He grimaced. Well, yes, he had to admit that things were a hell of a lot better than they’d been for nearly all of his life. No more swimming out of a submarine to do a collection on a Russian beach, or flying into Tehran to do something the Iranians wouldn’t like much, or swimming up a fetid river in North Vietnam to rescue a downed aviator. Someday maybe Bob Holtzman would talk him into a book on his career. Problem was; who’d believe it-and would CIA ever allow him to tell his tales except on his own deathbed? He was not in a hurry for that, not with a grandchild on the way. Damn. He grimaced, unwilling to contemplate that development. Patsy must have caught a silver bullet on their wedding night, and Ding glowed more about it than she did. John looked back to business class-the curtain wasn’t in place yet-and there they were, holding hands while the stewardess did the safety lecture. If the airplane hit the water at 400 knots, reach under your seat for the life-preserver and inflate it by pulling . . . he’d heard that one before. The bright yellow life-jackets would make it somewhat easier for search aircraft to find the crash site, and that was about all they were good for.”

Uit: Ian Watson, ‘Conversations With Ayckbourn’

“It was about a family – it sounds terribly banal – about a husband, his wife, his son and his daughter. The mother has got an obsession with a pop singer. She’s fallen in love with him from a distance, thinks he’s wonderful and swoony. She therefore rents a house in the country – (a little Anouilh coming out there: there were a lot of definite influences in this play. In fact it’s Dinner With The Family, I now realise!) – in order to invite the pop singer down for a marvellous weekend with her. And she was going to pretend to be someone totally different; have no family, and be a rich woman – she’d arranged it all. The family, having got wise to this, followed her down.
“I don’t quite know why he comes, but anyway he agrees to come, we find out later. The family has followed her down and is not going to let mother get away as easily as that. They say: ‘All right, let him come.’ She’s very cross and says: ‘No, you’ve spoiled the whole thing.’ He turns up – that’s me – and of course he’s not at all the glittering figure of the silver screen, but shy and bespectacled and wanting a quiet time – and this he thought was it. And he’s horrified to see that mother is a sort of elderly groupie. The family roars with merriment saying: ‘Look, you see, look at your hero. He’s really nothing very much.’ At which point he bounds out and comes back again in glitter costume, twanging his guitar, saying: ‘OK, this is war’ – or words to that effect (I can’t remember much of the plot). He gets together with the daughter eventually, and romance blossoms there. Mother finds the error of her ways and goes back to her husband. Jerry Wattis finds true love with the simple girl, and all fades into the sunset. I don’t think it was very good as a play, looking back on it, but it was OK for a first one. It’s not one that one would ever want to see done again.”

Uit: POVERTY IS NO CRIME

KORSHUNOV: What are you crying about, young lady? For shame, for shame! He, he, he! There! I’m older than you, and I don’t cry. [Looks at her searchingly.] Oh, well, I know what it’s about! I suppose you want to marry a young fellow? Now, this, my pretty one, is just girlish folly. Now, just listen to what I’m going to tell you; I’ll tell you the truth straight out. I don’t like to deceive any one, and have no need to. Will you listen, eh? Good! Now, we’ll begin with this point. Will a young man appreciate your love? Any girl will love a young man; that is nothing unusual for him; but to an old man it is precious. An old man will reward you for your love with some little gift, this and that–with gold, and with velvet–and there’s nothing he won’t give you. And in Moscow there are lots of nice things in the shops; there are things worth giving! So it’s nice to fall in love with an old man. That’s number one for you! And then this is what happens with a young and good-looking husband. You see they are a fickle lot! Before you know it he will be running after some one else, or some young lady will fall in love with him, and then his wife may pine away. Then come reproaches and jealousy. And what is this jealousy, eh? He, he, he! Do you know, young lady, what this jealousy is? It isn’t like a needle prick in the finger; it’s far more painful than that. You see the cursed thing consumes a man. From jealousy people stab one another, and poison one another with arsenic! [Laughs spasmodically and coughs.] But when any one falls in love with an old man, then all is peaceful for his wife. And here’s something else I will tell you, my dear young lady: Young men like to go on sprees; they like gayety and distraction, and all sorts of dissipations, and their wives may sit at home and wait for them till midnight. And they come home drunk, and bully their wives, and swagger. But an old man will just sit near his wife; he’ll die before he’ll leave her. And he would like to look into her eyes all the time and to caress her and to kiss her hands. [Kisses them.] Just like that.

Zonder mij

Verlaten straten komen samen, gaan uiteen

Nu jij me hier ziet zitten, vindende verlorenheid

Onze leeftijd zonder beroep, onze naam zonder adres –

Uit: Poetry in the World

I usually have no idea what I will say before I begin to write. This is especially true with poems, and only slightly less so with lectures or essays. I write to find out what I have to say—not what I have to say about a given subject, but simply what I have to say. Not that I find a prescribed subject too limiting, it’s just that to address a particular subject might cast me in the role of an expert, which is preposterous. And yet, as it happens, I am sometimes given not just a subject for the lecture I must deliver, but a title as well. I was for this evening’s, and I welcomed it—it seemed grand, even uplifting. “Humanities and the Public Sphere.” “Ah yes!” I thought, “a fitting topic.” But after struggling around for a few days, trying to think of what I might say, and how I might say it, I decided to change the title. I wanted one that would fall in line—almost magically—with what I might say. After all, I no longer knew what the humanities were, even though the changes that have taken place in that area of study over the past half-century have been well documented and tirelessly speculated on; and I didn’t really grasp the notion of “public sphere,” which, though a phrase commonly used, struck me as excessively abstract. So I came up with the less weighty “Poetry in the World.” Although using “world” in the title did make me think—to be poetic for a moment—that I had bitten off more than I could possibly chew.”

Gedichten eten

Inkt druipt langs mijn mondhoeken.
Niemand is zo gelukkig als ik.
Ik heb gedichten gegeten.

De bibliothecaresse gelooft niet wat ze ziet.
Haar ogen staan bedroefd

What Will Become of Him…

What will become of him, whoever
has got no handle to his hoe,
upon whose whiskers crumbs don’t quiver,
who dawdles, gloomy, thrawn, and slow;
who would from half a furlong’s hoeing
keep one potato out of three,
whose hair falls out in patches, growing
bald unnoticed – who’d care to see?

What will become of him, whoever
has but five acres under crops,
whose draggled hen clucks at the stover,
whose thoughts nest in a mudhole’s slops;
when no yoke clinks, no oxen bellow;
when mother serves the family soup
and steam from a liquid weak and yellow
drifts from the bottom of the scoop?

What will become of him, whoever
must live alone and work alone;
whose stew has neither salt nor savour,
the grocer gives no tick nor loan;
who has one broken chair for kindling,
cat sitting on the cracked stove’s shelf;
who sets his keychain swinging, jingling,
who stares, stares; lies down by himself?

What will become of him, whoever
works to support his family;
the cabbage-heart they quarrel over,
the film the big girl gets to see;
always the laundry – dirt’s slow strangling –
the wife’s mouth tastes of vegetables,
and when the light’s off, silent wrangling,
gropings, eavesdroppings, darkness, rules?

What will become of him, whoever
idles outside the factory,
a woman meanwhile hauls the lever,
a pale-skulled child sets the fusee;
when through the gates he gazes vainly,
vainly humps bags and market-creels –
he dozes, they rouse him inhumanely,
and always catch him when he steals?

What will become of him, whoever
weighs out potatoes, salt, and bread,
wraps them in newsprint’s inky flavour,
and doesn’t brush the scales he’s read;
and in the gloom he dusts, complaining,
the rent is high, the tax is keen,
the price – but what’s the use explaining
the extra charge for kerosene?

And what will come of him, whoever
knows he’s a poet, sings his fears,
whose wife mops up the floor forever,
who chases copy-work for years;
whose name’s a brand-name, if he has one,
just like a soap or cooking-fat,
whose life is given, if he has one,
all to the proletariat?

The Scream

Love me wildly, to distraction,
scare away my huge affliction,
in the cage of an abstraction,
I, an ape, jump up and down,
bare my teeth in malediction,
for I have no faith or fiction,
in the terror of His frown.

Mortal, do you hear my singing,
or mere nature’s echoes ringing?
Hug me, don’t just stare unseeing
as the sharpened knife comes down –
there’s no guardian that’s undying
who will hear my song and sighing:
in the terror of His frown.

As a raft upon a river,
Slovak raftman, whosoever,
so the human race forever
dumb with pain, goes drifting down –
but I scream in vain endeavour:
love me: I’ll be good, I shiver
in the terror of His frown.

BABYLON

Sag, hast du Babylon gekannt,
Das Löwentor, die Wappenwand,
Den Himmel, hell und morgenweit?
Dort leg den Stab aus deiner Hand,
Dort kehrst du ein, vom Traum gebannt,
Am Ausgang jeder Ewigkeit.

Dort bist du Schweifender zuhaus
Im Wortgewirr, im Labyrinth.
Die Schwalben fliegen ein und aus,
Geheime Kunde weiß der Wind.

Ein Sperber, Spender dunklen Lichts,
Erbarmt sich deiner Ungeduld,
Versinkst du, starren Angesichts,
In seines Fittichs grauer Huld.

Du hast kein neues Reich entfacht,
Hast nur, geneigt ins Niezurück,
Uraltes endlich heimgebracht:
Den Abgesang, das Ernteglück,
Die letzten Flüge vor der Nacht.

Nun holt dich keine Zeit mehr ein,
Was jemals werden kann, verging,
Was morgen war, wird gestern sein,
Beginn und Ende schließt der Ring.

Fern aller Bitte, allem Ruf,
Tritt vor, nimm dein verheißnes Los.
Blind war der Gott, der dich erschuf,
Blind kehrst du heim in seinen Schoß.

Sag, hast du Babylon gekannt,
Den Regenbogen, weit gespannt,
Verschwistert allem Einst und Je?
Die Morgenhimmel sind verbrannt,
Von morschen Schwingen stäubt der Sand,
Und Schnee wird sein, viel Schnee.

Krystallen sich erblickt, wächst der Polyp
Zur Hyder, daß die Pythische Sibylle
In Hieroglyphen sich und Hymnen üb.

Hyperborea grünt, es fügt der Skythe
Den Zweig zur Zwille: Hütet Yggdrasil
Walkyren androgyn, blüht aus der Mythe
Der Thyrsos wie aus Krypten das Reptil.

Syrinx ertönt im Rauschen der Charybden,
Der Python paart im innersten Ägypten
Des Goldes Glanz der Schwärze des Onyx.

Entbietet Sphinx im Spiegel amethysten
Asyl, bis der Olymp sinkt im Styx.

Gedicht

ich nenne mich du weil der Abstand

so vergeht zwischen uns wie Haut

an Haut wir sind nicht

zu unterscheiden zu trennen eins

und das Andere die Grenze ist

die Verletzung der Übergang

eine offene Wunde du nennst mich

ich wer von uns beiden sagt

hier hast du ein Messer

mach meinen Schnitt.

guten tag

immer hinterher im regen stehen
gelassen bleiben als ob gehen
die frage sei: dahingestellt
& was aus allen wolken fällt

mir zu betrifft mich offenherzig
verheult verlacht den rest verschmerz ich
vergeh verkomme auf dich zu
entferne mich was bleibt bist du

bei trost bei dir beizeiten
JUST TRAVELLIN‘ es kommt nicht an
auf sprüche soviel ist versprochen

und haltlos was ich sagen kann
verstummt verspielt zwischen uns beiden
der regen naß bis auf die knochen

Rondeau Allemagne

Zwischen den Himmeln. Sehe jeder, wo er bleibt;

mijn hete hand uit dit papier niet steken;

Kom, leg Uw hand op dit papier; mijn huid;

kijken in Uw lezende gezicht

zij kunnen zich hun naaktheid niet vergeven;

Terug !

Vermagerde vliegen, dode torren

zouden blijven haken in hun haren.

Tandestokers, steelsgewijs-ontsproten,

zouden zwellen tot gedraaide tafelpoten,

katoenen knoppen zouden openscheuren

Uit: The Elephanta Suite

Tough question,” Audie said. “This time of year we’re usually in our house in Florida. We’ve got an apartment in New York. We mostly spend our summers in Maine. We’ve got a condo in Vermont, ski country. Take your pick.”

But the woman wasn’t listening to him. She was talking about her daughter, who lived in New York City and was now twenty-seven and a little overdue to be married. They — mother and father — were in India to meet the parents of a boy they hoped would be a suitable husband. The boy happened to be living in Rochester, New York, where he taught engineering.

“Arranged marriage,” she said. “Best way.”

She seemed to be twinkling with defiance, challenging Audie to question her adherence to the custom of arranged
marriage. He enjoyed hearing her overselling it.

“Rupesh and I were arranged by our parents. Americans find it so funny.” She shrieked a little and wobbled her head. “I didn’t know his name. Only his horoscope. He was almost stranger to me. Almost thirty years together now!”

While insisting on her approval of the custom of arranged marriage, she was also presenting herself as an antique, if not an oddity, and wished to be celebrated that way. She lived in the USA; she had shocked her American friends with this sort of talk and was defying Audie to be shocked. But Audie decided to defy her in return by smiling at her.

“Beth was a stranger to me when we met, too,” he said. “Picked her up in a bar.”

He overheard the Indian man — Bill? Rupesh? — say, “vas vesting away” and “his own urine” — and he turned away from the man’s disappointed wife.

“My father,” the man said, glad for another listener. “He was in intensive care at Georgetown Medical Center. They said they couldn’t do any more for his condition, which was inoperable cancer of pancreas. ‘He will be more comfortable at home.’ They were abandoning him, no question. He was wasting. As last resort we saw a yogi. He prescribed the urine cure. My father was instructed to drink a beaker of his own urine first thing in morning. He did so. After a week he grew stronger. Appetite came back. Hunger was there. Thirst was there. Second week, my God, he began to put on weight. Skin better, head clear. Third week he was walking a bit. Balance was there. Two months of this, drinking urine, and body was clear. Doctor said, ‘Miracle.'”

Uit: On poetry

The remarks which have been here made, would, in some measure, lead to a solution of the question of the comparative merits of painting and poetry. I do not mean to give any preference, but it should seem that the argument which has been sometimes set up, that painting must affect the imagination more strongly, because it represents the image more distinctly, is not well founded. We may assume without much temerity, that poetry is more poetical than painting. When artists or connoisseurs talk on stilts about the poetry of painting, they show that they know little about poetry, and have little love for the art. Painting gives the object itself; poetry what it implies, Painting embodies what a thing contains in itself: poetry suggests what exists out of it, in any manner connected with it. But this last is the proper province of the imagination. Again, as it relates to passion, painting gives the event poetry the progress of events: but it is during the progress, in the interval of expectation and suspense, while our hopes and fears am strained to the highest pitch of breathless agony, that the pinch of the interest lies.

Between the acting of a dreadful thing
And the first motion, all the interim is
Like a phantasma or a hideous dream.
The mortal instruments are then in council;
And the state of man, like to a little kingdom,
Suffers then the nature of an insurrection.

But by the time that the picture is painted, all is over. Faces are the best part of a picture; but even faces are not what we chiefly remember in what interests us most, — But it may be asked then, Is there anything better than Claude Lorraine’s landscapes, than Titian’s portraits, Raphael’s cartoons, or the Greek statues? Of the two first I shall say nothing, as they are evidently picturesque, rather than imaginative. Raphael’s cartoons are certainly the finest comments that ever were made on the Scriptures. Would their effect be the same if we were acquainted with the text? But the New Testament existed before the cartoons. There is one subject of which there is no cartoon, Christ washing the feet of the disciples the night before his death. But that chapter does not need a commentary! It is for want of some such resting place for the imagination that the Greek statues are little else than specious forms. They are marble to the touch and to the heart. They have not an informing principle within them. In their faultless excellence they appear sufficient to themselves. By their beauty they are raised above the frailties of passion or suffering. By their beauty they are deified. But they are not objects of religious faith to us, and their forms are a reproach to common humanity. They seem to have no sympathy with us, and not to want our admiration.”

Je trône dans l’azur comme un sphinx incompris;
J’unis un coeur de neige à la blancheur des cygnes;

Consumeront leurs jours en d’austères études;

Où nagent dans la nuit l’horreur et le blasphème;

Et les six autres mois la nuit couvre la terre;
— Ni bêtes, ni ruisseaux, ni verdure, ni bois!

Et cette immense nuit semblable au vieux Chaos;

Reste comme pendue à mes rimes hautaines;

“All of it. I had all of it, and more. Jesus, the tales I could tell – not that anyone would believe me because they wouldn’t be about how great it all was and what fascinating and worthwhile people boy-bands, pop-whores and rock musicians are. Or MP’s, newscasters, actors and celebrity chefs either, for that matter. Those stories wouldn’t tow the party line, boost the media profile, you see. Ha! Christ, far from it – like, remember that MP, the one who was on the box all the time saying how Britain should return to a state of decency and Christian principles? Him with the blond hair and fat red face? Yeah – you know. I once saw him at a party stark naked on all fours on a dining table, coked off his tits, eating – well, yeah, not the entrées anyway. People were cheering him on while they shook bottles of Moet up and sprayed him and his – dinner – with them. Cool, eh? Right.

But I won’t name the names. Why should I? Call it a point of honour. I didn’t tell then and I won’t now. The likes of that tosser get theirs one way or another without my help. I’m no kiss-and-tell-whore, whatever else I may be.

Jesus, it’s so cold here, freezing, I’m freezing. I’ve run out of oil for the heaters and it’s coming winter in earnest out here. The van’s dead, too, battery or something – what do I know about cars? Shag all, as it goes. I should have got Evan out to fix it but it didn’t seem urgent two days ago. Two days, is it only two days? I ought to phone him, I should phone Evan, he’d help me, he likes me even though I’m English but I – I can’t seem to – I don’t know. I think this is it. Last night was – I can’t think about it, I can’t. What have I done? God in heaven, what have I done? I thought I was right, you know? I was so convinced I was right, I thought I was doing the decent thing, being stand-up, a real heroine. But it’s such a mess, such a fucking mess.”

Sprache

Der Baum
größer als die Nacht
mit dem Atem der Talseen
mit dem Geflüster über
der Stille

Die Steine
unter dem Fuß
die leuchtenden Adern
lange im Staub
für ewig

Sprache
abgehetzt
mit dem müden Mund
auf dem endlosen Weg
zum Hause des Nachbarn.

Entfremdung

Zeit
geht umher
in Kleidern
aus Glück
und Unglück.

Der im Unglück

spricht mit der Klapperstimme

der Störche, die Störche

meiden ihn: sein Gefieder

schwarz, seine Bäume schatten,

da ist Nacht, seine Wege

gehn in der Luft.

An Klopstock

Wenn ich das Wirkliche nicht
wollte, dieses: ich sag
Strom und Wald,
ich hab in die Sinne aber
gebunden die Finsternis,
Stimme des eilenden Vogels, den Pfeilstoß
Licht um den Abhang

und die tönenden Wasser –
wie wollt ich
sagen deinen Namen,
wenn mich ein kleiner Ruhm
fände – ich hab
aufgehoben, dran ich vorüberging,
Schattenfabel von den Verschuldungen
und der Sühnung:
so als den Taten
trau ich – du führest sie – trau ich
der Vergeßlichen Sprache,
sag ich hinab in die Winter
ungeflügelt, aus Röhricht
ihr Wort.

Uit: Komm, gehen wir
