POLAROIDS

Since landscape’s insoluble,
Then loath at last light I leave the landfall, soft and gone.
Or it leaves me.
I’ve got a tune in my head I can’t let go,
Unlike the landscape, heavy and wan,
Sunk like a stone in the growing night,
Snuffed in the heart like a candle flame that won’t come back.

Our world is of little moment, of course, but it is our world.
Thus it behooves us to contemplate,
from time to time,
The weight of glory we should wish reset in our hearts,
About the things which are seen,
and things which are not seen,
That corresponds like to like,
The stone to the dark of the earth, the flame to the star.

_____

Those without stories are preordained to repeat them,
I saw once in the stars.
Unclear who underwrote that,
But since then I’ve seen it everywhere
I’ve looked, staggering
Noon light and night’s meridian wandering wide and the single sky.
And here it is in the meadow grass, a brutish script.

We tend to repeat what we don’t know
Instead of the other way around—
thus mojo, thus misericordia,
Old cross-work and signature, the catechism in the wind.
We tend to repeat what hurts us, things, and ghosts of things,
The actual green of summer, and summer’s half-truth.
We tend to repeat ourselves.

_____

One longs for order and permanence,
An order as in the night sky just north of Mt. Caribou,
Permanence like the seasons,
coming in, going out,
Watchman and wanderer. There’s been no cure, however, and no
Ecstasy in transcendent form, so
Don’t look for me here, incipient, now, in the artifice.

Florence is much on my mind, gold leaf and golden frame,
Infinite background of the masters—
Mayfire of green in the hills,
watchtower and Belvedere,
The Arno, as Dino said, like a dithering snake,
Sad swipe of forgetfulness.
Last chance, a various universe.

_____

A few more rising and setting suns.
Always the spike of the purple lupin, always the folded hands of the dog rose.
Childhood, gentle monk.
His eye extinguished,
someone’s red-gold heart-mouth has sealed his lips.
No wind in the evergreens, no singer, no lament.
Summer surrounds us, and wordless, O blue cathedral.

A few more sorrowful scenes.
The waters murmur, shadows are moist in the upper meadow.
Silence wide as a wasteland through the black streets of the forest.
Over the white eyelids of the dead,
white clover is blossoming.
Late snow like a fallen city shimmers the mountain’s riprap and stare.
Unmullioned window, stained light.

_____

The lapis lazuli dragonflies
of postbelief, rising and falling near
The broken slab wood steps, now one by one, now in pairs,
Are not the dragonflies of death with their blue-black eyes.
These are the tiny ones, the stems, the phosphorescent,
Rising and falling like drowned playthings.
They come and they disappear. They come back and they disappear.

Horizon-hump of pine bristles on end toward the south,
Breath-stealer, cloudless drop cloth
Of sky,
the great meadow beneath like a mirror face down in the earth,
Accepting nothing, giving it back.
We’ll go, as Mandelstam tells us, into a growing numbness of time,
Insoluble, as long as landscape, as indistinct.

Winterdorp

Het is een dorp
Niet ver van hier
Een boerendorp
Aan een rivier
Het is niet groot
En vrij obscuur
Maar ’t heeft een naam
En een bestuur
Er is een school
Een harmonie
Een bankfiliaal
Een kerk of drie
Een communist
Een zonderling
En zelfs een zang-
vereniging

Nu is ’t er stil
’t Is wintertijd

A New Song to an Old Tune

SONS of Shannon, Tamar, Trent,

Men of the Lothians, Men of Kent,

Essex, Wessex, shore and shire,

Mates of the net, the mine, the fire,

Lads of the wheel and desk and loom,

Noble and trader, squire and groom,

Come where the bugles of England play,

‘Over the hills and far away!’

Southern Cross and Polar Star —

Here are the Britons bred afar;

Serry, O serry them, fierce and keen,

Under the flag of the Empress-Queen;

Shoulder to shoulder down the track,

Where, to the unretreating Jack,

The victor bugles of England play,

‘Over the hills and far away!’

What if the best of our wages be

An empty sleeve, a stiff-set knee,

A crutch for the rest of life — who cares,

So long as the One Flag floats and dares?

So long as the One Race dares and grows?

Death — what is death but God’s own rose?

Let but the bugles of England play,

‘Over the hills and far away!’

A Child

A child,

Curious and innocent,

Slips from his Nurse, and rejoicing

Loses himself in the Fair.

Thro’ the jostle and din

Wandering, he revels,

Dreaming, desiring, possessing;

Till, of a sudden

Tired and afraid, he beholds

The sordid assemblage

Just as it is; and he runs

With a sob to his Nurse

(Lighting at last on him),

And in her motherly bosom

Cries him to sleep.

Thus thro’ the World,

Seeing and feeling and knowing,

Goes Man: till at last,

Tired of experience, he turns

To the friendly and comforting breast

Of the old nurse, Death.

Raamgedicht

Ik heb de Zaan nog nooit bezongen
Die nauwelijks stromende rivier
Waar ik voor in zwom als jongen
Tussen de IJsberen en ’t wier
Ik stak haar over met het pontje
Ik heb haar dikwijls overbrugd
Jarenlang hetzelfde rondje

Ik zag haar water even branden

O Zaan mijn jeugd is mijn lievelingsrivier

Kinkerstraatjes lopen samen

Kinkerstraatjes lopen samen
meestal door de Kinkerstraat

en hun geblondeerde haren
zijn als de manen van een paard

Kinkerstraatjes hebben witte
tanden en ze blijven altijd jong

want ze hebben niets om handen
Kinkerstraatjes zijn niet dom

en hun dochter is hun alles
met hun moeder zijn ze rijk

meestal in de straat van Kinker
en soms op de Haarlemmerdijk

Onbekommerd toont Amsterdam…

Onbekommerd toont Amsterdam
haar rotte gebit, haar aan aardgas
stervende bomen, haar onrein water
waarin de zon zich weerkaatst.
Uit ontelbare vervuilde neusgaten
blaast ze kwaadsappige dampen
over haar daken vol televisie-antennes
en duiven, waarboven de hemel
licht wordt en weer donker, sterren
balanceren een paar minuten op de spits
van een kerktoren, carillons
mengen hun valse stemmen in
de oorverdovende musique concrète
van auto’s, ambulances, pneumatische
boren, sloophamers, hei-installaties
en overal kruipen mensen in en uit
de schulp van hun huis, hun krot,
hun dierbare, gehate puinhoop.

Uit The Old Ace in The Hole

“Irrigated circles of winter wheat, dotted with stocker calves, grew on land as level as a runway. In other fields tractors lashed tails of dust. He noticed the habit of slower drivers to pull into the breakdown lane — here called the “courtesy lane” — and wave him on.

Ahead cities loomed, but as he came close the skyscrapers, mosques and spires metamorphosed into grain elevators, water towers and storage bins. The elevators were the tallest buildings on the plains, symmetrical, their thrusting shapes seeming to entrap kinetic energy. After a while Bob noticed their vertical rhythm, for they rose up regularly every five or ten miles in trackside towns. Most were concrete cylinders, some brick or tile, but at many sidings the old wood elevators, peeling and shabby, still stood, some surfaced with asbestos shingles, a few with rusted metal loosened by the wind. Rectilinear streets joined at ninety-degree angles. Every town had a motto: “The Town Where No One Wears a Frown”; “The Richest Land and the Finest People”; “10,000 Friendly People and One or Two Old Grumps.” He passed the Kar-Vu Drive-In, a midtown plywood Jesus, dead cows by the side of the road, legs stiff as two-by-fours, waiting for the renderer’s truck. There were nodding pump jacks and pivot irrigation rigs (one still decked out in Christmas lights) to the left and right, condensation tanks and complex assemblies of pipes and gauges, though such was the size of the landscape and their random placement that they seemed metal trinkets strewn by a vast and careless hand. Orange-and-yellow signs marked the existence of underground pipelines, for beneath the fields and pastures lay an invisible world of pipes, cables, boreholes, pumps and extraction devices, forming, with the surface fences and roads, a monstrous three-dimensional grid. This grid extended into the sky through contrails and invisible satellite transmissions. At the edge of fields he noticed brightly painted V-8 diesel engines (most converted to natural gas), pumping up water from the Ogallala aquifer below. And he passed scores of anonymous, low, grey buildings with enormous fans at their ends set back from the road and surrounded by chain-link fence. From the air these guarded hog farms resembled strange grand pianos with six or ten white keys, the trapezoid shape of the body the effluent lagoon in the rear”.

Wij zouden gaan wonen in schoonheid

Wij zouden gaan wonen in schoonheid
in augustusland past.

zonverlichte huizen.
Ik wandel met mijn vader,
maar midden op de brug moet hij
even stilstaan.
Zijn hartslag doet mij schrikken;
wij spreken niet van doodgaan
maar van een afgebroken kinderziekenhuis,
een etherslaap die langer dan het leven
duurde.

Winter

De vogels in de stad verkolen:
avondlicht daalt neer over
de tuinen waarin zij geluidloos
zullen overnachten.

Vroeger heb ik ook in tuinen willen
slapen, met mijn vader kijken
naar de sterren van een wintermaand.

In de stad opent de nacht als
een oude vrouwenmond; lantarens
geven amper licht, mijn vader zwijgt.
De tuinen van de stad vriezen opnieuw
dicht.

The Ivory Piece

A fragment of verse

Carelessly coiffed, with sash half slipping down
Cravat mis-tied, and tassels left to stream,
I walked haphazard through the early town,
Teased with the memory of a charming dream.

I recollected a great room. The day,
Half dead, lit faintly on the walls the pale
And sudden eyes that showed the formal play
Of woven actors in some curious tale.

In fabulous gardens, where romantic trees
Perched on the branches birds without a name.
