Aan de Maas

Aan de Maas gezeten

turend in het zwerk

het stadsgeraas geweken

ontstijgt men aan zichzelf

Op hoger plan gekomen

wiekend door de lucht

de zwaartekracht te boven

vindt men een ander terug

O vogel van verlangen

wiegend op de wind

verlos ons van elkander

en van elkaars gewicht

In de schemer

In de schemer buiten

op een tuinbank gezeten

van de geluidloze vlucht

van de vleermuis omgeven

werkt het gestage knagen

van het geweten

ons méér op de zenuwen

dan binnen

op de bank gelegen met

de televisie aan –

vandaar dat in zo weinig

tuinen banken staan

Na zijn dood verscheen nog het onvoltooide werk Quand on refuse, on dit non.

Uit: Allah Is Not Obliged  (Allah n’est pas obligé, vertaald door Frank Wynne)

„The full, final and completely complete title of my bullshit story is: Allah is not obliged to be fair about all the things he does here on earth. Okay. Right. I better start explaining some stuff.

First off, Number one . . . My name is Birahima and I’m a little nigger. Not ‘cos I’m black and I’m a kid. I’m a little nigger because I can’t talk French for shit. That’s how things are. You might be a grown-up, or old, you might be Arab, or Chinese, or white, or Russian-or even American-if you talk bad French, it’s called parler petit nègre-little nigger talking-so that makes you a little nigger too. That’s the rules of French for you.

Number two . . . I didn’t get very far at school; I gave up in my third year in primary school. I chucked it because everyone says education’s not worth an old grandmother’s fart any more. (In Black Nigger African Native talk, when a thing isn’t worth much we say it’s not worth an old grandmother’s fart, on account of how a fart from a fucked-up old granny doesn’t hardly make any noise and it doesn’t even smell really bad.) Education isn’t worth a grandmother’s fart any more, because nowadays even if you get a degree you’ve got no hope of becoming a nurse or a teacher in some fucked-up French-speaking banana republic.“ (“Banana republic” means it looks democratic, but really it’s all corruption and vested interests.) But going to primary school for three years doesn’t make you all autonomous and incredible. You know a bit, but not enough; you end up being what Black Nigger African Natives call grilled on both sides. You’re not an indigenous savage any more like the rest of the Black Nigger African Natives ‘cos you can understand the civilized blacks and the toubabs (a toubab is a white person) and work out what they’re saying, except maybe English people and the American Blacks in Liberia, but you still don’t know how to do geography or grammar or conjugation or long division or comprehension so you’ll never get the easy money working as a civil servant in some fucked-up, crooked republic like Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, etc., etc.

Dead Water

This is a ditch of desperate dead water,

Where wind can blow but raise no ripples.

Best just to throw in more scraps of copper and iron,

Might as well pour in your leftovers of cold porridge.

Perhaps the copper will green into emerald,

Tin cans rusting out stalks of peach blossoms;

Then let the grease weave up a sheet of silk,

While bacteria steam it into the clouds of dawn.

Let the dead water ferment into a ditch of green wine,

Pearl-like whitecaps floating all over;

The laughter of little pearls will turn into large pearls,

Before being bit burst by mosquitoes stealing wine.

&n
bsp;

So this ditch of desperate dead water

Can just boast of a few degrees of brightness.

And if the frogs can’t bear the solitude,

Then just say the dead water will cry out a song.

This is a ditch of desperate dead water,

Which is certainly not where beauty resides,

Best just to give it up for ugliness to cultivate,

And see what kind of world he can turn it into.

I wrote the book in San Francisco. I got the information from a chick I was dating – an intern in the Colombian Consulate.”

Roebling.
Roe-bleeeng.
Rrrrroe-bling.
Alone in the fifty-seventh-floor conference room, I repeat the mantra under my breath. I sit in a rigid half-lotus position atop the glass table and watch the suspension cables of the Brooklyn Bridge flicker against the night sky. The office air is sharp with disinfectant. I take a slug of rum and return to my mantra.John Roebling had a calling. Unfortunately for him, after the buildup, design, preparation, and politicking for the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, the hapless bastard promptly dropped dead. His son, Washington, brought the bridge to completion, but not without picking up a case of the bends and almost dying in the process. Neither man ever wavered from a life of dedication, direction, and diligence.
A lot of good it did either of them.
I remove my battered leather shoes, the toes stained gray with salt from the slushy city sidewalks, and knead my left foot through my sweaty dress sock. Hundreds of pairs of headlights move in a stream back and forth across the bridge.
Yesterday during a meeting in this same conference room, a neckless, pockmarked banker pointed out that the name the bends was, in fact, coined during the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. Hundreds of laborers toiled on the footing of the bridge, eighty feet below
the surface of the river. They worked in nine-foot-high wooden boxes known as caissons, which were pumped full of compressed air and lowered to the depths with the men inside. After resurfacing, scores of workers were inflicted with a mysterious illness. Crippling joint pain. Mental deterioration. Paralysis. And for a few, agonizing death. The name the bends was taken from the debilitated posture of the sufferers.”

„I wish either my father or my mother, or indeed both of them, as they were in duty both equally bound to it, had minded what they were about when they begot me; had they duly consider’d how much depended upon what they were then doing;-that not only the production of a rational Being was concern’d in it, but that possibly the happy formation and temperature of his body, perhaps his genius and the very cast of his mind;-and, for aught they knew to the contrary, even the fortunes of his whole house might take their turn from the humours and dispositions which were then uppermost:–Had they duly weighed and considered all this, and proceeded accordingly,–I am verily persuaded I should have made a quite different figure in the world, from that, in which the reader is likely to see me.-Believe me, good folks, this is not so inconsiderable a thing as many of you may think it;-you have all, I dare say, heard of the animal spirits, as how they are transfused from father to son, &c, &c.-and a great deal to that purpose:-Well, you may take my word, that nine parts in ten of a man’s sense or his nonsense, his successes and miscarriages in this world depend upon their motions and activity, and the different tracks and trains you put them into; so that when they are once set a-going, whether right or wrong, ’tis not a halfpenny matter,–away they go cluttering like hey-go-mad; and by treading the same steps over and over again, they presently make a road of it, as plain and as smooth as a garden-walk, which, when they are once used to, the Devil himself sometimes shall not be able to drive them off it.“

“Mag ik me even bekend maken,” zei de jongeman langzaam. “Ik ben Robbert Johannes Padt van Heijendaal.”
“Ròbbert!” Ella keek naar Gerrit Jan. “Wat is dat voor een krankzinnigheid?”
“Nee,” zei Gerrit Jan.
“Niets. Niets.

My greetings. I’m sorry I’m not here with you today but perhaps it’s just as well. In times such as these, it’s best not to reveal ourselves completely, not even to each other.

If you step over the line and into the circle, you may be able to hear better. Mind the chalk on your shoes.

I know many of you have travelled great distances to be here. Have you seen all there is to see? The pillbox batteries, the ovens, the ammunition depots with cavity floors? Did you visit the workers’ mass grave? Have you studied the plans carefully? Would you say it’s beautiful, this fort? They say it sits astride the mountains like a defiant lion.“

Woher so schnell?”

So oaner wär mer grad reacht zume Zahnstihrer. For mi ischt e Spieß von siebe Mannslengen noh net lang genueg.

Voller,

da Schnee auch auf dieses

sommerdurchschwommene Meer fiel,

blüht das Eis in den Körben,

die du zur Stadt trägst.

Sand

heischst du dafür,

denn die letzte

Rose daheim

enige

kring trekt.

My Guy

Oh little fishy. You, you brought the bottle

green tint to the world, the blue bauble glint.

Young and in love. This is a legacy that

has it on mud and lumber, oh yes,

that breathes through its blue glass bones.

Easy fella. In a flatbed Ford, a coaster

on rollers, a cloudy August afternoon.

They are out on errands and everything

is quiet. I must chase the golden fish away

to rhapsodize about him, little fish.

The guy has my eyes. Keen canoodling,

Zen commanding. Ken kaput. Fair of cheek,

huge of foot. Can not yet be tickled.

To begin is to let things out of control.

The park’s caged condor stumbles to the fore.

The mind can not be told what it does not know.

Let us begin by calling a massive bird a soul;

each wing wide as the height of a man or more.

To begin is to help things out of control

with a clasp of fence in beak and a forceful fold

of what was given, then out the rifted door.

The mind must graze what it can not hold.

If the population of the park took up a goal

of leaving, it wouldn’t stop to wonder where to go.

To begin is to chase thoughts out of control.

Likewise, as love and birth have come to show,

much can not be seen before we are ashore

where minds find what, at sea, they did not know.

The bird adjusts its shoulder-feathers like a stole,

a bristling cape, a heft of flight, a height left low.

To begin is to let things out of control.

The mind can not be told what it does not know.

Uit: Simit with Tea (Vertaald door Hatice Orun Ozturk)

“I would’ve liked to add “aged cheese” to this heading but it is better that I don’t because next to the companionship of simit and tea, it fades away to the background. We do have days when we have both simit and tea but the three of them?…Maybe I should’ve separated tea from simit too. Only simit, that delicious man made fruit of the morning should have been my topic. But what can you do? I couldn’t bear to leave out the tea. Although tea is secondary to simit, their companionship nevertheless is a genuine one. No breakfast can take the place of simit with tea! If a person eats a breakfast of butter, preserves, honey and even grapefruit but doesn’t leave his house in a car, one should get upset with him. After a breakfast like that, you must hop into a car without getting your shoes wet. Sitting in your fancy office chair without any mud on your shoes you must start a phone call:

-“Just like I said last night. Not a dime less.” You must hang up the phone and start

another call:

– “How is the stock market? Did you say 76.20 ? Don’t sell, wait. I am telling you to wait. Obviously I know something. I won’t sell for 77 either. Not a dime less than 80. OK I am waiting. If I don’t hear from you by noon, I may change my mind. Mark my words….” You must say.

However, after drinking tea with simit, we can walk on the muddy streets and with sesame seeds still between our teeth, we can run from place to place. It rains as we run, sweat drips down our foreheads. With sesame seeds between our teeth, we can still smell the morning tea. When will the day end? When will we finish the pile of paper in front of us and lay down in our beds and get some rest? See, it is morning again! Acem Hasan Efendi must have brewed the tea. Where is this dimwitted simit seller? He comes and sells us the simit from yesterday, or he doesn’t come and the tea loses its taste.”

“Dat gaat te ver, they heard Erika say.

The dull iron mountains beyond which stretch the lava fields of the Palus Somnii and the mercurial black hills and dismal quarries of the Mare tranquilllitatis take the dawn of the moon’s sixth day on their garnet peaks, then as a feathery limelight on the spines of their gullies, and hold in their piedmont rubble a coral of lightning.

A hand on a sandy thigh, drone of the sea, unending kiss.

Across the white bones of the rim of Atlas, silent from the storms of fiery rock at the moon’s birth to the holocaust of time, steel light as if flashed from tungsten strikes next the mountain, dolomite and terrible, in the crater’s desolate midst, and next, above black valleys of shadow, the sooty promontories of Hercules, and spreads on to the dead stone rings of Aristotle and Eudoxus.”

“His information that Comyn would he in town today was quickly confirmed. He learned that his enemy, who was much involved in this bout of litigation, had installed himself at the small monastery of the Franciscan or Grey Friars, founded by the Lady Devorgilla, Balliol’s mother, in the Castle Wynd, conveniently close to the castle itself. Here Bruce sought him-to learn that his quarry was at present attending the court nearby, but would be back. Bruce declared grimly that he would wait.

He had with him his brothers Nigel and Thomas, and his new brother-in- law Sir Christopher Seton, whom Christian of Mar had recently married. As Bruce anticipated, the news that he was back in Scotland and in fact here in Dumfries, very speedily was conveyed to Comyn in the castle, who promptly found his business there insufficiently vital to detain him from coming to verify the matter.

With a party of relatives and supporters he arrived at the monastery, and even though warned, the sight of Bruce sitting waiting for him before the fire of the refectory undoubtedly perturbed him. He stared.

“I had not looked to see you, my lord. Back. Here in Scotland,” he jerked. “So soon.” “No? I warrant you did not! But I am here. Safe and in order.” Bruce’s voice may have sounded steady enough, but only iron control hid the quivering tension that had been part of the man since the fact of Comyn’s treachery had struck him four days before.

“You come from London? From Edward?” “From Edward, yes. That surprises you?”

“Only that you are not long gone. To return so soon. Comyn shrugged. “You saw the King? Spoke with him?”

“I did.”

The other obviously was nonplussed. “He treated you kindly?”

“Not kindly, no. Edward is seldom kind to Scots.”

“Did he speak … of me?”

“What he said is for your privy ear, my lord.”

“Ah, yes. To be sure.” Comyn looked around him at all the interested throng of his own supporters and Bruce’s, filling the small refectory. He beckoned to the Prior, who fussed about, in a flutter with all this splendid company. “Where may I speak alone with my lord of Carrick?” he demanded.”

“Another natural inclination of Nehru’s, which was created by his entire upbringing and education by an English tutor at home, and at Harrow and Cambridge later, was that he would not employ anybody who was not educated abroad, especially at Cambridge or Oxford. As all Indians so educated were, as a class, pure opportunists who only pursued self-interest, he got a whole cohort of them round himself.

His political colleagues he was compelled to accept as
the unavoidable company imposed on him by the new universal franchise. But he would not accept them as fellow-workers. He got together those who were educated abroad. This made him select as his highest adviser on foreign policy Sir Girija Shanker Bajpai, a member of the Indian Civil Service, who under the British had carried on active propaganda against the Congress in the United States. But at least he was a decent and refined opportunist. Most of the others whom he selected for important jobs were maldodorus like skunks. Thus India under the Nehru government was like castles in Spain resting on kitchens, if not sewers.

I assumed that this unnatural government could not last in India and the power of the Anglicised Indian would disappear with Nehru’s death, which in any case could not be far distant. At that time I was asked by a very important journal in India to write an article on the question: ‘After Nehru, What?’ was the crucial question and not ‘Who’. My assumption did not prove to be correct. The dictatorship of the Nehru dynasty continued with short interruptions, which were like the ‘accidentals’ in a musical composition. The normal key was quickly restored.”

Uit: Middlemarch

“WHO that cares much to know the history of man, and how the mysterious mixture behaves under the varying experiments of Time, has not dwelt, at least briefly, on the life of Saint Theresa,’ has not smiled with some gentleness at the thought of the little girl walking forth one morning hand – in – hand with her still smaller brother, to go and seek martyrdom in the country of the Moors? Out they toddled from rugged Avila, wide – eyed and helpless – looking as two fawns, but with human hearts, already beating to a national idea; until domestic reality met them in the shape of uncles, and turned them back from their great resolve. That child – pilgrimage was a fit beginning. Theresa’s pass
ionate, ideal nature demanded an epic life: what were many – volumed romances of chivalry and the social conquests of a brilliant girl to her. Her flame quickly burned up that light fuel; and, fed from within, soared after some illimitable satisfaction, some object which would never justify weariness, which would reconcile self – despair with the rapturous consciousness of life beyond self. She found her epos in the reform of a religious order.

That Spanish woman who lived three hundred years ago was certainly not the last of her kind. Many Theresas have been born who found for themselves no epic life wherein there was a constant unfolding of far – resonant action; perhaps only a life of mistakes, the offspring of a certain spiritual grandeur ill – matched with the meanness of opportunity; perhaps a tragic failure which found no sacred poet and sank unwept into oblivion. With dim lights and tangled circumstance they tried to shape their thought and deed in noble agreement; but after all, to common eyes their struggles seemed mere inconsistency and formlessness; for these later – born Theresas were helped by no coherent social faith and order which could perform the function of knowledge for the ardently willing soul. Their ardour alternated between a vague ideal and the common yearning of womanhood; so that the one was disapproved as extravagance, and the other condemned as a lapse.”

Uit: Buddha’s Little Finger (Vertaald door Andrew Bromfield)

„Tverskoi Boulevard was exactly as it had been when I last saw it, two years before. Once again it was February, with snowdrifts everywhere and that peculiar gloom which somehow manages to infiltrate the very daylight. The same old women were perched motionless on the benches; above them, beyond the black latticework of the branches, there was the same grey sky, like an old, worn mattress drooping down towards the earth under the weight of a sleeping God.

Some things, however, were different. This winter the avenues were scoured by a blizzard straight off the steppes, and I should not have been in the least surprised to have come face to face with a pair of wolves during the course of my walk. The bronze Pushkin seemed a little sadder than usual – no doubt because his breast was covered with a red apron bearing the inscription: ‘Long Live the First Anniversary of the Revolution’. I felt not the slightest inclination for ironical comment on the fact that the cheers were intended for an event which could not by definition last longer than a single day – just recently I had been afforded more than ample opportunity to glimpse the demonic face concealed behind such lapidary absurdities inscribed on red.

It was beginning to get dark, but I could still make out Strastnoi Monastery through the snowy haze. On the square in front of it were two open trucks, their tall side walls tightly strung with bright scarlet material; there was a crowd jostling around them and the orator’s voice carried to where I stood. I could scarcely make out anything of what he said, but the general meaning was clear enough from his intonation and the machine-gun rattle of the ‘r’ in the words ‘proletariat’ and ’terror’. Two drunken soldiers walked past me, the bayonets on their rifles swaying behind their shoulders. They were hurrying towards the square, but one of them fixed his brazen gaze on me, slowed his pace and opened his mouth as though about to say something; fortunately – for him and for me – his companion tugged him by the sleeve and they walked on.“

„Spray from the waterfall moistened his suntanned skin.  Sand skipped through the air, the granules sticking uncomfortably where the water had dampened him.  This rare gust of wind ruffled the Dwarf’s mane of hair and sent the golden curls dancing around his massive shoulders.

There it was again – the bellow of Nurgor war-cries.  Galar leaned further on the head of his axe, surveying the lay of the land with a myopic squint.

‘Jevel,’ the Dwarf cursed under his breath.  He had forgotten his spectacles, yet again.  His axe, on the other hand, he didn’t even need to think about, strapped as it was to his back – unless it was in his chunky hands, like it was now.

Galar jumped to run and stopped on one foot, poised between darting back to his hut to retrieve his spectacles, and investigating at once.  If battle were to come, it was always a compromise between looking fierce and seeing clearly.  The decision was made in an instant as the momentum of his charge conquered considerable inertia.  Then Galar was flying down the mountainside, bare feet flinging up sand like a camel.  Short, quick strides carried the warrior through the desolate terrain that was a blur to either side of him.

Were they trees or Nurgor?  Galar had lived here for years, and yet it was impossible to judge between vegetation and monsters without his glasses.  The land had a mind of its own.  And it liked to change its mind frequently.  The Dwarf ignored the hazy blobs and kept his course, figuring that if they had been Nurgor, they would either be rushing him or fleeing by now.

The glaring sun suddenly faded for a moment, throwing the mountain range around him into gloom.  Galar had just mounted the top of a hill, and it was at this moment that he found what he was looking for.  No Nurgor were in sight, but their prey was.  Out of breath by now, and cursing for the hundredth time the climate of the land he had made his home, Galar hurried to the stranger’s side.

‘Friend!’ he called.  ‘S’alright, yer safe!’

As he approached, the figure became, in Galar’s sight, with ever more certainty, a man.

Was he dead? „

Uit: Ein Bär will nach oben

“Wie schreibt man was ?”

“Bob”

De Dood in vlees en bloed

Mij zit de Dood in vlees en bloed,
Ik houd van hartstocht die verbleekt is,
Ik houd ervan te kussen wie
Mij alleenlaat.

Ik houd van ’t griezelig nodigende
Wenken van droevige avonden:
De grote, heilige Dood die zich
Speels aankondigt.

Waarin wijzen, zieken, dichters
Hun toevlucht zien.

Ik houd van wie ontgoocheld raakte,
Van wie gevallen zich bezeerde,
Van wie bedroefd, wanhopig is:
Van de wereld.

Mij zit de Dood in vlees en bloed,
Ik houd van hartstocht die verbleekt is,
Ik houd ervan te kussen wie
Mij alleenlaat.

Walk with me, reader, into Whitecross Street. It is Saturday night, the market-night of the poor; also the one evening in the week which the weary toilers of our great city can devote to ease and recreation in the sweet assurance of a morrow unenslaved. Let us see how they spend this “Truce of God;” our opportunities will be of the best in the district we are entering.

As we suddenly turn northwards out of the dim and quiet regions of Barbican, we are at first confused by the glare of lights and the hubbub of cries. Pressing through an ever-moving crowd, we find ourselves in a long and narrow street, forming, from end to end, one busy market. Besides the ordinary shops, amongst which the conspicuous fronts of the butchers’ and the grocers’ predominate, the street is lined along either pavement with rows of stalls and booths, each illuminated with flaring naphtha-lamps, the flames of which shoot up fiercely at each stronger gust of wind, filling the air around with a sickly odour, and throwing a weird light upon the multitudinous faces. Behind the lights stand men, women and children, each hallooing in every variety of intense key — from the shrillest conceivable piping to a thunderous roar, which well-nigh deafens one — the prices and the merits of their wares. The fronts of the houses, as we glance up towards the deep blackness overhead, have a decayed, filthy, often an evil, look; and here and there, on either side, is a low, yawning archway, or a passage some four feet wide, leading presumably to human habi
tations. Let us press through the throng to the mouth of one of these and look in, as long as the reeking odour will permit us. Straining the eyes into horrible darkness, we behold a blind alley, the unspeakable abominations of which are dimly suggested by a gas-lamp flickering at the further end. Here and there through a window glimmers a reddish light, forcing one to believe that people actually do live here; otherwise the alley is deserted, and the footstep echoes as we tread cautiously up the narrow slum.“

“This summer day began like all the others. Harry prepared his breakfast in the kitchen – Rice Krispies with skimmed milk and Sanka sweetened with saccharin. At about nine-thirty he took the elevator down to get the mail. A day didn’t go by that he didn’t receive a number of checks, but this day brought a bounty. The stocks had fallen, but the companies kept paying the dividends as usual. Harry got money from buildings on which he held mortgages, from rents, bonds, and all kinds of business ventures that he barely remembered. An insurance company paid him an annuity. For years he had been getting a monthly check from Social Security. This morning’s yield came to over eleven thousand dollars. True, he would have to withhold a great part of this for taxes, but it still left him with some five thousand dollars for himself. While he totaled up the figures, he deliberated: Should he go to the office of Merrill Lynch and see what was happening on the Exchange? No, there was no point to it. Even if the stocks rose early in the morning, the day would end in losses. “The market is completely crazy,” he mumbled to himself. He considered it an iron rule that inflation always went along with a bullish market, not with a bearish market. But now both the dollar and the stocks were collapsing. Well, you could never be sure about anything but death.”

Uit: From Eve to Dawn : A History of Women

„It was the lowest point in women’s history: a male historian has pointed out that nineteenth-century British women had fewer rights than Babylonian women possessed when Hammurabi’s Code was written.1 Moreover, British women were no worse off than women in other Western countries, and perhaps better off than women in Eastern societies.

But the nineteenth century was also the period in which women as a caste for the first time stood up en masse and demanded an end to subjugation. Hard-earned victories gradually won them the right to acquire advanced education, to learn a profession and actually practise it, and to own their personal property. From the perspective of this book, it is the most cheering period in female history, the moment the tide began to turn.

It was just such a period for workers, too (many of whom were now women); they also began to stand up and protest wages that were inadequate to maintain life, as well as inhumane working conditions and hours. Middle-class people, including many women, sided with the workers, arguing also that tiny children should not be working in factories, tied to machines, and that all children should be decently fed, healed, and educated.

But of course, such arguments would not have been necessary if the actual conditions of life were not so hellish. Cities were overcrowded, filthy, and unhealthy; factories were unsanitary and unhygienic, and workers were treated worse than animals. Yet even so, agricultural workers often found factory work preferable to work on the farm, which was brutally hard and demeaning.

To complete the picture of this age of contrasts, it was also a period when socialists (and others) began to envision better ways of living, inventing utopian schemes for living and working in harmony with nature and the machine. Some of these schemes were realized, in towns that still stand (as ruins) in England and the United States. But none of them were successful, largely because men continued to exploit women.“

„From her doctor’s coat pockets she lays out the tools of her trade and wipes everything with antiseptic cloths. A comedy stethoscope. Five different types of magic wand. Small red foam balls that, with a little surreptitious rubbing between the palms, or a heartfelt ‘abracadabra’ from a child, metamorphose into a selection of miniature animals. A huge pair of plastic scissors. Handfuls of stickers. The squeaking plastic hammer. She takes off her doctor’s coat. It’s a real doctor’s coat, in thick white cotton, but embellished with colourful patterns on the pockets and with her name, ‘Dr Pippity’, emblazoned on the back like some kind of patchwork tattoo. An intricate circuit and a couple of AAA batteries enable her to make the squeaks and dongs. She takes off her luridly striped pinafore, with

the flowers on springs attached to the kangaroo-style pouch, the badges dotted here and there with ‘I am 8’ and ‘smile’ and various cartoon characters. She peels off her tights – she customized this pair so that one leg has multicoloured dots and the other has wriggling lines.

She showed them off that afternoon, very forlornly, to a girl with no hair up on Gainsborough, the cancer ward.

‘I’ve not got no hair no more’, the child had told her. Dr Pippity had sat beside her and stretched her legs out. ‘This leg here,’ she showed the girl, ‘has the multicoloured measles.’ The girl gingerly placed a finger over the spots to check. ‘And this leg here’, Dr Pippity declared, ‘has worms!’

Uit: On the Art of Writing

„And Flaubert, that gladiator among artists, held that, at its highest, literary art could be carried into pure science. ‘I believe,’ said he, ’that great art is scientific and impersonal. You should by an intellectual effort transport yourself into characters, not draw them into yourself. That at least is the method.’ On the other hand, says Goethe, ‘We should endeavour to use words that correspond as closely as possible with what we feel, see, think, imagine, experience, and reason. It is an endeavour we cannot evade and must daily renew.’ I call Flaubert’s the better counsel, even though I have spent a part of this lecture in attempting to prove it impossible. It at least is noble, encouraging us to what is difficult. The shrewder Goethe encourages us to exploit ourselves to the top of our bent. I think Flaubert would have hit the mark if for ‘impersonal’ he had substituted ‘disinterested.’

For–believe me, Gentlemen–so far as Handel stands above Chopin, as Velasquez above Greuze, even so far stand the great masculine objective writers above all who appeal to you by parade of personality or private sentiment.

Mention of these great masculine ‘objective’ writers brings me to my last word: which is, ‘Steep yourselves in them: habitually bring all to the test of them: for while you cannot escape the fate of all style, which is to be personal, the more of catholic manhood you inherit from those great loins the more you will assuredly beget.’

This then is Style. As technically manifested in Literature it is the power to touch with ease, grace, precision, any note in the gamut of human thought or emotion.

But essentially it resembles good manners. It comes of endeavouring to understand others, of thinking for them rather than for yourself–of thinking, that is, with the heart as well as the head. It gives rather than receives; it is nobly careless of thanks or applause, not being fed by these but rather sustained and continually refreshed by an inward loyalty to the best. Yet, like ‘character’ it has its altar within; to that retires for counsel, from that fetches its illumination, to ray outwards. Cultivate, Gentlemen, that habit of withdrawing to be advised by the best. So, says Fénelon, ‘you will find yourself infinitely quieter, your words will be fewer and more effectual; and while you make less ado, what you do will be more profitable.’

„Once upon our time, there was an earthquake: but this one is the most powerful ever recorded since the invention of the Richter scale made it possible for us to measure apocalyptic warnings.

It tipped a continental shelf. These tremblings often cause floods; this colossus did the reverse, drew back the ocean as a vast breath taken. The most secret level of our world lay revealed: the sea-bedded-wrecked ships, facades of houses, ballroom candelabra, toilet bowl, pirate chest, TV screen, mail-coach, aircraft fuselage, cannon, marble torso, Kalashnikov, metal carapace of a tourist bus-load, baptismal font, automatic dishwasher, computer, swords sheathed in barnacles, coins turned to stone. The astounded gaze raced among these things; the population who had fled from their toppling houses to the maritime hills ran down. Where terrestrial crash and bellow had terrified them, there was naked silence. The saliva of the sea glistened upon these objects; it is given that time does not, never did, exist down here where the materiality of the past and the present as they lie has no chronological order, all is one, all is nothing-or all is possessible at once.

People rushed to take; take, take. This was-when, anytime, sometime-valuable, that might be useful, what was this, well someone will know, that must have belonged to the rich, it’s mine now, if you don’t grab what’s over there someone else will, feet slipped and slithered on seaweed and sank in soggy sand, gasping sea-plants gaped at them, no-one remarked there were no fish, the living inhabitants of this unearth had been swept up and away with the water. The ordinary opportunity of looting shops which was routine to people during the political uprisings was no comparison. Orgiastic joy gave men, women and their children strength to heave out of the slime and sand what they did not know they wanted, quickened their staggering gait as they ranged, and this was more than profiting by happenstance, it was robbing the power of nature before which they had fled helpless. Take, take; while grabbing they were able to forget the wreck of their houses and the loss of time-bound possessions there. They had tattered the silence with their shouts to one another and under these cries like the cries of the absent seagulls they did not hear a distant approach of sound rising as a great wind does. And then the sea came back, engulfed them to add to its treasury.“

“When he appeared at the door, it was not possible, a man come out of an ash storm, all blood and slag, reeking of burned matter, with pinpoint glints of slivered glass in his face. He looked immense, in the doorway, with a gaze that had no distance in it. He carried a briefcase and stood slowly nodding. She thought he might be in shock but didn’t know what this meant in precise terms, medical terms. He walked past her toward the kitchen and she tried calling her doctor, then 911, then the nearest hospital, but all she heard was the drone of overloaded lines. She turned off the TV set, not sure why, protecting him from the news he’d just walked out of, that’s why, and then went into the kitchen. He was sitting at the table, and she poured him a glass of water and told him that Justin was with his grandmother, released early from school and also being protected from the news, at least as it concerned his father.

He said, “Everybody’s giving me water.”

She thought he could not have travelled all this distance or even climbed the stairs if he’d suffered serious injury, grievous blood loss.

Then he said something else. His briefcase sat beside the table like something yanked out of a landfill. He said there was a shirt coming down out of the sky.

She poured water on a dishcloth and wiped dust and ash from his hands, face, and head, careful not to disturb the glass fragments. There was more blood than she’d realized at first, and then she began to realize something else—that his cuts and abrasions were not severe or numerous enough to account for all this blood. It was not his blood. Most of it came from somebody else.”

Song from Aella

  O SING unto my roundelay,

O drop the briny tear with me;

Dance no more at holyday,

Like a running river be:

   My love is dead,

   Gone to his death-bed

All under the willow-tree.

Black his cryne as the winter night,

White his rode as the summer snow,

Red his face as the morning light,

Cold he lies in the grave below:

   My love is dead,

   Gone to his death-bed

All under the willow-tree.

Sweet his tongue as the throstle’s note,

Quick in dance as thought can be,

Deft his tabor, cudgel stout;

O he lies by the willow-tree!

   My love is dead,

   Gone to his death-bed

All under the willow-tree.

Hark! the raven flaps his wing

In the brier’d dell below;

Hark! the death-owl loud doth sing

To the nightmares, as they go:

   My love is dead,

   Gone to his death-bed

All under the willow-tree.

See! the white moon shines on high;

Whiter is my true-love’s shroud:

Whiter than the morning sky,

Whiter than the evening cloud:

   My love is dead,

   Gone to his death-bed

All under the willow-tree.

Here upon my true-love’s grave

Shall the barren flowers be laid;

Not one holy saint to save

All the coldness of a maid:

   My love is dead,

   Gone to his death-bed

All under the willow-tree.

With my hands I’ll dent the briers

Round his holy corse to gre:

Ouph and fairy, light your fires,

Here my body still shall be:

   My love is dead,

   Gone to his death-bed

All under the willow-tree.

Come, with acorn-cup and thorn,

Drain my heartes blood away;

Life and all its good I scorn,

Dance by night, or feast by day:

   My love is dead,

   Gone to his death-bed

All under the willow-tree.

Dancing Tango

Oh, Orlando!

Remember the night we danced

quietly on the sands where music

was played? Your words were

wonderers, said quietly

in the pockets of my ears.

Oh, Esphahan!

With your turquoise blue mosques

and lovers hiding under the sands

by the Zayandehrood and its haunting

blue skies. Still the words did

wonders when they were said quietly

in the pockets of my ears.

Time is eternity, my dignity

resides in yours and your

words are wonders that I count

as precious coins kept quietly

in the pockets of my tears.

Nothing

Nothing is all I am

Nothing overloading nothing

Closing the doors,

Opening an extra into an empty space,

Nothing ensues but a further war.

The bombs, lights that blind and Damascus,

Burning after Tehran. Sisters calling in despair,

Brothers callous the arms of infidels. Nothing happens

But children die, and journalists are filming for a deadline.

Nothing comes after nothing but I,

Kneel, cry for nothing,

and still the no shepherd birds burn at flight.

Nothing happens. I walk by the Central Park

Next to nothing, and the no flight zone is

Just nothing yet throat slides over throat,

Bullets shut and blood drops. Here nothing happens

But I write to keep nothing from overloading nothing.

“To live! Without property, but what was that to me? Let them confiscate it — they were brigands anyway, confiscating was their business. They wouldn’t get much good out of mine, a few books and clothes — why, we didn’t even have a radio. My husband was a loyal Communist of the old stamp, not the kind who had to have a Buick or a Mercedes… Ten years! …Do you [the judges], with your codfish faces, really think you can go on robbing and murdering for another ten years, that there aren’t people in the Party who will stop you sooner or later? I knew there were — and in order to see that day, I must live. In prison, if needs be, but I must at all costs live! … I looked at the guards, whose hands were still clasped behind my back. Every nerve in my body was quivering with the joy of being alive. What nice faces the guards had! Peasant boys from Ryazan or Kursk, most likely. They couldn’t help being warders — no doubt they were conscripts. And they had joined hands to save me from falling. But they needn’t have — I wasn’t going to fall. I shook back my hair curled so carefully before facing the court, so as not to disgrace the memory of Charlotte Corday. Then I gave the guards a friendly smile. They looked at me in astonishment.”

“Long after him a man and a woman entered the door. They were poorly clad and lingered bashfully in the corner between door and fireplace.

The host at once came forward to his two guests. He took the hand of each and led them up the room. Then he said to the others: “Is it not truly said that the shorter the way the more the delay? These are our nearest neighbors. Branehog had no other tenants besides them and me.”

“Say rather there are none but you,” said the man. “You cannot call me a tenant. I am only a poor charcoal-burner whom you have allowed to settle on your land.”

The man seated himself beside Torarin and they began to converse. The newcomer told Torarin how it was he came so late to the feast. It was because their cabin had been visited by three strangers whom they durst not leave, three journeymen tanners who had been with them all day. When they came in the morning they were worn out and ailing; (…)“

May 1968

When the Dean said we could not cross campus

until the students gave up the buildings,

we lay down, in the street,

we said the cops will enter this gate

over us. Lying back on the cobbles,

I saw the buildings of New York City

from dirt level, they soared up

and stopped, chopped off–above them, the sky,

the night air over the island.

The mounted police moved, near us,

while we sang, and then I began to count,

12, 13, 14, 15,

I counted again, 15, 16, one

month since the day on that deserted beach,

17, 18, my mouth fell open,

my hair on the street,

if my period did not come tonight

I was pregnant. I could see the sole of a cop’s

shoe, the gelding’s belly, its genitals–

if they took me to Women’s Detention and did

the exam on me, the speculum,

the fingers–I gazed into the horse’s tail

like a comet-train. All week, I had

thought about getting arrested, half-longed

to give myself away. On the tar–

on
e brain in my head, another,

in the making, near the base of my tail–

I looked at the steel arc of the horse’s

shoe, the curve of its belly, the cop’s

nightstick, the buildings streaming up

away from the earth. I knew I should get up

and leave, but I lay there looking at the space

above us, until it turned deep blue and then

ashy, colorless, Give me this one

night, I thought, and I’ll give this child

the rest of my life, the horse’s heads,

this time, drooping, dipping, until

they slept in a circle around my body and my daughter

Lieber Niko,

Sonnets of the Blood

I

What is the flesh and blood compounded of

But a few moments in the life of time?

This prowling of the cells, litigious love,

Wears the long claw of flesh-arguing crime.

Consider the first settlers of our bone,

Observe how busily they sued the dust,

Estopped forever by the last dusted stone.

It is a pity that two brothers must

Perceive a canker of perennial flower

To make them brothers in mortality:

Perfect this treason to the murderous hour

If you would win the hard identity

Of brothers—a long race for men to run

Nor quite achieved when the perfection’s won.

II

Near to me as perfection in the blood

And more mysterious far, is this, my brother:

A light vaulted into your solitude.

It studied burns lest you its rage should smother.

It is a flame obscure to any eyes,

Most like the fire that warms the deepest grave

(The cold grave is the deepest of our lies)

To which our blood is the indentured slave:

The fire that burns most secretly in you

Does not expend you hidden and alone,

The studious fire consumes not one, but two—

Me also, marrowing the self-same bone.

Our property in fire is death in life

Flawing the rocky fundament with strife.

The earth had transformed the oaks

The earth had transformed the oaks,

Fresh sea water sparkled

Blue at the new day rising;

But the dove of Anacreon

Lived on in ancient Tempe.

One day it departed for the mountains for water

And did not return as was its habit.

It did not freeze in the snow

Nor was it wounded by an arrow,

But flew onward until it landed

At my happy home.

When the house and land

Reappeared beside the sea at dawn,

What joy welled in my eyes.

It awoke me, brushing

Against the window panes.

I arose and looked outside:

The grapes in the ripening vineyards

Covered our fields,

The blossoming flax

Swayed in the wind,

Gently smiling, and like its blossoms

Was the colour of the sky.

You could look out and forget

The cares of this world.

The gleaners were singing

Amidst the sheaves. I had just

Returned from abroad, to be reunited

With my sisters. My name was

Constantly on my mother’s lips.

A joy filled my body

Like that of a fair maiden

Who, in the warmth of her bed at night,

Senses her breasts

Beginning to swell.

kneedt mij borsten, streelt mijn rondingen.

I am alone with you.
A fire burns in the distance
It light s our faces
As before in the empty cinema,
Where we arrived, at some beginning
To watch a foreign film. Our eyes,
In new utterance, murmuring subtitles,
What words could never speak
The tips of seats, rows of air
And the moony screen,
A tableau of feathers and cloud
Two of us, alone, as one
Rapt in the spread of wings.

Later, alone we dine in the Café
Campagne. Our conversation
Deafens a burgeoning crowd
Coffee was nectar, our words
Were whispering petals.
Dearest Blodeuwedd, I saw the sweetest
Sorrow on your face, the green ocean
In your eyes, I was cleansed
By your tears. I have always
Known you.

Across the border on the far island,
You stepped into the waters with me
And when you disrobed you lit the stars
And the stars and my eyes kissed your skin
Your slender legs, columns, tilting
Toward heaven, in the age of Helen,
Touched the water and the sky.
I saw the milky way that night.

Síneánn, I am your Pablo
We are two white birds sailing
Over the foam of the sea.
Solvent to my stone you are the hinge
To my casement world. Rain petal
Voice, lithe, alabaster woman,
I am lost in your Sargasso eyes
I hold your skin, my Selkie
Sweet Niamh, I have lived
One hundred years this week.

It is warm in the distance
In the country of the sun
We end at the house in Umbria
In the autumn, there is no word
Siberia, my light Rosaleen.
Now is harvest time.
At the great table we feast
With family and friends
And I am not alone with you.

Am Ufer

Die Welt verstummt, dein Blut erklingt;

in seinen hellen Abgrund sinkt

aus lauter Licht gemacht;

still, mein Wildfang, gib acht!

Gib acht, es dreht die Sterne, du,

im ganzen Himmelsraum.

Es dreht die Sterne ohne Ruh

und macht Musik, Musik dazu,

so fein, wir hören’s kaum;

Drum träumt mein Wildfang gar so gern,

wir drehn uns mit auf einem Stern;

es geht uns nicht zu schnell,

das große Karussell.

Transfigured Time

     —for António Ramos Rosa

The house where my father will be born

is still unfinished.

It lacks the wall my hands have not yet built.

His footsteps searching for me across the earth

now come towards this street.

Yet I can’t hear them, they still don’t reach me.

Behind that door are echoes

and voices I recognise miles off,

but they are spoken only by portraits.

The face not seen in any mirror,

because it’s late being born

or still doesn’t exist,

could be of any one of us —

it looks like all of us.

My bones are not in that tomb

but those of my great-uncle Zacarias

who used a walking stick and pseudonym.

My own remains have long been lost.

This poem was written in another century,

some night by a guttering candle,

by me, by someone else, I don’t recall.

Time consumed the flame

and lingered in my darkened hands

and in these eyes that never read the poem.

When the candle returns with its light

I’ll already be gone.

Family Album

The one in the background is Aunt Adela,

a worldly witch who lived at so many different times

even today I don’t know if she’s still here or not.

From this grandfather I inherited my name.

A rickety old oxcart snatched him from his village

to bury him a long way off.

I was born much later and still I remember him.

Luis the lawyer vanished suddenly

in the year of the plague. He left behind letters, postcards,

the map of a vague innocence.

Veronica is that one with a white fan

and the disdainful bearing that became her so well.

Of this particular José — there were several others —

no one knows when or where he perished.

He walked around screaming at his shadow on the roadway.

My dear King Richard looks much younger

than his death. And perhaps that’s how it was. . .

In the lost land of my absent family

this almost invisible album I open and close

burns my eyelids as they watch over its dream.

Don’t wake these portraits

till I can rejoin them forever

on the album’s last page.

Hoe kan ma me zoiets aandoen!

Uit: The Blind Assassin

Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge. The bridge was being repaired: she went right through the Danger sign. The car fell a hundred feet into the ravine, smashing through the treetops feathery with new leaves, then burst into flames and rolled down into the shallow creek at the bottom. Chunks of the bridge fell on top of it. Nothing much was left of her but charred smithereens.

I was informed of the accident by a policeman: the car was mine, and they’d traced the license. His tone was respectful: no doubt he recognized Richard’s name. He said the tires may have caught on a streetcar track or the brakes may have failed, but he also felt bound to inform me that two witnesses – a retired lawyer and a bank teller, dependable people – had claimed to have seen the whole thing. They’d said Laura had turned the car sharply and deliberately, and had plunged off the bridge with no more fuss than stepping off a curb. They’d noticed her hands on the wheel because of the white gloves she’d been wearing.

It wasn’t the brakes, I thought. She had her reasons. Not that they were ever the same as anybody else’s reasons. She was completely ruthless in that way.”

SONG and CHORUS–NANKI-POO.

     A wandering minstrel I–

A thing of shreds and patches,

          Of ballads, songs and snatches,

     And dreamy lullaby!

     My catalogue is long,

          Through every passion ranging,

          And to your humours changing

     I tune my supple song!

          Are you in sentimental mood?

               I’ll sigh with you,

                    Oh, sorrow, sorrow!

On maiden’s coldness do you brood?

               I’ll do so, too–

                    Oh, sorrow, sorrow!

          I’ll charm your willing ears

          With songs of lovers’ fears,

     &nb
sp;    While sympathetic tears

               My cheeks bedew–

                    Oh, sorrow, sorrow!

But if patriotic sentiment is wanted,

          I’ve patriotic ballads cut and dried;

For where’er our country’s banner may be planted,

All other local banners are defied!

Our warriors, in serried ranks assembled,

Never quail–or they conceal it if they do–

And I shouldn’t be surprised if nations trembled

Before the mighty troops of Titipu!

CHORUS.   We shouldn’t be surprised, etc.

PRIDE

Even rocks crack, I’m telling you,

and not on account of age.

For years they lie on their backs

in the heat and the cold,

so many years,

it almost creates the illusion of calm.

They don’t move, so the cracks stay hidden.

A kind of pride.

Years pass over them as they wait.

Whoever is going to shatter them

hasn’t come yet.

And so the moss flourishes, the seaweed

whips around,

the sea bursts forth and rolls back —

Uit: Death with Interruptions

THE FOLLOWING DAY, NO ONE DIED. THIS FACT, BEING ABSOLUTELY contrary to life’s rules, provoked enormous and, in the circumstances, perfectly justifiable anxiety in people’s minds, for we have only to consider that in the entire forty volumes of universal history there is no mention, not even one exemplary case, of such a phenomenon ever having occurred, for a whole day to go by, with its generous allowance of twenty-four hours, diurnal and nocturnal, matutinal and vespertine, without one death from an illness, a fatal fall, or a successful suicide, not one, not a single one.
