meiner Bewegung in diesem
Streitfall zwei Meter über
dem Boden schwelt es weiter
wühlen die Kinder deins
und meins darin umher
spielen Burg oder Grotte
so dick gepolstert tut ihnen
nichts weh liegen sie nicht
wund auf diesem Schlachtfeld

die Kinder sind uns abhandengekommen

die Kinder sind uns abhandengekommen
wir kennen ihre Namen nicht
es blieb keine Zeit sie auszuwählen einzustudieren
ihre Zimmer bleiben unbezogen
unsere Körper gehen darin brach
einander unsicher gegenüber
weisen sie uns immer weiter fort
sie scheinen die Routen verlässlich zu kennen
auch wenn wir kaum mehr wissen
was uns hier hält in den kalten Fluren

No Ordinary Sunday

No ordinary Sunday. First the light
falling dead through dormitory windows blind
with fog; and then, at breakfast, every plate
stained with the small, red cotton flower; and no
sixpence for pocket money. Greatcoats, lined
by the right, marched from their pegs, with slow
poppy fires smouldering in one lapel
to light us through the fallen cloud. Behind
that handkerchief sobbed the quick Sunday bell.

A granite cross, the school field underfoot,
inaudible prayers, hymn-sheets that stirred
too loudly in the hand. When hymns ran out,
silence, like silt, lay round so wide and deep
it seemed that winter held its breath. We heard
only the river talking in its sleep:
until the bugler flexed his lips, and sound
cutting the fog cleanly like a bird,
circled and sang out over the bandaged ground.

Then, low-voiced, the headmaster called the roll
of those who could not answer; every name
suffixed with honour — ‘double first’, ‘kept goal
for Cambridge’ — and a death — in Spitfires, tanks,
and ships torpedoed. At his call there came through
the mist blond heroes in broad ranks
with rainbows struggling on their chests. Ahead
of us, in strict step, as we idled home
marched the formations of the towering dead.

November again, and the bugles blown
in a tropical Holy Trinity,
the heroes today stand further off, grown
smaller but distinct. They flash no medals, keep
no ranks: through Last Post and Reveille
their chins loll on their chests, like birds asleep.
Only when the long, last note ascends
upon the wings of kites, some two or three
look up: and have the faces of my friends.

“Then Father Trandafir reached this penitential spot. He could not expect to do as the others had done, come one day, stay the next, and depart the third. He was too much out of favour with the archdeacon to imagine that he would send him to another village. He could not remain without a village: a priest without a village—a cart without a wheel, a yoke without oxen, a hat on the top of a wig. He began to think what he must do; he must take things as they were, and stay gladly in Saraceni. It was only a village in name, but no one could say he was a priest without a village. But really a more suitable priest for a more suitable village you could not have found. The poverty of the priest corresponded to the poverty in the homes of his parishioners. From the beginning Trandafir realized one thing: it was much nicer in Butucani than in Saraceni. There the people all had something, and you could always have some of it. In Saraceni all the latches were made of wood. Then the Father reflected: the priest did all the business of the town, but the town took care of the priest’s purse. Before long the Father began to feel sure that the people who started by being charitable and hospitable were not born fools. “It is a wise thing when men meet together to comfort and cheer each other. Even our Redeemer began with almsgiving, and the wedding at Cana of Galilee.” Thus thought Father Trandafir; but in Saraceni there was neither almsgiving nor hospitality.
“There is one thing,” said the Father to himself a little later on, “in a poor village there is no corn for the priest to gather. As long as the people of Saraceni are lazy, so long shall I be hungry!” And he began to think how he was going to make his parishioners industrious. The industrious man eats the stones, makes soup out of the stagnant water, and reaps corn where the hemlock used to grow. “Then”—concluded the priest—”when the cow has fodder she is no longer dry!”

Symphony In Grey Major

The sea like a vast silvered mirror
reflects the sky like a sheet of zinc;
distant flocks of birds make stains
on the burnished pale grey background.

The sun, like a round, opaque window
with an invalid’s steps climbs to the zenith;
the sea wind relaxes in the shade
using its black trumpet as a pillow.

The waves that move their leaden bellies
seem to moan beneath the pier.
Sitting on a cable, smoking his pipe,
is a sailor thinking of the beaches
of a vague, distant, misty land.

This sea-dog is old. The fiery beams
of Brazilian sun have tanned his face;
the wild typhoons of the China sea
have seen him drinking his bottle of gin.

The iodine and saltpetre foam
long has known his ruddy nose,
his curly hair, athletic biceps,
his canvas cap, his blouse of drill.

Surrounded by tobacco smoke
the old man sees the far off misty land
for which one hot and golden evening
his brig set out with all sails set …

The siesta of the tropics. The sea-dog sleeps.
Now the shades of grey enfold him.
It is as if an enormous soft charcoal
rubbed out the lines of the horizon’s arc.

The siesta of the tropics. The old cicada
tries out his senile, raucous guitar
and the cricket strikes up a monotonous solo
on the single string of his violin.

Vespers

Little Boy kneels at the foot of the bed,
Droops on the little hands little gold head.
Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares!
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers.

God bless Mummy. I know that’s right.
Wasn’t it fun in the bath to-night?
The cold’s so cold, and the hot’s so hot.
Oh! God bless Daddy – I quite forgot.

If I open my fingers a little bit more,
I can see Nanny’s dressing-gown on the door.
It’s a beautiful blue, but it hasn’t a hood.
Oh! God bless Nanny and make her good.

Mine has a hood, and I lie in bed,
And pull the hood right over my head,
And I shut my eyes, and I curl up small,
And nobody knows that I’m there at all.

Oh! Thank you, God, for a lovely day.
And what was the other I had to say?
I said ‘Bless Daddy,’ so what can it be?
Oh! Now I remember it. God bless Me.

Little Boy kneels at the foot of the bed,
Droops on the little hands little gold head.
Hush! Hush! Whisper who dares!
Christopher Robin is saying his prayers.

Solitude

I have a house where I go
When there’s too many people,
I have a house where I go
Where no one can be;
I have a house where I go,
Where nobody ever says ‘No’;
Where no one says anything- so
There is no one but me.

How to survive Hoosier National Forest.

“A Erzeron

Fame Is A Food That Dead Men Eat

Fame is a food that dead men eat,—

I have no stomach for such meat.

In little light and narrow room,

They eat it in the silent tomb,

With no kind voice of comrade near

To bid the banquet be of cheer.

But Friendship is a nobler thing,—

Of Friendship it is good to sing.

For truly, when a man shall end,

He lives in memory of his friend,

Who doth his better part recall,

And of his faults make funeral.

LETTRE III. ZACHI A USBEK.

A Tauris.

At Half Past Three in the Afternoon

On one side of the world
I was watching the waterfall
shake itself out, a scroll unfurled
against a grey slate wall,
when on the other side
it would be half past nine, and you
in bed – when on the other side
the night was falling further than I knew.

And watching the water
fall from that hole in the sky
to be combed into foam, I caught
a glimpse in the pool’s dark eye
of us, eating our bread
and cheese, watching the falling light
crash into darkness. “Look,” you said,
“a rainbow like a dragonfly in flight.”

On one side of the world
at half past five in the afternoon
a telephone rang, and the darkness welled
from a hole in the sky,
darkness and silence. Soon,
in search of a voice – how to recall
“a rainbow like a dragonfly
in flight” – I walked back to the waterfall.

The trees had lost their tongues –
as I did, coming face to face
with the glacial skeleton hung
beside our picnic place.
The spine was broken, cracked
the ribcage of the waterfall.
The pond under its cataract
knew nothing of us, knew nothing at all.

And what did I know, except
that you, the better part of me,
did not exist? But I have kept
your anniversary
today – or, there, tonight –
returning to the creek, and trying
to understand. I saw the light
falling, falling, and the rainbow flying.

On the Future of Poetry

Bards of the Future! you that come

With striding march, and roll of drum,

What will your newest challenge be

To our prose-bound community?

What magic will you find to stir

The limp and languid listener?

Will it be daring and dramatic?

Will it be frankly democratic?

Will Pegasus return again

In guise of modern aeroplane,

Descending from a cloudless blue

To drop on us a bomb or two?

I know not. Far be it from me

To darken dark futurity;

Still less to render more perplexed

The last vagary, or the next.

Leave Pindus Hill to those who list,

Iconoclast or anarchist —

So be it. “They that break shall pay.”

I stand upon the ancient way.

I hold it for a certain thing,

That, blank or rhyming, song must sing;

And more, that what is good for verse,

Need not, by dint of rhyme, grow worse.

I hold that they who deal in rhyme

Must take the standpoint of the time —

But not to catch the public ear,

As mountebank or pulpiteer;

That the old notes are still the new,

If the musician’s touch be true —

Nor can the hand that knows its trade

Achieve the trite and ready-made;

T
hat your first theme is Human Life,

Its hopes and fears, its love and strife —

A theme no custom can efface,

Common, but never commonplace;

For this, beyond all doubt, is plain:

The Truth that pleased will please again,

And move men as in bygone years

When Hector’s wife smiled through her tears.

Uit:  The Red House Mystery

In the drowsy heat of the summer afternoon the Red House was taking its siesta. There was a lazy murmur of bees in the flower-borders, a gentle cooing of pigeons in the tops of the elms. From distant lawns came the whir of a mowing-machine, that most restful of all country sounds; making ease the sweeter in that it is taken while others are working.

It was the hour when even those whose business it is to attend to the wants of others have a moment or two for themselves. In the housekeeper’s room Audrey Stevens, the pretty parlour-maid, re-trimmed her best hat, and talked idly to her aunt, the cook-housekeeper of Mr. Mark Ablett’s bachelor home.

“For Joe?” said Mrs. Stevens placidly, her eye on the hat. Audrey nodded. She took a pin from her mouth, found a place in the hat for it, and said, “He likes a bit of pink.”

“I don’t say I mind a bit of pink myself,” said her aunt. “Joe Turner isn’t the only one.”

“It isn’t everybody’s colour,” said Audrey, holding the hat out at arm’s length, and regarding it thoughtfully. “Stylish, isn’t it?”

“Oh, it’ll suit you all right, and it would have suited me at your age. A bit too dressy for me now, though wearing better than some other people, I daresay. I was never the one to pretend to be what I wasn’t. If I’m fifty-five, I’m fifty-five–that’s what I say.”

“Fifty-eight, i
sn’t it, auntie?”

“I was just giving that as an example,” said Mrs. Stevens with great dignity.

Audrey threaded a needle, held her hand out and looked at her nails critically for a moment, and then began to sew.

“Funny thing that about Mr. Mark’s brother. Fancy not seeing your brother forfifteen years.” She gave a self-conscious laugh and went on, “Wonder what I should do if I didn’t see Joe for fifteen years.”

“As I told you all this morning,” said her aunt, “I’ve been here five years, and never heard of a brother. I could say that before everybody if I was going to die to-morrow. There’s been no brother here while I’ve been here.”

“You could have knocked me down with a feather when he spoke about him at breakfast this morning. I didn’t hear what went before, naturally, but they was all talking about the brother when I went in–now what was it I went in for–hot milk, was it, or toast?–well, they was all talking, and Mr. Mark turns to me, and says–you know his way–‘Stevens,’ he says, ‘my brother is coming to see me this afternoon; I’m expecting him about three,’ he says. ‘Show him into the office,’ he says, just like that. ‘Yes, sir,’ I says quite quietly, but I was never so surprised in my life, not knowing he had a brother. ‘My brother from Australia,’ he says–there, I’d forgotten that. From Australia.”

God have mercy on the soul of Schoolmaster Pintilie! He was a good man, and a well known chorister. He was very fond of salad with vinegar. Whenever he was hoarse, he would drink the yolk of an egg with it; when he raised his voice, the windows rattled while he sang, “Oh, Lord, preserve Thy people.” He was schoolmaster in Butucani, a fine, large town containing men of position and sound sense, and given to almsgiving and hospitality. Now Schoolmaster Pintilie had only two children: a daughter married to Petrea Tzapu, and Trandafir, Father Trandafir, priest in Saraceni.

God keep Father Trandafir! He was a good man, he had studied many books, and he sang even better than his dead father, God have mercy on his soul! He always spoke correctly and carefully as though he were reading out of a book. Father Trandafir was an industrious, careful man. He gathered from many sources, and made something out of nothing. He saved, he mended, he collected to get enough for himself and for others.

Father Trandafir went through a great deal in his youth. One does not achieve big results in a minute or two. The poor man has to go without a great deal more than he ever gets. He worked harder with his brain than with a spade a
nd fork. But what he did was not work thrown away. Young Trandafir became priest in his native town, in Butucani, a fine large town containing men of position and good sense, but Trandafir did not enjoy the almsgiving and hospitality.”

In Autumn

I know there are those who ask: Why does he not
sing with the same wild harmonies as before?
But they have not seen the labors of an hour
the work of a minute, the prodigies of a year.

I am an aged tree that, when I was growing.
uttered a vague, sweet sound when the breeze caressed me.
The time for youthful smiles has now passed by:
now, let the hurricane swirl my heart to song!

Nocturne

You that have heard the heartbeat of the night,
you that have heard, in the long, sleepless hours,
a closing door, the rumble of distant wheels,
a vague echo, a wandering sound from somewhere:

you, in the moments of mysterious silence,
when the forgotten ones issue from their prison–
in the hour of the dead, In the hour of repose–
will know how to read the bitterness in my verses.
I fill them, as one would fill a glass, with all
my grief for remote memories and black misfortunes,
the nostalgia of my flower-intoxicated soul
and the pain of a heart grown sorrowful with fêtes;

with the burden of not being what I might have been,
the loss of the kingdom that was awaiting me,
the thought of the instant when I might not have been born
and the dream my life has been ever since I was!

All this has come in the midst of that boundless silence
in which the night develops earthly illusions,
and I feel as if an echo of the world’s heart
had penetrated and disturbed my own.

Car au-delà, on retombera.

Uit: Masks of the Liberal Illuminati

From the greatest horrors irony is seldom entirely absent, as if to remind us that there is in truth no such thing as motiveless or mindless malignity.  Thus, the crack in John Kerry’s mirror inspired him, subtly and indirectly, to begin to accomodate himself somewhat to the twenty-first century, but at the same time the hellish terrors of earlier centuries—Vietnam, Nicaragua, the Reagan weapons buildup in Europe, Vietnam, Vietnam—more insidiously gathered around him.  The crack was only moderately disquieting at first—although he could not look into it without imagining he saw, in the distorted image of himself created by the jagged glass, some depressing and menacing symbol of the dark side of the Vril force, made immediate in his too-easy embrace of crowd-pleasing populism, which had attacked him through the weak spot opened up by the susceptibility to the voluptuous yearnings aroused, perhaps deliberately, by the enigmatic Ms. Teresa and her brazenly casual allusions to the rhythm of the act of copulation and the red menace of desire.  He was haunted by an uncomfortable idea, although he tried to shake it off; it would be foolish certainly to accept it, on no better evidence than the coincidence of a bad dream, some dubious polls, and an earth tremor—yet the disturbing concept continued to grow in his mind:  he had perhaps encountered a real witch, and the political world he had so long studied was seemingly coming to life around him.“

The Postman

Satchel on hip
the postman goes
from doorstep to doorstep
and stooping sows

each letterbox
with seed. His right
hand all the morning makes,
the same half circle. White

seed he scatters,
a fistful of
featureless letters
pregnant with ruin or love.

I watch him zig-
zag down the street
dipping his hand in that big
bag, sowing the cool, neat

envelopes which
make twenty-one
unaccountably rich,
twenty-two an orphan.

I cannot see
them but I know
others are watching. We
stoop in a row

(as, he turns away),
straighten and stand
weighing and delaying
the future in one hand.

O’er-top the stone where I shall lie,

Though ill or well the world adjust

My slender claim to honour’d dust,

I shall not question nor reply.

I shall not see the morning sky;

I shall not hear the night-wind sigh;

I shall be mute, as all men must

      In after days!

But yet, now living, fain would I

That some one then should testify,

Saying—’He held his pen in trust

To Art, not serving shame or lust.’

Will none?—Then let my memory die

      In after days!

“Dear Myra, wrote Simpson at the beginning of the yearI have an important suggestion to make to you both, and I am coming round tomorrow night after dinner about nine oclock. As time is so short I have asked Dahlia and Archie to meet me there, and if by any chance you have gone out we shall wait till you come back. Yours ever, SAMUEL P.S.I have asked Thomas too. Well? said Myra eagerly, as I gave her back the letter. In deep thought I buttered a piece of toast. We could stop Thomas, I said. We might ring up the Admiralty and ask them to give him something to do this evening. I dont know about Archie. Is he Oh, what do you think it is? Arent you excited? She sighed and added, Of course I know what Samuel is. Yes. Probably he wants us all to go to the Zoo together… or hes discovered a new way of putting, orI say, I didnt know Archie and Dahlia were in town. They arent. But I expect Samuel telegraphed to them to meet him under the clock at Charing Cross disguised, when they would hear of something to their advantage. Oh, I wonder what it is. It must be something real this time. Since the day when Simpson woke me up at six oclock in the morning to show me his stance-for-a-full-wooden-club shot, I have distrusted his enthusiasms; but Myra loves him as a mother; and II couldnt do without him; and when a man like that invites a whole crowd of people to come to your flat just about the time when you are wondering what has happened to the sardines on toastwell, it isnt polite to put the chain on the door and explain through the letter-box that you have gone away for a week. Wed better have dinner a bit earlier to be on the safe side, I said, as Myra gave me a parting brush down in the hall.”

„As he arrived at Mill O’Luck on Easter Sunday, around breakfast time, together with Raut and Paun, another fellow of theirs, all three of them on horseback, Lica was rather cross at finding Ghita not alone, as they had agreed. Still he said nothing, just tossed in a corner a bag of tools that he had brought along.
“I couldn’t rid myself of her!” spoke Ghita.
“You couldn’t!? You’ve got to rid yourself,” Lica answered harshly. “You mean to say I am to come or go as you please. I brought money, gold and silverware and I can’t carry’em along with me. Have her go away.”
“How can I do that?”
“What do I care!? Make her and that’s that. How? That’s your business.”
To Ghita it seemed he could see again the waggon forsaken in the gutter with the dead child beside.
“God save you from people who have a soft spot for some woman!” Lica went on hotly.
“Soft spot I have not,” spoke the innkeeper.
“So you’ve not!” said the swineherd again. “All right! Get it into that head of yours that we’ve got to get this over with once and for all. Never mind, I’ll get it over with. It’s all the better that she stayed. I’ve got this bad yearning inside of me today,” he added as to himself and with his foot shoved the bag behind a crate that lay nearby.
Having done this he went out through the pub, where Uta was leaning against the door frame, pinched her thigh so hard that it made her scream and went on towards Ana, who was sitting on the porch pondering what might be going on inside.
“I’ll wager,” he said, “that before half an hour’s over the gypsies will get here. They’ve got a nose keener than a hound. And then we’ll fix up a day for ourselves the likes of which there hasn’t been any. I’ve got an itching of the worst kind and you should know that I’m hard to quench when the itching takes me.”
“I’m in the mood, too,” Ana answered rather loathingly.
Lica slunk even closer to her and spoke in her ear, in jest seemingly:
“I’ll come up with some excuse for Ghita to go away and leave us alone.”
Ana’s breath stopped. It was a joke, all right; but even as a joke it was pretty cheeky and touched her where she was most sensitive.”
