Uit: The Monkey King (Fragment uit: Voyages très extraordinaires de Saturnin Farandoul,

vertaald door Brian Stableford)

„The entire natural world was their oyster. They appeared to be enjoying the admirable view with a tranquil proprietary right that no anxiety could trouble. There, as if in a magical looking-glass, all the beauties of the tropics were spread out: all the glorious flowers that the equatorial sun could bring into bloom, marvellous plants, giant trees and a thousand-fold weave of lianas.

Four little monkeys of various heights gambolled on the grass, swinging from descending lianas as they went past, and chasing one another around the coconut palms under the protective eye of their father and mother — more serious individuals, who were content to mark their joy at the good weather’s return by quietly shaking their hindquarters with perfect panache.

The mother, a lovely she-monkey with an elegant figure and a graceful demeanour, carried in her arms a fifth offspring, which she suckled as she walked, with a candour and a dignified serenity that would have tempted the chisel of a Praxiteles.

Suddenly, their tranquillity was disturbed. The father, at the sight of an object extended on the beach, turned two or three somersaults — a gesture which, among the monkeys of these distant climes, signifies the most colossal astonishment. The mother — without ceasing to nurse her infant — and the four little monkeys likewise turned half a dozen simultaneous somersaults before coming to rest on all fours, unnerved. If they were alarmed it was that the object perceived by the monkey was stirring and struggling, desperately twirling its arms and legs, as a crab does when one plays the practical joke of setting it down on its back.“

Sonnet V

I touch you as a lonely violin touches the suburbs of the faraway place

patiently the river asks for its share of the drizzle

and, bit by bit, a tomorrow passing in poems approaches

so I carry faraway’s land and it carries me on travel’s road

On a mare made of your virtues, my soul weaves

a natural sky made of your shadows, one chrysalis at a time.

I am the son of what you do in the earth, son of my wounds

that have lit up the pomegranate blossoms in your closed-up gardens

Out of jasmine the night’s blood streams white. Your perfume,

my weakness and your secret, follows me like a snakebite. And your hair

is a tent of wind autumn in color. I walk along with speech

to the last of the words a bedouin told a pair of doves

I palpate you as a violin palpates the silk of the faraway time

and around me and you sprouts the grass of an ancient place—anew

My Mother

I yearn for my mother’s bread

My mother’s coffee

My mother’s touch

Childhood grows within me

Day upon daybreak

And I love my life because I

When I die

Am ashamed of my mother’s tears

Take me, if I come back someday

As a cloak for your eyelashes

Cover my bones with grass

An intending from the purity of your bosom

And pull my bonds tight

With a lock of hair

With a thread that trails from the back of your dress

I may become a god

A god I become

Whenever I touch the depths of your heart

Leave me, whenever I return

As fuel to feed your fire

As a clothes-line over the roof of your home

Because I lose suspension

Without your day-prayer

I am old; bring back the stars of childhood

To consult with you

The smallest of sparrows

The road of return

To the nest of your awaiting

Our Table

On the way back from the funeral cocks were crowing
Upon the April soil of an empty afternoon.

The sky, like a small morning-glory,
Suddenly faced us. We went into a tavern.

Our table gave little crackling sounds,
The tree remembering it had been alive.
Vertaald door Nermin Menemencioglu

Gypsies

“Do you recall the sea, the deep sea
“Which drives the birds crazy in November?
“The sun, too, that goes sizzling into the sea?
“You don’t say? How about the tree under which
“The gypsies were sitting? Thin too slipped your mind?
“How many years since the time of death?

Uit: Jeremy and Hamlet  (Come out of the Kitchen)

There was a certain window between the kitchen and the pantry that was Hamlet’s favourite. Thirty years ago–these chronicles are of the year 1894–the basements of houses in provincial English towns, even of large houses owned by rich people, were dark, chill, odourfull caverns hissing with ill-burning gas and smelling of ill-cooked cabbage. The basement of the Coles’ house in Polchester was as bad as any other, but this little window between the kitchen and

the pantry was higher in the wall than the other basement windows, almost on a level with the iron railings beyond it, and offering a view down over Orange Street and, obliquely, sharp to the right and

past the Polchester High School, a glimpse of the Cathedral Towers themselves.

Inside the window was a shelf, and on this shelf Hamlet would sit for hours, his peaked beard interrogatively a-tilt, his leg sticking out from his square body as though it were a joint-leg and worked like the limb of a wooden toy, his eyes, sad and mysterious, staring into Life.. ..

It was not, of course, of Life that he was thinking; only very high- bred and in-bred dogs are conscious philosophers. His ears were stretched for a sound of the movements of Mrs. Hounslow the cook, his nostrils distended for a whiff of the food that she was manipulating, but his eyes were fixed upon the passing show, the pageantry, the rough-and-tumble of the world, and every once and again the twitch of his Christmas-tree tail would show that something was occurring in this life beyond the window that could supervene, for a moment at any rate, over the lust of the stomach and the lure of the clattering pan.“

Hidden

If you place a fern
under a stone
the next day it will be
nearly invisible
as if the stone has
swallowed it.

If you tuck the name of a loved one
under your tongue too long
without speaking it
it becomes blood
sigh
the little sucked-in breath of air
hiding everywhere
beneath your words.

No one sees
the fuel that feeds you.

Making a Fist

For the first time, on the road north of Tampico,
I felt the life sliding out of me,
a drum in the desert, harder and harder to hear.
I was seven, I lay in the car
watching palm trees swirl a sickening pattern past the glass.
My stomach was a melon split wide inside my skin.

“How do you know if you are going to die?”
I begged my mother.
We had been traveling for days.
With strange confidence she answered,
“When you can no longer make a fist.”

Years later I smile to think of that journey,
the borders we must cross separately,
stamped with our unanswerable woes.
I who did not die, who am still living,
still lying in the backseat behind all my questions,
clenching and opening one small hand.

Berry Picking

Silently my wife walks on the still wet furze
Now darkgreen the leaves are full of metaphors
Now lit up is each tiny lamp of blueberry.
The white nails of rain have dropped and the sun is free.

And whether she bends or straightens to each bush
To find the children’s laughter among the leaves
Her quiet hands seem to make the quiet summer hush–
Berries or children, patient she is with these.

I only vex and perplex her; madness, rage
Are endearing perhaps put down upon the page;
Even silence daylong and sullen can then
Enamor as restraint or classic discipline.

So I envy the berries she puts in her mouth,
The red and succulent juice that stains her lips;
I shall never taste that good to her, nor will they
Displease her with a thousand barbarous jests.

How they lie easily for her hand to take,
Part of the unoffending world that is hers;
Here beyond complexity she stands and stares
And leans her marvelous head as if for answers.

No more the easy soul my childish craft deceives
Nor the simpler one for whom yes is always yes;
No, now her voice comes to me from a far way off
Though her lips are redder than the raspberries.

Robinson I

Immer wieder strecke ich meine Hand
nach einem Schiff aus.
Mit der bloßen Faust versuche ich,
nach seinem Segel zu greifen.
Anfangs fing ich
verschiedene Fahrzeuge, die sich
am Horizont zeigten.
Ich fange Forellen so.
Doch der Monsun sah mir
auf die Finger
und ließ sie entweichen,
oder Ruder und Kompass
brachen. Man muss
mit Schiffen zart umgehen.
Darum rief ich ihnen Namen nach.
Sie lauteten immer
wie meiner.

Jetzt lebe ich nur noch
in Gesellschaft mit dem Ungehorsam
einiger Worte.

Hoher Herbst

Die Kastanie fällt.
Die Walnuß wird geschlagen.
Das nasse Obst:
in Körben heimgetragen!

Der Wind aus West,
der Regen treibt die Blätter.
Das Astwerk bricht
herab im schweren Wetter.

Die graue Zeit
sinkt mit den Nebeln nieder.
Die Kühle greift
den Vögeln ins Gefieder.

Nur Rabenschrei
verhallt in leeren Wäldern
beim scharfen Rauch
