„It was, actually, only in the few moments following the sudden transition-the breaking down of the sound track, the change from the talkie to the silent film-that he now ever thought about, or indeed was conscious of-this extraordinary change which took place in his mind. Soon enough he was watching the silent film-the silent film without music-as though there had never been any talkie-as though what he saw had always been like this.

A silent film without music-he could have found no better way of describing the weird world in which he now moved. He looked at passing objects and people, but they had no colour, vivacity, meaning-he was mentally deaf to them. They moved like automatons, without motive, without volition of their own. He could hear what they said, he could understand their words, he could answer them, even; but he did this automatically, without having to think of what they had said or what he was saying in return. Therefore, though they spoke it was as though they had not spoken, as though they had moved their lips but remained silent. They had no valid existence; they were not creatures experiencing pleasure or pain. There was, in fact, no sensation, no pleasure or pain at all in this world: there was only himself-his dreary, numbed, dead self.

There was no sensation, but there was something to be done. Emphatically, most emphatically there was something to be done. So soon as he had recovered from the surprise-but nowadays it was hardly a surprise-of that snap in his head, that break in the sound track, that sudden burst into a new, silent world-so soon as he had recovered from this he was aware that something had to be done. He could not think what it was at first, but this did not worry him. He could never think of it at first, but it would come: if he didn’t nag at it, but relaxed mentally, it would come.“

“He was one of the prominent members of the Writers Association of Iran that was formed in 1968 but soon fell apart under the unacceptable demands and conditions set by the government to hold tight control over their activities. In 1977, on the eve of the Islamic Revolution of 1978–79, the Writers Association of Iran was revived, this time more vigorous in its aspirations and enjoying greater support from academic and professional anti-regime circles. The so-called “Ten Nights” of reading poems and delivering provocative speeches against the system of suppression and censorship by fifty-nine poets and speakers, sponsored by the Writers Association of Iran and was hosted by the German Goethe Institute in Tehran from October 10 to 19, 1977, an unprecedented occasion for the Iranian intelligentsia to air their grievances and celebrate their victory. According to all accounts, Golshiri played a significant role at different stages of this successful event.4
The joyous mood of freedom following the revolution did not last more than a few months, if not only a few weeks, at least for the young anti-reactionary and modernist segments of the population. Here the hunchback stops and looks at you, because this is the novel he would write; of course, a bit spun out and padded to make it longer he says. You see? that dying woman who was a poor but beautiful girl, and at her deathbed the doctor and the priest who should have been her husband and her son … that would have been a proper book, but your book won’t be a proper book, there’ll be nothing in it about life AS IT REALLY IS.”

Toen schoof zij haastig het doekje, dat zij over haar krullen droeg, wat steviger naar voren, want er ging een trilling door het Reuzenwiel. ‘We gaan weer,’ zei ze. Maar tegelijkertijd riep een machtige stem door een luidspreker naar boven dat ze geduld moesten hebben en zich niet ongerust moesten maken. Er werd even iets verholpen aan de machinerie.

‘We hangen hier dus toch niet voor de aardigheid; valt me van ze tegen,’ zei Ricky.

‘Ik vind het hier boven prettiger dan beneden in al die drukte. En het is hier koeler,’ zei het meisje. Zij heette Mary, maar hij noemde haar altijd Baby. En zijn echte baby noemde hij bij al die mooie lange namen, die hij had verzonnen omdat dat het enige was wat ze hun dochtertje hadden kunnen geven bij haar geboorte. En ook omdat hij het leuk vond dat de ambtenaar van de Burgerlijke Stand zo veel moest opschrijven. Want Ricky Carlotto was óók nog erg jong. Hij was negentien en zij achttien.

‘We zijn een mooie vader en moeder,’ zei Ricky, terwijl hij door zijn zwarte haren streek. Zijn strooien hoed lag op Mary’s schoot. ‘Hier zitten wij lekker in het Reuzenwiel, terwijl onze dochter beneden in het tentoonstellingsgebouw door duizenden mensen wordt bekeken en ons geld opbrengt, zo klein als ze is.’

‘Honderd dollar,’ zei Mary ernstig. ‘Honderd dollar verdient ze voor ons, en zij weegt nog geen twee en een half pond. En we krijgen duizend dollar,’ zei ze langzamer, ‘duizend dollar, als ze dood gaat …’

‘Gebeurt niet,’ zei Ricky vastberaden. ‘Gebeurt absoluut niet. Bedenk maar eens even: zij krijgt de beste, de allerbeste, de allerfijnste verzorging die er bestaat. “Wir waren nicht mehr Enklave oder Exklave, nicht mehr Zwischenraum oder Peripherie; wir waren mittendrin. Vielleicht waren wir sogar das, was keiner von uns sein wollte, die neue Mitte.

Sander gab mir die Hand und zog mich ins Haus, genauer: zwischen die Mauern, die stehen geblieben waren. Wir brauchten fast eine Viertelstunde, um am anderen Ende der Ruine anzukommen. In manchen Räumen war ein Teil des Mobiliars zurückgelassen worden: Stühle, Sessel, Schreibtische, die nun teilweise völlig verwittert und verschimmelt waren. Andere Stücke hatten die neuen Bewohner an sich genommen und aufgearbeitet, erzählte Sander.

„Bei uns ist praktisch jedes Handwerk vertreten“, sagte er, „sonst könnten wir gar nicht existieren. Das Gerümpel, das hier noch herumsteht, wird bald entsorgt werden.“

An einer der Wände hing noch immer das offizielle Bild des Generals. Jedes Mal, wenn er daran vorbeikam, wollte Sander es abnehmen und auf den Müll werfen, winkte dann aber ab und ging weiter. Das Foto war stark nachgedunkelt und ganz leicht gewellt, aber es zeigte den General, wie ihn die ganze Welt gekannt hatte: im Halbprofil, das kurze Haar streng gescheitelt und mit einem Blick, der zugleich Entschlossenheit und Güte ausdrücken sollte. Sein Leibfotograf war bei der Flucht der Regierung nicht mehr mitgekommen, sondern gefasst worden. Man hatte ihn jedoch nicht an die Wand gestellt, sondern sich sein Können und seine Dienste für die neuen offiziellen Legenden gesichert.“

I know well Ismail Bey’s high plateau with its cold running waters,

The rose’s branch, as tall as four men, that winds around the cypress,

It’s time for the ant that never knew childhood to grow up,

He’d never focused again like he’d focused then, and now he was a dabbler, withsome experience as a recording engineer, some in car alarms, some in weather futures(true, long story), some as a carpenter — we’d actually worked on one summer gigtogether, a porch on an enormous place — a gingerbread-looking place on Lake Geneva –but he left any job where he wasn’t learning or when his dignity was anywherecompromised.”
